I would suggest that Natalya, Caithan and Setebo form up on in front of and one either side of the entrance to the tunnel, that way all three can attack whatever tries to emerge.

When i read it the first time i gathered that Setebo was going into the tunnel, moving around then getting jumped by two monsters. From Setebo's i read it as he threw a spear then retreated back into a chamber which he came from. I thought that it was a chamber between the one where the party is waiting and the one where the former captain (and his buddy) was waiting. And that's where Natalyah shows up when she hears Setebo fighting. Which is why i wrote the following in my earlier posts:

Natalyah Melethiell wrote:

"The lights!", she barks at Helga and makes her way down into the tunnel with her blades drawn.
Natalyah Melethiell wrote:
Natalyah arrives and sees Setebo standing with his sword ready. "Don't just stand there, what is it?" she barks.

Now that i reread i notice that my assumtions are wrong and that Setebo just came out of the tunnel into the cavern where we are all waiting, which would nullify my two previous posts, since Natalyah hasn't moved.

The "Total defence" thing has both a "in character" motivation and a metagame motivation.

In character reasoning: In my description in Natalyah's profile i write that she is more of a planner than than a "take action" kind of person. More catious than throwing caution to the wind and charge in. I've done a poor job of playing this aspect so i'm trying to play her up as more controlled in combat. The idea is to have her be ready for her foes attack, evade it then strike out quickly with to slashes in return.

Metagame reasoning: Natalyah doesn't do that much damage. If she is going to have a chance to make a noticable impact she's going to have to attack with both her blades, which i can't do if have to move up to my target (more than 5ft). So i figure that instead of running up and making a small cut i let the enemy come to me, decrease Natalyah's chances of getting hit by taking the total defence action and the next round return fire with a double attack.

I didn't realize that Natalyah was adjecent to the captain and could deliver two strikes in the first round. I figured that being ready she would see the captain and be able to react before he could move up adjacent to her.

Don't know if anything i wrote makes any sense.

I can understand the reasoning behind the total defence when she has to move and I should have been more clear about the situation. All the Fighting types can attack at full ability this round.

I really have to find a good cavern mapping programme.

OLOB if you can still edit you might want to. As things were you were flanking the passage opening with the captain. By stepping into the passage you loose flank and foul Rollo's attack while making the Capt strike through partial cover with the spear.

At least I think that is how things are set up.

Maptool? Free? Is awesome?

Sorry OLOB the nice lady had "caster" written all over her. Casters are like red flags to barbarians and monks, couldn't resist.

No problem :) It's probably the right thing to do as well. It's Natalyah that's angry (as usual), not me :)

Sorry for my absence. There must have been no new posts shown on the thread for me for at least 10 days. I never checked - until today - as I was busy.
Too much reliance on technology - the campaign tab is useful to check if there are new posts - but you get lazy if it shows none.

The forums have been wacky lately. I expect they will become more and more sane as time goes on but right now one needs to keep a close eye on things.

Getting crowded in here. 2 flaming spheres, 4 ghouls, 1 LOB, 1 Captain, 1 Rollo and 1 me!

Just keep moving around odds are you'll hit something, as the go-go dancer said to the archbishop.

DM. Nice workaround with the miss chance. Have to remember that one for other AOE spells interacting with Darkness in a map free fight.

I'm off on holiday until Friday night. I will likely not read anything until then

Before i forget again. I will be busy thursday-sunday this week and my posts will be scarce, if not non existent, until monday.

Grand Lodge

I'm back. Arrived Friday night but spend yesterday at a CON here in Kent advertising DwarvenForge and Pathfinder.
My very first TPK with a group of four new players. One fight just went wrong - the dice gods haven't been with the players. But they left laughing.
I don't think I scared them off. Mist of Mwangi gone wrong.

I've had a really s$&+ty day and not much in the mood for anything in character related. So don't wait for an update from me right now. Keep the game rolling and assume that Natalyah goes along with everything and she will be back to her dour self shortly.

Sorry Goat-man. Hope today is better.

Note shameless meta-gaming:

Hmmmm. So what do we know?
1. The spell/darkness effect is nonstandard. Amisi ID it as Darkness but per that spells description Darkvision users can see in a Darkness spell.
Darkness spell wrote:
"Creatures with darkvision can see in an area of dim light or darkness without penalty."

In order to block Darkvision you need Deeper Darkness or a fog/cloud spell. If the ID was corect and Mr. Wellard is playing the Darkness blocks Darkvision (like it did in 3.5?) then we are looking at 1 min/level duration and plenty of first level slots/cheap wand/scrolls.

This argues that we should rush the ghoul once we run out of Flaming sphere spells they will have 50% concealment but so will we. See in darkness is a rather rare ability and very rare in something like ghouls.

2. We are facing a cleric. Other things/classes can channel energy but at our levels a cleric is far more likely. (Note this could also be a custom variant ghoul made for the AP in which case all bets are off.) Assuming cleric is correct then the maximum level we are looking at (barring really odd feat/multiclassing) is 4th. At 5th the channel is 3d6. A 4th level cleric does not have 3rd level spells which is another argument against Deeper Darkness.

3. The DC for a channel is (10+ half cleric level+ Charisma mod). In this case the DC is 13. So that means (half cleric level + Charisma mod)=3. Looks like a 4th level cleric with a +1 Cha mod. If this is correct we are looking at one more channel.

Their resources. If my estimate of a 4th level cleric is correct then she has at most 3 second level spells left, one of which is domain, and 5 first level, including domain. Possibly one less 2nd level if her WIS less than 16. As I am assuming she cast the [i]Darkness[/1] as a spell. We know she has at least a 12 wis so she gets the bonus 1st level spell.

Tactical position As of when the lights went our we were facing 3 foes. OLOB and the Capt'n killed one, and one 'perished in fire' when a sphere hit it. That means the Hag might be alone in there. Which is good. There are also 2 other ways out of this cave, which is bad. She might have reinforcements or she could simply run.

Options Rush her. We likely have her outnumbered and once we locate her we largely negate the Darkness. The total concealment will work both ways making the fight a bloodsoaked comedy of errors.
We do have another advantage though. Rollo. Rollo has scent. Scent pinpoints the target as soon as they are w/i 5' and gives direction with a move action. Dosing Rollo with a cure pot to survive the neg energy and sending him in to find the hag while we follow might be an effective plan.

Thoughts?

Grand Lodge

Amisi tries to smoke her out. Follow her screams - or mine. You could send the dog after me as guard / being more prepared in darkness with the scent.

on a different note - started to post this on my game threads.
All

Sorry - I should have posted here that I would be away for the weekend. It was hectic to get everything sorted last minute - and I admit I got sidetracked in some heated general discussions on the PFS boards.

The posting in the next days will be slow. We had a car accident on the way to Crispy Con. Luckily nobody hurt and we still made it with a few hours delay and missing the social at the evening before.
But the car is a likely write-off and I will have to get a few bits sorted out quickly now. Like a replacement and financing.
Having my own business and most money invested there complicates it. I need to check out if the new car should be a company car or not.

Re ring and amulet. Any thoughts on who to give them to?

This IS the internet you know ... Alegedly human Expert (IT) 5/Ninja 3/Witch 7

Amulet to boost AC of someone who gets in a fight (Nat, Setebo, or Caith). Ring to whoever can make the most use of it.

re ring and amulet.

So the amulet to a frontline fighter and the ring to a good swimmer.

Well Setebo has the best swim at +8 giving him the ring would allow the furry one to play lifeguard at least semi-effectively.

As to the amulet the AC's and hp's of the front line are:
Capt 18ac 29hp
OLOB 17ac 28hp
me 15ac 32hp

So OLOB?

Hmmm magic/unusual item run down. lets see what folks have.

Amisi: Potion of CLW. Smokestick. Wand of Mirror Images (8). Wand of Vampiric touch (8). MW dagger.

Atzi: Potion of CLW. Potion of Lesser Restoration. Antitoxin. MW Studded leather. +1 Darkwood buckler.

Caithan: 2 Potions of CLW. Potion of Water Walking. Tanglefoot bag. Oil

Helga: 3 Potions of CLW. Potion of Lesser Restoration. Alchemist's fire. Antitoxin. Tanglefoot bag. +1 Scimitar. 2 oil

Natalya: Potion of CLW. Tanglefoot bag. MW shortsword. MW cold iron starknife. +1 dagger.

Setebo: Potion of CLW. Potion of Water Breathing. Smokestick. oil

Proposals and thoughts.

Natalya has 2 MW and 1 magic weapons. You fight Magic dagger and MW short sword right? So maybe transfer the star knife to Setebo? Given the amount of javelins he goes through I expect it will see more use.

Caithan fights MW great sword right? Wondering if you want to go sword and shield and trade Helga for the +1 scimitar. Would the loss of damage be worth the danger of DR?

Helga if you do not swap with the Capt do you think you might want one of the savages light wooden shields? We have plenty.

Amisi I just realized your wand of Vampire touch hits like a greatsword. 1d6/2caster levels min caster level 5 for a 3rd level spell means 2d6 touch attack. Ow!

Atzi I think you are not figuring the magic darkwood shield in your ac. I could be wrong though.

Setebo remember to add a light wooden shield, useful when you are not using the long spear and a free action to drop in rage.

AC13 HP 12/12 Init + 2 Pass Percept + 3 Pass Insight + 1 Saves:*Str:+5 *Dex:+4 Con:+2 Int:+0 Wis:+1 Cha:-1

Overall loss of damage would be too much. Dr not withstanding Caithan can probably just punch right through it anyway.

Ideally Caithan would eventually like to invest in a reach weapon and armor spikes. With Setebo and OLoB being much more aggressive in your face types Caitahn can do more zoning/screening.

Also I think the AC's are off since someone is supposed to have the heavier armor and Caithan has the masterwork BP.

Not sure about that. Setebo went back to his studded leather after the cannibal raid. I think you are the only one who can wear the heavy banded mail. Barbarians and rangers do not do heavy armor. I see a boom in the breastplate industry once we get back to civilization.

Sigh... hate to loose the 10' of movement but I think anyhing better than a MW agile breastplate is out of reach for some time.

Not a problem. Natalyah only has the star knife because nobody else wanted it. I think she even threw it at the feet of Amisi once when she was irritated :)

Helga isn't bothered about retaining the +1 scimitar, if someone else wants to use it they are welcome to it!

Unless there is opposition Setebo will take the Ring of swimming and the amulet at least for now.Not sure how to ask OLOB for the starknife but she could notice Setebo drooling over it sometime.

Same with the scimitar, Setebo would happily trade his sawtooth saber for it. But that would give S perhaps too much a share of the magic?

Female / Female Human: Jambala Jaeg Descendent) and Deinonychus Saurian Shaman LVL 4

I'm not sure what all magic items we gained thus far, but I can hold out for something that will fit Atzi better. As much as the scimitar would be nice its not realistic. Not for me, I would be taking an item that would be more useful to someone with more attack power and thus limiting us as a whole. Just the way I play, not a shot at anyone, only explaining why I haven't been overly concerned about magic items. Because I don't think anything realisitc has come along for Atzi so I rather we all remain stronger as a whole then asking for an item that is only slightly useful for Atzi.

If we run into something that up's dexterity in the future, or str I may go for it as her spells have been falling on the blank Touch so higher stats is what I need to focus on, or items that up her magical abilities. So long as I don't clash with Amisi, because I still do have a companion to back me up lol. ;)

If we don't have any of those then I won't be asking for anything. ;) Except for a bit of the gold share for the next city comes up lol! :)

This IS the internet you know ... Alegedly human Expert (IT) 5/Ninja 3/Witch 7

Helga will happily give the scimitar to Setebo if he wants it, as no-one else has put their hand up for it...and I agree, it's best in the hands of someone who can make good use of it.

Atzi: The spreadsheet is up to date as to magic gear. Link in my alias.

To all: Note to all I consider all the gear Setebo is using as borrowed. I am not a huge fan of sharing out things to the copper in any case. Once we get mack to civilization I expect some extensive gear adjusting to occur.

So one sawtooth saber swapped for the +1 scimitar.

Say it isn't so Atzi.. <Setebo breaks down in tears>

Man real life has a great deal to answer for. Any chance this is a temp thing or are you going for good?

If it is for good then good luck. You added significant enjoyment to the game.

Dammit... Now Setebo has only seen one of the active characters naked. Must try harder. :7)

Okay revision... My presence will be reduced significantly for now. My wife is pregnant and very emotional, for those who have had kids we know how hormones can swing~ Know what I mean. I will be around just not posting as often. I've removed myself from games that are of less priority or dead...

Good luck with the pregnancy, I hope it all goes OK - is it your first?

Good luck and sorry that I'm not as frequent here either. Wanted a weekend off and then felt guilty not have posted in any campaign - so avoided it for another day ...

still here, half dead from a stomach bug, sorry for lack of posts. Wellard. You can either DMNPC me or say Atzi got distracted by the derelict ship sitting in the area where the water has receeded. Up to you boss whatever is easier on you~

I don't know how much I will be able to post during the easter holiday, so as a general rule of thumb: DM Natalyah if she's holding up the game.

OK Folks I'm going away to Games Expo UK tonight and won't be back until Monday Evening my time. Playing 4 PFS games over the three days (and some Paranoia) so I won't be without my Pathfinder fix

Have fun!
