Nice! I've heard it's beautiful country.
I'd prefer for you to respond to Nikos before we move on.
Lost City DM |
Will move ahead tomorrow or this evening.

Moved from Gameplay.
I forgot to go see the Magi to find out what 2nd lvl spells they can teach me before I leveled.
Actually, while we're on the subject, I think you guys wanted to store the treasure somewhere else... the secret room on the 2nd tier I think? Or was it the room on the 3rd tier where the snakes were? We could pause and allow for that side trip, and you could visit the magi on the way. If everyone agrees. There is an additional chance of wandering monsters though.
Unless I can delay picking a new spell, I'll take Heat Ray. I'll update my sheet later today with the spells I've scribed also.
Heat Ray is a good choice for a spike damage spell. It will do 3d8 damage (one die per level). The reverse only does 3d4 but has a chance of freezing a target in place.
For the record, your specialization gives no additional spell known at this level, but it's worth mentioning though that when you cast magic missile as a 1st level spell you now throw 2 missiles for 1d6+1 damage each. And you can boost it using a 2nd level slot to get a third missile. So you are already capable of doing that kind of damage. Though at fourth level Heat Ray will do 4d8 damage, whereas you won't get an additional magic missile until 6th level.
Re: Specialization - it looks like we get this every odd lvl going forward and can only raise each ability score once, correct?
This is basically correct.
The scripted end of the adventure will likely occur with some people having reached 5th level. Brathas might get to 6th. Ana will probably be no higher than 4th.
If we continue beyond that (either in the "expanded area" of the module or on to another adventure, like X1 perhaps), then we can worry about what happens at higher levels. At 9th level you would get access to the next tier of specializations, which would allow a second +1 to be added to a specific score, as well as expanded options for other types of specializations.
This is based on the original weapon specialization rules that appeared in the Companion or Master rules (I forget which), which had specializations of four different levels (Specialist, Expert, Master, and Grand Master).
Ana re: Continual Light
Right now there is only 1 spell left for me to scribe while you have 5. Since I can now cast Continual Light, I'd like to try to read it and then scribe it if successful. Then I can teach it to you. Also, I'm not sure of your reasoning in trying to read Detect Magic. I can scribe that one and teach it to you.
Remember that when teaching a spell the teacher must prepare and use up the spell (though it is not cast normally). So the real question is who wants to be the one to use up the spell to teach the other?
Zynazyr |
I'll wait to level up if we are going to retcon. Let's stop at the magi so I can see what they can teach me. A post from when we first met them stated it would be 250 gp although that may be for 1st level spells so 2nd lvl could be more. I think I should talk to them alone or with 1 other person. I don't want them seeing all the treasure we have.
If Ana scribes Continual Light now, we will have to wait until she levels in order to be able to use it and for me to learn it.
I think we were going to use the original camp, the secret room on lvl 2, to hide the coins.
Lost City DM |
FYI I will be off-line most of today. Going to a local Board Game convention.
Zynazyr |
Ouch, 1k gp/spell. A bit more than I thought. Was hoping for 500. I don't need continual light but could use the other 3. I could try to offer 2k for the 3 spells. Or offer 750 gp/spell. Otherwise, pay the 1k for stinking cloud and see if I can find the others later. Thoughts?
Zynazyr |
Some quick adding looks like we have about 33k in coins and 34k in jewelry. I agree using the books with the magi is a good idea as they should value them more than others. I'm fine with getting stinking cloud now and waiting on the rest although I'd still like to try to get a combo deal.
Lost City DM |
You could also use this as a way to try and dump the lower-value coins like silver pieces.
Lost City DM |
Worth pointing two other things out:
1. If Ana and Zynazyr share the cost for these (on the grounds that Zynazyr will teach the spell to Ana) then the amount is pretty easily absorbable from their share of the loot. If Zynazyr's numbers are correct, then everyone has a share of about 11,000 gp, roughly.
2. The books are treasure, but since they are bulky trade goods they are not worth XP until you sell them. Trading the books for a service will count as selling them and allow you to collect XP for them.
Wallia of Winterbourne Stoke |
Honestly of the books, I want to keep the Demonicon book and the one on Aleksander and Zenobia at least for tonight trying to get some information for the tomb and also something on Zargon ans such
Brathas |
If any of you guys have time for another game, the E6 Red Hand of Doom game I have taken over could use another couple of players.
The Recruitment page
Ferrous Grimgond |
Honestly I think selling the books except for the ones Wallia wants to read sounds like the best idea. The next best idea is Silver coins. Speaking of silver we should probably inquire as to where to purchase some silver weapons.

Guys:
FYI I am making preparations for Christmas and I am not sure how much time I will have to post on the weekend. I'll try to fit it in but I may not have anything for you until Sunday.
Zynazyr |
Re: Detect magic - Ana can try to read and then scribe if successful.
Re: Continual light - I'd like to try to read and then scribe if successful. If we let Ana scribe it, we have to wait for her to level to be able to use it.
Re: Knock - the same as continual light above.
Re: Identify rolls - do we need to tell you what we want to try to identify or do you assume we check everything we haven't identified yet?
Re: Leveling up - I'm hoping I get to keep my earlier hp roll for +5.
I'll take an Ability Specialization for +1 DEX.
For my spell: I was originally thinking Heat Ray for damage (3d8) and the reverse Freeze Ray for less damage but possible freeze. As LCDM pointed out, my magic missle now creates 2 for 2-7 each. But I'm open to input on other spells for potential crowd control.
Btwn the spell book and magi, I know Continual Light, Invisibility, Knock, Levitate, Phantasmal Force, Stinking Cloud, Web. (wow, nice)
Potential alternatives:
1. Control Earth (Water) - Earth can give CC, Water could have some RP uses.
2. ESP - obvious uses
3. Spider Climb (Grease) - Grease for CC
Anyone have any thoughts?
Brathas |
I think utility spells are often under-rated compared to crowd control.
Not every obstacle or challenge is a fight. Utility spells like ESP, Control Earth/Water, and Spider Climb can be extremely important regardless of any combat uses.

Re: Identify rolls - do we need to tell you what we want to try to identify or do you assume we check everything we haven't identified yet?
You now have a lot of stuff sitting around. So if you do not voice any particular opinion I will just assume you try to analyze as many things as possible.
If there are particular things you want to look at then let me know.
Re: Leveling up - I'm hoping I get to keep my earlier hp roll for +5.
I'll take an Ability Specialization for +1 DEX.
Yes, that's fine.
Anastoria |
With the imminent approach of Christmas, I am going to be out-of-touch from the 20th-27th. My brother-in-law is treating my wife and me to a trip to Disney World so that she can see the Christmas decor before her vision is completely lost. To that end, I will be unable to post during that time. If I am in your game, please bot me as necessary. If you are in my game, I will try to find the time before Wednesday to make a brief post, but the game will be suspended until Dec. 28th. Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and a very Happy New Year to all!
Lost City DM |
Thanks for letting us know, and have a great time!

Zynazyr |
Looks like my post from yesterday was eaten by the board.
Can I try to identify the ring we found in the Wizard's tomb?
If the Wand of paralysis works at a distance, I would like to carry it. If it needs a touch attack, I think it would be better used by Ana.
Lost City DM |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
The ring was identified as a ring of protection +1 and was identified in THIS POST. I believe Ana is currently wearing it.
The wand of paralysis projects a cone 60' long and 30' wide at the far end, and affects everyone in that area. Note that a save versus a wand is a little bit easier than versus a spell.
Fistep |
Ok, I updated the loot sheet. Brathas I gave you one of the oils as requested; heck I'd say take both as you are probably best at ranged.
In general, if you are going to use something, or find something wrong, you all should go updated the spreadsheet.
Zynazyr |
I added the Mirror of Protection and indicated Ana has it as I think it will help her the most.
I removed the gold ring as it was the same item as the ring of protection which led to my confusion.
I'm not sure who should carry the wand of paralysis since it affects everyone in the area. I guess I can carry it as a last resort or to try to move to get a clear shot.
Did I try to read the Continual Light spell? If I have time this morning I will, otherwise I will when we return.

Did I try to read the Continual Light spell? If I have time this morning I will, otherwise I will when we return.
You tried but sadly were not able to decipher anything new. You can try again when you camp tonight.
Lost City DM |
FYI guys:
Holiday Plans:
I should have a post later tonight (or in the wee hours of the morning as it were).
After that, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday I have Christmas events to attend (and I may be busy Tuesday too). I will be travelling for some of that period. I still expect to have internet access in that period but my posting frequency may suffer. Wednesday night I will be back home and things will return to normal for me.
Obviously I expect most of you are in the same boat and I won't sweat it if people are unable to post in that period.
Lost City DM |
Hope everyone had a great Christmas!
Lost City DM |
Zynazyr: I note that you haven't updated your spells prepared to include your 2nd level spells.
Keep in mind that spells like sleep, binding, and so on get a bit more powerful if you use second level slots to prepare them.
You just learned stinking cloud so you can't have prepared it today.
Also: which spell 2nd level did you end up going with?
Anastoria |
I'm back and will be spending today and tomorrow catching up. If you ever get the opportunity to do the Ultimate Disney Christmas Package, take it! For roughly $800/person, we stayed at a moderate resort (Coronado Springs), attended Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party, got extra hours in the parks, attended an exclusive Christmas dance party, had an exclusive holiday buffet with live entertainment (and the food was fabulous), and received a special gift in our room on Christmas day that contained a picture frame, serving tray, chocolates, cookies, and much more! All-in-all, a wonderful vacation at an excellent price! BONUS: Because our resort was undergoing construction, we also received three exclusive Disney trading pins featuring Donald and his amigos with construction tools!
I was able to do most everything I wanted to do, with the single exception of Avatar Flight of Passage (my shins were too big), but my wife and brother-in-law did experience it and they thought it was a lot of fun! If you don't know, Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party is an exclusive event with limited attendance where you spend the entire evening in the Magic Kingdom, riding rides, seeing shows, and getting free treats!
Anyway, back to your regularly scheduled adventure...
Zynazyr |
Ana - glad to hear you had a good time.
Sorry for my lack of posting the last few days. I've been busy with the family. I'll try to get my sheet updated with spells. I see I never posted a decision on my new spell. Since I already have a damage spell, I'll go with "Grease"
Lost City DM |
Happy new year everyone!
Lost City DM |
I have CLW and Remove Fear... I could possible cast cause Fear... I am not sure.
IIRC you also have light and resist cold.
As a 3rd level prophet cleric you have two spells known, and cure wounds spells you get for free (but not the reverse). I believe you chose light at 2nd level and remove fear at 3rd level.
Your talisman (the holy symbol) can also hold a single spell. I'm pretty sure that you used the scroll of resist cold to embed that spell in your holy symbol.
Yes, remove fear also allows cause fear.
Light can be used in combat to blind an enemy, or to illuminate an enemy, making him easier to hit. It also dispels darkness.
Resist cold also allows produce cold, which can be used to throw bolts of cold energy or to add extra cold damage to a weapon.
Lost City DM |
Hey guys... was resting up for the weekend but will have a post tonight.
Lost City DM |
OOC, I think this would be a colossal waste of time, kill momentum, not provide useful information, not contribute to a good story, and make us the bad guys. I get that Wallia wants to do this in character.
If it weren't for the Smelldox debacle I'd be okay with spending a bit of time on this but as it stands I don't think there's much point in taking prisoners anymore.
Overall this is a good instinct. The minions are not likely to have a lot of information.
Smelldox provided the group with some useful information, but then the party just left him with the NPCs for four or five days, doing nothing with him, and largely forgetting about him.
If you had captured the cleric, on the other hand, he might have known some useful things.
Lost City DM |
Guys, I know you've been waiting, but I'm really exhausted right now. So I will get to this by Monday night.
Brathas |
Quite the interesting development.
I hope we deal with Zargon before the Maidens' genius plan comes to fruition. Adds another element of time pressure...
Edit: Ferrous is just playing along with the Maidens, right? Or does he think 'enrage the unholy abomination so it attacks the city' really is a sound plan?
