Looking out over the black water Dibbs muses Feckin night watch might be a mite more interestin iffin I could see what were goin on... wonder what nugget's beady eyes pick outta this messa black. then holding up a black nailed hand and industriously using his teeth to release some of the grime caked underneath them.
"Keelhaul" Kaul |
Kaul grins as his paw slips toward his trusty sap as his bruised brain works overtime;
Hur. Stowaway... Lad's will want tae query this one... see iffen there's an angle fer us...
Let me know how ye want to play this out Skip... Kauly will try and sap the sap given the chance... but is patient for the opporchanity :)
Cap'n Voodoo |
The big thug eases silently down and behind the still unaware child and with a quick thwack sends the stowaway up KO creek. Calling his little mate to shed some light on the situation, the pair inspect their catch. The boy looks a bit familiar, but you can't think where you might have noticed a kid until Smollet remembers the sleeping boy at Relkep's place. You've got no idea why he's here, but this is the alchemist's son!
Dibbets |
Initially confused and then following Bigget with interest Smollet gives the wee lad a good looking over before the lightbulb twinges "Bloody 'ell mate... it's the alchy's wee lad... grab some rope eh... ye didnae hit 'im too hard?" and the halfling will take steps to make sure the little ones well restrained.
He then asks Bigget to clamp his one meaty paw over the snoozing lad's mouth and calls on Gozreh's indifference to undo the worst of the enthusiastic braining... and brings him back to the world of the blinking. At a low whisper he warns "Now quiet lad... best get yer head a thinkin, and nei screamin when me mate takes 'is paw off yer yap... Now why are ye here" giving Bigget a nod to ease off with his digits.
Cap'n Voodoo |
The thick jungle canopy smothers out nearly all of the light from the gibbous moon so it is hard for anyone, but Kaul to see much without Dibbets' light. The boy's eyes flutter open and Dibbets can sense his fear.
"M-m-masters, I meant no harm. Please spare me. All I know is that my father woke me some days ago and told me that he could no longer protect me. He told me to seek you out- the hook-handed half-orc and halfling with a Taldan and Tian. I made the docks just as you disembarked this boat so I hid aboard as I had nowhere else to go. It wasn't difficult as everyone seemed distracted by a fire in town."
Dibbets |
Running a calloused hand through his wiry hair Dibbets reflects "Turns out ye daddy had a bit o' vinnygar in him after all like. So Rafe, ye ain't tha first o' us tae get they start onna boat when ye weren't meant tae." giving Kaul a nod to ease up on any of the intimidatory aspects "Thing is though, we's not tha ones in charge 'ere eh... we gots tae convince the ones that is that ye gonna be worthwhile keepin livin. Ye grew up in ye dad's shop right? - ye ken much o' the stuff he did?"
I'd go and wake up Vorsy and Wu Fang - but you're both in fever dreams so I'd assume ye'd prefer the sleep?
Dibbets |
Grinning and half-chuckling that turns into a phlegmy cough Dibbets shakes his head "Oh nei, I ain't tae teach ye... I was more wonderin if like ye could make heads nor tails o' tha con'trapshun that keeps this 'ere tub steamin... seems we lost the engineer to small an' bitey teeth... ye'd be worth keepin iffin ye could figger out that sorta stuff." stretching out his neck and looking to Bigget "But we'll speak fer ye tae the Cap'n and mate... least mebbe we'll lets Vorsy do it fer ye... Faruq'd sooner sh1te me out than pat me onna head like."
"Whadja reckon Biggs, should we wake uppa Vorsy an see what 'e thinks?"
Cap'n Voodoo |
Rafe doesn't seem much of a flight risk considering that the halfling seems friendly and particularly after he hears of Hurg's demise. He asks for a bite of cheese and curls up at the halflings hairy feet until the morning when the rest of the ship stirs.
Vors seems to have stabilized though the slender sorcerer looks even worse and moans quite wretchedly in his hammock. Dingus-4 Wis, both still fatigued.

Coming into cabin quietly Dibbs sweats when he sees the moaning mates "Feck it... this is why tha soggy bastard were good fer us... he'd have some kinda clue o' how tae help tha buggers rather than just rum fer comfort." rousing Vors and Wu Fang with some delicate care "Hey mateys, we founda stowaways... it's Relkep's kid Rafe. 'Parrently we mades a bit o' an impression like an he figgered tha lad'd be safer wi' us than 'im. He's had a decent peeps atta engin below as wells, so I reckons we ken twist tha Cap'n an tha dandy tae keepin 'im on... but Faruq's an arse, so it'd be betters iffin either o' ye raised it wi' 'im. Ye ups tae it Vorsy?"
Dibbets |
Snuffling around in his bags Dibbs finds a few of the more recent liquid acquisitions, and approaching Dingus' cot gingerly... with full lookout for errant snakelike beings.... gives him a poke "Eh Wu.... yeah Wu... any o' these things gonna be good fer Vorsy and Wu?"
Cap'n Voodoo |
I'll leave Dingus' response up to him, but keep in mind that his WIS is something like 4 right now- fevered, delirious and barely conscious.
Rafe looks excited as he recognizes the bottles from his father's shop. "Hey, that's my father's Superlative Bloodcove Cure-All. It's strong stuff; it has a drop of arsenic in it. It's nearly guaranteed to cure your friend's sleeping sickness though."
Relkep's Bloodcove Cure-all: Fort save DC 10 vs. the arsenic and then +4 to save against disease.
Dingus Mack |
Snuffling around in his bags Dibbs finds a few of the more recent liquid acquisitions, and approaching Dingus' cot gingerly... with full lookout for errant snakelike beings.... gives him a poke "Eh Wu.... yeah Wu... any o' these things gonna be good fer Vorsy and Wu?"
"Yes thank you I would like some tea". "shouldn't you heat it up first though". Dingus looks at the offered potions with fevered red eyes, and reaches for them before falling sideways back into his hammock.
Cap'n Voodoo |
Wu Fang gets his drop before Vors. Everyone watches closely, but it will likely take some time to see an effect.
Dingus- a pair of fort saves, por favor.
The captain comes down from the wheelhouse soon after and seems a little surprised that his crew has grown. "What ees zis? I do not remember a boy on ze boat?"
Dibbets |
With a quick look to Rafe and a single finger held to his mouth to suggest he keep fairly quiet unless asked questions Dibbets ventures to the Captain "Stowaways... but s'alright, we know 'im an' he's gonna be useful tae us. Turns out he's got a good eye an were watchin Hurq at work downstairs like. Reckons he ken help ye wi' the enjin."
Cap'n Voodoo |
The moustachioed sailor smiles broadly revealing a golden tooth. "Zat would be very nayce! Come zen young man, let us get zis boat moving. I do not want to stay no longer near ze Kaava Lands."
The pair head below decks and after a couple clunks and puffs of black smoke, the paddle starts turning slowly and you rush to pull up the lines before it starts forward.
"Keelhaul" Kaul |
Sorry guys - work amped up again and I just crashed when I got home :)Right where were we... ;)
Kaul interjects between the half-orc, matching Faruq's withering stare with the smile of a hungry mako;
"Hur... He was speakin' o Wu... He's a mite pasty and needs some bolsterin' tae defend against lurgies an' such... Hur"

Cap'n Voodoo |
Faruq's eyes narrow, but his opinion of his cousin-orc's intelligence is so low he takes him at his word with a smirking nod. "Riiiight." Any further verbal bandying is cut short by the return of the captain and Rafe. Faruq looks to his superior with confusion at the appearance of the new boy. "What's this?"
Estabo claps the boy on the back and jerks a thumb at the others, " 'E follow zese guys and was hiding in ze hold. A very good zing, too. Ze boy help me start ze engine." He pauses taking a quick head count. "Hey, who looking for ze bars and snags?!"
With that the captain grabs Rafe and hauls him up to the wheelhouse leaving Faruq to give Bigget a cold glare muttering, "I know what you're up to and I'll have no buggery onboard." With that threat, he heads for the foredeck watch.
Dibbets |
Dibbets tries hard... very hard to resist the opening that Faruq tossed up into the air... but ultimately can't help himself. At Faruq's retreating back he calls out "What do ye think he keeps me around fer eh?" before finding his way chuckling to his bunk for an early morning kip.

Kaul joins in the chuckling with a hacking laugh;
"Hur... We're too rough fer that one... likes his hammock-warmers soft as silk hur-hur-hur!"
James "Madman Jim" Patterson |
Jim laughs out loud and claps the halfling on the shoulder. "We'll say naught of tongues, either." His laughter dies away as he rubs his forehead in discomfort. "I'll be glad to be shut of this fever, hey?"
Cap'n Voodoo |
The day progresses without mishap and you travel up a long bend in the river. The jungle continues to be thick on either side and intermittently opens above to let in the hot sun. The Bloodcove Cure-all appears to have done some good and at least Wu Fang doesn't look any worse by supper time. The captain weighs continuing the run through the night and relying on the pair of half-orcs on the crew for keeping watch while traveling in the dark, but finally decides that it is too risky.
After tying off for the night, you eat your meal and there is some idle time before watches are set and the rest retire for the evening. Rafe joins the rest in the main cabin and Faruq sullenly takes a hammock as well. It is quite evident that he means to keep an eye on any potential illicit recreational activities.
two more forts for Dingus if he wants another dose and a perception roll for Dibbets and Kaul on watch.
Dibbets |
During the idle time Dibbets seeks out Rafe, giving him a older-brotherly slap on the shoulder "Ye did good kid... now 'eres a coupla things fer ye. A bit o' metal tae keep ye guts in, an a bit o' metal tae make tha other buggers guts leak out." handing over one of their chain shirts and a masterwork dagger. "Theres many a bitey we might be encounterin an iz best ye ha some way o' defendin yerself... but remember like. Nugget 'ere an Vorsy are tha ones tae put 'em down savvy? Sh1t gets heavy ye find either Wu Fang or me an keep close eh? An iffin yer on yer own, get screamin an we'll get runnin, savvy?" making sure the words sank in before giving him a tousle of the hair "Now gets some rest eh? Likely ye needs it afters bein in tha enjin all day like."
After that Dibbets makes his way outside to share a snifter of hooch with his gobbet, and get ready for another steamy night...

Rafe tries on the chain shirt which looks more like a chain skirt on the slim lad who's not yet sprouted a whisker, but he seems proud of it and handles the sharp dagger with care. "Thank you, Master Smollet. I'll do my best." He puts his armor in one of the lockers and after some consideration stabs the dagger into the wood wall beside his hammock so it will be near at hand.
"Keelhaul" Kaul |
Kaul rumbles and grumbles past the incoming watch of little folk with a nod and a crack of his no-neck;
"Save some o' yer dishwater fer me Smolley! Hur!"
Once on deck the thug is typically abrasive and gets to his task;

Cap'n Voodoo |
It is deep in "Guts" watch with Bigget on the foredeck and Faruq on the aft when the unthinkable happens. Shouts of alarm arise from the wheelhouse! Below in the main cabin, Smollet is awake in an instant though Vors and Rafe are slower to stir. He nimbly flips out of his hammock and barely notes Wu Fang is missing as he rushes for the alarm.
The halfling reaches the hatch to find Faruq already on the steep narrow stairs drawing his heavy curved blade as he reaches the upper hatch. Smollet is a couple steps behind and can make out little in the dark.
