Map and Handouts

Underwater Combat:

Movement: Creatures with a swim speed can use it to move freely underwater. Creatures without a swim speed who succeed at a Swim check can move up to a quarter of their speed as a move action or half of their speed as a full-round action. The DC of this check is 10 unless otherwise stated. If the creature has a surface to walk along, such as the bottom of a body of water, it can move at half speed without a check.

Melee Attacks: Natural attacks or attacks with bludgeoning and slashing weapons take a –2 penalty and deal half damage. Attacks that deal piercing damage don’t take these penalties.

Ranged Attacks: Thrown weapons are completely ineffective underwater. Attacks with ranged weapons except underwater crossbows (Pathfinder RPG Ultimate Equipment 17) take a –2 penalty on attack rolls for every 5 feet of water they pass through, in addition to the normal penalties
from range.

Spellcasting: A creature that cannot breathe water must succeed at a concentration check (DC = 15 + spell level) to cast a spell underwater.

Fire: Nonmagical fire (including alchemist’s fire) does not burn underwater. Spells and spell-like abilities with the fire descriptor
are not effective underwater unless the caster succeeds at a caster level check (DC = 20 + spell level). If the check is successful, the spell produces a bubble of steam instead of its usual effect but otherwise functions as described. A supernatural fire effect is not
effective underwater unless its description states otherwise.

Freedom of Movement: The spell freedom of movement negates the penalty on melee attack rolls with bludgeoning and slashing weapons and allows creatures to move freely in all directions as if they had a swim speed equal to their base speed. Such creatures automatically succeed at all Swim checks.

Invisibility: An invisible creature displaces water and leaves a visible, body-shaped absence of water where it is located. The creature gains concealment (20% miss chance) rather than total concealment (50% miss chance).

The entrance to the nautilus shell is a circular opening about 40 feet in diameter. Thick rows of purple coral reef line the inside of the shell, covered with a riot of colorful plants and fish. Delicate screen walls of coral sprout from these reefs and stretch from the floor to the ceiling of the shell, creating hallways and rooms through which water flows. Each screen is overwhelmingly detailed, filled with fractal patterns and colorful murals depicting sea creatures and forgotten events. Near the back of the room, visible through several layers of screens, is a mound of coral with a pearly throne seated at its pinnacle. The ceiling rise to 30 feet and it's dimly lit here.

No traps are found and other than small aquatic life, no other life (or threats) is around. Rowanna only detects magic auras around the throne an overwhelming conjuration effect.

Each of the coral screens forms a 30-foot wall, going from floor to ceiling dividing the shell into rooms. The screens measuring less than one inch thick and are filled with thousands of holes, which form geometric patterns and murals. The screen walls appear to be incredibly fragile. The coral murals seem badly damaged from centuries of conflict,
and are covered with a dizzying display of iconography and complex symbols.

The Throne rests near the back of this innermost room. It is a massive nacre chair that looks big enough to seat a troll or giant. As a part of
Riam’s shell, the throne’s roots extend through the coral and connect with the floor below.

Okay this is a success based mechanic

For every five minutes spent examining the murals, you may each
attempt one action to decipher the hidden story depicted within the murals.

You may use a variety of skills and abilities to assist in this process. 1)Succeeding at a DC 24 Knowledge (planes or religion) check interprets a symbol and gains a success point. 2) Succeeding at a DC 25 Disable Device check or a relevant DC 20 Craft check is able to repair a broken piece of the mural and learn something new, gaining a successes. 3) If you can come up with something out of the box, that may be useful in recreating the story in the murals, let me know and it may count. 4) If you are able to comprehend Aquan (speak, Ioun stone, comprehend language, tongues or similar)you can spend time translating mural messages and gain a success point without making a check. 5) A mending spell grants one success and a make whole spell grants two successes.

We'll run it in 5 minute rounds and I'll reveal what is learned as you go along. And to speed things along, you may post multiple checks and indicated what your desired time commitment is. For example, only interested in 5,10 minutes worth, all the way up to unlimited to know the whole story. At whatever point the majority says stop, we'll end there and move on.

Well, from what I understand, there's a considerable amount of text here in addition to imagery here right? Enough for people who understand Aquan to have an edge. Nachts doesn't understand Aquan and never will, but he might be able to get an exact copy of whatever is written here for people back at the lodge, something they might be able to use in conjunction with our report for experts to understand all of this. You spend around 15 minutes studying the murals and reconstructing them as well. Thunderhoof casts mending on certain broken parts; while Aelwynd begins fixing parts the old fashion way with tools and care. Nachts makes use of scrivener's chant to do some transcribing for posterity. As Rowanna and Lore begin to read the story that is told here.

And it goes something like this:

Kelizandri, the evil elemental lord of water,
imprisoned Lysianassa, the good elemental lord of water,
inside an artifact called The Gasping Pearl long ago.
Before she was imprisoned, Lysianassa used
her last gasp to breathe into a magical decanter now called
The Breath of Lysianassa. This imbued the artifact with the
power to control the ocean tides.
Lysianassa gave this artifact to a giant nautilus
named Riam, who fled with it. Nine brine dragon wyrms
eventually caught and killed Riam, but his shell was lost
inside the Lambent Bloom. Later, pilgrims of Lysianassa
built a temple in the shell and subsequently used it to inter
their dead.

The murals indicate that The Breath of
Lysianassa is hidden near the center of the shell inside the
mouth of a giant sailfish. Hulking creatures made from
moving coral guard it.

A few more details remain.

Ariana is still up. But I'm not sure she can contribute much other than taking a shot at 3 Craft checks. Do you want to spend 5 more minutes to get the rest of it?

Aelwynd works on and allows you to find out that the throne is called the Throne of Deep Currents and acts as a control platform for the powerful magic provided by The Breath of Lysianassa. Becoming fully attuned to the throne requires an 8-hour ritual and grants control over the ocean currents within 300 miles of the shell. However, if the Breath of Lysianassa is ever freed the throne would lose all its magical properties.

In answer to Ariana's question, Aelwynd speaks up, "I think we should focus on finding the Breath. I know I don't sound much like a pirate right now, giving up on something powerful like the Throne, but from the sounds of it, the Breath was literally the last breath of a good god, and it's here for protection. Perhaps the breath can be used to free the god from imprisonment? I don't really know, but I can tell it's important."

He pauses to look around at the group, making sure he is understood before continuing.

"All that said, I don't think it is a coincidence that 9 brine dragons were hunting for the Breath, and now Razethka, a brine dragon, has been funding expeditions to get here in the Bloom. If Razethka, who we barely know, happens to be an agent of this Kelizandri, it's up to us to move in and really see what all the fuss is about with the Breath. Don't you agree?"

Sure it's a bit of a leap, but those murals were quite revealing. I can't help but wonder what sort of coral guardians are in there...

After we... attune the throne... to our... purposes, we... can look... at this Breath. And perhaps... make a mark that... will... allow us... to come back and... take it... should we need... to. If the... dragon proves to... be... our opponent, taking... it... back to Golarion... might be... in the... best interests... of all. But we... have not... gotten to... that point... yet. I imagine... the dragon will... want... us all... dead... before we leave... to prevent anyone from... finding this conch... should betrayal be... her final motive."

"I agree with Nachts that we should attempt to attune the throne and then learn all we can about the Breath. If it appears that someone will use it for nefarious purpose, there may be a way to attenuate this power to keep out of their hands. In any case, if we are forced into conflict with the dragon, so be it. Shall we continue onward?" Rowanna offers somewhat more enthusiastic than her demeanor thus far.

Lore considers the options... "I wonder whether it is 'smarts' or power of will that would be best to excel at to attune the throne... I am willing to try it..." She walks toward the throne, which most likely dwarfs her. "It IS big..." IF no one objects or stops her, she'll climb up and sit down in it... Eyes wide as she expects something wild to happen.

Not much else to add here. Was there anything the party needed to do to help with the attunement?

Aelwynd listens to everyone's ideas, digesting all he can, then he replies, "I agree we should learn all we can about the Breath, and I think to that end we have succeeded, at least in this room."

He focuses on the throne where Lore is now sitting, and tilts his head quizzically as he comments, "But I don't see the point of attuning ourselves to the Throne. I don't think that will give us any more knowledge. Are we doing it just so we can control the currents? They haven't effected us since we came inside here. Besides, if we end up freeing the Breath, according to what we translated the Throne won't function anymore and having attuned to it will have been a waste of time. I think the way to find out more is to move deeper inside. If I am still the only one that thinks this way, then by all means, attune away."

Can multiple people take part in the attunement? Nachts would probably like to try as well.

With some difficultly Lore climbs up and sits upon the massive throne, she sits there and nothing happens. From what you find in the writings, sitting upon the throne is required in certain steps in the ritual, along with many other very complex steps. From what you can tell the throne would, in the end, attune to one being; but likely help could be used from other in performing the ritual.

Multiple {difficult} knowledge (planes, arcana, and religion) checks each hour.

Seems like you are divided on whether to attune the throne or search for the Breath of Lysianassa at this time. Go ahead and continue to discuss which it will be.

GM:

In regards to the note from Zarta, does this appear to the be time to enact the ritual for which she gave us instructions?

Silver Crusade

Rowanna and Nachts:

Your understanding is the ritual needs to gather power from the artifact and would be more effective using Zarta's ritual once you find the Breath; although theoretically you might be able to draw power from it, using the Throne.

Lore begins to perform the ritual but something is not quite correct in sequencing.

"Upon further reflection, let's find the Breath first. I think we'll have a greater understanding of what we need to do once we witness the thing for ourselves." Rowanna offers after a moment, "I'm also well-versed in arcane, planar, and religious matters, so perhaps I could try sitting on throne once we're truly ready."
