Chronicles of the Silver Rose Company

Game Master Patrick Curtin

This campaign is my attempt to play a canonical Planescape campaign using the updated Pathfinder ruleset. The game actually predates the release of Pathfinder, but we have managed to update as we have needed.

Thanks Guy/Karrin for the kind words. One of the reasons I populated the WSI with so many weird characters is that I was waiting on O.L.L.I's game (my first) to kick in, and I was new to the whole PbP concept. A more knowlegable person might have shrugged and gone to the Gamer Connection thread, but I waited with Guy in the WSI and eventually got up the nerve to start my own PbP to celebrate my love of Planescape. Having Karrin join in gave me the confidence to continue, when I was on the edge of departing these boards. So thank YOU Guy, without your (and Karrin's!) input this game would not exist...

That was my first PbP as well :D I guess we'll have to chalk it up to beginners luck for both of us then. I'm going to have to start a PbP game one of these days to return the favor.

"Sod it, why not. Talk away, cutter."

Yeah, I read along with the Inn back in my lurking days. Besides, the thread that spawned it was one of the few recruitment threads that's actually worth reading. Ah, those were the days.

Ekuur listens to Sigrid intently, asking many questions about her home plane, especially the City of Brass. He mentions how he himself is recently returned from the Plane of Fire, and even details how he was tasked directly by the Sacred Flame itself to destroy the ice-portal abomination. He doesn't go into a huge amount detail of why he was there, since he's not the type to wag his tongue and spill all of his new employer's business (and to be honest, he's still not entirely clear about what's going on since he's only been with the group a few days).

Sigrid grows interested when Ekuur mentions the Plane of Fire.

"It is unusal to meet someone who has travelled to my realm" She says

She explains she is a Janissary that is part of the household guard of the Efreeti merchant Malik Ibn Munarr. The merchant is busy in conferences, and Sigrid has curiosity about the city.

"Have you been in this place long?"

"Hey guys." Justin says to Isaac, Swire and the Godsmen as he indicates two refills to the barkeep. He nods to Ekuur, but leaves him to his conversation with the flame haired giant-kin.

"Isaac, I'd like you to meet a friend of mine. She ran into some trouble and I'm trying to help her out. But it sounds like she might need more help than just I can provide. I'd like to see what you think and your opinion on bringing it to Renkar." Justin raises an eyebrow at Swire.

"Mr. Swire, would you like to come along? You seem like the kind of person who hears more than two ears should be capable of. Maybe you can answer some her questions. If you don't mind? Next rounds on me!" He adds with a smile.

Hergik and Springhill Jak wave them off

"We'll be fine, lads, right *hic* here."

They go to Justin's table and introductions are made. Murphy gives them the same chant as she had to Justin.

She looks at Justin

"I'm not sure what you folks can do about this vampire. He was a stone-cold killer, a warlock I believe. And he had a pretty good team of lieutenants under him. I don't want to drag you into something you aren't prepared for."

It's up to you, Patrick. Isaac doesn't have a ton of long term projects in mind and he's not on any shifts at the Foundry anymore. The only thing is that I'd like to make a few weapons so Isaac is even more armed to the teeth than now. He's gotten mildly paranoid since ending up in a goblin prison camp in Acheron prior to the campaign and he wants weapons and equipment for every single possible situation. Right now it's only mild, though, and he'll want to make himself a nice guisarme to trip people with and a kukri that he can conceal and use to cut himself out of bad situations.

Well, we could always leap right into something, it just feels more organic to me to have some time off between levels. Oh, and you can get any of those things any time you want at any pricepoint. Working for the Godmen, you can even get the mass-produced weapons for like a 15% discount

Murphy gives a sour drunken laugh at this bon mot.

Murphy looks over with bloodshot blue eyes.

"I don't know anything about you cutter, but I do know my business. And my business is the unexpected. Now, if a trained squad of Harmonium ended up smeared along a mile of sewer trying to stake this deader and his crew, what makes you think you're hende enough to try it?"

Swire racks his brains, but hasn't heard anything about the vampires. Issac also comes up empty.

Male Human Rogue 6

"Well, there's your problem. You sent hardheads to do a cutter's job. Just send down a few cutters with a suitably mercenary attitude, and those poor sods'll be back in the dead book by Antipeak."

LOL. I guess so, considering she is half in the bag and spoiling for a fight ..

The small stauesque halfling's eyes narrow as she takes in Mr. Swire.

"Hardheads? Yeh gonna take that tack with ME berk?"

She swivels to Justin

"Why are you hanging with this motley crew of sellswords Justin? I always thought you were better than some money-grubbing mercenary."

She swivels back to Swire

"Berk, you best ghost. I ain't in no mood to palaver with some scrubby sellsword with no respect and a piss-poor attitude."

Swire leans down over the table, glaring at the halfling. "You wound me, darling. After all, any berk can tell a knight when they see one." He then stands up in one smooth motion and heads for the door. "You've got horrible taste in women, Case."

Karrin heads upstairs to Merle's room. She knocks politely before barging in. She sits down next to Merle and begins to gently shake her.

"Merle," She says, "Hey Merle, wake up, you still have that sleeping stuff going through your system and we let you sleep most of it off but you need to get up otherwise your sleep pattern is going to be off."

Male Half-elf (Planar) Ranger 5/Rogue 2/Plane Walker 1

Isaac sighs as Swire heads for the door.
"That went well. Nice meetin' yeh, Murphy."
With his terse farewell, he rejoins the table of Godsmen.

Human Wiz 12 (Evocation)

Justin 'just' needs a little time to scribe scrolls, and if he has enough GP, up his amulet with another enchantment. All told that would only take a couple of days, I think. In some ways, a little 'down time' would be nice, and expected, (or at least hoped for!) But if RL has taught me anything, it's that things rarely work out that well,...

Oops, forgot all about the Hardhead/Knight of the post angles, I never actually got to ask my questions, oh well! ;P

Justin blinks, looks at Swire's retreating back, and gives a halfhearted wave to Isaac as he rejoins his buddies at the bar. Then he gives a barking laugh, only noticeable in the bar because it timed perfectly with the end of the latest singers performance. Justin ignores the singer's injured look, shakes his head, and takes a drink.

"Wow. And I thought that I was up for 'Mr Sensitivity & Tact'. Now I don't know whether to nominate you, or Swire." Justin declares wryly.

"And you know darn well, drunk or sober, that I'm no 'money grubbing mercenary'. Unless by 'money-grubbing' you mean 'late with the rent and at risk of being evicted', then yeah, that's me." Justin says sourly, just a wee bit sharper and harsher than he'd intended to. "All our particular values, most of which we share, if disagree on the little details, will keep us warm in the Hive at night if we lose our shack."

Justin looks sourly at the stage for a bit, then sighs heavily. "Aw, Hades Murph. We're all just tired, cranky and glad to be alive. What with staring our night with the Xoasmen & Deadites, and ending with a lovely jog through the plane of fire, I'm just happy to see your cute face again!" He whispers vehemently. Then his eyes widen and he closes them with a sigh.

"And, I have officially had too many." He says softly, knowing that Murphy will know that he means he has said too much, and will happily blame it on the drinks. "Um,... Ix-Nay on the Eadite-Day around town, alright? We've, kinda, made up for the trouble, but I think we're still on the 'don't ask, don't tell, don't get added to the book' phase of our making-up session, you dig?" He adds, managing to actually look, if not embarrassed, at least sheepish about the incident.

"We need to re-coup from our,... last assignment. I'll ask around, see what I can find out about your men. It's the least I can do. AND I'm supposed to be good at that sort of thing." He adds with a smirk.

Like Justin, Ekuur would need a few days to pen a few scrolls, and he does want to return to the front of that temple to the ice-god and deliver his sermon. He would eventually like to start his own following to the Sacred Flame; while he doesn't mind the Kossuth-worshippers, following a specific Power is just foreign to him.

Ekuur chuckles a little, taking another drink from his mug. "No, not very long, in fact. Perhaps six months. I come from a world known as Athas. You would probably like it, in fact. It is a huge, dry, hot sea of silt that surrounds several city-states. The city states (except the one I come from) are all ruled by sorcerer kings, who are worshipped as gods by some of the populace." Ekuur will go on for just a few moments to describe a bit more, including how there are no gods (except the god-wannabe sorcerer kings), the 'enlightened' such as himself follow the elemental forces, and how the races are so different.

He then mentions, a little happier and more open than normal due to the stout, "Although I admit I am no expert on this city, I can show you some of the interesting points, if you like. Unless my employer has a new job for us, I believe we shall have a little time on our hands (depending of course ... :-)). And also, if you are interested, in about two days' time, I will be delivering my first sermon on the Sacred Flame. I have no temple, but I hope to change that soon." Ekuur smiles at that, and while some might think it a happy smile, there's also a little bit of a predatory gleam as he thinks of the ice priest ...

With his terse farewell, he rejoins the table of Godsmen.

The Godsmen make room for him as a scantily-clad aasimar lass with some vivid tattoos tries to strum a guitar and belt out an old Xaos tune called The Inside-Out Song.

"Out Inside I am,
Green as silly ham,
Thinking never straight,
Up end always late..."

No one ever accused the Xaosmen of being good songwriters. At least the girl's shapely curves, purple-and-green tattoos and red mohawk liven up the scenery.

Hergik leans into Issac

"I've been meaning to have a wigwag with yeh Issac. Care to take a walk to the jakes?"

Assuming that's OK

Out back of Caritas is a small building with several stoppered holes arrainged around its walls. Hergik plucks a stopper out of one and begins to drain the night's ale away

"Chant on the floor is yeh made points with Ombidias and Ambar today. Yer becoming a Namer Of Interest, as they like to say."

He finishes up and restoppers the hole

"Yeh know I'm angling for factotum. When the time comes, I'd like to have yer support. Can I use yeh as a reference?"

But the thing is I should never have talked you guys into trying to track down the Shadownave, I mean Swire and Isaac could handle that sort of thing but the rest of us are too green. There's no way someone as raw as you should have been left alone, quite frankly you're lucky they didn't strip you or something, because I'm sure you're wearing more valuable items then what they asked for.

I intend to fix that over the next few weeks. I'll make sure you and Nari are in tip top shape before our next job. I'll make you into top shelf mercs if it kills one of us to do it!"

"Hey Nari," Karrin calls when she spots her, "me and Merle are heading over to the Silver Rose, gonna get some work in, are you coming? I know you've been sort of bothered by what happened but nothing helps out more then getting a good work out in.

"Train your body to improve your mind," Karrin says, obviously trying to do a impression of someone, "or something like that. Anyways I don't know if you believe in that sort of thing but it sure does help from my point of view."

"Sure thing" Merle replies beginning to get changed. Once she is out of the room Merle begins to plan the best way to get back at Karrin. Going through her pack she finds the scroll of hideous laughter and promptly tucks it into her belt.

Nari sighed.

"I'll be right there," she said reluctantly, placing a bookmark in the Tout's Guide. She would have to finish reading it later. And getting a glimpse of Merle's face only cemented in her mind the need for those two to have a referee. She followed them over to the Silver Rose looking like she was heading for a particularly unpleasant punishment.

The Copper Cauldron is beginning to empty of its dinner crowd as the three head over to theSilver Rose. Renkar lets them in when they knock, and smiles as they ask to do some sparring.

"By all means ladies. I will upstairs in my study should you need me."

"Great Nari," Karrin says, a wide smile planted on her face, "you won't regret this trust me. When you know how to handle yourself you'll feel more confident and you'll be less nervous of others."

Karrin leads the others over to the Silver Rose.

"Alright Merle," Karrin says, "you want to call the first activity? Lay it on me."

"Oh it's very simple you just stand here." Merle points to the middle of the room "and let me cast a few spells on you don't worry none of the lethal stuff you know mostly to help with my aim"

"I have a bad feeling about this," she muttered under her breath.

The bartender sets Justin up with his usual. He could walk to the Fallen Angel, the trek wasn't so bad from here, but the most direct route did require crossing the Grey District. During Antipeak. Considering their ambivalent status with the Dustmen, perhaps strolling under the Mortuary's shadow wasn't such a wise idea...

"Um,... Naw, mebbe later. Don't wanna seem possessive,..." Justin murmurs (mostly) to himself as he accepts his newest mug.He drains a healthy swallow, then turns to look around the bar once more.

"You know, either their getting better, or I'm getting drunker, because this one isn't half bad!" Justin comments sideways to his companions as he listens to the most recent singer on the small stage. He takes another drink and taps his boot in time to the beat.

Isaac perks an ear to the stage and shrugs.

"My jink's on 'drunker'. Mebbe it's a taste thing, though. Never liked these Xaosman screeds 'n Dustmen dirges."
Realizing that he's the Cager on duty with his Silver Rose companions now that Swire is gone, Isaac eases up the pace on his bub. "Reckon I'll have to play tout again before next Peak.", he thinks.
"So, Justin, now that we're on our way to bein' top-shelf bloods what d'ye think ye'll spend yer mountains o' jink on? I tumble to gettin' me a shirt with buttons. Think I'll look disintinguished with a fancy pipe? Mebbe yeh gotta be a spellslinger to smoke them, though..."

Merle looks up from the scroll and looks more than a little annoyed when she realises the spell hasn't worked. "Wonderful Karrin" Merle replies through gritted teeth "lets try this one on for size" she begins to cast a spell casting grease at Karrins feet
