Chronicles of the Silver Rose Company

Game Master Patrick Curtin

This campaign is my attempt to play a canonical Planescape campaign using the updated Pathfinder ruleset. The game actually predates the release of Pathfinder, but we have managed to update as we have needed.

The large carraige rattles along the dark cobbled streets of the Cage bearing Hanali, Eir, Karrin, Greep and Merle along to the mansion of Guarsimo Har'Jollek, in the Lady's Ward.

The four men at arms led by Hanali's personal bodyguard Noresh take the corners of the carraige and alight on the footboards. The frequent potholes make their mail shirts jingle.

Heading down Copperman Way, the carraige makes good time through the Antipeak traffic and joins others of its sort as they wend their way to the mansions of the Nobles' District. Threading through the wide boulevards, the carraige turns down a street with the sign 'Back Row' at its corner. A minor jam of carraiges and palanquins clusters around a gilded wrought iron gate. Upon the gate is an estucheon featuring a golden sheaf of wheat on a blue background. Underneath is the legend Har'Jollek.

The men at arms descend to the street and open the carraige doors. They then assist everyone to descend and then they form up two front two back in the group. the group walks to the entrance where liveried servants and guards welcome the guests into the courtyard. The guards and servants are all wearing the wheat sheaf sigil.

The group fans out, Hanali greeting folks that she knows. The weather is foggy and dreary, and the crowd is moving inexorably towards the immense mansion at the far end of the well-tended landscape of the courtyard.

The Har'Jollek mansion is a wonder. Marble and porphyry stones create an baroque front. A crowd of exotic people mill about with drinks in hand. As the group approaches the steps Hanali turns to Greep and Merle.

"This is where we have to part company for a while. I see a tent over there" Hanali points "It looks as if the retainers are having their refreshments there." Noresh and the other men at arms salute Hanali and wander off towards the tent.

Hanali, Eir and Karrin ascend the sweeping steps to the front door. At the top of the steps a rotund man in a burgundy tunic and hose dripping with jewelry greets the guests. He bows with a flourish and beams a smile at Hanali.

"My dear Hanali! How are you? How is your dear father? Who have you brought to my little party this evening?"

Hanali curtseys and smiles in turn.

"Guarsimo, always a pleasure to attend your magnificent soirees. My father is well, as am I. I have brought two dear friends, Eir Haakonen and Karrin Kind. They are associates of Renkar Sha'Hagmid, whom you might recall."

Guarsimo bows to Eir and Karrin

"Always a pleasure to make the acquaintence of two lovely ladies. I do remember your associate Renkar quite well, he assisted me in several ventures years back. I hope you will all enjoy the party!"

"Pleased ta meet ya," Karrin says, "This is a really big house you got here! How many people live in a place like this? It looks like it could house a hundred or so! I know it's not that many, sometimes big castles only have a couple dozen . . . and that's counting guards and servants! Oh, where are my manners, you know all about that . . . it's just that I've met someone with such a big home. And yes I know I talk too much . . . but talking isn't what I'm good at . . . it's like a hobby or something. I am good at eating . . . I eat as well as I fight actually . . . I forgot what my point was . . . do you have any refreshments?"

Merle heads towards the tent beginning to regret agreeing to this. Having to wait outside like a commoner? This was hardly suitable for someone like her after all she was a power full mage and not some measly thug in armour.

Bribes always welcome

Merle, Greep and the guards all head down to the enormous tent set up at the side of the Har'Jollek mansion. Lanterns are strung across its roof, illuminating what looks to be a quite lively party.

Tables are set upon the grassy ground, many of them occupied by exotic-looking cutters. Servants scurry to and fro bearing drinks and food to the tables. A large bar area with several busy bartenders works a large crowd gathered around it. A raised dias supports a trio of bards playing some lively tunes.

Merle notices a table with some catfolk like herself. Their fur markings and style of dress are unfamilliar to her, but they are her kind. They sit drinking Raarewl, a potent beverage of fermented milk and blood that catfolk find very delicious.

Greep also sees a familliar-looking face. There is a Rorc at this party! The Rorc is dressed in chainmail and sports a tabard with a mining pick superimposed on a skull. The rorc is chatting with several beings that also look orcish, but have dark brown skins rather than the usual greenish tone. These brown orcs are also dressed in the mining pick/skull tabards.

There are still many open tables, the tent is truly vast, and there are easily 200 cutters at this party. Greep and Merle see Githzeri, Beholders, Thri-Kreen, Slaadi, and a host of other exotic folks all drinking whatever beverages their species likes and eating many different dishes as well.

Merle and Greep also notice the discrete presence of hard-looking cutters around the periphery of the tent, all wearing the wheat sheaf tabard. Obviously Ser Har'Jollek doesn't want the festivities to get out of hand.

Feel free to sit down and order something. If you want to interact with anyone just post what you want to do. I am still feeling poorly, but I will try and check in later.

Guarsimo smiles at the ebullient Karrin

"My little house is quite a pile, yes. My ancestor, also a Guarsimo was a big beliver in opulence, and we have kept at it ever since. I don't even have a clue how many folks live here. If you count all the servants probably close to a hundred."

Guarsimo tilts his head slightly

"Are you from Oerth Miss Kind? I seem to hear a slight Oerthan accent in your speech. Perhaps the northern lands? I have done a lot of business in the past with Oerth, but the recent difficulties there and the many portal closings have made it hard to turn a profit."

Guarsimo gestures to the group.

"I would love to chat more, but I can see the line is backing up here. Please enter and be welcome! Refreshments are inside, as well as libations!"

The group enters and is greeted by the ballroom. Exotic wood lines the floor, polished to a mirror finish. Marble archways march off into the distance, each arch leading to a sitting area. Magical lights are set in the walls, giving off a muted yellow glow. A curved ceiling surmounts all, with a huge mural dedicated to of all things, the farmer raising crops and various fertility deities. Tables dressed in white linens, silver cutlery and crystal glassware are placed about.

The ballroom is crowded with a glittering group of exotic characters. There are tables everywhere, but most people are just mingling at this point. There are servants running about in fancy tunics with the stylized wheat sheaf embroidered on them. They seem to be carrying out a panoply of different foodstuffs to the few cutters seated and eating. A polished mahogany bar is placed in a discrete corner, and a small group of partygoers chat and mingle while the bartenders mix up exotic drinks.

Hanali looks over and waves at a strange basher who is standing alone.

"We should meet this cutter ladies, he is often a patron of adventuring companies."

The three move over to greet the being pointed out by Hanali. He is possibly an orc, but it is hard to tell. He is dressed in gorgeous finery and dripping with gold and jewels. His claok is pinned with an odd sigil, a silver skull with a mining pick superimposed. His facial features bespeak an orcish heritage, but his skin is a dark brown color and looks very rough. He sees Hanali and waves. The two trade welcoming kisses and Hanali steps back.

"Eir, Karrin may I introduce Urgrek of Clan Earthborn. Urgrek is the Factor for Deathdelve Metals in Sigil, and he is Sub-cheiftan of Clan Earthborn. Urgrek, this is Karrin Kind and Eir Haakonen, two associates of mine."

The brown orc bows stiffly and rumbles in a deep voice.

"A pleasure ladies. How is your father Hanali? I need to make some time to speak with him. I have just received news that a new mithril vein was discovered back home."

Turning to Eir and Karrin.

"So what business are you three ladies involved in?"

Feel free to interact. Still feeling crappy, but I will check in later.

"You might not believe it because of our cloths but we're hard nosed mercenaries. I have to say it feels a little funny walking around without my axe and mitt but our boss Renkar Sha'Hagmid thought that we might be able to stir up some business. I'm not exactly sure how I can do that but I'm sure gonna try!"

Merle will sit down at the bar and order a glass of Raarewl plus whatever Greep wants.

"Greep you mentioned something about a briefing want to fill me in here?"
She asks as she trys to avoid staring at some of the more exotic guests.

Urgrek grins, revealing tusks inlayed with gold. He gives Eir an appreciative once over.

"I am always happy to meet mercenaries and troubleshooters, especially when they come wrapped in such pleasing packages."

Urgrek glances at Karrin

"You wouldn't know it from these party clothes but I am a captain of the Earthborn Rangers back at my realm. I never judge beings by their outward appearance. Where I live, that is an invitation to catastophe."

Urgrek sips his glass of purple wine

Sorry hun, I got knocked out by another cold, it's not my year for health it seems.

Swift smiles a little sadly at being the only member of the group on two legs, more than a little tempted to take on her catform she resists especially if they're ot go on a trip to the Great Bazaar, someone would be needed to translate the feline and draconic afterall.

Setting out with the rest of the group she answers Sephs question it a quiet voice.

Feline;

Spoiler:
::Actually, that black cat was my other form. Please don't tell the others though, I'm sure you and Merle would easily work it out with time but it's advantageous to keep two seperate lives sometimes so I don't tell the others. Whilst not a familiar, I am decended from them, I'm a tibbit::

Setting off to the Grand Bazaar Swift lets Seph rest on her shoulder if he wants to and leaves her other shoulder free for Mercutio should he get tired of fluttering around.

The plan for Swift for the evening is to take a little time to just forget everything and have some fun, a small part of her is sure she'll run across someone or something that reminds her of her current headaches but she hopes to have as much fun as possible before that happens!

Swift, Seph and their animal companions decide to walk the Great Bazaar and sample a bit of the Antipeak nightlife. The darkened sky outlines the fires burning on the other side of Sigil, like a blazing stripe of stars across the night.

Copperman Way is filled with the night's revelers. The crowd is wilder, darker than the Peaktime. Demons and Devils tread the cobbles along with strange creatures Swift or Seph have never seen. Tumblers, beggars, bubbers and cony catchers all thread their way through the carraiges and riding mounts racing to and fro across the wide boulevard.

Mercutio darts and wheels above their heads, often drawing looks even from jaded Cagers. He alights on Swift for a moment then launches skyward again when something else catches his eye.

The Great Bazaar is awash with revelry. Drunken patrons spill from full ale houses, chatting and bubbing in the foggy air. An acrobatic crew of Xoasitects dressed in fools motley prance around the group singing their babbletounge.

Six Stingers a throw
It's off to the Slags yeh go
A Girl, Dragon and cat
Where's the fun in that?
A barrel a glass and a key
That's all I'll need from thee.

The mummers prance on into the bazaar crowd.

Swift and Seph see an elven bistro still seating guests. Several sylvan animals are noticible among the patrons so it might be an interesting place to take the menagerie.

The possibilities are endless if you want to shop, schmooze, drink, just post a desired course of action. You are smack dab in the biggest market in the biggest trading city in the multiverse

Urgrek nods at Karrin and Eir

"Ah so Renkar is running his own outfit. Very nice. I admired his work when we hired his old company during the Xorn Wars."

A striking young female comes up to the three. She is dressed in a very fancy gown. It takes a moment, but Eir and Karrin realize that she is quite possibly the most beautiful half orc they have ever seen. There is a family resemblance, and she has a similar skin tone, but much more smooth than Urgrek's flesh. Urgrek turns and smiles then says.

"Ladies this is my daughter Azaria. Azaria this is Eir Haakonen and Karrin Kind. I believe you know Hanali Hal'Oight?"

The girl, Azaria, bows to Eir and Karrin. She touches cheeks to Hanali

"Good to see you again Hanali. Eir, Karrin it is a pleasure to meet you."

Urgrek turns back to the three women.

"Where is your company based?"

female Tiefling 12th level Duskblade

"Near the Copper Cauldron," Karrin says, "I hope you know where that is cus I not sure I do. This city is a little bit strange to me yet."

Karrin looks over the orcs, "I don't mean to be rude, but what sort of race are you? I'm a tiefling, horns and everything," Karrin says pointing to her silver capped horns, "I think you must be from a very different world then the one I came from because I don't think I've ever seen your like before. Although to be honest, until I started exploring the plains, I don't think I've ever seen another tiefling before either."

Eir greets the young woman, congratulating Urgrek:

"You must be very proud of having such a stunningly beautiful daughter, sir. Do you have any other family?"

]

Urgrek looks at Karrin.

"We are Clan Earthborn. Our ancestors were orcs once, but millenia ago our clan was stranded on the Elemental Plane of Earth. Our ancestors survived, and eventually thrived. We have made alliances with the heartfolk of the plane, and are descended from them as well."

Urgrek smiles at his daughter.

"Azania is my youngest daughter by my wife Sarralina. She is a scion of the Sigilian House Fel'Giot, and an Aasimar, much like young Hanali here."

Urgrek smiles.

"I'm afraid ethnic distinctions become blurry in the Cage."

Looking over at Eir

"I am very thankful for Azania, who keeps my house while I am in Sigil. My other children remain with my wife at our home in Deathdelve. They are mostly grown these days. Urgrek my son patrols the frontier caverns and my other daughter Havarat studies magic at the court of Entremoch, a signal honor to my House of RedAxe"

Male Cat

Seph goes very quiet as he learns Swifts secret for a moment some of the memories of what he used to be come to the surface quickly fading but remaining long enough for him to remember what he once was. She could change from cat to humanoid whenever she felt like it? She got to have the best of both worlds while he was stuck like this unable to talk normaly, to read or to even open a door? Unsure of what to do Seph goes very quiet trembling slightly on Swifts shoulder.

If there is anything specific you wanted to ask before leaving feel free to post and I will retcon

Hanali leads them around a magnificent dance floor where couples spin to a full orchestra playing a waltz-like tune. She stops at a table of what look to be winged monkeys, about halfling sized. As Karrin and Eir look closer they realize that the wings are some sort of gliding flaps like a flying fox. A simple bright-colored linen tunic covers their fur. The tunics are crossed with well-tooled leather bandoleers with many rings and pouches sewn in. There are four beings in all, three females one male. Hanali greets the male and the oldest female with a slight bow and says

"Charath and Massana. These are two of my troop mates Karrin Kind and Eir Haakonen."

Hanali turns to Eir and Karrin.

"Eir and Karrin these two beings are Troop Master Charath and Gatherer Massana. The two others are Fahar and Omera their daughters. They are travellers from a world known as Bracken."

The four monkey-like beings nod gravely.

"Troop Master Charath has come to Sigil to recruit an expedition against the Hive Lord, a villanous being who threatens their home realm."

Charath nods, then speaks in a surprisingly deep and rich accented Common.

"Indeed Spiral's Daughter, we have found many who would be willing, and with the Great One's grace we shall prevail."

Karrin is soon going to town with the several plates and the leg of mutton. Hanali points out a few revelers as they eat.

"There's Cheng Zhe, the ambassador from a prime country called Fusang. He's dealing with a nomad incursion to his nation, little too rarified a job for us.

"That swarthy good-looking cutter with the six horns on his brainbox and the leather getup is Gravex Null. He claims to be a byblow of the Demon Lord Grazz't, even has the six fingers, so he might be telling the truth. He does a lot of bloodcrow work in the Grey, scavenging the Blood War battlefields for 'used' weapons and armor.

"See the cutter with the wings and the bird feet? That's Koe. He does a lot of courier work and shipments back and forth along the planes. He's an Asura, but he's been banished from the Holy Host for some reason or another. He does a lot of work with my father.

"That cutter over there is a wizard named Hughmar Fessenbech. Chant on him is he's a rabid book collector, has one of the best private libraries in the Cage. We have to introduce ourselves, he is known to pay top jink for books, and he often hires folks to find specific texts."

The erinyes is dressed in a tight black silk number, and she is on the arm of a fancy-dressed portly human-looking cutter with a lot of jewels and gold on. Karrin doesn't think Veria has spotted her yet.

Spoiler:
Oh my new employer asked if I wanted to come along as a guard with greep over there while they went to the main party.

Part of Merle was telling her she was being a bit looser with her tongue than she would normally be unfortuantly that voice was being drowned out by her very low tolerance of drink.

Bribes always welcome

Spoiler:
::Is your Pride Matron in there as well? We are here for another few hours. Snarl has to ask a few of these monkeys for some favors, galling though that is. We are staying in the Forest Distrct at The Waterhole Inn while in the city.::

Merle you have heard of that inn, it caters to most feline species. It was a little out of your budget to stay there, which is how you ended up at the Red Stag.

:: If you are interested there is a challenge arena attached to the inn. There are some good matches there most nights if you would like to come along?::

We were replacing a wax ring, not too difficult, but not particularly fun either.

Thankfully Karrin is able to stop herself from doing a spit take when she spots the devil and she's able to cover it up with only some minor choking. Karrin quickly knocks a fork off the table so she can duck under the table and hide.

"That devil over their is known as Veria," Karrin says from under the table, "she's a friend of Zigel's. I don't think I want to meet her right now. Could someone tell me when it's safe to pop up?"

Sure I'd be more than happy to come along

The strong fermented drink it seemed was also overcoming her common sence as well.

Karrin's hand snakes up and snatches a turkey leg from her plate and pulls it under the table with her.

Happy Canadian Thanksgiving everyone

Hanali frowns when Karrin dives under the table.

"Karrin, please do come out. You are making a spectacle of yourself. No one can hurt you here."

Hanali rolls exasperated eyes at Eir.

"Anyway ... Over there is one of the biggest gem merchants in the Cage, name of Murish Mal'Gevred. He runs a store called Facet on the border of the Lady's Ward, near where we met our current employer Lucius Sar'Ormand. We'll have to go say hello, you never know when you might need a gem merchant ally."

Hanali sips her Shiraz

"There's a berk who thinks his brainbox is the Spire and we all revolve around it." Hanali points to a tall blonde fellow with a square jaw and a booming laugh dressed in a dark blue velvet tunic and hose. He is with a group of youngish well-dressed people drinking, eating and laughing together. "Thornton Helmdaar IV. He's an up-and-comer in the Fraternity of Order. Chant on the street says he'll be a Bureau Chief soon, possibly running the Vault of Knowledge. I tried to cosy up to him a bit a few cycles back but he is an insuffrable boor."
