I agree with your interpritation. I assume it to mean the caster, as in, the target is dazed on it's turn, which continues until Avelina's turn begins. It was especially effective in this scenario as it both shut down their last turn's spell, stopped them from being able to make AoO as we move in, and makes them unable to act this coming turn.

I've had the same question before but that seems like an accurate way to do it.

I have a similar question with poisons. Is is possible to take the initial then save the secondary off before taking the first effect?

If a caster casts a spell that lasts 1 round on her turn, it ends at the start of that caster's next turn. The daze effect takes place immediately, so it should end after one full initiative cycle.

As far as poisons, what exactly was your question, Karas? I did a lot of research on the mechanics of poisons recently and found this helpful blog post that helps explain poison frequency.

Does that help?

Yes. 100% this. Exactly. Putting aside the great narration and the abundantly distinctive and delightful character personalities, this game has been sharpening my awareness and understanding of the rules. If someone wants to GM the Strange Aeons AP but doesn't have sufficient time to devote to it, we could experiment with creating characters and playing the adventure with the understanding that the GM may not be able to post as frequently as normal.

It might be fun enough that the slow pace would be compensated by the RP and intrigue. Maybe the pace could pick up later if the GMs schedule changes.

I got the player's guide and it looks interesting. I'd offer to GM at diminished capacity, but I think I would enjoy playing a character more than being the GM. And given that each PC starts with little memory of his/her past, we wouldn't have to spend a lot of time working on background details. It might even be interesting to let the GM determine each character's background as the AP progresses the the characters regain their memories.

That's an interesting thought about the backgrounds. Incouldmwork with that.

I know the guide says psychics would struggle but I'd love to play an amnesiac psychic in that path. Seems tailor made for it!

I would love to start a group with you all with the understanding that posting might move a little slow. And as much as you're such a fantastic GM, I would love to see you as a player.

I don't know what I would play, but it will probably be something Occult.

On Strange Aeons:
Okay, so I read the player's guide, and it certainly does appeal to me. Truth be told, I was planning to GM a horror (albeit more Southern Gothic, backwoods-y kind of horror) game with amnesiac protagonists in a homebrew setting very similar to Ustalav. I actually have the recruitment PbP page drafted from a while ago somewhere in my google drive in case I ever wanted to run it, but have wanted to get on my feet before I add anything to my plate.

So it is the type of game that I'd like to GM, and probably challenges Kingmaker, Hell's Vengeance, and Curse of the Crimson Throne for adventure paths I most want to run.

I start a job on Tuesday, but if I'm not overly burdened and if I have the time outside the games I am already in or running, I'd be willing to DM the AP. By the end of September, I imagine I'll have a more solid grasp on if I'll be able to run it or not.

If it will help, I'll offer to share the GM duties in the following ways:

I don't want to read the AP and spoil the surprise of the learning what is happening as a player. But if someone else will take responsibility for the aspects of the game that require reading the AP, I'll create all the maps, character icons, and run the melee combats that involve the more straightforward NPCs and monster.

I'll purchase the AP map pack and I have lots of other map resources should something else be needed. If the GM can PM me information about each upcoming melee, such as the room and the stats of the NPCs or the identity of the monsters with entries in the bestiary/SRD, I will run the melee. I think I can do that while also playing a PC.

And frankly, I'd be happy if the GM wants to just post the box text that is supposed to be read to the players. No need to get too creative and literary.

I read through the players guide last night and made a list of a few archetypes I might like to play. There's one that sounds like it could be interesting in this scenario, the Infiltrator Inquisitor. The description at the start of the archetype says, "This inquisitor uses guile and deception to blend in among the enemies of the faith rather than confronting them head-on." So I figure, with the loss of memory, the character would not be sure if he was a member of the cult he was trying to infiltrate or if he was trying to expose it. Plus the inquisitor would have some healing spells, which will be helpful.

But I might also run a rogue (sharper or Eldritch Scoundrel) or Harrowed Society student (Tarroh Student) (Arcanist). The Forensic Physician (Investigator) also appeals to the scientist in me.

Anyway, I'm excited at the prospect of playing. I just want to stress that if we do this, there should be no pressure on anyone to post every day. It should not be something that the GM or any player finds burdensome.

This group is approaching its one year anniversary and everyone has been very good about hanging in there and posting regularly. So with any luck, if we start this game at a slow pace, we might eventually find the pace picking up later. If it fizzles, no hard feelings however. New jobs and the other challenges of real life come first.

It is hard to imagine you being a paladin after doing all those HORRIBLE things you did that you don't recall.

Paladins are fun because of faith. Remembered you killed that family? Well, the fact that you have powers means you've at least atoned for it in some way, even if you don't remember how.

I'm thinking of a character who prior to getting amnesia was involved in some kind of subtrafuge that involved pretending to be something he /she was not. Like a con artist pretending to be an aristocrat or an inquisitor pretending to be a member of an evil cult or a spy trying to infiltrate the ranks of a revolutionary group.

Then as the memories start to return, he/she may think he/she was an aristocrat, a cultist, or a revolutionary and may even find his/her equipment seems to be consistent with this.

By the way, there is a new Pathfinder book devoted to horror concepts. The reviews so far suggest it has more for the GM than the player, but it looks like something I'd like to get eventually.

I love role playing the horror genre and my do a home brew horror game eventually.

While looking something up on the D20 Pathfinder SRD, I noticed an ad from the website that offered a lot of 3rd party Pathfinder material for a low price. The author of the material is Owen K.C. Stephens, someone with an impressive resume, including Paizo's Pathfinder material.

Everything is published by Rogue Genius Games and you get a huge amount of diverse material, all compatible with Pathfinder rules. If you have US$30, consider picking it up. The offer says the cost of buying each item separately would be US$600.

Even though I'm usually rather skeptical of 3rd party content, this stuff seems solid. I am probably going to incorporate some stuff in the NPCs for WOTR and will consider allowing PCs to use content from this source (on a case by case basis).

If you are interested, here is the link for the offer.

Here is the Wikipedia entry for Owen K.C. Stephens.

I'm just beginning to peruse the material, but already I found an item of equipment that provides what Franti was asking about regarding caltrops. I'll post that in the next post.

This item is from "Genius Guide to Archer Archetypes."

Consider it to be a baseball-size object that you throw as an improvised thrown object. If you don't have the Throw Anything feat or similar feat, you take a -4 on the attack roll.

Caltrops Chuck
Cost: 10 gp
Range increment: 10'
This ammunition contains a compact set of collapsed, spring-loaded caltrops. On a successful attack against a target, one 5-foot square in that target’s area is filled with caltrops. A ranged attack against an AC of 5 + range increment penalties, if any, is required to place a square of caltrops in a specific unoccupied space. Treat the mechanics of throwing this like a splash weapon, but it does not damage; it only places the caltrops which then may do damage if they are walked on.

I'm going to say this is a one-use item.

I'd allow this to be on an arrow or crossbow bolt with an end like a blunt arrow. The cost is 10 times the normal cost and the range increment is cut in half. Firing such a weapon is considered an exotic weapon, so it is -4 if you don't have an EWP feat.

These items are described as part of an archetype called the Archer Alchemist, who makes his own ammunition. As such, I'm going to say it will not always be available, so when you are in a position to purchase equipment, let me know if you want this type of item and I'll make a roll to see if you can locate someone who can make it.

Good job on this encounter. The AP designed Vagorg as a 5th level sorcerer, CR 4. I boosted him up to 7th level, CR 6, to give you a bigger challenge and more XP.

Paizo gets high marks in my opinion for writing in characters like Anevia and Irabeth. They remain potential NPCs throughout the AP.

Take your time role playing this out and then it's on to your next stop. Decide what to do with Vagorg.

I need to get some items that give me a bonus to my Perform (Comedy) skill, ut that would also necessitate me stepping my game up when I use it.

For 2500 I could get a +5 skill item made for me, which isn't too expensive or a crazy of an increase. A Cracked Magenta Ioun Stone could also work, and is a good item to have regardless.

Display of Charisma would work for a mythic path ability as well, though may be a bit overkill. Plan to take Display of Dexterity anyhow.

I have a bard who got a Circlet of Persuasion, which gives +3 to skills that rely on Charisma. Good for diplomacy, bluff, and perform skills.

I feel so bad that I havent been able to check in on this thread since last weekend! I'll try to find more time soon - I've been working overtime all week and PbP has been far from my mind. (Things finally look like they're calming down, fingers crossed, knock on wood.)

We're at a break of sorts, so I'm not pushing things to move much, giving folks time to role play something besides gritty combat and survival situations.

I'm going on a camping trip, so I'll not be posting until Saturday afternoon or evening.

Assignment (optional but encouraged if you have time): Compose a post that shows a conversation with someone the PC either knows already or has just met in the Inn during the time before the group meets with Irabeth for a general debriefing. Make up any character you like, friendly or not, pious or not, etc. Let the conversation reveal something about your character that perhaps has not come out yet.

On the weekend, I will post what Irabeth tells you about the current situation. After that, the group will be encouraged to check out the other cult safe houses and visit Terendelev's manor.

Once these events and a few possible street encounters are concluded, the group will level up to 4th for the climactic crawl through the demon stronghold on an essential mission to limit the damage of the destruction of the wardstones and perhaps strike a blow to the demons' plans. It will be ... wait for it ... mythic!
