Gazing at the stars, Sharae opens her heart and listens to their song... This night though, there is a new voice in the Astral Choir, quiet at first but rising in volume...drowning out everything else...filling the Desnan's mind with unintelligible symbols, characters and phrasing. Alarmed, Sharae recoils and, physically shaking, looks to the sky again.

...the new voice is gone, the familiar song is sung once again...with one gentle insistent addition...

...Numeria

You are all in the copper coin, a popular inn in the town of torch. The place is a buzz with rumor and speculation. Firstly, the great flame that gives torch its name has gone out. Secondly one of the towns councilors (Konnir Baine) has vanished.

You have being summoned to meet with the town council. That meeting is a few hours away.

Menu
Rusty Ale 2cp
Wineberry mead 4cp
Steelforge Stout 4cp
Blackhill Whiskey 1sp (1gp for bottle)

R-66Y waits patiently for the time of their meeting to arrive, preferring to stand rather than sit. He listens intently to the conversations being carried on around the common room, giving no reaction until the topic of Konnir Baine's disappearance comes up.  He immediately interrupts, a barrage of questions spewing forth in rapid succession,

"The man who found the automaton below has gone missing? Is it known where he may have stored it?  Will this topic be covered in our meeting? It is very important that I examine the android."

...and eliminate it if necessary.

Professor Anody Gearon, a lecturer on leave from The Arcanarium univesity of Absalom, has only recently arrived in Torch to study Numerian artifacts, and so has never seen the Torch actually lit much to his regret. He is just settling into the small gnomish community in Torch and starting to make inquiries on how to go about getting permission to start his studies when he receives the summons of the town council. Intrigued he wanders down to the Copper Coin to mull over this latest development before he heads to the council.

The journey into Numeria was unexpectedly difficult, the flow of the river fighting Sharae’s small boat for each league to the north, the weather unpredictable with torrential rain giving way to baking sun and then returning to downpours within an hour, the flies…

oh yes, the flies…dear Sellen, I love you as my mother…but, just for once, allow me a day free of these damnable insects…

Several days beyond the River Kingdoms, sitting at the riverbank with a simple breakfast of biscuit and apples, Sharae met her first Numerian Artificial Human. The elegant man strode to the water’s edge and, removing his cloak, had immersed his head in the river without realising he was being watched. Coming back up for air, patterns across his bare scalp shone…brightly luminescent in the dawn…turning towards Sharae, he realised he had been seen and, instantly, donned his cloak and hood…

…neither of them spoke…Sharae realising what she had seen…the Android clearly assessing whether Sharae presented a threat…

With the most open smile she could muster, Sharae held an apple in her outstretched hand…

”I am but a traveller here, you have nothing to fear. Eat with me?”

Without words, the Android set himself down next to Sharae and took the apple, turning it over and over in his hand…

Whether they spoke for hours or minutes, Sharae couldn’t tell…she told him of her life on the river, the songs in the stars, the voice that had briefly drowned out those very songs and so many other things…

She certainly didn’t recall falling asleep but waking to the sound of the river lapping against the stones she was resting upon, she found the Android gone…

My Boat!!!

Sharae’s vessel, a simple boat but one that had been her constant companion for the last fifteen years, was gone…Anger, Sorrow and Panic rose in her mind in equal measure for several long minutes until, finally looking around, she saw her belongings tidily placed at the river bank…drawn marks in the ground…an arrow pointing north and, in beautifully ornate writing, ‘Torch’.

Packing her meagre belongings into her backpack, checking her Starknife was still at her belt, the follower of Desna headed north.

If everything I've heard is true, I'll be able to see Torch from a long ways off...

Ayla enters the Copper Coin knowing the commotion caused by the flame and, town councilor, Konnir Baine missing.

She thinks as she walks to and sits at a table
"This is going to be a rowdy crowd, probably as bad as when the Foundry Tavern holds Happy hour during a festival."

"And I am being summoned by the council. I'm wondering what they want.
Hopefully it's not something that would make dad angry, like the time council decided to have one of my sisters escort those folk from the Technic League around when payment was due.
Good thing Mom stopped him before he went to far, and got the council to compromise some."

Ayla orders a stew with some bread and notices some new faces in the place
"Looks like some new comers, an Elf, a Gnome and a pale man."

Criek entered the Copper Coin, tail and whiskers visibly drooping from under the edges of his disheveled cloak.

The flame extinguished, Khonnir missing -- either of these would be a cruel setback, but both? I just don't see how my studies can continue. Failed again...and what could the Council want from me, of all people? Ah, well, I suppose I have literally nothing else to be done.

Looking around the common room, the crestfallen ratfolk perks up at the sight of a familiar face.

"Why, Valia, it's been some time! ...Dare I hope you know something of Khonnir's whereabouts? I've been invited by the Council, and have to imagine it's about him."

As she walked Sharae became aware of the flowers woven into her hair…she smiled to herself realising where they had come from…and why,

…my friend…you could have just asked…May Desna smile upon your journey as she smiles upon me…and, one day, maybe you will leave the boat for another traveller…

The weather stayed mercifully mild as Sharae trekked north, the farther she travelled from the river, the more arid the ground became, lush meadows becoming scrub...

…how do people manage to survive here? We aren’t that far from the River Kingdoms yet …could this land even be farmed?

Her journey north was without further event until, coming over the crest of a small hill, the welcome sight of a moderately sized town. Nestled around a blackened hill, the town looked welcoming enough…

…and if I hurry, I’ll get there before the next downpour…thought it would be Torch though, can’t quite place where I am from my maps…

Pulling her hood up as the weather turned to gentle rain, Sharae briskly walked down the hill and, finally joining a well-trodden road, she makes short work of the final miles to the town.

Arriving at the town before the heavens open, she accosts the first person she meets…

”Excuse me, I appear to be a little lost, what is this place?”

The response she gets is terse, stressed and emotional, ”This Place? This Place? Well…it used to be Torch…but I guess we don’t got no right to call it that no more…you may as well turn around the way you came Miss, this town will blow away like dust in the wind when we can’t pay our taxes”, the man, trudging away shouts back, ”But if you are staying… well, the Copper Coin ain’t so bad”.

…that was yesterday…today is a new day, well rested after a night with a roof over her head, Sharae has spent the day talking to the locals…listening to their worries, about the flame, about Khonnir, about their missing sons and daughters…and, where she believes it will guide or help, telling tales of Desna.

Tomorrow, I will have a look at where this flame burnt…maybe there will be something I can do

…it is late in the afternoon when a man wearing an official town badge approaches her, with a certain degree of resignation in his voice, he speaks, ”The Town Council request your presence this evening…Please do not be late”, and with that, turns and leaves.

Refusing to speculate too much about the nature of the meeting will be, Sharae spends the rest of the afternoon in the local market…browsing, talking, listening… Soon enough evening falls and she returns to the Copper Coin…

Back to where I started in the Recruitment Thread

Stepping into the bar, a slender white-cloaked woman...notable more for the intricate tattoos that adorn her exposed arms than for the fact that she has delicate lilies woven into her hair...nods to the Ulfen and, turning to the gnome...

"You are a traveller like myself?"

Her voice is delicate, her words softly spoken...almost as if she is unaccustomed to speaking to other people...

Anody, while perusing the menu and wondering if he should give the Rusty Ale another try, perks up when he hears the newcomer speak about the Council. Excuse me he says but did you say that you have been asked to see the Council? My word I wonder if it's a coincidence that I have been as well. Anody hops off his stool and walks over to the dishevelled ratfolk with a smile and an offered handshake. Name's Anody. Anody Gearon. Newcomer to town. I'm supposed to see the council in a few hours.

Bah I'm slow I keep getting ninjaed

Turning to the beautiful human woman that had addressed him just as he made his own move Anody adjusts his spectacles and grins wider as he looks up. Ahah. Yes. I'm lately of Absalom and just arrived at Torch a week or so ago. I wager you're even newer to the place. I would have remembered seeing you around.

I don't know what I could offer them; I've only just returned to town."

In a distracted effort at politeness, Criek adds, "...Absalom, did you say? What brings you here? I don't know there's much to recommend. Especially now the flame's out; it was much of what gave this place hope."

Anody strokes his beard. Khonnir Baine, I have heard his name many times since arriving. It is a shame I did not have the pleasure of meeting him.

As for why I'm here. I'm a lecturer, professor actually, from The Arcanarium in Absalom and have been focusing my research on Numeria. This is an incredibly fascinating place to study and honestly the meager amounts of texts and documents that manage to get to the outside world from here just aren't enough to paint a full picture. From what I gathered from the Numerians in Absalom I spoke to Torch is the only place in the interior of Numeria that is actually friendly to outsiders. And so here I am.

The small gnome shakes and head and sighs It seems the light of the Torch is what made this place brighter and freer than the rest of the region. And now it's out.

At the bar, Valia is secretly proud of the red marks he bears under his armor. They are scratches from another night he'll never forget. He has a bottle of whisky and a half-full low glass in front of him. Deducting the 1gp

to Dash the friendly android, "Khonnir knew what he was doing. Still, it merits a look, doesn't it? I would like to have a look at it." He savors a sip from his glass.

To Criek, "Unless he's returned from below, I expect that's where he is. Apologies, I know little else my friend. There is much I hope to find out, however. Have you seen Val of late?"

Clearly nodding to both Ayla Noya Aiba & Sharae of the River, he renders his face into a polite smile. They look capable. Perhaps they might be available for discourse.

Catching up with Valia, the first thing Sharae notices is the unmistakable smell of whiskey coming from the man, …this one has been at the bar for a good part of the day…and yet, he has a cold clarity in his voice…in fact, he seems totally unaffected by the alcohol…

Hearing the door to the Inn opening and closing behind her, she looks back to see Criek and another man hurrying to catch up with Valia.

It seems that a few of us are concerned about Khonnir…that is good to know…

Sharae walks with an elegant grace, her movements lithe and it is clear that she can, if needs arise, move at quite a pace...those paying more attention would also notice the light metallic 'chink' noise as her star-knives, hidden beneath her cloak, gently chime against each other as she walks.

"In a fight? Oh, I think he can handle himself -- he was certainly never one to shrink away from danger, but smart enough to avoid it if it wasn't necessary."

The ratfolk frowns as he mulls the second half of Sharae's question. "To be honest, I don't know what to think. If he emerged successfully from his first trip to the caves, he must have thought he could handle a second trip without a problem...or maybe what he saw the first time was so critical he couldn't leave it be, or wait to arrange for a larger expedition? ...and with a more concerned, understanding face towards Criek, "Then, let us hope he is still working on something down there..."

Waiting for a suitable point in the conversation, Sharae relays what she had heard in the Copper Coin, "Seems like the Flame going out has got more than just the Town Council excited, a fellow back at the Inn said word had come from Starfall that the Black Sovereign was on his way to Torch...and he'd get here pretty soon...now I'm new to these parts and politics were never something to hold my interest, but that's not a good thing, right?"

There is a black-branded bottle firmly corked in his right hand, which he shifts to his left for the customary salutations.

"I am your servant Aratheusaranae Valaya'Eye'an'ayaaroscatamblinas" He rattles off, half in elven.

"Please, call me Valia."

In reply to the questions about Khonnir "Even having met him a few times, I hear more of him than know him. His reputation is great here."

Seeing the bottle being brandished and with a rising suspicion that some of Valia's 'name' may just have been made up or, at best, slurred, Sharae starts to doubt the wisdom of her choice, ...have I just followed a drunk on a wild goose chase?

She stoops slightly to whisper in Criek's ear, "Is he always like this?"

"No, not always," Criek murmurs in return. "He can be quite patient and focused. Taught me archery, in fact -- no mean feat!" Thoughtfully, he adds, "I think this is his way of loosening up when he foresees danger, whatever that tells you."

"By Kyonin, I have never professed to be a barbarian, young one."
He takes a look at how much of the bottle remains.

The corners of his mouth turn down in a slight frown.
"Though, perhaps there will come an age when I might attempt the profession."

OK, the party approaches the Foundry Tavern, an odd combination of drinking establishment and metal working foundry. A sign is on the side of the tavern, Closed until further notice

You are talking quietly among yourselves, as you move closer. Then all talk stops as you hear the scream of a woman.
