Chronicles of Biston

Game Master garabbott

The year is 4700. The village of Biston has suffered much in the past, and survived, but now there are many powerful forces coming down on this place, and somebody needs to rise against them.

Male Wandering Nomad 3

This is the discussion thread!

Whee! Thanks for letting me play. I think Jannet will be fun to try to get my head around. :)

Since we don't have the alchemist, I was thinking of swapping out the fortune hex for the cauldron hex and tweaking skills accordingly to include alchemy. Does that sound like a good plan? Since you said there will be interludes for things like crafting, I thought it might make sense. But the fortune hex might be more immediately useful.

Also always happy to get any tips for which spells she should have available. It looks like she's going to be at least one primary source of healing, so I figure I'll take Cure Light Wounds along with the healing hex, and I'd better take some offensive spells, but I'm flexible.

Thank you very much for choosing me!

I think Calon and Jannet would have sort of a "friendly rivalry" going on, with Calon coming along and setting himself up as a spellcaster-for-hire just as Jannet is trying to prove herself as the new town healer.

Forgive me if I'm missing something, Saxikath, but it looks like your attributes only add up to 13 instead of 15?

You're right! I think I was playing with options and lost track of the math. Thanks!

And I like the friendly rivalry idea.

Hello everyone! I am the resident barbarian. I will post again soon with my final build. Right now I am off to watch Doctor Who with my fiancé.

I should have everything squared away by tomorrow (I am in central time).

Checking in. I think my character is ready to go.

Male Wandering Nomad 3

Welcome and congratulations, everyone! I won't be active today as I just started working on a new farm and the internet is a bit wonky out here, but tonight I'll update you with a bit more information on how I want this thing to kick off!

Glad to have you all here.

EDIT: @Saxikath: Cauldron sounds good to me, but it's your character and there's always time to develop her as we level up, too.

Female Human Witch/1

Well, cauldron was actually my first choice, but when I saw the alchemist submission, I figured we didn't need two. :)

Does undead make sense for my favored enemy? I know it makes sense for my background, but I'd hate to have it there, and never run into any undead.

Male Wandering Nomad 3

@Garris: Undead makes sense, especially with Ashwood Forest's notorious inhabitants. I'm going to flesh out a bit more the Knights of the Sword and Sickle -- I think they'll be something of a local myth that's rarely seen but does its part in keeping the forest's forces of evil at bay. And as for Garris's involvement, you've likely only met a handful of the rangers that have been giving you pointers and teaching you about their organization bit by bit. If you want to have any say in how you met them, feel free to discuss it with me!

That's how I felt about it when I decided to choose undead. The other logical choice would have been lycanthrope, but I think I'll hold that for the second favored enemy, unless of course we move on to another place where they would not be found.

As far as meeting the rangers, my thought is that he wandered too deep into the forest on a hunting trip, and found himself being stalked by a group of werewolves. Lucky for him, they were being stalked by the Knights, and they struck just in time. Unfortunately, saving Garris prevented them from finding this particular group of werewolve's lair, which was the Knights' goal.

I have finalized Rouqas.

Looking forward to the first gameplay post.

Should we figure out if/how our characters know each other, or does our illustrious GM already have plans for that?

Also, does having vital statistics at the top of the post help?

Female Human Witch/1

Well, Garris and Jannet are the same age and both born and bred in Biston (say that five times fast!), so they've probably at least tangentially known each other all their lives.

I like the "friendly rivalry" thing with Calon.

I don't know if or how Jannet would know Rouqas, though. But it's a small enough town that she could easily have encountered him while going to the blacksmith to get various things repaired, or something like that.

I would agree that Garris and Jannet would know each other. I would suspect that Garris has run into Rougas at least a few times, as he would have need of the blacksmith on occasion. Calon, being an elf and a stranger in town would attract enough attention that he would at least be aware of his presence.

M Elf Wizard (Transmuter)(Perception: +7, Init: +4, AC: 14, touch: 14, FF: 10, CMD: 14, HP: 7/7, F: +0 R: +4 W: +3, TK Fist: 6/6)

Not to mention the fact that Calon has offered a [small] reward to anyone that can lead him to or bring him unusual creatures that he has not seen before. It would seem that Garris or Rouqas would be the perfect ones to take advantage of that.

I would say that Rouqas definitely has assisted in locating various creatures for Calon from time to time.

Male Wandering Nomad 3

Hey everybody, thanks for discussing things and staying on top of this while I've been gone for a few days. The internet at the farmhouse where I'm staying is super sporadic and I can only access it while practically leaning out of the window, haha.

Anyway, I haven't forgotten this and I'm writing to incorporate your backstories and characters for what I already had planned. I also think I'm going to give you guys the updated version of information I have written on Biston, hopefully soon, with a few important NPCs' profiles. And then we'll be ready to start.

Again, you'll have to bear with me while my internet capabilities fluctuate from time to time!

I'm just glad your keeping us up to date on your status.

Male Wandering Nomad 3

I have updated the Campaign Info section with information about Biston and its more notable inhabitants, please make your way over and read through it when you get the chance. A lot of it you know already, but I organized things better and added a few people and locations to the town.

EDIT: And I just started the Campaign Thread, so let's get going! I may have found a slightly more reliable window to lean out of in this cottage, and my signal is much better than I've been getting before :P

Could I assume that Calon has a small place that he rents a room, possibly in a farmhouse somewhere near town, but close to the forest?

Male Wandering Nomad 3

Yeah that sounds safe to assume. In fact, Jannet and Garris have figured out more or less exactly where they're living in Biston, but Calon and Rouqas might want to do the same. It doesn't really matter to me, but Calon and Rouqas are both relative newcomers to Biston, it probably makes more sense to have some sort of long-term renting or (for Rouqas) a shack out in the hills.

Feel free to flesh out those arrangements a bit, it might make things easier later on down the line.

And I like the roleplaying! I'll move us along soon.

Calon is staying in the barn at the Wesker's farm, located just outside of town between Lakeside and the Ashwood Forest. They offered to let him stay there cheap after he rescued their daughter Anka when she was stuck in a tree. (just modified the story a little from the recruitment thread)

Is that OK?

Male Wandering Nomad 3

Sounds great!

Male Wandering Nomad 3

Alright everybody, I left the last place I was staying at yesterday and today I'm back in a city with REAL WIFI in the hostel. I probably won't be here much longer, though: heading back out to the farmland. Hopefully the next place will have real wifi as well, and things will be just dandy.

I've got a question for any rules lawyers out there: by RAW, does Jannet's sonic damage not bypass the skeletons' DR because it's not bludgeoning? Because it seems to me that the skeleton's DR is only really in place vs. piercing and slashing attacks, and that, "realistically," elemental attacks would damage a skeleton just the same as everything else.

And we're waiting on Calon to start us off on Round 2.

Magic damage bypasses DR. I have highlighted the relevant text.

Damage Reduction wrote:

Some magic creatures have the supernatural ability to instantly heal damage from weapons or ignore blows altogether as though they were invulnerable.

The numerical part of a creature's damage reduction (or DR) is the amount of damage the creature ignores from normal attacks. Usually, a certain type of weapon can overcome this reduction (see Overcoming DR). This information is separated from the damage reduction number by a slash. For example, DR 5/magic means that a creature takes 5 less points of damage from all weapons that are not magic. If a dash follows the slash, then the damage reduction is effective against any attack that does not ignore damage reduction.

Whenever damage reduction completely negates the damage from an attack, it also negates most special effects that accompany the attack, such as injury poison, a monk's stunning, and injury-based disease. Damage reduction does not negate touch attacks, energy damage dealt along with an attack, or energy drains. Nor does it affect poisons or diseases delivered by inhalation, ingestion, or contact.

Attacks that deal no damage because of the target's damage reduction do not disrupt spells.

Spells, spell-like abilities, and energy attacks (even nonmagical fire) ignore damage reduction.

Sometimes damage reduction represents instant healing. Sometimes it represents the creature's tough hide or body. In either case, other characters can see that conventional attacks won't work.

If a creature has damage reduction from more than one source, the two forms of damage reduction do not stack. Instead, the creature gets the benefit of the best damage reduction in a given situation.

Unfortunately, undead are immune to any effect that requires a Fortitude save though:

undead traits wrote:

An undead creature possesses the following traits (unless otherwise noted in a creature's entry).

•No Constitution score. Undead use their Charisma score in place of their Constitution score when calculating hit points, Fortitude saves, and any special ability that relies on Constitution(such as when calculating a breath weapon’s DC).
•Darkvision 60 feet.
•Immunity to all mind-affecting effects (charms, compulsions, morale effects, patterns, and phantasms).
•Immunity to bleed, death effects, disease, paralysis, poison, sleep effects, and stunning.
•Not subject to nonlethal damage, ability drain, or energy drain. Immune to damage to its physical ability scores (Constitution, Dexterity, and Strength), as well as to exhaustion and fatigue effects.
•Cannot heal damage on its own if it has no Intelligence score, although it can be healed. Negative energy (such as an inflict spell) can heal undead creatures. The fast healing special quality works regardless of the creature's Intelligence score.
•Immunity to any effect that requires a Fortitude save (unless the effect also works on objects or is harmless).
•Not at risk of death from massive damage, but is immediately destroyed when reduced to 0 hit points.
•Not affected by raise dead and reincarnate spells or abilities. Resurrection and true resurrection can affect undead creatures. These spells turn undead creatures back into the living creatures they were before becoming undead.
•Proficient with its natural weapons, all simple weapons, and any weapons mentioned in its entry.
•Proficient with whatever type of armor (light, medium, or heavy) it is described as wearing, as well as all lighter types. Undead not indicated as wearing armor are not proficient with armor. Undead are proficient with shields if they are proficient with any form of armor.
•Undead do not breathe, eat, or sleep.

True that. Thanks for looking at that since I totally didn't even think to look. :-)

Male Wandering Nomad 3

Alright then, thanks guys! Sorry Jannet, looks like it was a wasted spell, but now we know ;/

Female Human Witch/1

Ah, bah, I missed that too. Fooey. Well, now I know. :)

I'm sorry, I just checked and Calon's TK fist does 1d4 damage, not 1d6. Should I re-roll the damage?

That's what I get for posting from work and not checking my sheet...

Male Wandering Nomad 3

Meh, it's just 1 measly skeleton. We'll pretend you got a max roll, and use the d4s from now on. This combat isn't meant to last very long or be of much importance at all, it's more just a way to introduce the group to each other and establish you guys as something of a team. And there's a plot device coming up in its conclusion :P

Moving on to Garris' delayed turn, now, and then Calon at the top of the round.

Male Wandering Nomad 3

Hey guys, I'm still here, but sadly... all of my campaign notes are not.

I've also been pretty busy on the new farm, and haven't had much time for rewriting. I will be updating as soon as possible, and haven't forgotten! Thanks for your patience, hopefully this delay won't last long.

HP 13 | AC 13 | T 11 | FF 12 | CMD 14 | F +5 | R +1 | W +1 | Init +1 | Per +7

Just a heads up, I will be out of town on Saturday and Sunday 11-24 & 11-25. I will be back on Monday 11-26.

Male Wandering Nomad 3

Thanks for the warning Rouqas -- I expected this weekend to be slow what with it being America's Thanksgiving. I just hope Jannet hasn't opted out like our other young Human friend, hah.

Speaking of Garris, you can assume that he's still with the group... I'll DMPC him in times of need: it just doesn't make sense for him to simply disappear from the town right now. He'll go away soon, I'm sure.

I also will open recruitment again soon. I am thinking about going for 2 more people and bringing the group up to 5? What do you guys think, and what sort of characters are you want? I always liked it when my DMs would let us players vote on the new recruits, so I imagine I'll do that if you guys would like it.

5 players would be fine with me. Any type of character would be cool, I think people should play what interests them rather than try to fill any 'role' within a group.

Male Wandering Nomad 3

Hello hello, I'm leaving Europe today and flying to Thailand. I'll be gone for maybe a day or two during transit, but hopefully I'll be back soon!

It's starting to look like Jannet has gone, as well -- I PM'd her several days ago and still no response. Waiting to see if Rouqas is still kicking around, as well...

Male Wandering Nomad 3

Is there anybody out there?

I am still here and would like to continue. I was just waiting to see who else was still playing, and if you have recruited some others to join this game.

HP 13 | AC 13 | T 11 | FF 12 | CMD 14 | F +5 | R +1 | W +1 | Init +1 | Per +7

Still here. I agree with Calon.

Male Wandering Nomad 3

Hey guys, sorry for the sudden silence. Glad to see you're both still here!

Unfortunately, I'm going to have to take a break from this that might last a week or two because internet is very rare where I've come. I'll use the time I have to try and set up some new recruits, but the game might have to pause for a bit. I'll post updates here and will pick things up again as soon as I have more reliable access to the internet!

That's cool. Thanks for keeping us informed!

Male Wandering Nomad 3

You guys still there? Hope you had a good and happy holidays season -- I'm just checking to make sure you're still interested! I'm back into the land of more regular internet access, and would be able to continue where we left off once we've gt some replacements.

I just put up a post in the recruitment thread and I hope to get some submissions lately. I'd appreciate your input on who might be best, I think 3 replacements would be nice.

Grand Lodge

M Elf Wizard (Transmuter)(Perception: +7, Init: +4, AC: 14, touch: 14, FF: 10, CMD: 14, HP: 7/7, F: +0 R: +4 W: +3, TK Fist: 6/6)

Still here! Three replacements sounds fine. It will be interesting to see what characters others come up with. Have you thought of PMing some of the others who posted characters during the original recruitment to see if they are still interested?

Hope your holidays were great as well!

Male Wandering Nomad 3

Considered it, yes, but was going to give the thread a day or two before trying that.

Male Wandering Nomad 3

I opened a new recruitment thread as the first one didn't attract attention. We've got 3 submissions they all seem like they'll more than suffice.

Rouqas, are you still there? It's been some weeks, just want to make sure.

Male Half-Ogre Vangaurd Commander (Warlord) 2 [HP 21/25 | AC 17/10/17 | Fort +6, Ref +0, Will +0 | Init +2; Perception +6]

Greetings. I am happy to be here and excited to get started.

@garabbot: Any chance you would allow me to purchase weapons and armor for crafting price and allow Gaurm to be wearing/using equipment of his own creation?

All I need to do is finalize his equipment and he will be good to go.

Female Human Ranger (Warden) 1

Happy to be here

Male Wandering Nomad 3

@Gaurm

As long there's no masterwork equipment, that sounds fine to me.

Male Half-Ogre Vangaurd Commander (Warlord) 2 [HP 21/25 | AC 17/10/17 | Fort +6, Ref +0, Will +0 | Init +2; Perception +6]

Very well, thank you. Gaurm should be good to go by close of business today.
