Chronicles of the Silver Rose Company

Game Master Patrick Curtin

This campaign is my attempt to play a canonical Planescape campaign using the updated Pathfinder ruleset. The game actually predates the release of Pathfinder, but we have managed to update as we have needed.

Isaac responds with a mock-wounded expression.

"Soooooo tired," Karrin moans, "sooooo hungry."

Karrin watches as they divide up the treasure but doesn't insert herself into the discussion.

Drazek helps himself to some food, replenishing his energy. From time to time tossing Bethany a knowing glance.

"Anyway, once we figure what this stuff all does we see who can use it best, shooter, fighter or caster."

Nari silently walks past the others as she enters the tavern heading for the stairs without saying a word. She looks pale, but then she almost always does. She heads up to her room and locks the door behind her before curling up on her bed for a long cry.

"I can shoot, fight and cast," Karrin can't help but note, "I'm also able to leap tall buildings with a single bound."

Well she can now thanks to the swift fly spell

The two gems are large and valuable looking the red one is a ruby, the other, a black sapphire. The dagger is a mean-looking piece, inlaid with death symbols with a silver skull pommel set with small red gem eyes, likely garnets from the look of them.

Ramona returns with platters of breakfast-style food, including vegetables for those not inclined to eat meat. A platter of fried Elven steak squash with a pile of hash browns makes the rounds.

As the group eats, Renkar comes into the tavern's common room.

"Ah, good Peak to you all," He says cheerily. He sits down and then murmurs in a low voice

"I assume there is a good reason for the corpse in our exercise room? Also, I hear whispers of a massive Xaositect riot in the Hive. Anything you were involved in?"

He leans back a bit and snags a scone

"I have that prisoner you left with me, Meldric, still under wraps. "

Seph meanwhile pads quietly upstairs after Nari. Bumping into her locked door he begins to meow and paw at it.

I'll need a roll for each item Merle. I'm going to use this roll on the dagger that Swire plunked down:

The dagger that Mr. Swore produced pulses with evil energy. It is a bane to all good creatures

It is a +1 Unholy dagger

Isaac explains things around mouth fulls of squash, pastry, potatoes and tea.

"Ah... you met Brandal. He was the late Toranna's "special friend" and knew the dark o' what was happenin' with the barmies they was brainsnatchin'. We figure a priest or a necromancer could wring some darks out o' him 'fore he comes back as a tapeworm or whatever in his next incarnation. We can prolly let Meldric off the hook, now."

"We may have had something to do with those Chaosmen. But they was already lanned to the chant on the barmies goin' missing... we just gave 'em some corroboratin' evidence and slipped into the Mortuary. A little cloak an' dagger, a trip through a portal..."
The half-elf makes circular motions with his knife and fork. He reaches into his pack and pulls out the faux-Grecian head.
"... we wind up in a secret fortress on the Plane of Fire. Turns out the barmies and spivs Shadowknave was pennin' in the deadbook and sendin' off to Toranna weren't penned in the deadbook: they was just bein' brainwashed into thinkin' they was. Then a fake Baator and Mt. Olympus convinces these barmies they was bein' sent back to spy on the factions for the Illuminated. I'm hopin' our mate Brandal can fill in some o' them holes, tell us about this Shadowknave and then we can try to convince Eliath he never really died and our client walks away grinnin' like a Chaosman with a monkey bite."

Female catfolk sorceror 11

Now that I think about it couldn't Merle just take 20 for each items spellcraft check Would give her a total of 26 each time?

The group fills Renkar in with what details they gleaned during their hectic night's journey Including Eliath's location in the Cage, I am Assuming :P. Renkar grows grave, then excited by what they have found.

"This is quite the coup! A secretive organization planting spies in the factions? If we can get this Brandal to spill names and places we should be able to make quite a few friends."

He finishes his scone and tea and gets up from the table.

"Good work folks, I am going to track down someone who can assist us with contacting Brandal. Get some rest, and let's say we meet at the Silver Rose two hours Afterpeak?"

After ascertaining that this is acceptable, Renkar heads out into the grey Before Peak drizzle.

Karrin nods off a few times during the discussion. She seems to tired to lick her empty plates clean. The jam and syrup (which would likewise have been licked clean) remains doted about her face and mouth. The condiments dot her face like blood on a lion after a feeding frenzy . . . a frenzy that began the moment brave Ramona placed the food in front of the very hungry Karrin.

With one need filled Karrin clearly struggles to fight off the sleep. Karrin's full belly doesn't help. Karrin's head leans backwards and then suddenly jerks forward as Karrin eyes open wide and she seems to search for something interesting to keep her engaged in the conversation but moments later her head tilts backwards again. After a few false starts Karrin's head tilts back a final time and it soon Karrin begins snoring in her seat.

Seph sits next to Nari for a minute at first trying to talk to her and calm her down but all that comes out are random meows and mews. realising that there is no way for Nari to understand him he instead resorts to patting her on the back.

Isaac gingerly reaches over the table with a napkin and wipes stray bits of jam, syrup and food from Karrin's chin.
"... been buggin' me a few minutes. I seen dogs that eat tidier..."
Having at least not gotten punched out of reflex by the dozing tiefling, Isaac settles back in his seat.

"Aye, Swire, the snickersnack's yours; reckon it'd be hazardous to my health if I took it, anyhow. Tumble to me takin' the greatsword? A bit heavier than my usual cutlery, but I could still pen a basher in the deadbook with it, couldn't I just."

Oh snap I had forgotten that lil' gem! It is a Gem of Smithing: gives Fire Resistance 10 and allows anyone using it to make a Craft(Smith)checks as a class skill with 5 ranks in it

Ekuur has been pretty quiet through the whole discussion. Despite the success of the mission, despite his success in following the directives of his faith, he feels as if he has been cast out of his home for the second time now. A strange, empty feeling sits in his stomach. And that's even after he has eaten an amount of food to rival Karrin. When the subject of Brindal comes up, Ekuur does mention, "I believe I could question him myself, now. I think my knowledge of my faith has improved to the point now that I can query the dead."

It's an interesting question and I've been pondering it. He's intelligent and so obviously has the ability to use use activated items so honestly I don't see why not.

Kudos to you for an ingenious use of the item. :)

Bethany has followed the others in their journey through the portal and has been silent up until their return to the Copper Cauldron.
She has some of the stew, picking out most of the vegetables and devouring the meat voraciously. She does however notice Drazek eyeing her with a grin and returns what can only be described as a predatory gaze.
Once the items are dumped on the table, her interest is piqued and she moves her chair in to join in the discussion.

Item Dissemination:

+1 Unholy dagger Mr Swire
+1 Frost Greatsword Isaac
Earrings of Minor Fire Resistance (FR 10) Bethany
Ring of Protection +1
Ring of Force Shield
+1 dagger
Robe of Blending Merle/Seph
Scroll of Enlarge Person Merle or Justin
Scroll of Resist Energy: Fire Merle or Justin
Scroll of Blur Bethany
Scroll of Flaming Sphere Merle or Justin

Actually, after reading the spell, it may be better to try someone else. You only get one question per two levels, meaning we'd get two from Ekuur, and only one casting works on a corpse per week.

Nari tries to respond, but she's been crying so hard that she starts hiccuping instead. The answer to the question is obvious from her tear covered face, though.

Human Wiz 12 (Evocation)

Catching up! DOn't forget the Sword that Justin took from Toranna, AND I believe I saw that the dead guy we brought back had a sword/dagger as well? Perhaps matching Toranna's?

----------------------
Justin dives through the portal, happy to see the flickering flames of the Plane past his boots. He lands nowhere near as gracefully as Mr. Swire, nor quite as ungracefully as Drazek, but makes it nonetheless. He stands panting, his flame-blade spell sputtering it's last in the Antipeak drizzle. He looks almost as bedraggled as Merle and Seph in the muddy rain, but fixes the group of (former) guards with a look as he casually waves his sword their way, still steaming in the flickering light from the portal before it closes.

"Not tonight lads, It's late, I'm tired, and I'm cranky. Catch me later." He almost collapses in relief as they turn and leave. He waves with a raised eyebrow at Ishmael as he saunters off. "Nice guy. I like the coat." He quips with a hint of his usual energy. He follows the others, barely able to pay attention to which way they take, or summon the energy to care.

----------------------------------------

Justin sits and eats (almost) as much as Karrin. As he eats a little slower, he makes a (little) less of a mess. He mutters to himself as he 'discusses' certain scrolls with Merle, and outright argues about her interpretation of certain auras,.... Assisting Merle, since she's already made all the checks, Taking 10 guarantees that I'll be able to boost her checks by at least 2, yes? DOn't forget Toranna's sword!

Justin smirks at Isaac's and Swire's banter, but seeing as he only understands about half the cant their using, he settles for shoveling more food into his mouth in lieu of participating in it.

"Merle, if you'll let me have these scrolls" don't forget, we have some that we were carrying/using before we got that last batch! Justin says, indicating a pile of scrolls that includes one each of the scroll/spells that they discovered on this trip. "I can scribe these into my spellbook. Then I can easily scribe as many as we need. All I need is time and materials! We can split the rest."

"Wait, you want to do WHAT with the robe?!?"
I haven't read that Item description, but if I understand right, Good thinking! I luv clever uses for items! ;)

May I place a call for the ring of Force Shield? And one of the longswords if they are magical as well?

Seph climbs into the robe and immediately starts transforming before Merle's and Nari's eyes. Where a small cat once was, a slender white-furred catfolk child now sits, blinking owlishly. He is dressed in the samite robe, which has conformed around his slim form magically. The child's fur is patterned with black stripes, and he looks to be on the cusp of adolescence, still kitten-like in many ways.

male Catfolk

Seph blinks a few times feeling very dizzy and different somehow Looking up at Nari and Merle and noticing Nari's tears he opens his mouth and speaks for the first time in years "Nari.......Please don't cry"

Female catfolk sorceror 11

Merle stands flabbergasted. Part of her mind was saying this wasn't right at all Seph should look about her age not some little child the other part couldent care less. She trys to say something but only seems to manage to look like a gold fish with her mouth opening and closing. Unable to find the words she just rushes forward and hugs him

OK, I know that there are a few RPing things going on, but I want to advance the story a bit. Keep on, and we can run this and link everything together at the end.

After a quick and dirty discussion of the loot I am going to assume you get a good appraisal on the black sapphire, call it 5K GP the group heads to their rooms for a quick nap. Karrin is shaken awake gently and led up to collapse, still dressed, on her bed.

Karrin:

Spoiler:
As Karrin drifts into dreamland, she finds herself in the herbarium Brother Cadfael used to keep at the monastery. The scents of drying marjoram and hyssop mingle with rosemary and lemon balm. Neat racks of clay jugs hold dozens of rare spices, and the rafters are crowded with hanging garlands of drying herbs.

Karrin looks about in nostalgic wonder, when a shimmering form walks into view. The form is hazy and translucent, as if viewed from a distance. It shifts and shimmers, looking for all like a slice of a snowstorm given human form. White motes swirl in random patterns along the slim figure.

You did well at the Citadel, though I was constrained in that place, The figure whispers to Karrin You grow in experience and strength, and you take more steps down your destined path. I will protect you as best I can, but you must be wary of the agents of the Pit. They will seek to twist you off the path of righteousness. Stay strong and true, and I will always be there for you.

The figure brushes Karrin's cheek with its fingers and she feels a feeling like the shock of diving in a pond on a hot summer's day.

'Ware the agents of the Pit The figure says again, slowly disappearing among the racks of stored herbs.

Karrin slowly drifts into more unorganized dreaming at this point...

Justin:

Spoiler:
Taking a breather from the massive meal, Justin decides he should go check on his kip and Skyy. He strides through the grey Before Peak gloaming to Flourish Alley. It looks like Maxus Korkalian has gotten the window fixed at the Magic Vat, the clean glass standing out from the dirtiness of the rest of the building. Justin grins and heads to his basement kip.

Fortunately there is no sign of his landlady, Fernicia, though rent shouldn't be a problem now! He opens his door quietly, and heads to his bed.

Skyy is laid out, still awake, reading one of the cheap Greeny dreadfuls that Justin had picked up from a bookstall in his travels. She sits up, showing a generous expanse of blue-tinged flesh. She has grabbed a hold of one of Justin's shirts, and is using it as a nightgown. It looks very nice in her.

"Well, an' I thought I kept long hours!" She drawls, sitting up "I got home hours ago!"

Although her tone is faintly scolding, there is no heat in it. She glances over at Justin with wide blue-silver eyes and smiles

"So are you too tired from your gadaboutting to stay up with me?"

Anyone else: Anything you want to do other than nap let me know. Otherwise I'll advance the story to the meeting in the Afterpeak.

Ah yes, Justin did grab that sword from Toranna. It is a pair to the dagger, a +1 Unholy longsword. Brandal's cutlery is masterwork dagger, and a +1 Longsword (garden variety). I had them color coded, so if you remember the coloring, that would be awesome :)

Male Half-elf (Planar) Ranger 5/Rogue 2/Plane Walker 1

Beyond doing a double take at the second catperson in Nari's room and putting two and two together to figure out what happened, he'll just head to his room.

Isaac will probably just spend his time carefully mending his armor, polishing and sharpening all of his weapons (probably not the mace, though....), oiling his bow and changing out the bowstring, checking the fletchings on his arrows, etc. Learning how to forge weapons and spending time hipped in Acheron have left him a little neurotic about making sure his gear is perfectly cared for.

I don't know if the Gem of Smithing would stack with Isaac's existing ranks in Craft (Weaponsmith), otherwise I'd take it unless someone wanted to just have it for fire resistance. I did just take a pretty serious magic weapon, so it's not like Isaac hasn't taken his share.

Male Human (Athasian) Cleric 10

Before everyone in the common room heads off, Ekuur does speak to everyone present. "I thank you all for helping me in the directives given by the Sacred Flame. You had no reason to continue on after the first fight, other than to chase after me. Know I am in your debt, and you have found a loyal friend."

After eating, he will retire to his room for sleep; he feels drained and depressed being back in the gray of Sigil.
