Chronicles of the Silver Rose Company

Game Master Patrick Curtin

This campaign is my attempt to play a canonical Planescape campaign using the updated Pathfinder ruleset. The game actually predates the release of Pathfinder, but we have managed to update as we have needed.

That's a good question, I'd imagine it would depend on your players.

My old college group was pretty much up for anything. We once played a Fantasy Hero game, which we ran pretty much as a D&D game but with the Hero System rules. We had to go trough a lot of gazeteer type info to get into the setting, but as it was pretty much just another Fantasy world we had no problem at all. And exploring the new world was fun.

Compared to the same group when I really wanted to play an Al'Quadim campaign. The setting was so specific and flavor intensive that we never got it off the ground. I do not know if it was just because of RL timing and issues, or they just weren't into it as much as me and so didn't care to do the reading. ;P

My 2cp? If it's a new(er) group of players, let them play the different/exotic PC's, but drop them into Sigil at 1st lvl and let them discover & explore it. That way they (hopefully) won't feel overwhelmed with new info, or feel like they have to study for a test before playing in the new world. :)

Good luck, and have fun! :D

EDIT- What Pat said! ;P

I have to agree that it really depends on the group but a fish out of water adventure is usually a lot of fun for even those folks that know the setting. I've learned quite a lot about planescape since I started this campaign, I could probably make a "blood" that was "Well-lanned" now, but I think if I had the choice I'd make another character similar to Karrin. The planescape is a very strange and wonderful place, full of horrors and wonders, and making a character that's already used to these things takes away a bit of the fun IMO. Then again having a nice mix of experienced and inexperienced players might be even better. When Patrick started the campaign we were about a 50/50 mix of people that were familiar with the setting and those who weren't, the group has always had a mix of characters that were "blood" and those who weren't, and I think that's been a great dynamic.

Karrin, for example, has slowly been learning the chant as the game's advanced. She still mixes Burt for Berk, but she calls people cutter from time to time, and almost never calls Sigil anything but "The Cage" these days. Karrin likes playing naive though, she often plays people unknowingly, and so Karrin likely knows more of the chant these she's letting on.

Soon we'll see if Karrin and Ekuur's little game of bad cop/worse cop + angry mob pays off. The only other question (other then will it work) is who is the bad cop and who is the worse cop? Seems to me we already had a go at bad cop/worse cop in Patrick's game already but this new angry mob variant is new and interesting twist.

Sorry about the partial absence, currently in the midst of my final Capstone class for my Communications degree. Will get caught up.

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

No problem Mark. RL takes precedence as always. I have been very laggard recently becasue of RL as well.

Guy: It will be interesting indeed! =D

Hmmm, seems like Ekuur is going for bad cop. Extortion is totally a bad cop move.

Heh, Extort the extorter!

I'm OK with that actually,... ;P

Reprint from last page,... :)

Any requests/suggestions for what Justin needs to pick up?
Prot/evil scrolls/wand?
Invis 10'?

<Sigh> sometimes it's tough trying to play a brilliant wizard when you feel less than brilliant yourself,... ;P

EDIT- I think if we need Prot /evil Ekuur and I can cover that, I know we had discussed what we might need earlier, but I can't find the page. ;P

From my understanding, we're just casing the joint tonight and going in later. Not sure how much longer the day will go, but Isaac has a plan for going in without expending a ton of magical resources.

Oh, Ok, I might have misunderstood (Won't be the last time) ;P
But I thought that our client was getting impatient, and the plan was to case, and to infiltrate if possible.

Ekuur really wouldn't look at it as extortion, actually. The man DID defile his temple with his presence, and to Ekuur, that does require some sort of penance or reparations. To him, blood or money would serve; he also understands that while blood would be satisfying, he could do a lot more for his temple and followers with money.

And besides, while he certainly leans closer to the good side, he IS CN ...

Despite what Karrin is currently saying she'd rather do things this way. She was more intent on beating him up because Ekuur seemed pretty much intent on killing the dude earlier. Currently Karrin is playing the worse cop role but with luck this Pulgh guy will pay cash . . . it does seem like a fitting punishment. Karrin will insist on giving some of the money to the various temples Pulgh has robbed though.

This is great guys. Where's the popcorn?

:)

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

Folks, just wanted to drop a line and apologize. For a number of different reasons I ave let updating kinda get past me. I will endeavor to pick up the pieces as I can. Please bear with.

DM

No worries here Pat. I think we can all sympathize. I just hope things are going well. :)

AND I think we (in both your games that I'm in) have proven that it has always been worth the wait! :)

Have a good weekend! :D

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

Thanks man, that means a lot.

Anytime pal. Anytime. :)

And now, I'm off to jump on the trampoline with MY little monkey!

Errr,... 9yr old son,... :)

Life happens, DMs get writer's block, I have faith you'll come back when you're ready. I think the biggest problem you have right now is that we're split the party so it means three times the work. No big deal at a normal table top but with a PBP game you're doing three times the work and not seeming to get anywhere!

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

Heads up: I am starting to crawl out from under my pile of problems. I will be resuming PbP play tomorrow, after I tie up a few loose ends. Thanks for y'alls patience.

YAY! MONKEY'S BACK!

Er, um, I mean,...

'Welcome back Pat' :)

Hope all is well. ANd I'm glad you enjoyed your Con! :)

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

I did. Always fun to run a zombieapocalypse scenarion

FYI: If anyone ever gets a chance, play the board game Zombicide. It is a really great game and lots of fun!

Good to know.
I haven't played that one, although I have played the "Zombie!" game, with a couple of optional expansions. :)

Sovereign Court

Male hu-man Paladin

Glad you're back Pat :)
I was just chatting with someone last week who was excited that her PbP made it to 1000 posts . . . I was like: Pa-leeeeze, my boy Pat and I probably have that just between the two of us in our one PbP :D

Then I explained that our game's been going for like five years :P
Her jaw probably hit the floor after that.

In fact the game will be five this March I think.

Post when you're ready, I'll be here.

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

Thanks Guy. And you are right, this game will be five next month, believe it or not. I still can't quite believe it myself.

Thanks everyone for putting up with my whackyness, my scheduling problems, droughts of ideas, etc. etc. over the past half-decade!

Are you kidding?

The 'scheduling problems' and 'drought of ideas' pretty much sums up my life. ;P

And the whackyness is what keeps us all coming back! :D

I'm just grateful that you (all) let me be a part of this! Thanks!

And rock on monkey-dude, rock on,... ;)

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

I got socked with a few more things that cropped up in real life. I am now shooting for Thursday as a restart date. Again apologies for my absence.

Story of RL,

Mine anyway,... ;P

Good luck, See you soon! :)

Well, it's that time again. I'm going to be traveling to Italy on business on Saturday and I'll be back the following Saturday. I actually may have some internet access this time, so I will try and keep up-to-date. If I go too slow, though, please feel free to DMPC me as needed.

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

Thanks for the heads up Bryan. I'm actually picking at several PbPs right now, so hopefully I will have fresh news by tonight

Wow!
Back with a vengeance!
:)

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

Again folks, I am sorry if my pacing has been slowish. Lots of real life issues cropping up as they do. I think (hopefully) that I will be able to sit down and do some serious updating tomorrow.

Male(s) 27 Ducks in a James suit Duck 27/ Expert 5

No problem; I haven't really had a chance to sit down and post too much lately either.

Ditto, I keep trying catch up on posts, and keep getting hammered.

Is it selfish to want to take a vacation from my life? ;P

BTW, I'm busy with work and prepping wife for upcoming surgery. I'll stay on top as best I can. Please forgive if I vanish for a day or two.
;P

Thanks,

Female awww, but that would be telling unknown

Oh, holy crap. I missed a bunch of posts...I got a bit distracted by other stuff and totally missed that. Sorry about that. Hopefully nobody was waiting on Nari for anything.

Rags, good luck with your wife's surgery.

Thanks Lynora.
It shouldn't be anything to worry about (God willing) just something that has to happen. I figure she already survived having her Thyroid removed, this should be a piece of cake. :)

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

I think Nari is fine Lynora. It seems like everyone is kind of distracted in 2013.

Rags-Best of luck and positive waves for your wife. We're here when you are ready

Female awww, but that would be telling unknown

Yeah, RL and all that. Gets us all.

And when I do have a minute for Paizoing I usually spend it on the games I run instead of the ones I play in. You can always give me a holler in fawtl if I'm ever holding things up. :)

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

OK. It looks like for the forseeable future I will be doing largish updates on Friday evening and some on Saturday. I wish I could keep up a daily posting level, but the battles are time intensive. If we are doing more talking then fighting I will be able to update sooner. Thanks folks for your forebearance.

That works.

And thanks for the wishes. I'm sure she'll be fine, (but I'll take all the good luck/wishes/prayers/Karma we can get!) ;P

RPG Superstar 2009 Top 16

Wow yeah, been in th same boat then saw the daunting post number.

Just FYI,
I don't think I've ever enjoyed NOT posting so much! :)
(The fight, I mean)

Keep it up guys, I'm enjoying this. :)

And reminder, Wife goes into surgery Thursday (We still don't have an actual TIME yet,... grrr) So again, apologies if I vanish for a couple of days.

Sovereign Court

Male hu-man Paladin

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you and your wife Ragadolf. Figuratively of course. Four days is a long time to keep your fingers crossed.

Dark Archive

male human

Same here. Hope everything goes well, Ragadolf!

Lol!
Yes, yes it is. :)

Thanks all,
I'm pretty sure it'll be just fine. (But I accept all well-wishes, prayers, etc anyway!) ;P

Right now I'm actually more stressed about how I'm going to keep everything together during her two week recovery. I have no idea how I'm going to take care of her, be at my job, and get the kids to all their activities. :/

Well, IF the worst that happens is that one of the kids has to miss an activity, I'll be a happy hubby! :)

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

Positive waves Rags. Don't worry about being absent, I'm sure we have a bunch of fightin left

Fight on!

Er, sorry, must be the actor-combatant in me,
I meant 'RIGHT on!' ;P

;)

Update,

Mrs Ragadolf is home now, sans 1 kidney. She will be fine, (and is already walking around, like the doctor told her too) she'll need 2-3 weeks healing and all will be well.

Thank you all for the well-wishes, they were and are appreciated.

I, On the other hand, am about 1 thread short of snapping right now, ;P
RL continues to kick my heinie. I'll keep up as best I can, but ask forgiveness in advance if I simply do not post for a couple of days.
;/

DO NOT STICK FINGERS IN CAGE

As I said over in the opal discussion, good to hear everything is well with the missus Rags!

To everyone: I do apologize that my posting has slowed. It is a combination of several vectors in my life. I do hope to keep the threads alive, I just am scrambling for time and I seem to be fighting in every PbP I am involved in, LOL

Please bear with and I am going to see about getting some things squared away tomorrow.

Sovereign Court

Male hu-man Paladin

As I've said before you've got no reason to apologize, this game has probably gone on longer then any other PbP on these forums. Heck as of this post our discussion thread has reached 2000 posts, that's more posts then the average PbP gets in it's entire run, and this is just our discussion thread!

Real life always comes first, and although I really enjoy this game and do wish it would update more often, I'm more concerned with the people running the game as their well being is the foundation of the game.

So while I don't get as many updates as I'd like I am happy to hear Rag's wife is fine and that sort of thing is more important then updates.

I've been thinking though, perhaps we might try a simultaneous run? Make the assumption that Karrin and Ekuur are successful and RP a bit of what happens afterwards? Some folks really haven't had much to do in the game thread for what feels like forever and just getting our PCs together to talk might help pass the time while waiting for an official monkey report!
