Lothan Robgard |
I'll definitely be keeping an eye out. Lothan takes a quick glance at the surrounding area then concentrates on looking for the clues.
Perception: 1d20 + 14 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 14 + 2 = 19
That stinks. If taking 10 is possible, then 26.
SD DM |
Luck 3: 1d100 ⇒ 5, 1d100 ⇒ 26
You work your way down the slope without finding anything. While cutting through a band of denser vegetation between the base of of the slope and the sandy beach.
Tyrrol :
Mordecai:
Tyrrol Radanavich |
Tyrrol nods towards an oddly stout, and apparently diseased, tree.
"Mordecai, what do you make of that. A trunk covered with smooth translucent blisters of various sizes filled with red liquid, and only two outsized (man-sized) leaves at its crown, is hardly normal..."
Mordecai |
"It is like nothing I have seen before. I would advise against approaching it, as I can't imagine those red blisters are filled with tasty sweetmeats..." Mordecai says, regarding the strange tree with a wary eye.
Perception check to inspect the tree from a safe distance, looking in particular for dead animals near the tree, or other signs of danger. 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (18) + 10 = 28
SD DM |
Kuva steps on a mass of roots as he nears the trunk of the tree. Suddenly two vines whip toward him, and the tree shows a an unatural limberness as it bends nearly double and the two leaves at its crown try to close like a Venus flytrap upon Kuva.
Initiative: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16
The first round everyone gets 1 standard action. Normal actions will apply in round 2.
Tyrrol Radanavich |
Initiative: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2, or 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 1 = 17. I will take the 17 :-)
Round 1:
Many plants die to make our houses, our ships, and our books, as well as serving as fodder... I guess it is only fair that occasionally, some fight back.
Shrugging, Tyrrol calmly ambles towards the carnivorous plant, hefting his flail speculatively.
Mordecai |
Initiative 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 1 = 19
"Back away from it and let us return to searching for skymetal. This plant is a waste of our time." Mordecai says dismissively as his morningstar floats through the air and attempts to strike it the carnivorous plant.
hand of the acolyte powered morningstar attack 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 25
B/P damage 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Lothan Robgard |
Intiative: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17
"What the...!" Lothan lets loose an arrow at the freak tree.
Mwk. Longbow, Comp (Str +1) w/DA: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8
Obviously startled from the appearance of the tree, Lothan's shot goes way wide. "Dang!"
SD DM |
Round 1 Initiative Order :
Mordecai 19
Tyrrol 17
Lothan 17
Plant 16
Lecian 23 -->15 via held action
Kuva 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12
Mordecai assaults the tree with his mace. It chips away some bark.
Tyrrol moves toward the tree. Lothan's shot flies wide.
The tree's leaves plunge toward Kuva and the two tentacles whip toward him.
bite 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (16) + 13 = 29 ... 2d6 + 7 ⇒ (2, 6) + 7 = 15 plus grab,
tentacle 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (14) + 11 = 25 ...1d8 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
tentacle 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (6) + 11 = 17 ...1d8 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10
grapple attempt 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (4) + 18 = 22
Kuva is seized by the plant and lifted into the air.
I make that 19 hp damage and Kuva is now grappled.
Lecian's magic missiles explode into the side of the tree. 2d4 + 2 ⇒ (1, 4) + 2 = 7
Kuva to go to end the round. Then top of round 2.
Grab (Ex)
Creatures with grab receive a +4 bonus on combat maneuver checks made to start and maintain a grapple.
Unless otherwise noted, grab works only against opponents no larger than the same size category as the creature. If the creature can use grab on sizes other than the default, this is noted in the creature's Special Attacks line.
Grappled:
A grappled creature cannot use Stealth to hide from the creature grappling it, even if a special ability, such as hide in plain sight, would normally allow it to do so. If a grappled creature becomes invisible, through a spell or other ability, it gains a +2 circumstance bonus on its CMD to avoid being grappled, but receives no other benefit.
Tyrrol Radanavich |
Round 2:
Tyrrol shrugs as he looks in Mordecai's direction.
"Yr wyf yn cytuno, ond os ydym yn gwneud hynny, mentraf ddweud y byddem yn gadael Kuva ar ôl."
He then moves up, and takes a swing...
+1 Consecrated Ancestral Heavy Flail: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (17) + 11 = 28, for 1d10 + 14 ⇒ (7) + 14 = 21 Magical Bludgeoning damage.
SD DM |
OOPS! Forgot Kuva's round 1 action. I'll give him another day. In the meantime his action won't affect your round 2 results....
The party piles on the damage. Mordecai's morningstar chips away some bark. Tyrrol knocks a chunk of the trunk flying. Lothan buries an arrow deep in one of the red blisters.
If I end up DMPCing Kuva, what do you think he'd do when cayght in a grapple like this try to escape or try to deal damage? My gut says hack and slash even with the grappled penalty. Please reply in the OOC thread.
Kuva Azul |
With a roar, the fiery halfling tries to burst free from the plant's grasp.
Rage and counter-grapple: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (9) + 8 = 17
He struggles against the vines, his defiance echoing through the trees.
I assume still grappled, and at 22 hp thanks to raging, 10 rounds of rage left.
SD DM |
Despite Kuva's rage and struggles, the halfling can feel the tree drawing him inside its trunk.
Round 2:
Mordecai 19
Tyrrol 17
Lothan 17
Plant 16
Lecian 15
Kuva 12
Well, Kuva has certainly made an impression on us all.
Tyrrol Radanavich |
Round 3:
Tyrrol calmly continues to smash away at the trunk...
+1 Consecrated Ancestral Heavy Flail: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (9) + 11 = 20, for 1d10 + 14 ⇒ (4) + 14 = 18 Magical Bludgeoning damage.
Lothan Robgard |
Round 3
Lothan fires away at the tree again, starting to worry if they can kill the tree creature before it eats Kuva.
Mwk. Longbow, Comp (Str +1) w/DA: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24
Damage w/DA: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12
HA! What are the odds of that?! Back to back, E-XACT!
SD DM |
End of last round forgot to resolve Lecian Lecian's scorching ray hits the trunk and the tree recoils as flames lick at its bark. The flames fade away leaving smooth, blackened oozing patches.
Kuva fails to escape
Stim and Samaritha snap out of their paralyzing fear and move to help. That will teach me to take long breaks. I forgot they were with you guys.
Now resolving the new round:)
Initiative, Round 3 (called so by popular demand):
Mordecai 19
Tyrrol 17
Lothan 17
Plant 16
Lecian 15
Kuva 12
Stim and Sam 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
Mordecai's morning star glances off the the bark. Tyrrol's flail and Lothan's arrow both cut deeply into the trunk. The tree pulls back. Its roots writhe over the ground and it begins to wade away from you, carrying Kuva in its mouth. As it goes it tries to choke down the halfling.
CMB 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (20) + 18 = 38 ... damage 2d6 + 9 ⇒ (1, 5) + 9 = 15
Kuva disappears from sight into the trunk.
Kuva:
[ooc]Effectively swallowed whole this turn. I strongly suggest trying to cut yourself out.
Lecian, given the efficacy of the scorching ray, I'll let you reconsider the crossbolt bolt if you wish.
Tyrrol Radanavich |
Since it did not provoke AoOs, I assume the tree only managed a 5' step away?
Round 4:
Tyrrol follows the retreating tree.
"Ni fyddwch yn cael i ffwrdd yn hawdd; efallai nad oes gennych unrhyw benglog i wasgu, ond byddaf yn gweld eich sudd gwasgaru ar draws yr ynys hon!"
+1 Consecrated Ancestral Heavy Flail: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (18) + 11 = 29, for 1d10 + 14 ⇒ (8) + 14 = 22 Magical Bludgeoning damage.
Mordecai |
Mordecai is startled at the trees ability to uproot itself and move, faster than a human, even! He rushes forward ten paces and sends his morningstar forth again.
30 ft. move, then hand of the acolyte powered morningstar 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22
B/P damage 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
SD DM |
Kuva, then Lecian up. (If L wants to reconsider the crossbow. If not, I'll just use that. )
Lothan Robgard |
Round 4
"Oh crap! It's eaten Kuva! Why won't this freakin' thing die!" Lothan nocks another arrow and let's it fly.
Mwk. Longbow, Comp (Str +1) w/DA: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17
Damage w/DA: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12
SD DM |
Lecian's ray envelops the tree in flames again. The roots lie still, the two tentacles droop and the trunk seems to just sag. It slowly totters over exposing a wolf-sized ellipsoid of grey matted fiber.
It's dead, Jim.
Kuva Azul |
Attack roll: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (10) + 9 = 19
Damage: 1d6 + 9 ⇒ (2) + 9 = 11 if it's the falchion,
1d4 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8 if he has to use the staff.
That said, if he's dead, that would be a whole other ball game.
SD DM |
Lothan and Mordecai tackle the tree. Under their efforts the wood at the top splits revealing a narrow cavity lined with a resilient muscle-like material. Lying in the cavity is Kuva's falchion.
Lecian prods the fiber bundle. It moves slightly in and out where he pushed against it but is otherwise inert.
Tyrrol Radanavich |
Tyrrol shrugs.
"I guess he is dead, then. Not the most pleasant way to go, to be sure, but is not most life ultimately pointless...? At least this was over relatively quickly."
Tyrrol's views are not his player's ;-)
Lothan Robgard |
Lothan reaches in and grabs Kuva's weapon. "Well, here's his sword but still no sign of Kuva!" Lothan then aides Mordecai in tearing out more of the cavity.
Know Nature: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14
SD DM |
The halfling's slingstaff is a little farther in.
Sorry to say I think I know what you're smiling about Set. BTW have you checked Randi's equipment out?
Tyrrol Radanavich |
Tyrrol shrugs.
"Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I am curious, though: What on this island have you seen to suggest that the normal 'laws' of nature have *not* been completely overturned?"
He then attempts to assist in the cavity search, methodically cracking sections of fibrous bark away...
Strength check: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18.
