The shadowthing scuttles away from Akorian, rounding the corner of the room and moving from ceiling to wall as it approaches Waifrin. In doing so it shields itself from the sunrods carried by the main party.

Zarabeta steps closer to the corridor, saying out loud, "Akorian, light magic cast directly upon it might distress the creature."

She then begins casting a spell, this incantation being lengthier than any she has done before, her hands moving in imploring gestures.

"Waifrin, get over this side quickly.."

had thought about jumping the channel..but with two friends in the way and the under foot conditions I would have had a DC15 check with a -6 on the dice..which spells fail

Marius chases the dark creature around the pool. Zarabeta begins her summoning. Waifrin nimbly leaps the channel and bathes the creature in fire. It writhes and twitches. Its limbs flail. It loses its grip on the wall and slips down it in slow motion. Then the sheet of flames passes and it catches itself. Mother's arrow just misses high. Janiven leaps the channel to sidesteps down the tunnel to get a clear line of fire. Her bolt flies wide to the right. (I3) Morosino whirls, looks left and right yells, "what is it?"

Waiting for Akorian and Raven.

"May the light of Milani shine in the darkest of times, so we might see our enemies and smite them down!" Akorian calls out.

Casting light once again, but this time on his weapon.

With a nimbus of illumination radiating from the spiked head of the priest's morningstar, he begins closing on the shadowy beast, circling around to help Marius face it down.

If I'm reading the map correctly, you can put Akorian in G8.

Taking his hand crossbow out once more, the elven rogue moves forward as well, taking but a moment to look back at Morosino as he does so.

"Stay where you are boy, yes? Make sure you do not make yourself a target. Keeping hold of your sunrod would probably help," he says with a reassuring smile.

Raven uses a standard action to draw his hand crossbow and a move action to get to G8.

"Well, that is... interesting," Raven remarks, surprise evident in his voice. Despite the creature's apparent retreat, he still keeps his weapon at hand, golden eyes turned towards the corner it just disappeared around as he makes his way closer to Waifrin just in case.

"Instead of giving chase, I think we should just focus on leaving this place as soon as possible. Perhaps those that think they can open that hatch should give their ideas a try while the rest of us stand guard?"

"Stay your weapons," Akorian suggests as he follows behind Raven and sees him and Mother still firing at the retreating creature, "I believe the young miss...Zarabeta?...has the right of it. This thing seems to fear our light. So let's be sure to keep plenty at hand."

He looks back at the secured hatch with a frown. "I fear we can't get out that way," he tells everyone, "The lock's on the outside and even our nimble elven friend here would be hard-pressed to pick such a thing at an odd angle, sight unseen. It's made of heavy iron, too. And I doubt we'd bring enough muscle to bear on it while standing on that ladder. Even if we did, it'll probably attract enough attention to bring a Hellknight or two to investigate."

"It's best we move on..." he sighs, "And see where else the sewers take us. Let's just be on our guard in case more of those...things...are lurking about..."

"I'm afraid Milani's blessings don't quite work that way," Akorian replies with a reassuring smile, "As a new light springs into being, any other will fade. So stick close to anyone bearing a sunrod. And for now, we should clearly display our lights as prominently as we can to see us through these dark tunnels. If Hellknights catch up to us because of it, well...so be it. Akorian nods and looks expectantly at the lady for an answer, as well.

Zara's dog chases after the shadow-beast, barking and snarling into the distance. After a few moments it falls silent.

The party regroups to consider their options.

Janiven ponders for a moment. "I think we've come pretty well west. Let's try turning south and we'll see what we find." Marius and Morosino lead the way out of the room. They quickly find a passage to the left and turn down it.

After a few more minutes, first one sunrod, then the other dies. Akorian (and other capable casters) provide light. A couple of intersections later there is a sword symbol at the intersection pointing right. Morosino smiles. He and Janiven nod to each other.

The sword trail continues uninterrupted until Morosino says, "this is it."

Female Human Fighter 1/Ranger 1

"Whew!" Mother sighs in relief. "That was a close one, all right. I was beginning to think we'd be stuck down here til doomsday!"

Janiven knocks on the hatch above and it is opened from the outside by a balding muscular man. "Come on up. The coast is clear. "

"Thanks, Ermolos, " Janiven replies. "OK, everyone up and follow Ermolos."

You climb a ladder of iron rungs set in the wall and emerge into a dingy back alley. It's ill-lit and cluttered with junk. The sky is bluish purple, and fading rapidly to black. Ermolos shows you the way to a door which appears to be boarded over, but opens at a touch. "You can relax here, " he says.

The room inside the door is furnished simply with a wooden table and chairs and one long low couch.

Waifrin looks at Marius and then looks away again.

"I don't know," she confesses. "It first happened when I ... escaped." Her jaw tightens - there is a lot unsaid there - but she does not elaborate where from. "I got angry, and things burned. It kept happening whenever I got angry, or scared, or excited. It saved my life a few times, and I think it maybe made my hair change colour, because that started happening about then. Sometimes it's fire, or lightning, or ice or even a loud noise. Do you remember those exercises Father made me do, the ones where I had to sit really still and imagine things? I found I could use that to control it, make it happen when I wanted and not happen when I didn't."

Waifrin goes silent for a long moment, before she continues in a whisper.

"I heard that some people made pacts with devils for power, power that got passed down to their children. Marius, what if this is that? What if I'm one of them?" her voice trembles from fear and self-loathing.

"Ah, finally the sewers and their distinct aroma are a thing of the past," the elven scoundrel remarks happily as he takes a deep breath as soon as he exits the sewers into the alley. Following Janiven and Morosino, he enters the room and quickly makes his way to the couch, deeming it to be the most comfortable of the place's amenities.

"You would not happen to have a bit of fine wine, would you now? Or even not so fine as long as it is sufficiently palatable," he continues with a smile. "After all, it is only fair to enjoy at least some refreshment after such a merry chase, yes?"

The priest leaves the others to wind down from the tension of the past few hours. And he spends his own time quietly examining the Hellknight's blade while staring out the boarded-up windows to watch the rest of the sky turn dark.

"Every night, it's like a pall settles over this city," he comments to Janiven when she comes alongside him, "You know we've got to do something. Your impassioned speech back there has to lead to something more. Especially now that the Hellknights have Arael and suspect you, as well."

"I have an estate I can return to...but you know I'll support you in whatever you decide," he shares, "Of course...I'll stay here this evening rather than risk being out past curfew. He holds out the Hellknight's sword and draws it halfway from the scabbard to inspect its steel.

"Forged by a Henderthane, I suspect," he sourly notes. He fully sheathes it again and taps it against the floorboards with a hollow thump.

"I don't suppose you'd like to assist me in a sending this back as a gift to the Order of the Rack?" he asks, "Say, hanging it from one of those diabolical gargoyles they like putting on the rooftops of their barracks these days? Akorian starts to answer and then can't help but chuckle a little at the young waif's comment to Raven.

"I might be able to help," he tells her, rising from the couch and crossing the room to examine her cuts. "Yeah, some of these look pretty serious."

He nods at Ermolos. "Can you get some water for me? And a few towels or clean rags?" he asks. Then, the priest assists Waifrin into a comfortable position so he can clean her wounds before healing them. "As the Everbloom, Milani can always restore health and vitality to those with a fierce spirit to live," he notes, "I sense you've got plenty of that in you. I just want to make sure we lower the risk of infection before closing your wounds with the power of her will."

As soon as Raven is done inspecting the gear (and she is done magically cleaning people), Zarabeta will cast her own eye over it, to verify his analysis.

Appraise 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (20) + 8 = 28 plus an additional 3 if her Familiar is within 1 mile, which she doubts, since it's either flown back to her room, or is still waiting on a rooftop somewhere...

She'll also open her eyes to the subtle signs of magic, and inspect the pink-colored potions.

Cast detect magic and use Spellcraft 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27, DC 16 if they are CL 1 and she gets a +2 if they are Conjuration, but a -5 if they are Evocation or Necromancy.

She looks around for a reflective surface, even if it is just a metal shield or Akorian's breastplate, and continues magically altering her appearance, tinkering with a couple of Osirioni style eye-of-power designs around her dark eyes while muttering phrases in Osirioni to herself, practicing lines.

"That's useful ... can you do that to mine?" Waifrin asks eagerly, running her hands through her long, thick silver-white hair. "When I first escaped, and my hair changed, it hid me well, but now ... well not many Wescrani have hair like mine - and as a dancer, I get seen a lot."

"Sadly, the color changes only last an hour. I'll have to purchase some henna to make them last." Zarabeta admits. "But I can certainly darken your hair when we leave this place, giving us the time necessary to make more lasting changes."

"I guess I'll take one of those bottles o' medicine." Mother grabs one of the flasks. "Men and beasts get hurt on the farm from time to time."

"Before we go anywhere, Miss Janiven, do you mind telling us exactly what you've gotten us into? Seems to me like the Hellknights know all about whatever little plans you've got cooked up."

Tim:

Spoiler:

Milani (The Everbloom): Up until Aroden died, Milani was just a minor saint who followed him. But, in the dark times of upheaval in the Empire of Cheliax when he didn't appear as promised, the House of Thrune came to power...several outlying regions seceded...and much of the world stood on the brink of falling back into barbarism. This caused people to turn to a variety of different faiths for solace. That included Iomedae and Milani as the two greatest churches to inherit Aroden's followers. But whereas Aroden was Lawful Neutral, Iomedae is Lawful Good and Milani is Chaotic Good in their philosophies. While Iomedae rallied the law and order aspects of the faith, Milani gave hope to the downtrodden and aided them in organizing their rebellions against Cheliax in ways that could rebuild society rather than allow it to fall apart.

Since then, Milani has become the patron those who rebel against injustice. Her faith never quite reached the popularity of Iomedae, however, because Iomedae's faith had already spread before Aroden died. And Iomedae's goals are much more sustainable than Milani's. Because, once a rebellion suceeds, Milani's faithful go back to their everyday normal lives...until a new uprising becomes necessary. So her worshipers are generally small congregations in oppressive nations where hope and uprisings are the only chance at a better tomorrow. They believe that once an uprising proves successful, the need for hope fades — and they wait for the time when they'll have to defend against oppression once again.

Aroden (The Last Azlanti): He was the last of his kind - the Azlanti. When that nation fell below the sea, he became an immortal who raised the Starstone and installed it in Absalom whereby he became a living god. Eventually, he became the patron deity of Taldor. As that nation conquered neighboring areas, Aroden’s religion spread. Yet at the height of his faith’s power, Aroden actually died and no one knows why. Much of his faith turned to his saints for leadership after that, including the missionary heroine, Iomedae, and the conscientious rebel, Milani. Because of Aroden's absence, no true clerics of his faith exist, as they've all lost access to any divine magic. Some still cling to his faith and preach his philosophy, attempting to duplicate miracles with artifacts that still contain some spark of his power. But other than that, Aroden's faith is completely extinct.

Iomedae (The Inheritor): Iomedae was the chief beneficiary of Aroden's demise. Before he perished, she had already become elevated into the divinity, completing the Test of the Starstone in Absalom. She's the primary do-gooder goddess. A patron saint of paladins. A martial deity who staunchly defends against evil. She played a big role in facing down the supreme bad guy known as the Whispering Tyrant during the greatest of all wars on Golarion. And she continues to preach Aroden's original faith, tempered by her own ethical code for good. Her clerics also have a habit of bring "civilization" to savage peoples. They're on the front line of the crusades in northern Golarion against the demons of the Worldwound. And, in Cheliax, Iomedae's supporters generally chafe at the willingness of House Thrune to rely on devils (and Asmodeus) to keep order following the upheaval after Aroden's death. But, they can't argue with the results. Cheliax is orderly and peaceful, even if that order and peace exist as a result of fear and tyranny.

Hope that helps,
--Neil
