"Cover your eyes maties. I'm going to light him up".

Dingus casts "Glitterdust" on the fleeing shark boy.

save: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19

The sharkman is covered in golden glitter, but that doesn't stop him from diving into the water to make a swift retreat. The dead one remaining bobs around in the thick soup and slowly transforms back into human form.

"Since you're down there and all, Kaul, care to see what yon sharkman was carrying?"

Kaul perception DC 15:
The corpse is a bloody mess, but you notice something familiar about the tattoos. One is of a black and white bird- a magpie. Could this have been one of the missing crew?

Kaul scowls as he prods at the mangled remains with his hook, then bellows back up to his shipmates;

"Hur... this 'un had a spot o' ink... a magpie... anyone recognise it... One o' ours?"

anyone want to confirm Kaul's suspicion?

Male Taldan Human Free-Hand Fighter/5 Inspired Blade Swashbuckler/1+5 | AC 22 T 16 FF 17 | HP 61/62 NL0| F +5 R +7 W +5 | Init +3| Perc +7

"Could be. A hard thing, if it is. Dibbets, can you remember that well enough to draw it again, once we get back to the ship?"

Male Halfling Oracle of Gozreh 6

Taking a quick look Dibbs snorts "Aye, easy enough eh... nei good enough ink fer my skins... but it'd dae inna pinch like. Whats yer reccy then Madman? - I'm thinkin we gots some looking tae do firs afore we heads back surely?" hocking up a sizable loogy before sending it sailing to one side.

The crew has gingerly made its way over the hooked and barbed trap to inspect the corpse. Reseated upon his mate's shoulders, Dibbets confirms Kaul's observation. Somehow the hapless lost crewmembers have been cursed with lycanthropy and the answer lies ahead. It is also probable that Dibbets' young ward, Rafe, is with them. The crew stop treading water to move after the shimmering manshark.

The giant hallway continues around the perimeter of the ancient temple punctuated at the corners by rooms empty of all but rubble and the soupy chest high water. A gentle current tugs you ahead as you continue. Ruined frescoes appear on the walls. Most of the plaster has long peeled from the walls in the wet conditions, but you can make out shapes that suggest monstrous sharks and alligators devouring one-eyed giants and crowds of much smaller men.

Know religion DC 15 or Local DC 20:
Legends tell of a great shark that roamed the ancient waters of the Fever Sea. Worshipped by the native Cyclopes and later arrivals, It is credited with bringing cannibalism to the region. Whether it was some wayward Spawn of Rovagug, a demon, devil or demi-god is unknown, but some still remember the name of Dajobas.

Knowledge: Local:1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19

Kaul balefully stares at the wrecked frescos (good name for a band btw), and for a moment seems to remember something of their form and a distant connection to his old boss Smiler Keefe...

... and then its gone from his bludgeon addled skull;

"Ain't meanin' much tae me... any o' you lads?"

Male Halfling Oracle of Gozreh 6

Shaking his noggin "Pish all tae me mateys... but these sharkies must be uptae summat... an Rafe is likely wi' em too." frowning a mite before backtracking and hacking off the tattoo from the corpse - skin and all. With a shrug he explains "Easier than drawin tha thing"

The next turn into the interior reveals that the vaulted center of the contorted structure is crippled by a broken back. A single huge beam is fractured in two places and barely supports the stone flagged roof. It would likely all come down if not held aloft by the invading boughs of trees that are also in the act of tearing the place down. The entire floor is covered in weeds and algae, and bits of broken architecture jut from the water like green teeth.

A single structure dominates the broken chamber – it is a statue of a maw made from wood and wicker – a colossus of sharpened teeth-like branches that binds its victims tight within its iron grip. Thick ropes tie the structure to various parts of the chamber, keeping it, for the present, above a dark hole in the water. Sobs and cries of terror come from the belly of this monster where a handful of people await their doom. Most look to be kidnapped slaves, but amidst the group you see Rafe, looking pale and scared.

Four mansharks stand poised by four of the six ropes that hold the sacrificial colossus above the watery pit; you recognize the glittering wereshark, the wounded dreadlocked creature, another nearest you and finally a big one which bears a familiar fur cap. One line in untended, but at the last is a truly horrific thing.

Dingus' light reveals yellowed rows of snaggled teeth lining long skeletal jaws that project from the dark hood of a rotting black robe clinging to a gaunt humanoid form. In its claw it holds a gleaming sickle held over the taut rope.

Male Taldan Human Free-Hand Fighter/5 Inspired Blade Swashbuckler/1+5 | AC 22 T 16 FF 17 | HP 61/62 NL0| F +5 R +7 W +5 | Init +3| Perc +7

"Not I, mate. If it's not sailing, fighting, or wenching, I'm not likely to know much of it."

The Taldan shakes his head slowly, blade up in guard. "Cut the rope and I'll feed you that sickle sideways. We've come for the boy."

Male Halfling Oracle of Gozreh 6

Dibbets takes in the scene and finds his face firming into a resolute and grim countenance. Leaving the words to Madman, the filthy Halfling instead looks over the situation...
Just wanting to ensure I get it 100% clear:
Captives in wicker-maw, wicker-maw suspended above water, snaggle-toothy looking to cut the rope that'd make wicker-maw drop.
In Dibbs opinion - is the risk primarily the 'sharpened teeth like branches' - or the 'water'... as in if the buggers drop, will they get stabbed to death or drown?

Dibbets wrote:

how about a diplomacy check to see if you soothe the inner (and currently outer) beast?

Male Halfling Oracle of Gozreh 6

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (18) + 9 = 27

The shark in the fur cap snaps its rows of teeth loudly and then gives out a loud laugh speaking in a deep growling voice. "I thought we sharing drink, Halfen?" The cutlass held over his rope is lowered to his side.

The ugly thing with a rotting 'gator head turns its snout to the distracted wereshark. Its voice is weak and hissing. "More ssoulss for the ssacrifisse then. The Hollow God will sswallow you ALL!"

Initiative rolls:
Dibbets- 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8

Bellowing back at Anatolasharky Dibbets growls "Aye, we will... but nei iffin this rottin piece o sh1te's got 'is way. Help us feck 'im up!" groaning as he urges his fractured body forwards and eyes another sharky bugger, instilling some of the Sky Lord's indifference in his voice and commanding "Dinnae ye be feckin tryin it!"

map- here's something of a map to direct attacks. #'ed posts have rope (ignore others). boxes are weretypes: 3.dark robes, 4. anatoly, 5.wounded, 6. glittered, 1. other

Even nimble Jim has a hard time pushing through the murky waist high water (half move) that tugs slightly toward the center where a weak spiral indicated the pit above which the wicker maw hovers.

Jim- can go for 6 or 1. Dibbs- allowed, which one?

Dibbets' command dissuades another manshark from employing his cutlass at least for the moment while Jim pushes forward and easily knocks away another rope threatening blade. Anatoly seems to struggle with his animal instincts and is unable to help or hinder due to the curse. Jim's manshark takes a bite at him, but misses.

The dark robed figure rumbles in annoyance. The sickle swings high and comes down hacking through a rope. The remaining armed manshark saws with his blade until another parts. The captives in the toothed basket shriek as it shakes and drops a few inches now only supported by four ropes. (2,4,5,6)

"Master Dibbets, beware!" Rafe yells. "He has some horrible creature that he calls from the pit!"

Sorry; I was starting to post last night when our internet went down. Something to do with my day off tomorrow....

Remembering the way that other shapeshifters have resisted his steel, the Taldan sheathes his rapier and draws his trusty silver dagger. In a smooth continuation of his draw, he scores a shallow slice across the creature's flank.

Dagger to manshark: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (17) + 10 = 27
Dagger damage: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3

Jim nicks a manshark with his silver dagger and the creature howls in pain and keeps trying to bite him. Dibbets paddles along to remain behind Kaul who has moved in on the wereshark on the opposite side of the pit. Lopper's keen edge hasn't proved as deadly as hoped and the lycanthrope bites back. Kaul-8 bite

Anatoly shakes off the beast curse and transforms back to his natural half-orc form. While the injured wereshark shakes off Dibbets' enchantment, but fumbles at cutting his line. The dark robed leader suffers no such misfortune, it pushes through the waist deep water and with a gleaming slash, cuts through the remaining rope on the west side of the room. The wicker basket drops farther and the line next to Jim breaks.

The two remaining lines, one near Anatoly and the other near the injured toothy traitor, groan dangerously as the trap full of innocents looks ready to drop them into a watery grave!

With a final "Snot the bastards lads... I'll see tae the poor feckers gettin dropped like." adding another few words t'wards Anatoly "Dinnae be dyin... ye still nae tasted me hooch" Dibbets dives into the muck and aims to get himself as near enough to under the spiky contraption as he can...

Actually, Dingus' action probably won't affect Jim's atm. One question--how far from Jim is the end of the broken rope? Could he reach it and try to pull it down?

Male Daytona 500 DM / 12

Dingus sends a vapor Viper towards the leader, hoping to stop him from cutting other ropes. "If they fall, someone leap in and grab a few of them, I'll try to levitate you out".

that's two questions, actually. It's dangling pretty high. It'd be quite a jump and unlikely Jim could counterbalance all that weight.

Could be an awesome way to swap from one side of the conflict to the other though? - ride the momentum then leap, do a somersault in the air and land rapier first into a wereshark?

Jim spares a glance for the too-far rope before returning his attention to the sharkman. His blade flashes twice in quick succession at the shapechanger. "Give it up or die."

Secondary silvery stab to shark: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20

that would be nice and Jim's opposite snaggletooth, but still an epic high jump out of the water to reach the rope remnant.

frankly surprised that you all haven't grokked a better way to anchor the dangling victims.

A distracted Kaul misses his mark. Dingus sends another round of vaipers, but to minimal effect. Jim hacks away at his foe and the shark shrieks mercy and attempts to retreat from the fray. Dibbets keeps a wary eye on the straining of the remaining ropes and moves a bit closer to the slowly spiraling water of the sacrificial pit.

Kaul's sharkboy fights back, but isn't tough enough to land a telling rapier slash or bite on the thug. With Jim's nearest lycanthrope in retreat, the way is clear to the injured wereshark. The cursed creature seems well aware of this and fumbles again as he hacks at the rope wildly with an edge of panic.

The robed and toothy leader casts a spell and sudenly moves with extreme speed back around toward Anatoly and one of the remaining ropes. The creaking and snapping strands of the distressed ropes are clearly heard as the victim's within the death basket hold their collective breaths!

you all do remember that I'm allowing a group intimidate based on your infamy points?

Kaul bellows a threat. The long jawed leader responds with a jibe. "My soul has survived one death and would belong to Dajobas anyway!" It is possible that he might have been a little less boastful if the dangerous half-orc were closer though. The two remaining enemy weresharks are a little less certain and look quite nervous about who will end up with their souls.

Dingus glances around for a useful place to stick his rod. One rope dangles about ten feet over Jim's head. The two lines still moored are over by Anatoly and a nervous, but still armed manshark. The only lines in reach would require ducking around Kaul and his adversary or levitating up to hook the basket so it's safely suspended.

Dingus will certainly take the least dangerous and easiest route of levitating to the structure, then pulling himself into position to anchor it with the Anchoring Rod.

Jim pushes through the deep water skirting the nervous lycanthrope he wounded earlier. The manshark takes a half-hearted jab at the sailor, but misses. Jim reaches Anatoly's side just after the hooded cult leader reaches him.

The bright light from Dingus' shining shriveled hand clearly illuminates the robed leader from this proximity. What looked to be a dried alligator head mask is revealed to be the thing's own head with eerie white points of light glowing in the empty sunken sockets of the scaly reptile's eyes. Its sickle arcs down with blinding speed and crackles with dark energy. Anatoly parries the first awkward blow, but gasps as he is hit by the second. He suddenly looks pale and weak as his life energy is drawn through the sickle and into the THING!

Despite looking nervous, Kaul's foe finally manages to snag the orc-blooded with his cutlass for a light wound. Kaul-6 The remaining sharkwere vents his fear on the next to last reluctant rope and hacks it in twain. This is too much to bear for the final thread and the sacrificial vessel jerks downward a step at a time as the the cords of the last rope snap sequentially and the wicker basket falls into the water.

Dibbets and Dingus jump into action. Fortunately, it appears that the wooden structure will take a few moments to sink prolonging the victims' terror unless they are quickly rescued. Dingus floats upward and pulling himself to the top, anchors the basket in place with his implacable rod preventing it from sinking any deeper than knee deep.

anything from Dibbets? folks in basket seem wetted, but safe for the moment.
