Isaac |
"Should be a last resort, basher. She's hidin' under her faction's coat-tails and if we run in there blades out for the blood-letting the rest of the dustmen ain't goin' to care what we're about. We need to get in there, get the Dark of what's goin' on and proof that she's involved and get out without the Dusties tumbling to what we're about. Penning Toranna into the deadbook before we know what she's about ain't an option."
Isaac shrugs to Justin's remarks.
"A berk would have to be barmy and arrogant to openly challenge the Lady. She's cut down whole factions that she thought was a threat to Sigil, but she can't be everywhere at once. Whether spying falls under that or not.. no point in worrying about somethin' you can't predict. They'll hit the blinds if that's what they're about and it's got nothin' to do with us."

FYI they are Pathfinder style boots
Justin Case |
Justin nods in return at Isaac's comments as his eyes return to normal size, looking a little more composed.
"Right, I figure we're using the 'deliver expected prisoner' stunt to get inside. Then we render Torrana unconscious, and dig up the proof we need. Then leave like a demonic stirge was after our nether regions."
"I've got a spell that will allow me to change forms, I'll use it to look like a thug and carry in our 'prisoner'. Does anyone have invisibility or similar spells they can use to sneak in with us? Or use to stun or knock Torrana unconscious once we're in there? My spells tend to be a little more,... heavy on the non-subtle." He finishes wryly.
Karrin Kind |
"So you're assuming that Torrana is going to be at this meeting alone and that she doesn't intend to kill all of the low life thugs," Karrin says scratching her head, "I suppose that might make sense if she's got something nasty up her sleeve or has other ways of keeping people from blabbing, but if that's the case what do we have planed for that?"
Karrin seems genuinely confused.
"I mean if I was some sneaky evil schemer I think I'd make sure there were no witnesses either way."
Lady Bethany Archaise |
"Does anyone have invisibility or similar spells they can use to sneak in with us? Or use to stun or knock Torrana unconscious once we're in there? My spells tend to be a little more,... heavy on the non-subtle." He finishes wryly.
Bethany stays out of the planning for the most part, knowing that it is not really her strong suit. she does pipe up at Justin's question though.
"Unfortunately I have exausted all of my Arcane abilities during our earlier scuffle," she points to the scabbed scars on her arms to indicate her part in the fight."In this encounter I will keep everyone covered with my bow, although if trouble occurs I could take the fight to that b i t c h if need be. I am ont one to shy away from a chance to bloody someone with my sabre."

"I mean if I was some sneaky evil schemer I think I'd make sure there were no witnesses either way."
"Good point Karrin. I'm operating under the presumption that even low-life's operate under some sort of a code of conduct. If nothing else it's bad business to kill the bully boys that work for you when they actually do what you tell them to! Ok, let's presume that she's NOT going to be alone. She has no reason to kill the delivery boy, at least not right away, if she thinks they're just there to drop off, get paid and leave. If me and one other, I'm thinking either Isaac or Drazek, show up as the thugs who survived, with a prize on our shoulder, we should be able to get in without any problem. the problem is going to be getting OUT if things do go south. Or at least holding off until the rest of you can join the party. "

Justin grins at Bethany. "No problem. With even a LITTLE luck, this shouldn't turn into a slugfest anyway. If things get ugly just keep them off of us. And I've heard you sing. I'm sure that the rest of your skills are just as,... formidable." He adds with a side glance and smirk at Drazek.
"Ok, hourglass is emptying. Who's going in with me? Isaac or Drazek? I can change my appearance, and use a minor cantrip to make Nadire and us look like we've been through a fight. I'll also cast my translation spell so I'll be able to understand anything they say, in any language. IF things go sour, I've got a couple of summoning chants, and a flamesword charm. Are we ready?" He asks one more time, looking around.
Behind his cavalier attitude and trademark smirk, Justin is obviously a little tense. Although whether it's with excitement and anticipation, or nerves and worry, it's hard to tell.
Isaac |
"She knows me on sight, since I rattled my bonebox to her. Unless you want me to act like I'm switchin' sides, Drazek may be the better back-up. You planning on dragging Merle, Karrin and Nari in? If that's the case, mayhap all three of us should go in and I'll try'n find a helmet or something. Otherwise, I'll cool my heels outside."
Karrin Kind |
"Wait, I'm still confused," Karrin says, "is Toranna expecting the drop to occur in her base or something? I don't understand why we have to go in disguise or with one of us pretending to be a prisoner. How do the rest of us sneak in?"
Karrin scratches her head.
"I mean if the drop is on neutral groud why not just show up and start banging heads. That's what it's going to devolve to anyways, if there's no good reason why all this fancy deception and convoluted planing then why use it? 'The more complex your plan is the more that can go wrong, keep it simple stupid'."
Karrin adds that last bit in a voice that's clearly not her own, like she's mimicking someone, but who that someone is remains unexplained at the moment.
Isaac |
"Toranna's a Dustman. Drop's happening at the Mortuary: we go in charging, she calls the rest of her faction and we're scragged. That's why we go in disguised: she lowers her guard, we find out what she's about if we can, gauge how many bashers she can bring to bear before we make our next move. Only if the odds are in our favor do we take her down, otherwise we just look for proof of what she's about."
"As for questions of in and out, I can slip in like a second-story man, the rest of you coves will need disguises or invisibility, assuming we even need all of us there. Wouldn't hurt to have a few of us with our eyes and ears parked outside in case of trouble, either."
Justin Case |
Justin raises an eyebrow at the small elf's sudden attack of the giggles. But he nods at Isaac and turns to Karrin to speak.
"It probably will devolve into something closer to carnage than cooperation. But we're going to try anyway. I guess she, or 'they', thought that a couple of wannabe's had stumbled onto something, and they could just whack us with a couple of hired thugs. So we ARE going to keep it simple. We're giving them exactly what they think they want. A prisoner."
Justin smiles. "SO while they will undoubtedly be watching US, because I'm sure they're SO trusting,..." He smirks, "Nadire is the bait, she's also our ace in the hole. We tie her hands, loosely, so she can easily escape if needed, and deliver her 'unconscious'. Out of all of us only she can still use her powers without using her voice or her hands. I'll put 4 of us in a spell-link that will allow us to hear what the others whisper. 2 inside, 2 outside. Whichever Toranna decides to focus her attention on, Drazek and I, or Nadire, the other renders her unconscious, if possible. IF worse comes to worse, one of us simply opens the door for you. Or you can use your universal door opener." He says with a grin, nodding at Karrin;s axe.
"But the idea is to TRY to get in, find proof that Toranna and her friends are up to something involving inter-faction spying, and get out. WithOUT killing anyone."
"I like your second story man idea Isaac. With any luck we can make the delivery, and maybe Nadire can 'escape'. Or perhaps Karrin could be leading a 'rescue', on cue of course. The resulting distraction should make it easy for one or two of you to sneak in and search properly."
Karrin Kind |
"Well you guys make the plans then," Karrin says. Justin seemed a like Karrin when she first got into the mercenary business. He clearly liked to make plans but likely hadn't had many failures. Isac on the other hand seemed more like Tolleen, more grounded and pragmatic . . . well as pragmatic as an elf could get. If Isac was agreeing to the plan it was likely the best choice . . . that's if Karrin was reading Isac right. For all she knew he might hang out of windows by his toes to do something known as reverse chin ups . . . part of any nut-bar's regular exercise routine.
Nari was the quiet shy type, Karrin knew very little about them (being the loud outgoing type herself), but if she got past her fears she was likely a very good addition to the team. The quiet shy types were usually very good thinkers. Merle had great potential as well. She'd more then proven herself as a capable blaster in a couple of confrontations thus far . . . but Karrin worried that she wasn't yet very street smart. And if Karrin knew more then her Merle had likely led a very sheltered existence indeed!
Drazek was a card. The groups comedian. His delivery was far too gravelly but his deadpan was great! He did have a tendency to stare at people though. He was likely hard of hearing (like Karrin) but was too proud to admit it. And Lady Bethany seemed nice but Karrin could only hope that she wasn't aloof and prissy like the nobles Karrin had read about. She certainly wore less cloths then most nobles she'd seen but it was likely very hot from where Lady Bethany was from. She did seem to have a nice singing voice though!
Over all it seemed a good team, but Karrin saw some flaws . . . without a priest they were quite fragile, and long fights could wear them down. Also with Swift missing they didn't have any covert operatives. Having someone to scout out this drop off before they moved in would have been a huge benefit. Still, they seemed a good team, and Karrin thought they had great potential. However Karrin knew she wasn't the best judge of character.
Karrin wondered where her cat had wondered off too as well. Swift sometimes looked after Blacky, hopefully that cat hadn't followed that scout off somewhere . . .
Karrin's observations not mine!
Karrin Kind |
"But you know . . ." Karrin can't help but add, "if we needed a distraction we could tell our new contacts in the xaosmen what we discovered the dustmen have been up to. Might result in some violence we could use as a cover . . . or maybe we could earn ourselves some extra blades we play our cards right.
"Just a thought," Karrin adds with a shrug.

OK first write up for the n00bs
Mr. Swire:
Venturing to the Gatehouse Night Market, Swire decided to take a gander at the berks perusing the stalls. The Hive was usually lean pickings, but there was always a fat cony or two looking for a cut rate deal on stolen goods.
While sizing up the action at a sausage vendor's stall, Swire was witness to an altercation involving some tourists and a local gang of toughs he knew as the Dent Alley Bashers. It became clear the the DAB were getting scrubbed for their pains by the bashers from outside the Hive, and it was also clear that some dazzler had hired them, as the large ape that appeared out of thin air attested to.
Intrigued by the obvious power of the bashers, Swire nonchalantly followed them as they travelled. He was impressed by the spellslinger what jumped on the cloth seller's tent and did for the DAB's leader, obvious a hende lot. The bird lady was quite an eyefull as well.
>LINK TO FIGHT< Assume you saw all of it
The group went a few other places, but something in Swire's gut told him there was something to these cutters, something that smelled like opportunity. After the run of bum luck he'd had lately, he wasn't about to let this opportunity slip away.
Eventually, the path leads to the Copper Cauldron. Swire smiles, as he knows this particular bub house. He was passing acquintences with Herbert, the night barman, and had used this place as a cooling off spot on a few occasions when the Headheads had been on his heels for pilfering in the Great Bazaar. Herbert owed him a debt from a time when Swire made a blackmailing problem he was having go away. Herbert would often let Swire spend the night gratis, long as he crept out before Peaklight and didn't get noticed by his sister Bess.
Sidling into a side booth away from the main action, Swire picks up a few tidbits from the group he followed and their pals they meet in the common room. Ramona the server knows him from Herbert, and though she isn't all that friendly, she doesn't make any trouble for him.
Just as Herbert walks into the common room, the party all leaves for some place called the Silver Rose. Herbert sees his erstwhile friend and nods, pulling a nice pint of ale and having Ramona bring it over to Swire
Davi/Swire, you have a small appartment in the Hive, specifically in Goatswood District that is rented for another 30 days. You have been using that as a base.
Your move Mr. Swire...

"A fine notion, that. I think the Chaosmen might be better occupied when we scrag Toranna's partner, the Shadowknave. Casing the Mortuary may need a more delicate touch."
Plan as far as I know it: Justin and Drazek bring in Nari (or Merle) in disguise as the contact from the Illuminated, trying to figure out what Toranna's ultimate motive is. Isaac (and whoever else is inclined to be stealthy) will slip in behind them as back up and to scout out the Mortuary/delay any alarms. The rest of the team will stay in the area, waiting for a signal to rush in if necessary. Right?
Mr Swire |
"Thanks, love." Swire continues to sit in the booth, slowly drinking his pint. There's only two reasons people work together in Sigil, money and the Greater Good, and these cutters don't look like the Greater Good type. Of course, where there's people looking for money, there's plenty of opportunity to get some of it. If he's wrong and they're working on making the planes a better place (like they actually have a chance at that), well, that just leaves more gold sitting around for an enterprising Knight of The Post such as himself to take. Either way, he wants in.
With that last thought, Swire finishes his ale, stands up, and leaves for the Silver Rose.
Dungeon Monkey |
With that last thought, Swire finishes his ale, stands up, and leaves for the Silver Rose.
Swire walks into the dark, drippy, foggy Afterpeak and pads softly down the small street of Copper Court. Down the cul-de-sac is a large fountain, and on the other side is a building with a sign reading:
Silver Rose
inscribed on its door in faded gilt lettering. There once was a glass window fronting the street, but it has been bricked over. The door is shut, and there looks to be an alley on its left side leading to a locked iron gate.
Your choice knock or sneak..
Lady Bethany Archaise |
"I'll make sure to keep watch from above, in case anything bad happens"
She looks around at the group. "This could quite easily go very sour."
Seems like the plan is set. Advance away... I wonder how this will go down without a lot of our spells available?
Dungeon Monkey |
Someone knocks three times on the Silver Rose's door. Renkar looks up from Meldric, whom he is rebandaging.

Feel free to bring Swire in and make the pitch to have him join. I'll be back on tomorrow morn

Another intro:
Ekuur:
Ekuur had always honored the Elemental Flame, and he had found his vocation at the Temple of Sand and Flame deep in the Alluvial Sand Wastes east of the city of Tyr. Although a haven for contemplation and learning, Ekuur's temple also served as a fortress against the many perils faced by travelers to Tyr. It waxed prosperous as anything could in the endless wastes, using a hidden spring within its walls to make the desert bloom, at least in its immediate vicinity.
Eventually, this prosperity drew the dragon. This beast used its horrid Defiler magic to suck the life force from the temple, Ekuur's fellows falling in windrifts as their bodies withered.
The high priest in terror unlocked an ancient artifact that had lay under lock and key for millenia. Hoping to reflect the defiling magic against the marauding dragon, he activated it. It was known as the Mirror of Pain. Ekuur assisted, as one of the few clerics left standing.
Ekuur is unsure of what happened next, but there was a massive flash of energy from the ancient item and a howl of utter pain from the dragon. Ekuur felt as if he was being stretched between two Kanks, then he awoke on the cobbles of Sigil.
At first he was horrified, and amazed at the constant rain. For days he was actually ill as his body attempted to cope with the sudden surfeit of water all about him. He tried to get his bearings, and his aimless wanderings finally led him to the Temple District in the Lady's Ward. There he found refuge in a Temple of Elemental Fire, though the rituals were quite foreign to him. They actually worship Kossuth, a proclaimed suzerain of fire elementals, and the temple priests are a collection of bizarre creatures from many distant worlds.
Ekuur has discovered that not many come from Athas. Apparently the sphere it sits in was sealed off from casual planar travel long ago, possibly by the ancient defiling that occured back when it was a more clement world. Whatever happened, Ekuur feels very out of place in the Cage.
One Antipeak, as he was wandering Sigil's streets in the rain and gawking at some huge gates made of steel (something he still has issues with is the careless waste of this place.) he noticed a faded flyer on a stained brick wall:
Adventuring company seeking members for missions both inside and outside Sigil. Ask for Renkar at the offices of the Silver Rose: Copper Court, Copperman's Way, Market Ward.
Intrigued, Ekuur decides that perhaps it is time for him to seek out some new companions, and perhaps find his way back to Athas. He asks for directions and makes his way to the bustling boulevard known as Copperman's Way. He locates the Silver Rose, but it seems shut. However there is a tavern at the corner of the small cul-de-sac, so he enters to see if he can find any information. As he goes in, a furtive-looking chap exits.
Ekuur enters the dark and quiet tavern. There aren't a lot of folks in the common room, as the hour is late. A grey-bearded bald man sits behind the bar, pouring a few ales for a young server to distribute.
There you go :)

"I'll go axe who it is," Karrin says, grabbing her weapon just in case, "everyone stay sharp, could be anyone. We might have been followed."
Karrin moves down to the door and opens it a crack (ready to brace herself behind it should someone try to force their way inside).
"Yes," she says to the stranger, "what can I do for you?"

Another intro:
Ekuur:
** spoiler omitted **...
Ekuur walks into the tavern, but gives the man who exits as he enters a close stare. Funny, he looks familiar to me. Ekuur shakes his head. No, there is no way I could know him. No matter.
Walking up to the bar, Ekuur still marvels at the huge variety of beverages available, and the amount of brass, iron, and steel used simply for drinking vessels or plates. Amazing. Ceramic is so much more practical; even if metal is so plentiful, it still seems a waste to use it for such trivial items as eating utensils and cups. Or as coinage! Metal with no other purpose than to jingle around in your pocket! Even having met some of the (very) few Athasians living in the Cage and being ‘filled’ in on the customs and way things worked here, Ekuur often still found himself bumbling over things. He kept a few ceramic pieces and bits as reminders of his home, and almost ended up in a brawl when he tried to pay for a meal with them instead of the gold and platinum he had gotten working and performing healing at the temple of Kossuth.
The mul known as Grefft, a former Gladiator of Urik now living in the Clerk’s Ward as a simple porter, had become sort of a friend, but he had no desire to travel and experience this new world (or multiple worlds, as the case may be). A lifetime of forced servitude in the arenas made his simple, quiet service almost seem paradise, but Ekuur had no interest in such a life. Clearing his throat to draw the barkeep’s attention, Ekuur states, “I saw a handbill seeking ‘adventurers’ on a wall. It said to ask for ‘Rendar’ at the Silver Rose, but the Silver Rose appears closed. So I am inquiring after Rendar here.”
Karrin Kind |
The man leans against the wall with a vaguely unpleasant smile. "Evening, cutter. Mind if I step in, I have a business proposition for you all."
Karrin eyes the man, mostly trying to gauge if he's alone or not, and after a moments consideration she opens the door wide enough to let the man in.
"Come on in," Karrin says, "but no funny business, we got an extra chair and plenty of rope."
Mr Swire |
"Come on in," Karrin says, "but no funny business, we got an extra chair and plenty of rope."
"Don't worry cutter, I saw what some of you lot did to the Dent Alley Bashers. I may be a thief, but I'm no berk." Smirking, the man enters the tavern. heading towards the largest group of people he can see. (Assuming the party's sitting around the common room or something similar. If not, just ignore the next paragraph.)
The man enters the room, pulls a chair up to the table and sits down. "Evening, cutters. Let's get down to business. You need a good old knight of the post, if I'm guessing right. I need some jink. I work with you, you get a thief, I get some jink, we all win. So, we got ourselves a deal?"

"Awfully convenient," Karrin says, "we need someone to do some scouting in the mortuary, almost too convenient, then again Toranna or Shadowknave would need to recruit someone who was awful confident or awful fanatical to their cause to walk in here to attempt to lead us into a trap. You don't look like someone who's all that fanatical about anything."
Karrin looks to her companions
"What do you guys think? Do we take him on or do I get some more rope?"
Renkar Sha'Hagmid |
Renkar frowns at the newcomer.
"Well, it is conveient, but sometimes the Fates roll in that certain manner."
He gives the grinning Swire a stare

"Ren-Kar. I have not been reading your language for long." Ekuur reaches into his pocket, removes a gold coin, and places it before the barkeep. "No drink, I am not thirsty. But I thank you for help."
Immediately turning and walking back outside, Ekuur shivers a bit. I still cannot get used to how chilly this place is. I may need to invest in some of the heavier cloaks and clothing I see some people wear; Grefft tried to tell me, but even his warnings were just not sufficient for a priest of flame.
Hurrying up the street, back to the Silver Rose, Ekuur is a bit surprised to see the swarthy man he passed going in standing at the door, speaking to a woman who lets him in.
"Wait!" he calls, quickening his pace, but his call goes unheaded as the door is shut. When he does get to the door, he raps loudly with the bottom-end of his trikal.
Justin Case |
Justin eyes the newcomer with a raised eyebrow.
"MY luck never runs that way." He mutters, but smiles pleasantly as the Bold as Brass newcomer enters, and gives his pitch. He eyes Renkar doubtfully as it looks as if he;s going to let the man join the party, then shrugs. He remembers briefly what it was like to be down and out in Sigil, (Was it really only a couple of days ago?) and they really COULD use the extra help! HE turns to Karrin.
"YOur getting our 'friends' in the Xaos group is a great idea Karrin. IF we played it right, we could probably get them to take care of the riff-raff Toranna might have guarding the place. But First, we need to know what's really going on, and get proof, before we start tearing up anything. Although I must admit a love a good blast-n-grab as much as the next wizard."
Yeah, I think that Isacc summed it up nicely, let's roll with that plan, and save the Xaos gang for the 'big' battle! Because we are all low on spellpower, I plan on cutting and running if it gets too hairy. We can always come back later,... with 'friends',... ;)

Ekuur starts a bit, as from a distance, he had assumed the woman at the door was human. Seeing her sharp teeth, red skin, and silver-capped horns, he knew that assumption was wrong. Tiefling, I believe, he thought to himself. They seem to be quite common in this city.
"You are Renkar? I saw your sign on a steel gate for 'adventurers'. It said to inquire at the Silver Rose for Renkar; thus I am here inquiring," he says, in a thick, and likely for Karrin, unplaceable accent.

An older gentleman appears at Karrin's side. He moves very quietly, and has a seamed face and a greying head of hair. ALthough Ekuur would guess him long past 40, he seems to be in excellent shape. His clothes are well made, but servicable. He carries a slender sword on his hip. He looks at Ekuur.
"Ser, I am Renkar. I did indeed have some bills posted. In fact you have come at a very opportune time. "
Renkar pauses
"Now according to the Rule of Threes, we will meet one more applicant. Come inside ser, and we shall palaver about your prospective employment."
Renkar gestures for Ekuur to enter.
"May I ask your name? You seem to be a recent arrival to our city, yes?"
