Chronicles of the Silver Rose Company
Game Master
Patrick Curtin
This campaign is my attempt to play a canonical Planescape campaign using the updated Pathfinder ruleset. The game actually predates the release of Pathfinder, but we have managed to update as we have needed.
OK, trying to get this rolling. Merle, I would allow Karrin to wake you up early, but she didn't get the Perception roll, and was only aware once Issac said something. Ekuur, there should be emough room to hit them with a fireball. Gimmie a location.
The abberant monsters move towards the party, fanning out and heading into the cave. The click clack and snap-whip sounds echo off the walls. Karrin shoots a bolt of flame at the nearest one to her N-9:
Reflex: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 = 19
The monster is quick, and manages to dodge the brunt of the blast, but not all of it. A smell like cooking seafood scents the air as the monster squeals shrilly.
The rest of the group scrambles up from their bedrolls and grabs their weapons in preparation.
"Wha?,... No,... Five more minutes Skyy,..." Justin mutters, not interested in waking up at teh noises around him. At the sound of the fire spells going off, His eyes snap open and he flails himself free of his blanket,...
Issac snaps off a bolt at one of the critters and it lodges under an armorplate on its front shoulder. Bluish ichor spurts forth, dripping down the thing's carapace.

As soon as he can, Ekuur unleashes his fireball, detonating on the first rust monster (and should catch the other two, also).

Ekuur chants a few words of sibilant Ignan and gestures at the three advancing creatures. There is a loud *WHOOMP* sound and the party is blasted by a rush of warm air and the smell of frying shrimp.
Reflxes:1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17
The monsters squeal, and advance, their carapaces smoking. One runs at Issac, perhaps angered by his attack. It doesn't get close enough to attack this round. The other two home in on Karrin. They open fanged madible crab-like mouths and attmpt to bite her:
Bethany lets out a screech and launches herself at the closest creature, skimming low to the ground and landing with a downward slash of her Sabre that unfortunately goes wide.
Fly to q16 Attack Rust Monster with Masterwork Bronzewood Sawtooth Sabre:1d20 + 8 ⇒ (4) + 8 = 12
Isaac switches to his longspear, bracing it against the ground in case the beast charges him. Readying to attack if the rust monster charges; double damage if it does.

Justin finally tosses off his annoyingly clingy covers and sits up, taking in the scene with a bleary but alert glance. He flicks his fingers, and sends a small blazing streak of light towards one of the ones attacking Karrin. It buzzes between his friends to unerringly strike one creature on the flank.
Force Missile evocation power, as MM, dmg is 1d4 + 2
Well, you guys can serve out the damage. And here I was thinking three might be a bit much, LOL
Karrin watches in horror as her shiny breastplate corrodes from the monster's touch It loses half it's HP and gains 'broken' condition. She whips Ferissirion about and chops the offending creature in twain. Her big blue axe flash freezes both pieces and they clatter to the cave floor, smoking slightly as the frost on them sublimes.
The second one near Karrin takes hits from Merle, Drazek and Justin. It flops over, twitching and melting from the various arcane energies pumped into it.
Tiandra snaps a bowshot at the final monster near Issac:
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15
1d6 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
Her arrow goes wide, as does Mr. Swire's bolt. Issac stabs at his foe, then plants his shaft in the ground, leveling it towards his antagonist.
OK, I am counting Swire's miss as his first round atk. Thus he and Naidre have a turn, then the littlest rustmonster will have a shot
Swire lets his crossbow drop to the ground and moves towards the rust monster, taking out a shiny copper piece as he goes. "Come on you little bastard, look at the shiny coin..."
Move to I26 and feint(It's Sense Motive is +1):1d20 + 10 - 8 ⇒ (12) + 10 - 8 = 14

Sense Motive:1d20 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
Swire seems to be getting its attention. It pauses, and its antennae whirl about. Blue blood drips from the wound Issac gave it.
So it gets no AC dex bonus on your next atk, right?
Naridre stands and pulls back her bow, her eyes glowing briefly as she adds a little something extra to the shot.
Expending psionic focus to add an extra 2d6 damage should I actually hit.
Attack: 1d20+6
Damage: 3d6+1
ZAP!
Nari's glowing eyes sight the confused rust monster dancing with Swire and she sends a shaft straight into one of its gluey crabeyes. The beast squeals and falls over dead.
The group is left catching their breath in the light of the bright-burning campfire.
"I don't see them being too dangerous. But then I also don't see what the fascination is with all of the metal you people carry around either." She looks at the dead creatures for a second before grabbing Drazek and pulling him back towards the warmth of the fire.
Karrin quickly pulls the armour off to examine it.
"That filthy little monster," Karrin grumbles, "I;ll need someone to cast the mending or make whole on it. It's practically worthless as is."
Indeed, Karrin's breatplate, once shiny from frequent maintenence, now looks pitted and rusty. The antenna left a long furrow in the steel, and veins of orange snake from the main gash across the metal. In some places it looks ready to crumble entirely..
"Rust monsters. Perfect. I didn't realize that they were cave dwellers, although I'm not surprised that they came out looking for a meal. The amount of metal this group is carrying must have made us look awfully appetizing." Justin yawns, blinking to clear his eyes as he leans over to examine the rust monsters remains. He finishes his examinations, (and pockets a few samples of Rust Monster antenna into an empty potion vial for further study) and walks over to where Karrin is bemoaning her poor breastplates fate. He frowns thoughtfully.
"I might as well take my watch, I'm awake now. I can replace one of my spells with a Mend for you Karrin, but I don't have a Make Whole or similar magic in my travel tome. The Mend is a minor magic, and might not repair it completely, but that and a little care should at least make it solid enough to be functional again until we can get it repaired back in Sigil." Justin offers, holding out his hand for the beleaguered breastplate.
"Let me see what I can do with it." He says with a small smile.
Justin will spend as many Mend's as it takes (the joy of unlimited cantrips!) and polish it off/oil it up with a Prestidigitation until it as good as he can make it. And he'll still be at full 1st and up lvl spells for the day! Since that was an ability I used on Rusty, and not a spell :)
"Oi, makes perfect sense, cutter. This whole burg was a mine: the toxic dross outside, the way the walls are corroded. Makes sense that these blighters would find their way in and call it kip."
He bends down to one of the corpses and looks it over.
"Terrors of Acheron, these rust monsters. They tunnel their way through those massive sodding cubes, just eating and eating 'til they stumble on some bladelings or goblins or the like...."
Isaac just sits and stares at the fallen crustacean monsters, lost in his own thoughts.
Ekuur looks down at the dead creatures, absolute horror on his face. "These things ... eat metal? They destroy it at a touch? On my home world, if they didn't starve to death first, we would hunt them mercilessly. True evil. Disgusting!"

Nari gently places a hand on his shoulder.
"Are you alright?" she asks in a near whisper.
Isaac breaks his reverie and puts a hand on Nari's.
"Yeah.. yeah, I'm fine. Just some bad memories. Haven't done any real traveling since what happened with the last band o' mercs I used to run with."

"Well, if you ever want to talk, I'm very good at listening. And I know a lot about bad memories." She smiled at him and squeezed his shoulder reassuringly.
Ekuur looks down at the dead creatures, absolute horror on his face. "These things ... eat metal? They destroy it at a touch? On my home world, if they didn't starve to death first, we would hunt them mercilessly. True evil. Disgusting!"
Justin looks up from his examinatin of the breastplate (and the work he's got ahead of him!) to look at Ekuur with a small smile.
"Yeah. I don't know much about,... 'Athas', is it? But it sounds like the godsmen won't be setting up an outpost there anytime soon. While it sounds like a natural place for a forge, there's not much to work with! I can see why you'd see the rust monsters as 'evil'." Justin holds out the breastplate for Ekuur to examine.
"Actually they DO eat metal, but not directly. If you'll notice, their touch corrodes any ferrous metal, like iron and steel, but not gold. They can age the metal decades in the space of a heartbeat. Causing it to decay and rust solid. They actually eat the rust the ferrous metal leaves behind. Put them in a gold mine and they'd starve to death!" The mage adds with a grin.

Not a lot of time to post, so a quick note: Mending fixes the 'broken' condition and will repair the HP damage to the breastplate. I am ruling that it cannot restore the breastplate to its 'pristine' condition (otherwise why have Make Whole?)
Justin works on Karrin's breastplate, muttering phrases in Draconic and tracing the ugly rust scars with his fingers. His touch seems to diminish the rusty pitting until the breastplate is finally whole. The breastplate looks solid, but his magic has left the surface lumpy and uneven, as if hasty smithwork was used to repair the armor. Still, a sight better than before. He oils it with another spell and hands it back to Karrin
Sounds good to me DM! I would even be alright with it only fixing the 'broken' condition, but still having at least a partial HP loss. Although I'm certain KArrin appreciates your interpretation better! :)
Justin gives a half-smile as he hands back the breastplate. "It's solid, even if it's not pretty. Sorry. I'm a mage, not a blacksmith!"
Justin looks up from his examinatin of the breastplate (and the work he's got ahead of him!) to look at Ekuur with a small smile.

Ekuur looks over the breastplate, still with disgust. "I never would have imagined such a creature could exist. Are these things common?"
He actually seems to shudder a bit. He seems visibly shaken, something no one in the group would have ever seen him as before. Amazingly, walking among devils, demons, and even worse on the streets of Sigil was nothing compared to the mere knowledge that rust monsters exist...

Make whole is a supped up version of mend. Basically it's a second level spell instead of a cantrip. Not a huge improvement mind you but it does have a few added features. I'm fine with the ruling but I believe that means that only Ekuur can fix the armour now.
"Thanks Justin," Karrin says taking the breastplate back, "It's far better then how it was that's for sure."
Just so I know what condition are you ruling the armour in? Is it just a normal breastplate currently or can I still use the magical stats for it?

I ruled it was repaired, but that its 'look' was off. So there are no penalties, just that the breastplate looks like it was repaired by a shoddy blacksmith. Mend works fine, just doesn't restore the item to pristine condition.

"Thanks, cutter. I'm fine, though. Ancient history. My mind tends to wander out o' my brainbox. Heh."
Isaac points to Nari's psicrystal.
"Good thing you keep an eye on yours, eh?"
"Well, I reckon I'll take a walk back and see where these blighters were comin' up from. Mayhap they left somethin' of interest."
"Maybe we should take a peek at where these beasties crept up from?" Karrin suggests as she dawns her breastplate, "you know, in case there's something else down there? Maybe we can seal it up somehow?"
Bethany looks over at Karrin from wher she's dragging Drazek. "You lot can search the tunnel if you like. Drazek and I will stay here and keep watch while you're gone."

Issac and Karrin And whoever else head to the back of the cave. The shaft is narrow-five feet wide and ten feet tall. It has a very sharp slope, and there are indications that some sort of mine cart system once was in place on the floor. The rust monsters must have eaten it long ago, as all that is left are rust stains and a few rotted ties to mark its existence.

A snatch of some language is overheard among the clicky-ckacking coming from far below.
Isaac holds up a closed fist in a 'halt' gesture.
"Listen, close.", he whispers,"More rust monsters down there. And I heard someone rattlin' their bonebox. I'll scout ahead, get the others ready."
The ranger creeps further down the minshaft.

Justin was just settling back onto his blanket and opening up his tome when Isaac hisses softly.
"Oh fer the luv of,... you have got to be kidding me! I mean, who hides out in an abandoned mine?!?" He grumbles, softly, as he tucks away his traveling spellbook and climbs back to his feet. He checks both of his swords in their sheathes, but considering what they face does not draw them. He waits in the middle of the camp-cave, not wanting to get too close to the back and make a noise to give them away.
"Isaac has gone off scouting," Karrin says to the priest (who clearly can't see in the dark), "they were probably pretty far away because I didn't even hear them . . ."
Meaning that they could be in the next room :P
Karrin makes sure the others are aware of the situation.
"I think we should set up at the mouth of the mine," Karrin says after she's roused the others, "it's a natural choke point and until we're ready to advance, it gives us the best strategic position."
