Thank you so much. Things are a lot better now -- I'm actually at GenCon at the moment, but it's just me instead of the family trip we expected.
I thought I'd be able to post from here but hadn't realized how huge this really was -- please bot me until I get back on Tuesday.
Dolgrin Girndmar |
Okay, so, I dunno exactly what I should have Dolgrin do.
Being the straight forward personality that he is, he has done what he had came here to do, and would head back to his Smithy and go about his normal day to day business.
However, I feel like that would basically be just walking him right out of the first real "encounter" we are having. It's part of the reason why I've been so quiet in game the past while.
I don't want you guys to think that Dolgrin only cares about crafting: he definitely has other interests, but regarding this ship and the captain, he has nothing left really holding him here. The accusations against the man have so far only proven to be rumor (in Dolgrin's eyes), and not a single person on the dock has any authority to really do anything (again, in Dolgrin's eyes). So aside from just standing back and watching the show while having a good smoke of his pipe, the only thing he would really be looking to do was make sure no innocent bystanders got hurt in any potential ruckus and/or intervene if anyone present appears truly villainous.

It's fine if Dolgrin wants to go away.
If you want to introduce a story thing as well, Dolgrin can go looking for other trouble, contacts, or opportunity as well.
I anticipate that pretty soon Amara may have information for the rest of you, or not... we shall see.

Hey guys -- sorry about the silence this week. Last week before the first week of the semester, and there've been a lot of random events and such, in addition to the rush of getting ready for next week. I've actually still got a thing this evening, and then have a face-to-face gameday tomorrow, but I will definitely be catching up on Sunday.

As far as your own effort goes, yes, earning capital is way more efficient than directly earning gold through skilled work.
Remember also that you get to roll the Income phase for your buildings and organizations that allow you to bring in some gold and some capital.
During the next "month" in-game, there will be the opportunity to earn some gold through adventuring, in case your gp income from your business isn't enough to allow you to realize your capital just yet.
Also, do keep track of the time it takes to build things. If you start stuff that's going to take more than a month, keep track somewhere of how far along it is.

Been busy with work lately so I have had a whole lot of time to work on it. Just trying to figure out how to do the rolls and basically get started is what is giving me problems. Wish they had included a detailed example of how to do this. I know that Wizards did that in some of their sourcebooks. At least I'm not calculating Thac0!

One thing I'm trying to figure out is if you can generate capital for someone else but I don't see it in the rules anywhere.

Who do you want to generate capital for?
Decide if you want to start any new building or recruiting projects. You don't have to, and probably won't every month. If you have the capital for it, though, it might be worth doing.
Next, figure out what kinds of capital you want to generate. Don't worry too much about it, but take a look at what rooms or teams you might want to expand or build next, and see what kinds of capital they want. Pick something on that list, and go for it.
Look at what skills and such can be used to generate capital. Decide how many days you want to spend yourself working on it. (Give yourself weekends off!) Make the check, and based on the skill result, see the table at the top of p. 79 for how much "unrealized" capital you get. Pay the gold based on the "Earned Cost" on page 77 to realize the capital.
(You can also buy capital right out by using the "Purchased Cost" on page 77.)
Finally, figure out how much income you get by adding up the bonuses from all of the various rooms and teams you have. Let me know if you want more info on this.

Dolgrim -- what you've done looks fine. I haven't checked all the numbers to make sure it's all make sense. Let me know if you want me to audit that to check.
One comment: you can earn things other than gp if you want. For instance, a Forge is capable of earning Goods as well. That can be useful if you want to expand more. It will tend to be much more efficient to earn capital this way than it will be to earn gp and purchase it later, if I am not woefully mistaken.

Once I've got all the regular phases in, I'll report on the Event phase -- which things can be quickly resolve, and which things will involve some playing out (which will probably also mean getting your friends involved-- metagame a bit and get the other players involved, please!)

Hello y'all! I want apologize for not posting as much as I used to do. Work has been very busy but I had planned to play a lot of catch up today since it was my day off. However, this morning my mom called me this morning around 8:30 am to let me know that our dog Deedee was bitten by a snake last night (I live separately from my parents in my own house but we had Deedee before I moved out). She called me about an hour or so ago to let me know that the vet thinks Deedee will make it but she'll be swollen up a good bit for a while. The snake bit her on her upper lip. But she seems to be doing okay from what my mom said. Deedee is on a great deal of medicines to help the swelling and all. We have to take her back his Friday so the vet can check her again just to be safe.
So I'm emotionally drained a bit so I apologize. I'll try and post sometime tonight hopefully. Again I just wanted to let everyone know. Thank y'all for understanding.

I'm off to a convention this weekend, so I'll be kind of busy. However, on Sunday, or early next week, I'll try to post a "Strategy Guide" style summary, with examples, for the whole capital business, that will hopefully help those of you who are struggling with it.

Sorry :(
I'm not adapting well to the beginning of the term.
I still do intend to get the summary of downtime written on the Wiki, and will pick things up with the next "episode" of action. I really hope I can get to that this week.
Can everybody else please check in?

*sheepishly checks in after disappearing for far too long*
I am with Sirith in that I plan to stay with this until the end, even with the Librarian's major indiscretion causing a major blow to his pride and reputation

I'm still intending to get that help file up on the Wiki so you guys can navigate the Ultimate Campaign downtime rules.
I do have a fall break coming up a week from today, so if I don't manage to get something up this weekend, next weekend is going to be a bit of a break for me, and I should be able to do it then.

Would you be willing to give us the link for that wiki again? I seem to have misplaced it. And I definitely need that walk-through because these rules are definitely... dense.
