Chronicles of the Silver Rose Company

Game Master Patrick Curtin

This campaign is my attempt to play a canonical Planescape campaign using the updated Pathfinder ruleset. The game actually predates the release of Pathfinder, but we have managed to update as we have needed.

Blayze Female Aasimar Gunslinger (Mysterious Stranger) 2/ Paladin (Holy Gun/Divine Hunter) 9

As....Justin....at least she thought that's what the fiendtouched girl with the axe called him.......comes swooping out o the tunnel to grab her around the waist she manages not to scream....but just barely.

Even as she's registering his words, her let's go, her body reacting as years of training kick in and she lands in a roll, coming up gun drawn, her momentum taking her into a stride towards some gigantic undead monstrosity.

These people definitely had style.

"You should surrender undead thing before my allies talk you to a second death".

With Hamar's deadpan delivery it is hard to tell if he is joking or... not.

His blades move in a deadly swirl as his feet start to move.

I was waiting for Rhiannon to go, but I might as well take my second attacks now

haste attack: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (16) + 12 = 28 +2 for flanks

Female Human Cavalier 8 (Order of the Dragon)

Did the math wrong. I took 132 damage. I have 95 HP. Pretty much done for

The devastating blow sends Rhiannon's broken body flying from the saddle to crash down onto the dark stone unmoving.

Ouch. I am going to assume since Blayze is now up and running we should write a nice exit scene for Rhiannon

Rhiannon lands heavily on the black flagstones of the temple floor, her bones shattered by the immense spiked skulls of the monster's morningstar. She feels herself floating upwards as her spirit's hold on her body weakened. She could see herself now, lying jumbled like a ragdoll on the floor.

She could sense other things as well. The air was thick with ghosts. None were powerful enough to interact with the living, but they crowded about the fight, pale milky eyes alight with avarice and lust. They turned to look at Rhiannon, but they all flinched and turned away as if they had accidentally stared at the sun.

Rhiannon felt herself fly upward, leaving this horror world behind. She suddenly found herself standing on Yggdrasil again, feeling normal. However, it was not Yggdrasil. A small odd creature like a cross between a fox and an elephant hopped towards her

Greetings Rhiannon. I am Lauralia. I felt your passing, and I thought I would guide your spirit away from that tainted, evil place. I have brought you to my future potentiality here to allow you a choice. You can move along naturally, or I can bring your soul wherever you want. If you wish it, I could reincarnate you in Hanalindali where I am planted. They still fight there and could use strong arms. The choice is yours

New round everyone. Karrin, was that attack you posted above for the new round?

Just gonna mention that he has to keep making reflex saves every round in which he attempts to use the weapon for the duration of the grease spell.

Hamar sees Rhiannon go down and files into a Rage.

While he did not know her well, she was an ally and allies need to be avenged.

Human Wiz 12 (Evocation)

Justin's eyes go wide.

"RHIANNON!"

'No. No. Nonononono,...'

Justin had been hurt. He'd seen the others injured. But never more than Ekuur and a few blessings could take care of. Somehow, as much as he'd 'grown up' recently, it still seemed like a game. A dangerous game, but it was fun. Pushing your limits, testing yourself, learning new abilities, hanging out with friends,... but he was pretty sure from the way Rhiannon's body went flying and was lying there, she wouldn't be getting back up. Her magical horse fading away with a scream of it's own a moment later confirmed his fears.

The others had seen Justin happy, sad, p!$$ed, and confused. Until now, they had never actually seen him,... angry.

His angelic wings flap slightly as they raise him a little higher, so he is actually looking down upon the giant mummy. Before he was glowing just slightly, enough to notice him in a dim room. He is glowing brightly now.

"Mister,..." Justin says in a calm, cold voice that seems to lower the temperature in the room even as flames spring to life in his hands.

"Your going to wish that you had STAYED dead. You just bought yourself a WORLD of pain! You better hope those bandages are fireproof!"

Muttering in arcane gibberish, Justin draws fiery symbols that stay in the air long after his flaming finger is done tracing them. With a cry of grief, he shoves his hand through the symbol, his gloves, ring and necklace all glowing as he screams FUEGO! FUEGO MAXIMUS!

Ray of Flame, Ranged Touch Attack: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27

Caster Level Check (Including ALL bonuses to CL for Feats, items, etc being used on this spell): 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (8) + 15 = 23

Fire Damage: 7d6 + 4 + 4d6 ⇒ (6, 3, 5, 2, 1, 4, 5) + 4 + (1, 4, 2, 5) = 42
+50% dmg from Necklace (Empowered Spellshard) +21 = 63pts fire dmg. AND make reflex roll vs DC: 16 or catch on fire

Nitpicky details (High lvl wiz getting complicated) ;P

Spoiler:

OK, Ray of Flame is 1st lvl (3.x Ed) spell. It is ranged touch and does 1d6 per 2 CL. (Max 5dice)

Justin is Wiz 9, (CL 9) + 1Cl from Tattoo Feat, +1CL from Thematic Feat, +1CL from Fiery Burst Feat, +1 CL from Ring of Fire, +2Cl from Caster gloves, = CL15.

Spell was memorized w/ Intensified Feat, (+5 levels to spell dmg max) So it was 7d6 base dmg, +4 from Wiz bonus damage, + 4d6 from ring of fire, (used all 3 charges for the day) + 50% for Empowered Spellshard (Amulet)

Yeah, that was his best shot for a 1st level spell. :) He really should have saved the ring charges for the Intensified fireball, but he's mad. :P

"How do YOU like it?!? And I'm just getting started!"

Human Wiz 12 (Evocation)

"Azata! Keep it pinned down! Karrin, Hamar, everyone else GET BACK! Keep it at range!" Justin shouts in a voice that does Karrin's imitation of a drill sergeant proud.

"Keep him circled for ONE minute! I'm going to bury this dusty b@$t@rd so deep no one will ever find him!"

The summoned Azata Bralani whoops a war cry and fires two more arrows that fly like lightning bolts at the giant mummy.

Azata Att Ranged: +1 composite longbow +12/+7 (1d8+6/×3)

ATT #1: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (13) + 12 = 25
Dmg #1: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9

ATT #2: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26
Dmg #2: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10

female elan Psion (Kineticist) 10

Nari's scream was as much raw emotion as it was sonic power. She had seen death before, but that never made it any easier. And Rhiannon had been her friend. She was good and kind-hearted and she had deserved better than this. She deserved better than to be broken and tossed aside like a child's toy.

Maintaining concentration on energy current, Ref DC 20 for half damage.
Sonic Damage: 9d6 - 9 ⇒ (4, 1, 6, 6, 1, 4, 2, 2, 3) - 9 = 20

Bribes always welcome

Well, tallying the damages.....

Karrin's massive swings cut the mummy deeply, as do Hamar's. The arrows of the Bralani and Nari's scream pummel it. But the coup the grace occurs when Justin's fury focuses into a blinding scarlet beam. The undead horror screams as its wrapping smoulder, then ignite. The ray chews stright through its body, striking the floor and cracking the stone with its violent heat.

The monster falls, smoking, to the floor.

CONGRATS! That was a 200+ HP beast, well done. everyone gains a level!

female Tiefling 12th level Duskblade

Karrin's right connects with the giant's jaw as he tumbles to the floor, but Karrin practically runs though him (a la, dark souls rag doll physics) as she runs to her fallen companion.

"Rhiannon!" Karrin cries, "Ekuur, we got to heal her, she's . . . oh Rao, she's hurt real bad. Rhiannon, I'm sorry, I'm sorry . . . it should have been me. It's my fault. It's all my fault."

Karrin cradles the fallen knight in her arms, unable to control her emotions, and the tears flow freely.

Hamar nods to his companions grimly, even for the Barbarian a win does not feel like a win when a ally falls.

Hamar sheathes his blades and heads back down into the tomb.

Human Wiz 12 (Evocation)

Justin observes the giant's battered and scorched body topple to the floor with a very un-angelic gratification. He snarls "Yeah!" When Karrin sucker-punches the mummy before he even finishes falling. From above he spits on the still-smoldering corpse, causing a brief sizzle.

Then the realization sets in, and he lowers slowly to the floor, his angelic form fading away.

"Rhiannon,... no,..." He looks at the others, and stumbles slowly over to where Karrin holds Rhiannon's battered form in her arms. He dares to hold his breath as the ever -stoic Ekuur softly declares he will try something, and prays,... The Athasian cleric meets his eyes a moment later, and gives a brief shake of his head. Justin visibly droops.

The mage puts his hand on Karrin's other shoulder, and echoes Nari's softly-spoken sentiment.

"Being in charge doesn't make it your fault Karrin. Any more than this world being dead is your fault. Shards and Shells. I went into the chamber below, for all we know, my magic woke that,... thing,... up. That means it's my fault. Shards, I should have cast more spells before we entered. I had more protection spells,..." He chokes, wanting to get Karrin out of her well of grief before she falls in.

Justin looks around hopelessly. "Look Karrin,... Rhiannon joined us of her own free will, and we all knew the risks. We all knew, this, was a real risk. Um,... It doesn't make it any easier. And it sure as Hades doesn't make it right. But it also does NOT make it your fault. Nari's right. Rhiannon wouldn't blame you. Don't blame yourself."

Justin's mouth keeps moving, as if he wants to say more, but nothing comes out.

Hamar wrote:

Hamar turns to Justin, "Wizard, we must get back down to that burial chamber. There is much there to be examined".

Justin squeezes Karrin's shoulder once more, then turns and slowly follows Hamar. He pauses, goes over to the mummy, casts a brief charm and scans the body, taking anything that glows to his magical sight. He nods in silent approval as Hamar removes the giants mummified head and places it on the altar.

Cast Detect Magic to make sure we don't miss anything. Hands whatever he finds to Ekuur.

Justin silently floats down the narrow shaft on the winds of his Flight spell, wrapped in his own dark thoughts. Searching the chamber below should have been the same fun as a kid being given a free all-you-can-eat-pass to a candy shoppe. But in the wake of the mummies brutal assault it was like promising a kid candy and giving his ashes.

Still, the shock is fresh, and Justin wants to keep busy. So he searches for anything the party might use, starting with anything that reveals itself to be magical to his detection charm. Then he moves to gemstones, particularly Diamonds as he knows that both Ekuur and himself have need of diamonds and diamond dust for certain spells.

female Tiefling 12th level Duskblade

Karrin says nothing as Justin and Hamar say their piece but does her best to show that she heard their worlds. They don't feel like they mean much at this point but she's thankful that her friends, new and old, are here to comfort her.

"We are not leaving you here Rhiannon," Karrin says as the other leave to explore, "I don't know where you wanted to be buried, can't say the topic ever came up, but you're not staying here amongst the dead. We'll put you somewhere nice where you can see a field, maybe where you can watch some horses. I'm sorry we never talked much about where you were from, and I don't know if you have family back home, but we'll find a place for you."

I believe Karrin knows she's from a place called Eberron, but few details beyond that. Also, not that it matters much, but I don't think Rhiannon was ever updated to a level 9 character. She should have had 108 HP I think. She'd be at negative 24. Depending no the rules, still dead, especially if you're going negitive CON but Rhiannon might have had another feat to work with, perhaps something like toughness that would have increased HP.

IDK. I think her exit was a glorious death thing. And she was fifth wheeling with Blayze in the picture. When Mark decides on her destination, I'll write a suitable closure piece.

In the tomb Hamar looks for weapons or other items that may be wearable to enhance his skills, he also looks for items that may aid his new allies.

Hamar pauses for a moment by the piles of gold and the jewels, his hand reaches out to touch them but he then pulls it back. Hamar looks at Justin, "Nothing good comes from such riches. Civilizations which murder people to gain the land as if they owned it create this sort of wealth, hoarded by the greedy while most in their cities starve. My people live with the land not on the land. These riches bring false idols and a false sense of what is most important in life. Still, if you believe you need gems for your spellcraft Wizard I will carry some for you".

When Justin casts Detect Magic the mummy's breastplate and his massive morningstar both glow. His wrappings have a faint necromantic glow to them, but Justin assumes this is residual magic from the ritual that created him.

Human Wiz 12 (Evocation)

Justin nods absentmindedly.

"Not disagreeing with you Hamar. Although I think you and I might have some very interesting discussions over a few pints in our future." Justin remarks in a low voice as he scans the pile of treasure before them.

"However, it turns out that our chosen profession is extremely costly. Healing potions, new spells, magical enchantments for equipment, yadda yadda. And this pile of wealth, possibly ill-gotten by some very-likely greedy b@$^%!d of a by-gone and long-gone age, will go a long way towards equipping us so,... that doesn't happen again." He growls as he gestures vaguely upwards towards the defeated mummy.

Justin turns towards Hamar with a small, darkly humorous smile.
"It's not like THAT guy will be needing any of this stuff anymore."

Justin snaps his fingers and points to the (hopefully now-empty) sarcophagus.
"Ooh! Speaking of, be sure to check the sarcophagus. Big tall and gruesome might have left something behind when pulled the smoke trick earlier."

Hamar turns to the sarcophagus and looks at it, "So you are saying we should take all of this gold and trade it in for more goods. Hmmm, a fair idea but I do not wish to lose sight of who I am and who I wish to be. This gold shall be for you and your friends, should you wish to make or procure something for me, I shall not object but I shall lay claim to none of it.

Hamar is strong but may not be strong enough to move that alone but I shall try".

Hamar will set his legs against the wall to aid in pushing the lid of the large crypt off. Once he has his balance right and his grip perfect he will begin to push.

Once all exploration is done, Justin carefully removes the wrappings and stores them away in a bag/pouch by themselves. (He'll get Ekuur to BLESS the bag separately to contain them if he can) Our wizard's mind is now furiously racing to figure out ways to cheat death. And he figures that 'naturally' occurring necromantic bandages might be used in the creation of a magic item that can absorb Death magic effects. ;P (Mummy-wrapped 'Death Ward' bracers or something?) :)

Justin nods again, but seems to actually see Hamar this time, as opposed to being in his own world of grief.

"Fair enough. Far as I'm concerned, your a part of our group until you or our boss says otherwise. If it's all right with you, we'll keep track of your share of any treasure,.." He indicates the pile of wealth around him, (admittedly dull in the wake of Rhiannon's passing),... "And we can use it to assist in equipping you. Anything extra you can keep to spend as you see fit. Or you can donate it to a worthy cause. I'm sure Ekuur can suggest a few places that could use a donation. His own church seems to be doing fairly well far as I can tell."

Hamar wrote:

"Whoa! Hold on! Your good with finding traps and such right? I think we should double-check this thing for booby-traps. It turned into smoke to exit the coffin before. Which means any physical and possibly magical traps are still in place. I can scan for magic to indicate any possible spell-traps if you can search for physical ones. If you need help, Well I'm no demi-god, but Karrin is pretty strong, and I can always summon something to help move the lid."

Justin moves to Hamar's side, refreshing his detection charm and looking at the coffin for anything that might indicate a magical trap.

OK, when running to work I forgot my notes. I'll have the goodies posted up tonight in the early AM. Until then I'll repost the original description Hamar saw:

The room is stuffed with goods. Chairs, tables, even a massive chariot. They are all built of costly-looking woods, and inlaid with precious metals and gemstones. In the center of all of this is a massive sarcophagus. Fully 5 meters long, it is made of gold, or at least gold plated. Two massive ruby eyes glitter from a stylized portrait/sculpture of a pale being, male, with curling ram's horns. The representation is holding an odd Morningstar-looking weapon.

There is a bowl on a table filled with gems, a crown on a stand made for a giant's brow with an absolutely massive violet gem set in it , and several amphorae filled with coins

Also

Justin's eye is drawn to a small stand in a back corner. A skull that looks to be carved from some solid violet gemstone sits on it. A transparent crystal dome encases it. Detect magic confirms both the skull and the dome are magical

The spellcraft reveals that the dome is actually some sort of stasis field bound into the crystal structure. There is some sort of odd magic to the skull, as if it were a magic jar spell receptacle. Justin gets a wistful smirk on his face, then quickly shakes his head and coughs self-consciously. He clears his throat unnecessarily.

"Well, a stasis field is probably for long-duration storage and preservation. Makes sense. Although an item like this shouldn't be prone to casual aging effects. Justin sounds as if he might be trying to convince himself what he says is true. He squints at the skull from all angles for a bit. Readies and casts a Protection from evil spell. Then glances over at the others.

"I'm going to check this out closer. I can't tell exactly what it does without a closer examination." He calls, then slowly lifts the top off off the skull and holds it as he watches it for a moment.

Bribes always welcome

As Justin lifts the crystal, the magic flares and dies. Whatever the spell was, it is broken now. At first, nothing happens, then there is a glowing yellow light that kindles in the skull's eye sockets. A voice sounds out in the room

"Oh gods below, I've been in stasis for centuries, haven't I?"

"Umm,..." Justin quickly hides the now-useless dome behind his back.

"If the state of the world above is any indication,... quite likely, yes." Justin replies, surprised at his own calm. He must really be worse off than he originally thought.

"Okay, It talks. I admit I wasn't expecting that. So,... exactly who, or what, are you?" Justin asks, his hand slowly reaching into a pocket for the diamond dust required to cast a Stoneskin spell. (Belatedly realizing that it may have been under a stasis spell for reasons besides keeping the dust off.)
