Game Master Peet

Lost in the desert! The party gets separated from a desert caravan during a sandstorm. Parched and starving, they stumble on a ruined city in the middle of the desert. The pyramid at the center of the city seems mostly intact, and they find a secret door leading inside...

8:30 AM, Day 3

The party assembles in the hallway and prepares to explore down the stairs.

A quick glance up the north end of the hallway reveals that the goblin corpses that once lay there have since been thoroughly destroyed by the jaws of the lizards. The remains are scattered around, and while they are still recognizable as goblin remains, it is only barely. The lizards themselves are nowhere to be seen.

The party begins to descend the stairs. Since the last time you were led by Orocrinos, who was travelling at a normal pace, you were unable to search the area you were going through. So this time (I am assuming here) you search the area carefully and proceed slowly.

After the party turns east, Ana detects a secret door in the north wall. No one in the party is able to detect any traps around it.

We are now on the Tier 3 Map

So, what now?
* Open the secret door?
* Continue down the passage?
* Something else?

Fistep carefully opens the door. Beyond is a room 20' deep and 30' wide.

The room is filled with crates and barrels. Five large brown beetles, each about 3' long, are breaking into them.

The beetles look similar to the fire beetles you encountered earlier, but they have no glowing glands.

Ferrous:
You recognize the beetles as oil beetles. In addition to biting they squirt a noxious oil a short distance. If the oil hits it raises painful blisters that take a long time to go away. In game mechanics the blisters give you a -2 to hit.

The beetles look up at you as the secret door opens. Their antennae wave in the air in your direction.

I am going to assume then that you move to the doorway so you have line of sight to the whole room. Sleep only affects enemies, so you don't need to worry about Ferrous.

sleep: 2d8 ⇒ (3, 7) = 10

Save George: 1d20 ⇒ 8
Save Ringo: 1d20 ⇒ 18
Save Pete: 1d20 ⇒ 18

Ouch! Well, that happens in games involving dice.

Sparkling sand seems to coalesce in the air of the room, falling softly on the beetles. One of the beetles ("George") slumps to the floor, not moving.

The other beetles move in, nearly surrounding Ferrous. One of them climbs up onto one of the crates in order to get at him. They snap their mandibles at him and squirt a brownish liquid at him from probosces on their faces.

Bite 1: 18 - 1d20 ⇒ 18 - (14) = 4
Squirt 1: 18 - 1d20 ⇒ 18 - (11) = 7

Bite 4: 18 - 1d20 ⇒ 18 - (4) = 14
Squirt 4: 18 - 1d20 ⇒ 18 - (12) = 6

Ferrous' armor protects him from the bites. But one of the beetles manages to catch a bare patch of skin with the squirting oil. Painful blisters begin to rise on Ferrous' skin.

Ferrous: no damage, but you now have a -2 on your to-hit rolls until the blisters are treated. You know that they go away naturally after about a day.

From your current position, you could attack "Pete" with a sling stone, but you would be at -3 to hit because of all the people in the way. Short range gives +1 to hit though, so it's a net -2. If you moved 5' to 7:17 (where Fistep was) you have line-of-sight to "John" and "Paul" and only Fistep is in the way, for a -1 to hit, offset by the +1 for short range.

Montague wrote:

You can always use thrown weapons in the meantime, though you can't see any enemies from your current position. BTW, some of the goblins you killed had crude shortbows, but they will only do 1d4 damage due to their poor construction.

I'll give both of you until midnight in case you want to change your mind, then I'll move ahead.

If you want clubs and firewood, you have found plenty of rooms with old furniture and other wooden objects. As to the bowstrings, I'm not sure how you would be able to tell what they are made of, but your guess would be from the intestine of some creature.

The outermost beetle ("Paul") snaps at Ferrous, and squirts more oil at him. Both attacks strike true; the bite manages to get past Ferrous' leg armor, while the oils splashes on his neck and face. The blisters burn fiercely, though at this point Ferrous is getting used to the feel of it.

If you are looking for thrown weapons, the "stick" is a crude version of the baton, and is throwable. It's damage is 1d3. I'm not going to make you roll again as you didn't roll a 4. Strictly speaking the club is not a thrown weapon (unlike Pathfinder). I don't feel like inventing rules for throwing non-throwable weapons right now.

With 3 people in the way you have a -3 to hit and you are at medium range for a thrown object. So you hit AC 3, which is still enough.

The beetle to the left (Pete) snaps at Ferrous. Once again Ferrous manages to step aside from the bite only to be splashed in the face once again with the stinging oil.

Ferrous: No damage, and again, no further penalty.

Round 3 Initiative:
Block 1: Talikshim, Zynazyr
Block 2: "Paul"
Block 3: Ana, Fistep, Montague
Block 4: "Pete"
Block 5: Ferrous

Round 4 Initiative:
Block 1: "Pete"
Block 2: Ana, Ferrous, Montague, Talikshim, Zynazyr
Block 3: "Paul"
Block 4: Fistep

Skipping ahead here for expediency; having Pete go before Ferrous so people don't have to wait for results.

The beetle snaps again, this time at Montague, but Montague manages to evade both bite and oil.

Everyone but Fistep is up. Ferrous may go twice; once at the bottom of round 3 and once in round 4. The beetle "Pete" has taken 2 HP damage. Fistep: if you want to post a conditional action that resolves after "Paul," go ahead.

You mean Fistep, no? :)

Argh! Yes, I mean Fistep. Did it again.

In a furious rage as his body burns and itches with the boils from the spitter beetles Ferrous grits his teeth and slashes away with his axe at the beetle that most recently spit at him. Pete

However both of Ferrous's swings miss wildly.

Montague is so surprised that his sword met some resistance, that the blade twists in his hands failing to deliver much damage.

"Ohhh!"

Grabbing a dagger, Zynazyr throws it at the same beetle and hits Ferrous in the back, luckily with the hilt. "Sorry about that. I think I'll stick to spells," he says sheepishly.

This is becoming a comedy of errors... :)

Ana's fails to find her mark between the combatants in front of her and her shot goes wide. Ferrous, eyes streaming with beetle oil, flails wildly at the beetles to no avail. Montague manages to nick a beetle in the softer mouthparts, though the beetle is not seriously injured. Talikshim keeps watch in case something else occurs. (I'll count that as delaying)

Startled by Ferrous' thrashing the beetle snaps at him again, but to no avail. Ferrous easily steps out of the way.

Fistep is up. Talikshim has delayed and may act if he wants. "Paul" will go after them; the rest of the party may post conditional actions if they want.
