3 x fuse grenades
1 magical crossbow bolt
moving into the next room the party sees Cushioned chairs and metal tables are situated throughout this small room. To the north are several doors, while a few broken machines lie against the walls. Broken panels cover the ceiling, and mounds of what look like shattered glass have been pushed under the tables.
No enemies are present
The rooms to the north are bedrooms and a bathroom, badly treated by the thugs you have just defeated

Anody will pick up a hand crossbow and a grenade
Spellcraft on magic bolt: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (18) + 9 = 27
Perception room: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20
Oh dear. No respect for such a wondrous place. I think the people in charge are convinced this ancient ship will be blown to bits in short order. We need to step them.
According to the map there is another door that leads to the reactor? I think we should go there
Sharae of the River |
Sharae is currently on 30/30HP and Valia (having taken 11HP in the last two fights) is on 21/42HP.
Seeing Valia badly bruised and battered, and with trepidation as to what is awaiting them, Sharae provides divine healing to her friend.
Sharae, Cure Moderate Wounds (Losing Level 2 Spell, ‘Hold Person’) on Valia: 2d8 + 4 ⇒ (3, 6) + 4 = 13
Valia now on 34/42 HP.
Fine to carry on to the next room.
Criek Prisil |
Are fuse grenades special/uncommon enough to need a check to identify their use? otherwise, I'll pick them up as backup ammo.
Once Sharae has finished her ministrations, Criek attempts to stealthily lead the way towards the reactor, quickly examining & listening at the doors before easing them open to slip through.

Cautiously the party moves through a airlock door system into the next room.
A balcony runs around the edges of this domed chamber, the curved walls of which are covered in blinking lights and unidentifiable machinery. A few steps lead down from this balcony in the middle of the room. Just north of these steps sits a large machine with a pink glass tabletop-like surface above which float semitransparent images of some sort. The
balcony is wider on the south side of the stairs, where a strange statue stands that seems to have been cobbled together from broken machines into the shape of an upraised claw or talon. A mound of junk lies in a heap before the claw, while two smoking braziers burn softly to each side. To the east looms a pair of immense black metal doors framed by a rotating arch of pulsing red lights.
A tall, winged figure steps out from behind the statue, holding a javelin, which crackles with energy.
So! it says in a rasping voice. My mistresses enemies! At last I can reveal myself to you. Please don't die too quickly. It will spoil the fun. Know this, I am Gruethur, chosen of Hellion, and I am your doom!
He flexes his arms and a sickly green light flows along and past metal plates implanted in his stoney flesh, looking like a technological demon. With a sickening snarl the combat begins.

Some notes
The railings are four foot high, and can be jumped with no movement penalty (acrobatics DC 16) or double moved across. small characters can duck under them for no penalty. The railings border the lower central area, which is five feet below the level the characters are currently on. If jumped, a further acrobatics roll may be needed to not take fall damage (1d6).
Ayla Noya Aiba |
Ayla goes moves in on the monster with her Nodachi.
acro: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6 she stumbles some.

Ayla blow lands, but does little damage to the mechanical horror. It steps back and hurls its weapon at ayla.
Javelin: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (17) + 9 = 26
damage: 1d6 + 1d6 + 6 ⇒ (3) + (6) + 6 = 15
The Javelin slams into Ayla, electrical damage increasing the effect. Then, to your amazement, the weapon flies back to the hand of the metal menace.
Gruethur spits at petty unbelievers
everyone else is up.
Sharae of the River |
"Ayla, it pains me to say this but you's better start that monstrosity... I'm going to give this insult to nature something to think about!!!", urging Ayla to start the chainsword, Valia hurdles the railings... jarring his knees badly as he lands before rushing at the gargoyle... attempting to grapple with it...
Valia, Acrobatics (hurdle the railings): 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (14) - 1 = 13, Failed
Valia, Acrobatics (avoid damage due to Acrobatics Fail): 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (10) - 1 = 9, Failed - 1d6 ⇒ 1 Damage.
Valia, Grapple vs Gargoyle: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 = 19
(Valia provokes an AoO with his Grapple attempt).
Meanwhile, holding her weapon aloft, Sharae causes her starknife to burst into rampant flames.
Sharae, Casting Sun Metal on Starknife.
Valia on 33/42 HP and Sharae on 30/30 HP.
Criek Prisil |
Criek glances at the double doors leading towards the reactor. Perhaps I could just pop through and see about that meltdown thing while I'm still invisible and that monster is distracted? Let the others take care of this?
Seeing Valia's charge, though, he sighs to himself--...well, I can't leave him to that, can I?--and maneuvers to get an angle for bombing.
ranged touch, point-blank, precise bombs to miss friendlies: 1d20 + 7 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 7 + 1 = 22

Sharae of the River |
Before I post for a heavily shredded elf, may I point out that the Gargoyle is Grappled for a -2 penalty to attack rolls, Dazzled for a -1 penalty to attack rolls and finally Prone for a -4 penalty to attack rolls. However Valia, by grappling, is also Grappled and takes a -4 penalty to Dex (-2 to AC for an effective AC of 16). If all of the Gargoyle’s penalties apply then only the Gore attack hits (for 6HP)
Thoughts GM?
Sharae of the River |
Obviously your call GM but why is Valia prone with him? If the Gargoyle was prone when Valia attempted the Grapple, I would have thought there was no way Valia was goimg to start rolling on the floor with it... I would have just had Valia sitting over it - Having said that, I can't find anything in the rules either way so it's entirely your call... I will pop a gameplay post up tomorrow dependent on whether Valia is on 7 HP or 27 HP!!!
Sharae of the River |
Hopefully Ayla also used a Standard Action in the last round to start the Chainsword?
Attempting to hurdle the railings to get to Valia before he succumbs to the attacks of the gargoyle, Sharae trips…
Sharae, Acrobatics (hurdle the railings): 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4, Failed
…but, despite her spectacular fall, lands without hurting herself.
Sharae, Acrobatics (avoid damage due to Acrobatics Fail): 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 1 = 17, Successful
Rushing up to Valia, she sacrifices the last of her more powerful spells to imbue healing upon her struggling friend…
Sharae, Cure Moderate Wounds (losing Returning Weapon) on Valia: 2d8 + 4 ⇒ (2, 7) + 4 = 13
Gritting his teeth through the pain, Valia maintains his grapple of the gargoyle and, grabbing hold of its arms, pins it to the floor, ”Make it count Ayla… make it count…”
Valia, Maintain Grapple (already grappling): 1d20 + 4 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 4 + 5 = 25
Valia, Standard Action to Maintain Grapple and to Pin Gargoyle
Valia on 20/42HP and Sharae on 30/30HP
Anody Gearon, Prof. |
Can Anody take one move action to get to Valia? Assuming so
Oh dear oh dear oh dear oh dear Anody rushes to Valia as fast as he can and places a hand on the elf and casts Heroism making sure to stay away from the gargoyle.
+2 morale bonus on attack rolls, saves, and skill checks for 40 minutes
Anody Gearon, Prof. |
Huh now that I think about it maybe a +1 to AC from a Naturalist Performance would be a better idea? Can I change my action to that instead of the Heroism spell? But the Gargoyle is pinned so it can't even attack next round and the Heroism spell means that Valia would have a good chance of maintaining the pin.
Sharae of the River |

I was being silly - +2 to attack rolls / saves is all good.
Sharae of the River |
Ayla also starts up the chain sword std action
Erm, didn't you / shouldn't you have done that last round? Reading back, all you did last round was Fervor (swift) and draw Chainsaw (Move) - only saying because if the gargoyle breaks its pinned condition next turn then Valia's whole grapple (whilst getting shredded) will have been a missed opportunity...
Criek Prisil |
nobody has moved on the map, looks like, but Valia is adjacent to Greuther; Anody and Sharae adjacent to Valia but not to Greuther; Ayla a five-foot-step away from him from when he stepped back to throw his javelin, and I still a bit away? Unless Ayla did in fact start the chain sword last round, and can five-foot-step and coup de grace now, the following applies:
Seeing the monster tear into Valia, Criek moves closer to the fray and takes aim with another bomb, hoping to slow the creature down --
frost bomb away, ranged touch/point blank: 1d20 + 7 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 7 + 1 = 24
cold damage: 2d6 + 4 ⇒ (6, 5) + 4 = 15 and DC16 Fort save or staggered for 1 round
chillblame |
Ayla you had time to start up the chain sword last round. I'll allow it to be running now, if you want.
Fort save: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
With a sudden blast of cold, the gargoyle screams in rage.

Actually you hit. He loses his dex bonus, and an additional -4 to AC and you get a +4 to hit (prone). Sorry I miss calculated his AC. It is actually 14 right now.
Alya slams the chainsword down, striking the emabattled gargoyle. The blade cuts through his stony skin, cuasing him to roar in pain. Sparks fly as the rotating blade strikes the floor after slicing through part of the beasts shoulder.
Gruethur attempts to flick Valia off
counter grapple: 1d20 + 11 - 1 ⇒ (9) + 11 - 1 = 19
He breaks out of Valia's grip, but his movements are slowed by the effects of Crieks's bomb.

AC is now correct, as he has regained some of his dex, and no longer is pinned. It is a little odd, but it doesn't say if you are still grappled if you break out of a pin. I am ruling the gargoyle is still grappled, for now.
Sharae of the River |
As the gargoyle struggles against his pinning manoeuvre, Valia tries to secure the monstrosity once more... But the vicious action of the chainsaw is a horrific distraction to him - his distaste of all things technological reinforced by the buzzing, clattering weapon...
Valia, Maintain Grapple (Already Grappling): 1d20 + 4 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 4 + 5 = 14
Valia, Standard Action to Maintain Grapple and Pin
Sharae, seeing the gargoyle breaking free, calls upon Desna...

Valia on 31/42 HP and Sharae on 30/30HP.
Anody Gearon, Prof. |
Anody starts a Naturalist Performance. Subject: Gargoyles.
Oh dear he's gotten free. Usually gargoyles aren't as mechanically enhanced but in combat they are much the same, using claw and tooth to...
gain a +1 insight bonus to AC and on attack rolls and saving throws against extraordinary, supernatural, and spell-like abilities
Criek Prisil |
Seeing the gargoyle regaining some control, Criek's hand scrabbles at his bandolier, coming away with his last bomb components --
touch attack, point-blank, barded: 1d20 + 7 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 7 + 1 + 1 = 11
frost damage: 2d6 + 4 ⇒ (1, 6) + 4 = 11
Sharae of the River |
Acording to the PRD, which includes the Technology Guide, Chainsaws are 18-20 x2 Weapons - so Ayla's roll is a Critical Threat. GM - if Ayla doesn't post a Crit Confirmation could you GM roll one? Rather hoping that we can get through this combat before everything gets slow / quiet over the holidays.
