Down below decks, Dingus catches a glimmer of light from the strange blue gem as he hides it in dark recess. Surely it is no mundane gem.

Jim can sense Dibbets' simmering disapproval, but avoids the halfling's wrath for the moment. Kaul just drools more than usual and focuses on the reassuring simplicity of his heavy axe. The rescued crew after eating their fill, clean up a bit in the sea and then take stations or rest until called for their watch.

The next morning, Kaul seems more himself having shaken the mind numbing touch of the crystal creature. It's not all clear skies though. During the night, heavy clouds have blown in and waves pound the shore with increasing fury.

Log: 14 Lamashtan, severe storm.

Feeling more himself Kaul consults with his sage axe one last time, the n approaches Jimmer;

"Hur... Jimm-Skipp-Jimhur... We've been talkin'. Reckon iffen ye are goin' back in then ye'll need me and Lopps... So I'm in iffen we do."

The thug scowls and nods at his axe;

"Ahem. Lopps has one condition like. Lanteri... gets chopped. No saving. No parley. No pressing. No majicks. The others we might save, but she's chum."

"No argument. Once Dibbets has patched us up we can go."

Talk of vengeance is premature as the storm suddenly grows worse and the shriek of the wind nearly drowns out normal conversation. Lola appears at the hatch with Ella in hand. "Nearly lost a halfling up there. Glad we're on shore today!" The rest of the watch rushes down to join all hands in the hold.

"Gotta be seventh verse up there," Hinsin mutters eyes wide. The only partially repaired ship suddenly rocks and shifts as the storm surge reaches it. It appears Jim's first real test of leadership is upon him!

IIRC, Magpie is still beached and in need of some hull work before she'll float--that the case?

Aye, that be so.

"Feck! Anchors out, or we'll be in the trees or the water next we know! Kaul, Zosstrov--up and at it!" And anyone else who's big and strong. "Dibbets, any magic in your kilt for this? All other hands, secure anything loose belowdecks."

Jim acts fast, calling out orders that send the crew to the anchors. The heavy weights are released just in time as the sea smashes against the tilted ship. The anchors hold and the ship is spared being flipped and tossed into the jungle by the storm. A gaze seaward however, reveals that the tempest has just begun.

Other actions? Each round is 10 minutes. Jim rolls again!

Dingus places his anchoring rod in a secure location to assist with keeping the ship in place...then following a hunch, he heads down to check on his new gem.

Time to detect magic, and see what I can find out about this thing.

Are all the sails furled? At this point, I'm thinking to get the lighter folks ashore and sheltered before the real storm front gets here, reduce the profile of Magpie as much as possible, hunker down, and get ready to run for it. Unlike Jim, I don't have five ranks in Profession (Sailor) ;-).

Male Halfling Oracle of Gozreh 6

Earlier to Rafe: Dibbs grimly puts a hand on the lad's shoulder and states in gravely voice "Dinnae worry lad... I ain't fer dyin down there" leaving much to thought and imagination as to the exact whats and whyfors of the words chosen to be spoken.

-----

Dibbets stands abreast the ship, whole weight resting solely on his un-lamed leg as he drinks in the storm with arms held wide like a lover looking forward to an embrace. There is no fear or hardship upon his face as he rolls with the ship's pregnant lurches this way and that as the grace of his beloved indifferent Skylord rolls over them as a rock does a bug beneath it's contempt. Over the howling wind and thunderous rain can be heard a cackling laughter.

As the lesser voices of his mates and crew wend through the storm Dibbets opens his eyes and bellows in his inimitable manner "Fear not mateys - it's jus tha Skylord havin a pissin match agin tha land. Naught tae fear an naught tae be worried - I'm touched" loving twinkle in his eye "Touched by the indifferent blessing o' the ornery bastard above hisself. I've walked fearless intae tha maelstrom an it didnae take me then! I stood atop tha nest o' crows as the ocean rose an fell wi' waves the size o' mountains whipped back an forth an forth! I been tore off me feet an swept through town an intae the sky - an came back more'n when I left."

Turning now and focusing on what's before 'em, and the heathen bastards among the crew that didn't venerate he above that didnae give a sh1t for them... those that instead put faith in the heartless vixen o' the cutlass and screamed as close a blessing from Gozreh as he could "Heave at ye bastards! The Skylord above us ain't goan sink us... but by feck ye gots tae work at it. I tells ye agin - while I'm ridin tha fever storm wi' kilt a flowin..." calling upon a shroud of wind to gird him and somehow make him seem a token spot of calm center within the chaos and maelstrom that swallowed everything else within their view "...we ain't feckin sinkin! NOW, SEND YER VOICES WI' ME!" launching into the most ribald and filthy working song that comes to mind...

Dingus slinks away in the tumult to secretly look at his shiny treasure. Inside the sapphire like gem he sees tiny metal wires that carry little charges of electricity throughout the stone which flare slightly with the crash of thunder over the island.

Kaul helps with the work while Dibbets rejoices in the storm seeking to hearten the crew to its savage fury. Instead, his wild actions seem to frighten or arouse suspicion among the crew. Jim directs the crew.

Jim-yeah, sails were furled. You don't have to give specific orders, just roll and I'll compare the results to the storm roll and see what the table says. It's def an inexact simulation.

Seeing the effect the thunder seems to have on the stone, Dingus puts it up under his robes, and returns to the deck. Once there he'll hold the Gem above his head crying out in ecstasy and hope for the best.

Dingus emerges from the tilted ship only to pull something from his lovely kimono and hold it high to the sky. Dibbets pauses in his haranguing to see what the skinny fool is up to now. It appears that once again the slinky sorcerer has jumped to the utterly wrong conclusion. If he had intended to control the storm, he has failed. A gust of wind lifts Dingus' robes up over his head and sends him spinning toward the railing.

Dingus's eyes widen with delight as he feels the gem begin to hum with power. Taking both hands, he is quite surprised when the storm billows in his robes, and sends him skidding towards the ship rail like a leaf in the wind. Just before he crashes forcefully into the rail he briefly feels the gem struck by lightning...

Dingus his eyebrows singed, and every hair left on his body standing at attention, opens his eyes and a brief puff of smoke comes from his mouth as he opens his mouth to speak.

"Eureka"! The sorcerer croaks before submitting to a coughing fit. He then shakily climbs to his feet, and pulls his robes down so that he has somewhere to tuck his gem, before using the rail to painfully pull himself back to shelter.

Finding his rousing celebration of all things windy and wild decidedly underappreciated, Dibbets frowns and stops singing to yell more abuse, but is interrupted by Dingus' spectacle. Shaking his woolly head and spitting, after turning so the spittle doesn't fly back into his face, Dibbets warns off the lightweight snake charmer. "Get back below decks afore ye set fire tae yerself and the whole damn ship!"

Jim gauges that the anchors are doing their job holding the crippled ship in place and that the crew would remain safer below deck for now. Kaul keeps an eye on his wee mate and making sure nothing major comes loose in the gale.

Shaking his head, Kaul hops up behind the scrawny windswept sorcerer and grabs him by the collar of his kimono before he plummets over the railing. With Dingus stowed, Jim orders all to wait below decks. With Dibbets and Kaul keeping an eye on the deck and rigging and others watching the anchor chains and lower hold. Jim determines that after an hour of the beating, the ship will likely hold.

Jim leads some of the officers on an inspection of the ship while Kaul glowers at the crew making more than a few uncomfortable. Cobb follows along on the inspection muttering under his breath as usual. He gives the sodden and windswept halfling, happily lying in a puddle as he gazes skyward, a good distance frowning and making a little hand sign against evil.

Of the three mates Jim brings along, the crabby carpenter is the most knowledgeable at assessing the ship's current shape. Jim's quick thinking spared the Magpie from the worst of the storm. In fact, she sustained very little additional harm, but Lanteri's rushed mending of the hull has been further mashed and splintered by the reef. A couple days work will get her seaworthy, but she's going to need a bit of time in dry dock to get her truly fixed and fighting fit.

Dingus lies fitfully tossing and turning below decks, his gem clutched to his chest, and Richard lying against him.

Overnight blister began to form on his ravaged body, and several open wounds appear.

Am I molting? Will this outer shell slough off, and a new me appear shiny and whole like Richard? Have my wishes come true and I step closer to my destiny?

"Ow! Ow! Ow!"

Dingus slowly and carefully removes his beautiful Kimono to keep it from becoming stuck to his painful wounds, and lies awake in his hammock, trying to find a place on his body to lie upon without pain.

After the ship's clearly not going to be swept off into the brine, Dibbets lords about for a few minutes on deck sending a smug look any which way at any willing to onlook "What did I tells ye eh? Ain't that right Kauly me mate?" giving the scarred nugget a wink before his brow furrows "Eh, 'ang about... where's snakey got tae?"

Heading off in search of Dingus, he takes in the array of injuries the scaly sorcerer has suffered with a clucking noise "Bugger me lad... got a mite scorched there eh?... How the feck did that happen?" clearly not having paid enough attention during the maelstrom to see the incident in question. He gingerly delivers a poke or two, wanting to see if any change is made to the blisters...

Dibbets finds the naked sorcerer suffering in a hammock in the crew's quarters. The burned kimono hangs rather sadly from a wall peg. Coiled on Dingus' chest, the viper hisses at the intruding halfling, but lies down watching with slit eyes after a moment. The worst of the electrical burns heal up with the wild life force flowing from Dibbets' touch and the naked sorcerer breathes more easily in his hammock.

Satisfied that Magpie won't fall apart any time soon, Jim turns back to the problem at hand. "Well, lads and lasses, who's for coming after Redclaw's treasure? I'll not hold it 'gainst any of you who stay here and get Magpie shipshape, for all the gold in the world won't get us back home if she fails us. That said, I'll want to see work done when we return, hey? Or...." He glances meaningfully at the scarred half-orc.

Male Halfling Oracle of Gozreh 6

Noting the easing of Dingus' fevered breath Dibbs figures the snake man isn't likely to cark it anytime soon, so leaves him and his snakey to it and heads topside again. Hearing the last of Jimmer's words he grumbles, hocks up a loogie and spits it sideways into the sand "Dingus' jus havin a nap, he'll be up an aboot soon enough like. Iffin ye mind's set on headin below an I canne change it... spose I'll needs tae make sure ye dinnae die inna dark."

Jim's call for volunteers to return to the strange hole in Redclaw's ship is met with near silence. Cobb mutters something about knowing the black coral was an ill omen. Hinsin laughs somewhat nervously, "I'll personally see to the repairs, Captain. You can trust me to get her fixed so we can put this shore far behind, right?" Most of the crew nod ferociously. Jim Stork rubs his prodigious nose and gives Jim a look that denotes he'd like to have some words in private.

The half-elf navigator steps forward. "I'll go with you, Captain" Belinna says. "If Iulia is still alive, I won't leave her behind."

Dingus's fevered eyes open as he smells the approach of the healer. After the pain of his wounds is healed, he gestures with one finger for Dibbs to come closer. Seeing the man hesitate a bit, he asks Richard to climb down and wait for him in the corner.

"Dibs. Once again I owe you my thanks. Your efforts will not go forgotten... but I must ask of you another boon... two in fact. One, do you have the ability to do anything magically to mend my new beautiful robes, and secondly, I've got this terrible itch in the middle of my back, and wondered if you could continue your healing ways and get it for me"?

The Taldan nods. "Plenty for all of us to do. Now the wind's died down a mite, fix what you can. We get the gold, there'll be enough to see Magpie made new, hey?" Jim will pitch in on some of the work, then excuse himself and head off to Lanteri's old cabin to review her charts and the like. After a half-hour or so, he'll have Rafe fetch Jenkie for a wee chat.

The plan, btw, is to have the crew spend the day on light duty, and while that's going on he's going to talk to a few crew members and officers so it won't look out of place when he has his palaver with Stork.

It's still raining steadily as Cobb organizes details to ready tools and go cut timber. Any complaints are stymied by Kaul's sanguine scowl.

Jenkie shuffles into the Captain's quarters shortly looking extremely nervous.

Then he leans back in his chair and looks steadily at the swab. "I'll get to the point. You were loyal to Lanteri. Well, I'm the Captain now, and you'd better be that loyal to me. Do that, and we're square. Got it?"

"Yessir, Captain, Sir. Jenkie wont cause no problems. Will do as he's told. Least when he's in his right mind," he adds with a haunted look.
