Ruperta of Hetzau |
That should do it Pai!
Sorry Paxs... be safe, Ruperta will heal you shortly.
Ruperta shudders at the image of Slumper, his beloved, possessed by that demon, and assaulting her.
"You will never have him! I won't let you do it!"
She flies 5' towards the fiend (getting in 30' range) and unleash a barrage of bolts against him.

Our Mysterious Benefactor |
Corbyn's invisible blade cuts deep, while Slumper and Thrak bash, bite, slash and claw into the devil.
"Pathetic mortals!" Screams one head.
"Insignificant scum!" screams another.
"Mewling bastards!" screams the third.
"Know this: You may have cast me back into Hell, but I will claw my way back and I will make war upon you, your children and your children's children! You shall never be safe! Fear meeeeeee..." The worm head cries as it disappears in a flash of hellfire and brimstone, cast back into the pit where it came.
The Grey Maidens, their postures showing a mix of defeat and disgust, sheath their swords. The lead one removes her helmet, revealing a beautiful woman disfigured by a scar that cuts across one eye through her nose and ends just above the opposite corner of her mouth. She nods to each of you and speaks, "My name is Carrin Bostov. I am acting Captain of the Queen's Guard. I offer you my surrender. Now, please, can one of you tell me what the hell just happened?"
Ruperta of Hetzau |
Ruperta flies back to Slumper's arms, and smiles mischievously.
"You know... hear him talking about our children has made me think... after we defeat Illeosa, that is something I would like. That way our strong beautiful son may defeat him again and again."
Still holding to Slumper she turns to Carrin.
"The evil that occupied the Crimson Throne have deserted it, and a new Dawn for Korvosa is about to start. I hope you are ready to abandon the evil ways that caused so much dead and sorrow, and you are willing to redeem yourselves by helping the people of the city. The seneschal was a devil in disguise, and the "Queen" was but a magical puppet. And the real Queen has escaped, for now, but we will find her and make her pay for her crimes. So, are you willing to redeem yourselves? Are you ready to help and love the people, instead of harming and hating? Nothing would please me more than see you all redeemed, and transformed in a force for good."
Diplomacy Roll: 1d20 + 20 ⇒ (12) + 20 = 32
Our Mysterious Benefactor |
The Grey Maiden captain shakes her head. "Listen, I don't know much about this city, but I know we're not going to be welcomed with open arms. I guess we're willing to help, but... I doubt the people are going to welcome us." Carrin scratches her chin. Then she pulls a slip of paper out of her armor. "The... Queen, or whatever it was, left this behind this morning. I was going to give it back to her, but... She's dead. Or dissolved. Or I don't know. I guess there's no harm giving this to you." She hands over a small map drawn in a precise hand.
Ruperta of Hetzau |
"You are right, the people will despise you, hurt you and chastise you. And if you want to attune for your actions, you will accept it and win back their trust the hard way."
Pai Kromnite |
Pai nods at Ruperta's sage advice. "Did the queen say anything about this map? She knew we were coming...did she leave this as a trap, I wonder? Maybe we can cast some spells and divine more knowledge about it," Pai suggests, scratching her chin.
any Knowledge skills help here, DM?
Our Mysterious Benefactor |
Knowledge Geography, Arcana and History might be of use.
Carrin shrugs. "She left it behind this morning when she came out here. It fell from her pocket. Didn't look intentional."
Ruperta of Hetzau |
Ruperta smiles to Slumper.
"Thanks for the compliment, and in any case they would be lovely goblins. The city is not safe, as Illeosa wants to sacrifice everybody in it in her mad quest for power. But now we have a clue where she might be, and she won't be able to avoid us forever. But today it will be a day of celebration! Carrin, please make your maidens drop their weapons and masks, and make them announce that Korvosa is free from the evil queen tyranny! Let everybody know that Korvosa is free! Let everybody celebrate liberty!"
Our Mysterious Benefactor |
History: The name Sorshen triggers a memory: a listing of the Runelords, great wizards and rulers of the lands in the Thassalonian Empire. Sorshen was the Runelord of Lust, a beautiful woman who was also cruel and terrible in her rule.
Arcana: The Sunken Queen... You recall it is a ruin of Thassalonian times, a strange pyramidal structure in the swamps known as the Mushfens. It's a famous landmark, but getting to it is difficult due to the constantly shifting waterways on the fens. If you had some sort of depiction, or something from there, it might make teleporting there possible!
Carrin sighs deeply and issues the orders. The Maidens obey, removing their sword belts and helmets. Each woman is stunningly beautiful, but their beauty is marred by a scar on their face.
Ruperta of Hetzau |
Ruperta goes and hugs each of the woman.
"I am happy you come back to us! People will be hard on you, but in time they will learn to love your true selves, as you yourselves will do. Remember, protect the innocent, defend the people, cherish freedom."
She makes an effort to show the burn scar (from the cinderlands) and her cut mark (from the fight in the plague central) to the woman.
Our Mysterious Benefactor |
Sounds of alarm and battle ring from the city. Across the City Grey Maidens and rioters clash, with a few Erinyes adding to the mix. There is anarchy in the streets! You aid where you can, convincing more Maidens to give up their arms or forcibly making them if need arises. Finally, toward dusk, you find Marshall Croft, Vencarlo Orsini and Grau in a square near the northern quadrant of the city, giving a speech to the cheering crowds.
The revolution is not over. But it is going in your favor.
Our Mysterious Benefactor |
There is a cheer of triumph as the cry that the Queen has fled goes up. Marshall Croft gestures for you to join them near the makeshift stage and finally, unable to hear over the crowd, ducks into a nearby shop that has been looted by the crowds.
"What's happened? Where is Illeosa?"
Ruperta of Hetzau |
Ruperta hugs Cressida Kroft.
"She left a simulacrum behind, which we have destroyed. She went out of the city, trying to do a ritual sacrificing the city for eternal life. We need to follow, and stop, her once and for all. But at least the city is free."
Our Mysterious Benefactor |
"She's fled to do what!?! What do you mean, sacrificing the city? Where's she gone?" Marshall Croft looks confused and alarmed.
Ruperta of Hetzau |
"We think she will try to do a ritual in an old ruin. But don't worry about it, as we will prevent her from succeeding. We need to focus on the issue at hand, which is to finish freeing the city, and making it sure for the people."
Our Mysterious Benefactor |
Cressida shakes her head, but Orsini leans in. "I know these locations. I have a book written by a Pathfinder from a few decades ago that refer to these names. I will retrieve it and meet you back at the hideout." He nods to Grau and together they move off into the crowd.
Croft shakes her head. "At the moment, the revolt is winning. The Queen's forces have withdrawn to the Castle and word is they're fortifying for a siege. We have the city, but taking the Castle may involve a protracted struggle. At the moment, though, the City is ours!"
Our Mysterious Benefactor |
Croft nods, but her face is set. "I will rest far easier when the Queen is brought to justice. Now, let's get you back to the headquarters." Croft nods to some nearby fighters and indicates that she'll be back. She escorts you back to the Pharasmin catacombs. On the way, you can see that fires burn here and there as citizens organize bucket brigades to put them out. Bodies of both citizens and Grey Maidens are piled in heaps, awaiting disposal. Ragpickers move through the corpse piles, looting what they can from the Maidens.
Once back, you are offered food and drink. There are a few injured fighters here, being overseen by the Pharasmin priests. After a while, Orsini arrives, carrying a bound volume. "Here it is! I knew I'd heard of it!" He opens the book to a section which details a site called the Sunken Queen. The author did not get to enter it due to a tribe of Boggards which apparently thought it holy. But importantly, there is a fairly well done sketch depicting a pyramid, half tilting to the side, with the figure of a beautiful naked woman perpendicular to the base, nearly as tall as the structure itself.
Pai Kromnite |
Oooo, that is really cool! Spooky...
Pai nods her head. "Well, that's certainly a creepy space. And I prefer to keep my naked people closer to my size, thank you very much."
She turns to Pax. "Do you think you can teleport us there? It might be wise to head out tomorrow at full strength..."
Our Mysterious Benefactor |
The fat mage had a staff of evocation (32 charges); bracers of armor +4, handy haversack, headband of vast intelligence +4, necklace of adaptation, ring of protection +2, ring of keys (opens all physical locks in the castle, unless a specific lock’s description says otherwise). The fake queen had a +1 returning dagger, headband of alluring charisma +2, gloves of incredible dexterity +2, ring of protection +2, extravagant royal gown worth 2,500 gp, crown (nonmagical duplicate of the Crown
of Fangs) worth 5,000 gp.
Pai Kromnite |
Pai could use the staff and the bracers, if we do not have time to sell anything and re-equip, which I am getting the feeling is probably the case. Could the eidolon wear bracers? Pai has Mage Armor most of the time anyway, so the bracers would be a bit of overkill.
Our Mysterious Benefactor |
Not rushing you, but I wanted to get the last chapter started!
Armed with a pretty decent description and an accurate drawing, you gather around Paxs, who murmurs a few words of arcana and suddenly you feel the there/not-there feeling of teleportation! When the scene clears, you see a strange sight. Surrounded by a grove of primeval mangroves and draped in immense sheets of moss and vines, the horns of the Sunken Queen seem to claw at the sky like the blind talons of an immense monster drowned in an abyss of mud. On the east side of the pyramid, which leans heavily into the marshy slough, one of the three original horns has collapsed, leaving a jagged, metallic stump. On the south side, barely dented by the elements and millennia of neglect, is a giant relief of a standing, naked woman, her lean, idealized figure immersed in murky water up to the knees.
The only entrance you can see consists of stairs going down into a submerged chamber!
Our Mysterious Benefactor |
Pai, there does appear to a section of the wall, not far above the water line that appears to have an illusory aura about it.
Pai Kromnite |
Pai points out to the others what she gleaned. "Look, over there! I can't be sure what that is, but there is illusion magic there. It might be an entrance, or it could be a trap, I can't be sure. All I know is we need to be careful, but that might be a good place to start."
Our Mysterious Benefactor |
Corbyn carefully climbs to the spot indicated and begins to examine. He's able to determine three things:
1. It seems to be an illusory wall covering some sort of entrance.
2. There doesn't appear to be any traps.
3. There does appear to be a guard... as a boggard lets out a mighty croak and attacks him! ATTACK!: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (1) + 18 = 19 Unfortunately, Corbyn is ready for anything and manages to dodge out of the way of the frogman's clumsy attack!

Round 1:

Pai, Corbyn, Paxs, Thrak and Slumper are up first! The boggard appears to be half in and half out of a solid wall!
