Oh, a Rogue fighting with a wolf? I smell advantage for days. Are we on Round 3?

male

Yes we are at the top of Round 3, Merrum is still circling the stones to cut off escape to the north, Wolfgang is mildly amused by the things going on, but not ready to jump into action, just yet, so you are up. The False Kerak is on his feet, a wolf attacking his legs, he is bleeding, but the injury seems slight.

Though he is somewhat baffled, Preacher, based on their travels, judges that that is his companion's wolf form, and he decides to trust her. He utters a word in a long-forgotten language and calls forth the power of his faith in a radiant flame, aiming to damage the impostor.

The Kerak being attacked by the wolf finally loses his balance and falls to the ground just as Preacher calls down a bright, holy flame from the clear blue sky. Unfortunately the light strikes the ground close to the Kerak as he thrashes around trying to avoid the wolf's bite and misses.

Gah, you fools, He is the imposter, not me. The Kerak on the ground cries

Round 4...

Having prepared a spell, Wolfgang is in a unique position to attack one of the Keraks while now, Merrum appears behind one of the tall stones at the north of the circle.

Kerak tries to hit the other Kerak with his sword, but the man rolls away at the last minute

Wylla, Lilly, Isaiah, and Preacher are now up for the end of round 4

Special Save: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18

Wolfgang feels that this has gone on long enough, and as Merrum pokes his head out from behind a tall stone, the tall dark haired warlock speaks a strange spell aiming for the Kerak on the ground

But the spell does not connect, possibly because the Kerak on the ground is scrambling this way and that trying to get to his feet and away from the wolf

Finally the Kerak on the ground shouts as loud as he can

Alright, alright! I give up, call off the wolf. Please! Don’t let it kill me. I’m not your enemy

And then right before your eyes he changes into an old human man, with thin greasy grey hair, a foul appearance, and ragged cloths

The old man seems visibly shaken by the threats, scrambles to his knees and places his hands together in front of his chest, pleading

Please, please, don’t kill me. I’m not your enemy I swear it. Look, I know what I have done was wrong, but the Tanakov brothers, Sergei and Jorge, they forced me to help them. You’ve got to believe me. My family, back in Baravkovia, lost everything in the uprising, everything. The brothers are descendants of the original Von Uvooullovich family, and fancy themselves as inheritors of an ancient quest of some mystery that I don’t know. They hold the deed to the land my family and my sister’s family work, back home. They learned of this.

He holds out his left hand and shows you a ring, a large gold ring set with two rubies that resemble glowing eyes set in a formless face.

It is a relic that has been in my family for generations. It is a magic ring that grants its wearer the ability to take on the appearance of anyone you’ve ever seen, but it also carries a curse that makes the wearer look like the man you see before you now, and old wretch who was the man who created the ring. I am actually only twenty eight years old. My name is Uri Darvonovik. Our families were on the edge of starvation when the Tanakov brothers approached me, knowing I had been given the cursed ring as my inheritance, and forced me to put it on and help them in their plan to take control of the castle, capturing anyone who might be a threat to their plans and sowing as much confusion as I could here in Pawkatukit. Turn me over to the sheriff if you must, but please, don’t kill me. The brothers have promised me five hundred marks of gold and I intended all along to take the money and return to my village, but they told me that I would not be paid until the mission office of the Solution Society here was closed down for good.

He then turns to the tall half-elven fellow, and begs

Don’t let them kill me, please, I’ve got a wife, her brother, and four children at home that are depending on me for their lives.

Wolfgang seems to be playing with some aether-stuff in his hand. Every once in a while it looks like eyes appear out of the shifting fog. He approaches the old-looking young man.
A sly grin crawls along his face.

"And tell me, are you able to take this ring on and off at will? And if so...could someone else use it?"

Oh yeah. He's got a plan.

male

I cannot. It is a cursed heirloom that was created by one of my ancestors, who worked as a spy for a wicked old king. Someone in the family must keep it, or, we are told, the family line will come to a disastrous end, though no one is ever forced to wear it. We have always kept it safe, and hidden away. Oh, what I would give to be rid of it and the terrible curse it carries.

Kerak's face goes hard as Uri talks about being from Baravkovia. Having fought against them, he wasn't entirely inclined to trust the man's words.

As Uri tells his story, Kerak's face softens, but only for him to frown in though. That these Tanakov brothers sought to get the Solutions Society office closed was interesting - and might be of some help to finding a way for Edmund to help Branhilde. If the blame for the incidents that the so-called Wrecking Crew was accused of could be placed on these Tanakov brothers, along with Uri here, that might absolve the actual members of the Solutions Society and stop the Chapel Hill Lodge from closing.

"Tell me, Uri, why do these Tanakov brothers want the Solutions Society lodge closed?"

male

The old man lies to the side, extending his injured leg on the ground to take pressure off of it, and says to Wolfgang

You want me to help you capture the Tanakov brothers, double-cross them? And what if your plan fails? My family suffers, no, I won’t help you, unless. No, it’ll never work. They are paranoid, delusional at best, but mad as March hares at their worst. They trust no one, and would never agree to a meeting away from the castle. If there was a way to get passed their magic portal, without them knowing, then, yes, maybe, you might ambush them, but I have no idea how many of the orcs of tarule they have at their call, nor what other associates they are hiding below the castle.

When Kerak asks about the brother’s plans, Uri shrugs, Who can possibly know. At first I thought they intended to move into Pawkatukit, take up here as small time thugs, you know the usual highway robbery, extortion, and selling people across the river into Tarule, but then I heard about this ancestor of theirs, some woman buried below the castle. They talk about her as if she is the key to some greater power, or perhaps a legendary treasure, but they keep many secrets. I can only suspect that with the Society’s Hall closed here, and so many of their best people headed west to deal with some rising danger in the Village of Pizkoalut, they would not have anything standing in the way of any plans they may have. There is also the rumor that the brothers have a history that involves the gnome who goes by the name of Nickels, and is a trainer in the Chapel Hill Hall.

male

The man turns his head toward Isaiah, and nods, saying

Yes, I have been impersonating different people that, well…

He looks down at the ground, in shame, and goes on people who the brothers have managed to capture when they were alone and away from the village proper. The kidnapped Kerry Wollem two weeks ago. Her family left for Sea Port to purchase wool and make arrangements for the raw materials to be turned into cloth. Kerry’s mother and father, and older brother are all tailors, but they left her home to take care of the home, and, and it was easy for me to send her a message that the girl Holly wanted to meet her by the ruins on the Ribbon Tree Hilltop, northeast of town. I have been impersonating her in hopes of trying to convince Holly Hulbur to do the same, but it has been more difficult to get her to leave her home after dark. The elven woman is a woman I used to know in Palicadia. As far as I know she is safe and sound far away to the north. And yes, I have been impersonating Caldwell since they were able to capture him over a month ago. When the regular agents of the Chapel Hill hall were sent west, the brothers gave me instructions to approach the Solution Society, knowing they would take the requested job, and send the wrecking crew to the castle. They believed that capturing the wrecking crew would be easy, and after getting rid of them, the hall would be under orders to close down due to lack of a current team.

Wolfgang:
The man is probably referring to the “Vampire” entombed below Castel Caldwell, the “woman” the ghost of the Kobold told you about

When Wolfgang asks about the gnome, the man turns to him and says

I imagine he is still in the hall on the hill. That’s where he and the dwarven woman, Branhilde, live.

Wylla, Wolfgang, and Isaiah:
You three, though not formally assigned to the "Wrecking Crew" were originally sent to warn them of the dangers of Castle Caldwell - after finding a few of them, you did help them escape the castle, but what has become of them is anybody's guess

The Man looks at Kerak and says

I think so. I haven't heard they returned from the castle. And, no, Branhilde, she's a very smart woman, is not complicit in the brother's plans, in fact I sort of feel bad for her. She has been trying so hard to keep her Hall open, and well, she's just been handed the worst string of luck, mostly my fault I suppose, as a person could have.

Overhearing the man’s comments to the fellow Uri takes as a fellow countryman, Uri shakes his head and says,

No, you misunderstand. When I said the brothers had a history with the gnome at the Chapel Hill Hall, I didn’t mean it was a pleasant relationship. In fact, if I understand the brothers’ often bizarre and angry rants about this man, who they never called by name, only referring to him as the red gnome, he was responsible for thwarting their plans in the past, more than a few times, apparently.

Too many questions to remain in Wolf form. Plus she can shift one more time before a short rest.

Lilly's lupine outline blurs and shifts and in a moment the girl stands before you again. I have a few question of my own before we depart. How you answer might allow you to keep that finger with the ring. I want you t know that right now I am in favor of cutting it off and seeing what you really look like. You can start by shifting into that visage now so that we are familiar with it. She waits expectantly. She removes her quite sharp looking Scimitar as an encouragement.

Next I want to know where you heard the druid's name that you pretended to be. And I want to know where she is. If you've hurt her, of if she has come to harm by your actions it will not go well for you.

Before leaving the area Lilly asks for a short rest in the grove so she can both check it out to make sure all is well and to recover the expended use of her shifting power.

male

When the group begins to shuffle around, ready to depart, making it clear that the man is a prisoner and his behavior is directly related to his wellbeing, he stands slowly, keeping his arms wide and not making any sudden movements.

When Lilly unfolds into her regular appearance, the man is somewhat startled, and curses under his breath, That explains a lot.

He then listens to her questions, and his eyes begin to fill with water as he tries to explain as best he can

I was never a wealthy man. I can’t make you believe me, but, I, I don’t really know what I look like. We never owned a mirror, and I might have seen my reflection once or twice in a pool of water, but I can’t recall the details. It’s the truth I swear. I put the ring to use because I wanted to try and make a better life for my family, but nothing, nothing I’ve done has made me feel better about my choices. I deserve whatever is in store for me.

When Lilly asks about the druid, he takes a moments to compose himself, and then says, I know her name from the journal inside the house, and from talking with others in Pawkatukit. I know she is a Maetaur woman, but I didn’t expect you would know her. I’ve tried to get to know everyone in this town, and I had never seen any of you before, so my choice was to take the form of a druid woman I know, and hope the bluff would work. Caitriann is someone I’ve never met, she has been away from Pawkatukit, I believe for almost a month, and may have run into trouble investigating something happening in the forest southwest of here. I don’t know what it is exactly, but she mentions a few things in her journal. If you want to take a moment to rest in the house, it is safe, and well stocked with food. I used her home as a place to keep captives until the brothers could send tafganor her at night to collect them. All in all we captured three people from Pawkatukit, two who lived alone and have not been missed yet, and the girl, Kerry, all are still prisoners in the dungeons of Castle Caldwell. Of the two besides Kerry, there is a man, his name is Alnor Webber, and he is skilled in alchemy, and the other is Jordan Grall, an old soldier who knows many of the Kobolds who live along the river. I’m not sure I know exactly why the brothers are keeping those men, when they have sold many travelers they have taken from the road into slavery in Tarule, but I hate to think what they might be doing to that poor girl.

Then your first mistake was to assume the druid was human. but she does not go into further detail about Caitriann's race. I will go and at least look over the journal. So when will tafganor come again? Would it be worth setting up an ambush for him?

Anyone else for removing the ring, even if it means removing the finger? I would never consider letting this guy go with the ring.

male

Though Lilly might not have much exposure to the workings of the Solution Society, others, Wolfgang, Wylla, and Isaiah, would probably suspect that the Hall might have resources that can be used to remove the ring without causing the man harm.

And, aye, though I've no great aversion to taking off the ring, no matter the method, I admit that there are others who might be able to take off one without the other. He has given us his parole, and with so many of us, the mere power of changing shape does not seem enough threat to warrant an action that will be...looked at by the Society in so dark a light. The small group of new acquaintances moves the man, roughly, toward Caitrian’s house, binding his arms behind him as they go.

Once inside, they find a modest, but comfortable little home comprised of a main room, with a small table, and three low stools, a small fireplace, where a pot hangs on an articulated spit, mounted to floor which allows the pot to be swung into the fire and pulled away for easy access to what’s inside.

The walls are hung with needlepoint, and cross stitch crafts, shadow boxes with wooden crafts, and there are two high shelves with small carvings, silver bells, and other bric-a-brac. Off to the left is a curtain hanging in a wide doorway, leading to another part of the small home.

On the table there is a blue felt bound journal, the pages are thick, expensive paper, and Lilly begins to flip through it.

It would take a while, a few hours perhaps, to read the journal in complete, but Lilly flips to the last entry, to get some idea of what the druid Caitriann might have been looking into.

Here she finds a curious entry

Lilly:
I have promised Marolyn that I would investigate the strange black fortress under construction to the southwest, but again I have delayed. Now I don’t know if it is worth my efforts to travel to the warren first to see if she has any news of her own. I think tomorrow I will set out for Wahanthiop Springs, it is the time of year for the Halionawawi to be camping there, and once I have exchanged good news with their elders I will head to the Limecracker hovel. I must travel to see this black fortress for myself, and I only hope it is not what I fear it is.

The Party is careful of the place, respectful of Caitrainn’s little home, and sit on the floor or on the stools to take a moment to check their packs, eat a little bit of food, and down a bit of drink.

After everyone has had a short rest, the group is sure to tidy up the little home, leaving it as neat and clean as when they found it, and then sets off along the marked trail which leads back into the village of Pawkatukit.

The trail at the fork leads northeast, back to the center of the village and becomes a small, but well beaten down dirt road, then a paved road that comes to the cross street of the center of town. From here, the party turns left, going west, toward Chapel Hill, and the Hall of the Solution Society.

I hope the boards are now a little more stable and we can all get back to our games. :) Question about that last journal entry: Was it dated/ how many days back was it made?

Before the group leaves the home Lilly offers This journal has an interesting entry that provides some clues as to what the druid Caitriann has recently been up to. It speaks of a strange black fortress under construction to the southwest.

Pawkatukit, Harrispania

– a village, or perhaps small town even, on the north bank of the Deer Creek Falls River, three miles east of Dear Creek Falls, twelve miles west of Seaport, a cottage in a glade south of the Chapel Hill

Day 6, afternoon, It is the middle of Spring. The month of Aukonum, in the Dwarven calendar, The period of Iptharuem in the druidic calendar, four days before the mid-spring festival of Nalathday (Mayday on earth)

Lilly shows the journal to the others, and as they all move in close to take a look, she tries to decipher the druids peculiar notations in the margin.

After a moment it occurs to her that Caitrainn kept track of the days by noting, using a druidic script, the current phases of the world’s three moons and the eighth sectioning of the solar year. It is a complex notation. She studies the notation for a moment longer and then deduces that the last entry was made five weeks ago, in the druidic season of Navuode, which is an old Maetaur word meaning, “to leave the cold and enter the warmth.”

Druidic periods of the year:
The Maetaur divide the solar year into eight “seasons” divided by the four turning points in the measure of the length of the day, (the two equinoxes and the two solstices). These eight periods are identified by prefixes and descriptive words that have no direct translation but are more often represented by symbols with complex meanings. Four of the periods are “Ip” which means to enter, while the other four are “Na” which is to leave, or exit. The eight periods are represented by symbols, which when spoken are sounded, Ipfinnon (beginning of winter) Navuode (leaving winter), Iptharuem (beginning of spring), Nalath (leaving spring), Ipsulth (beginning summer), Naroose (leaving summer), Ipwhein (entering fall), Narulle (leaving fall). Each season is marked at its beginning by the name of the solstice or equinox, and is called by the “Ip” symbol – day, so the winter solstice is Ipfinnonday, while the spring equinox is Iptharuemday.

Before leaving the home.

Looking at the journal, Kerak says, "Interesting. Once we deal with these gangsters, we should see about tracking her down - as was our original purpose. How long has she been gone - and who is...Marolyn?"
