I believe the Groom has the box still. If you want to take a closer look at it at some point.

The small black box is highly polished and measures about 9”x 6”x 3”. It is made of something akin to darkwood and carved with faint intricate patterns of tendrils or tentacles or something worn down by time. The box appears to be a puzzle box of some sort and is seamless with no obvious openings or features other than a dimple at one end.
It is supernaturally hard and defies any attempt to crush or force it open.

"Ah! Let me see those items", Dingus replies when addressed.

casts Detect Magic

1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16 Appraise with Detect Magic
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19 Appraise with Detect Magic
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9 Appraise with Detect Magic
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15 Appraise with Detect Magic

"I must return to the edge of the Jungle and release this poor creature". "Would anyone else like to go as this magnificent beast it released into his natural home"?

Dingus- Spellcraft identifies magic items. Read magic auto identifies scrolls. Make sure you tell me what specifically you are identifying as well. I'll just go with box, wand, scroll, scroll in this case.

Dingus focuses his magic sight on the loot and attempts to read the auras. The black box glistens under his gaze and the scrimshaw becomes more distinct until he can make out an ominous pattern of not tendrils, but writhing serpents. There is a very faint aura of divination that resembles detect poison.

The wand has miniscule carvings of arrows and swords and a cursory examination reveals it to be a half charged wand of magic weapon (25 charges).

One of the scrolls is noted oddly, but the other contains a spell of misdirection.

Thanks for that. Now I won't have to keep up both skills. I swear that the Beta used Appraise with Detect Magic, and I must have just carried it over...Noted.

the Groom will pull out the chain shirt and the flask and show them to Dingus. The 20 Sails he will add to Dibbet's pile.

As he watches Keelhaul scratch his head over the box, "Maybe if we took the box back to Granny's, our little friend..." and he pats his satchel that contains the skull, "...might tell us how to open it."

Male Halfling Oracle of Gozreh 6

"So we got 220 sails an 300 in gems to go around. Splittin 520 five ways makes 104 don't it? Who wants the extra sparkly in their share?" Dibbs sweeps one gem and 51 in coin into his pocket.

Cap'n - was there anything special bout Beedle's dagger? - if not I'll just add it to my collection :)

"Dingus, ye ken keep the paper and back scratcher if'n ye like. An I'm suren ye don't want me followin ye out to release yer scaled beastie.... otherwise it's free life mightn be that long" upon hearing a hiss from the sack, Dibbets petulantly pokes out his tongue at it.

Male Human (Chelaxian) Inquisitor of Besmara 6+2 | HP 46/46 | AC 20/Flat 17/Touch 13 | CMD 17/Flat 14 | F+5, R+5, W+8 | IP 0 | Perc +12 | Init +6 | Move: 20ft.

the Groom follows Dibbet's math, lifting up fingers to follow his count, till he comes to his missing finger. He shakes his head trying to follow Dibbet's logic but laughs at the final result, "HuhHuh...sounds fair."

"That shirt should be good for you Kaul, lots of room in it. It came off the floating fat man." ;-)

Male Half Orc Rogue (Thug) 6+5 | HP 70/70| AC 21/14/NA | F+5, R+9, W+2 | IP 1 | Perc +10 (+11 Freeport), Darkvision 60ft | Init +3 | Move: 30ft. | Status: -

Kaul's beadies light up at the shirt and he immediately measures it up against himself;

"Hur. Aye should fit nice and proper... nice to see being built like porbeagle has its upside hur-hur!"

Cap'n is the chain shirt MW? Not bothered either way as its still a catch, but you mentioned it was fine quality...

He then takes his share o' the sails and sparklers, netting 1 gem and 51 gold.

In answer to Dingus Kaul rubs his heavy brow;

"Am with the little foghorn on that one Dingus. My natural 'abitat is the alleys an alehouses mate... maybe you should keep it... be a pet like... feed it pests like rats or ripe arsed halflings hur-hur-hur!"

Kaul chuckles hoarsely at the joke.

yep, chainshirt is MW. also Beedle's dagger is MW. it was his bonded object, but nothing special for the uninitiated. The potions are cure light wounds: 1 dose in Goyne's flask, 2 in Haskins' flask. I just realized I didn't list Beedle's spellbook as loot. He was a pretty awful student, but still has notes for: color spray, expeditious retreat, disguise self, unseen servant.
No one up for helping Dingus free his snake? It's just a nice stroll to the north of Drac's End. how is everyone else planning on spending the remainder of their evening?

Male Halfling Oracle of Gozreh 6

Dibbs ideas for the rest of the evening involve grog, singing, grog, relieving bladder pressure in public, grog, then a stumble up to the free room and passing out blissfully.

I don't think Dagrit knew what she was getting into on that bargain.

Male Halfling Oracle of Gozreh 6

Cap'n - there was a reason Dibbets started off with only a coupla silver to his name :P Keep him on land for a few more days and he'll be broke again :)

Awww hell. If Dingus wants release this thing he'd better not do it alone - we got too many enemies lurking...

Licking his meathook fingers, Kaul narrows his eyes and looks at Dingus and his hissing bag:

"Hur. If yer goin throu Drac's End Dingus, then I'll best come along - keep you and scaley out o' trouble hur-hur. 'sides I fancy airin' my new metal hide hur."

Kaul starts unbuckling his studded leather...

MW Chainshirt... sweet

Sorry, been afk.

Jim adds, "I'll go with you too, Dingus."

"I will maintain our presence here with Dibbets. Will keep an eye out for our Spirit of the Docks. Missions of mercy in the pouring rain are not on my agenda tonight. Although I can show some charity to the situation. Dingus...your snake bag."

the Groom keeps on hand on the hilt of his sword, the other he reaches out and touches the snake through the canvas. "I wash away the scrawl that marked this creature's name on the Queen's ledger."

Cure Light Wounds -> 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9

"If you insist on doing this tonight. Remember that the Yellow Man still wanders the streets."

Later he will inform Dagrit that they are interested in her problem.

Dingus, Jim, and Kaul head back out into the night with a much less injured and angry snake in tow. Thankfully the rain has waned again though the dense cloudcover prevents the faintest traces of light from reaching the darkened docks and streets. The streets of the Eastern District still have some traffic despite the rain and light from the occasional lamp or window guides you through the now familiar streets around the Field of Honor. You have just a moment to wonder if Vinari and Dolo are around when two imposing figures suddenly block your way.

”Well now, looky here.” Vinari taunts in his annoyingly nasal voice. “It’s our little friends from last night. Hey, we found out who the fat man is, huh. Haskins. and he’s looking for you and another little grayskin sneak. Maybe we should let him know we found you.”
Dolo looks impassive and merely asks where you are going.

*****

Dagrit looks pleased that the Groom has accepted the job. "Well then, get down there and see if you can find out anything about the supposed ghost and take that little boozer with you before he drinks up all my stock!"

Male Halfling Oracle of Gozreh 6

As the Groom walks back into the main hall of the tavern, he finds Dibbs leading the hall in a rendition of "Oooooo, who lives in a pineapple under the sea...."

Male Taldan Human Free-Hand Fighter/5 Inspired Blade Swashbuckler/1+5 | AC 22 T 16 FF 17 | HP 61/62 NL0| F +5 R +7 W +5 | Init +3| Perc +7

Jim nods in greeting. "Evening. Someone left a little present for us with Beedle's body, and we're taking it back to where it belongs. Mediogalti fer-de-lance...want to see it? We'll be back this way after we're done, if you want to meet us later." He thinks to himself, After the snake and the demon, somehow these two aren't as impressive as they were last night.

Vinari narrows his eyes at Jim, "I don't think I like your tone. Mediogalti furry pants? What are you talking about?"

"Ees a serpent, you fool." Dolo explains. "So de Beedle is dead den?"

Kaul warily eyes the two hounds:

"Aye he is... the greyskin dealer... name o' "Slick" got away though."

Shrugging his no-neck shoulders Kaul adds in a quieter whisper towards Dolo primarily:

"We had tae deal with a demon o' some kind an' all... think its connected with a wierd Garundi in yellow robes whose been sniffin around. Bad sort. Could be he's looking to put the hex on the Hellhounds as well... so if you see him, I'd not mess around...hur-hur."

...before adding:

"Anyways me, Jim, Dingus & Bess got a snake tae release boys... So if there ain't nothing else..."

Male Human (Chelaxian) Inquisitor of Besmara 6+2 | HP 46/46 | AC 20/Flat 17/Touch 13 | CMD 17/Flat 14 | F+5, R+5, W+8 | IP 0 | Perc +12 | Init +6 | Move: 20ft.

the Groom will come up to Dibbets, "Do you stow the Grog in your leg? Is that why you limp?...Come on..We gots to work off your barbill. You, me and our glowing friend are going to take a look under this establishment."

the Groom will inform the waitress to inform the others that he and Dibbets are working under the tavern.

Male Halfling Oracle of Gozreh 6

Dibbets gives the Groom a pouty faced look as he approaches his current position atop one of the tables "So soon? but I've hardly started drinkin yet...". With a sigh, he turns to the nearest man / woman / beast and lays a big sloppy wet kiss on their cheek before sprinking some coin on the table "I must be off, but ye should all keep drinkin so ye ken catch up afore I get back"

He then dismounts the table by way of a chair with a mock solemnity and gives the Groom a friendly pat on the backside "Lead on then me black robed mate, letsch get this busness overwith"

As he follows the Groom he starts ramblin absentmindedly "Ye know, I can't remember seein him wivvout his hat on... strange that innit... maybe when hes not lookin I ken knock it off fer a peepsie, all accidental like..."

Ghost Party.

The dour barmaid who happens to be bussing all Dibbets’ empties at the moment stands in shock at the pissed halfling’s smooch of opportunity. Outraged, she drops the tray and stomps off to the kitchen yelling, ”It just isn’t worth it!”

Dibbets and the Groom exit the Broken Mug to find the night is pitch black, but at least the rain has stopped. Dibbets manages to pull himself together enough for a spot of light to help you find the way under the pier. In the midst of the hanging planks and nets you hear soft sounds around you: an intermittent sob, a drunken cackle, and ragged snores above the sounds of the water.

*****
Snake Party.

”Demons and men in yellow robes? You guys are fruitier than a drunken halfling.” Vinari snorts then looks around nervously to see if any of Finn’s relations are about. Dolo just nods and reminds you to keep an eye out for Haskins.

Dingus, Jim, and Kaul quickly pass through the Eastern District and into Drac’s End where the streets grow narrower, darker, and less regular. The paving stones disappear and you are now stepping on damp hard packed dirt which turns to mud as you reach the outskirts of the Drac’s End.

The shacks grow rougher and spottier until you feel a wall of deeper darkness ahead and are suddenly surrounded by the muddled scents of vegetation, rot, and cloyingly sweet night flowers that overwhelm the smells of the settlement. A continual buzz of insects greets you punctuated by the calls of frogs. Something flitters over your head as you reach the liana covered trees at the jungles edge.

Male Taldan Human Free-Hand Fighter/5 Inspired Blade Swashbuckler/1+5 | AC 22 T 16 FF 17 | HP 61/62 NL0| F +5 R +7 W +5 | Init +3| Perc +7

Jim strains his eyes, peering into the darkness. "Keep your eyes open, Kaul...I'd prefer not to set foot on this one's older brother unawares."

Male Halfling Oracle of Gozreh 6

"Hey Groomy, mebbe we should check what ol Bony has to say, hey?" leaning on his staff for a bit of support with a stupid looking grin on his face.

"perhaps we should go in a little bit". "Just to make sure he doesn't wander back into civilization...though I expect he has had enough of that for now", Dingus lets a little un-nerving giggle creep into his voice.

Casts Light on his Hanbo, and uses it to probe the terrain ahead as he goes into the wilderness about 50 yards before releasing the snake from the bag. Dingus will lay the bag on the ground, and unclench the top, then run away as he sets the bag down. If necessary he will use Mage Hand to pull the bag away from the snake.

Male Human (Chelaxian) Inquisitor of Besmara 6+2 | HP 46/46 | AC 20/Flat 17/Touch 13 | CMD 17/Flat 14 | F+5, R+5, W+8 | IP 0 | Perc +12 | Init +6 | Move: 20ft.

the Groom pulls out the skull from his satchel. "Let us see what this has to say."

Ghost party.

You aren’t sure if it is just an afterimage as Dibbets' spell ends, but for a moment it seemed like the skull held a faint light. Then you are sitting in darkness, waiting.

After what feels like hours, long enough at least for Dibbets to pass out and have an entertaining dream about a friendly pink seastar in colorful short pants, the Groom perceives a definite reddish glow rising from the skull's dark sockets. Staring into the dark water, the Groom catches his own wavering reflection in red and then something pale and white as moonlight rising from below.

*****
Snake party.

The dense foliage resists Dingus’ attempts to push his way through leaving him with no choice but to dump the dangerous viper at the edge of the overgrowth. The timid Tian lays the bag down and retreats to a safe distance before using a cantrip to pull the bag away. At the edge of the light spell he can just make out the glitter of the large serpent’s eyes as it tests the air for a moment with its tongue. Oddly there appears to be movement on the ground around the fer-de-lance which you suddenly realize is a swarm of baby snakes that have also emerged from the bag to slither over their mother. In the blink of an eye the mother and brood turn and quickly disappear into the dead leaves and underbrush.

Dingus approaches the area for one final goodbye and suddenly freezes as an unnoticed newborn snake climbs onto his foot to coil watchfully. Taking a risk, Dingus stretches out his hand and the tiny green fer-de-lance climbs up and then into his sleeve with a departing rasp of its bright orange tail. Dingus feels the little viper slither up his arm to curl comfortably in the hollow of his collar bone.

True fact, fer-de-lances give live birth and the hatchling should be the proper size about the time Dingus needs a familiar : )

Now that was cool Cap'n. This kind of stuff is why I love RPG's. No video game can capture this kind of stuff!!!!

Dibbets lies stretched out on his back snoring, a trail of drool streaming down the side of his face. Every few minutes he snorts and mumbles something softly ".. piss off sunshine.... yeah thas good.....but i don't wanna hamster.."

An acrid smell gives some indication of why his lower garments are getting wetter.

When the dear Cap'n thinks that Dibbets has done enough penance from his short and furious bout of drinking, he sits bolt upright with a start yelling "SAUSAGE!"

Cap'n: Can I just echo Dingus - was very cool indeed... superbly atmospheric stuff

Dibbs: Oh dear gods, you do make me cry with laughter sometimes...

Kaul watches the little snake twist up the mage's arm with fascination;

"Hur. Little Ferdy seems to like you Dingus... best keep that quiet from Dibb's tho... know how much he "loves" snakes... Hur-hur."

Kaul amber eyes narrow as he heeds Jim's warning and he scans the surrounding jungle:

Best be on our way eh boys? Lot worse stuff in here than Ferdy and his mother... although compared to dealin with a drunken Dibbs... maybe stayin' aint so bad hur."

@Kaul - I aim to please :) The sad thing is that only 50% of that post is based on fiction....

@Cap'n - I'll third the congrats on a nice set piece

thanks. just drawing on my extensive experience hanging around crazy azz herpetologists and watching cartoons of course (btw the seastar was supposed to be patrick. I don't even wanna know where Dibbets was taking that!).

As Kaul turns to go, his darkvision catches a dark cloaked figure ducking behind one of the shanties along their route back to town. It seems they've been followed.

"I'll grind yer bones and stuff you back into your skin ifin' ye don't shut yer trap 'bout sausages," the Groom hisses as the first pale glimmer is visible below them. "Although drunken yammering is what might draw it near based on our witness, but still, guard yer wits and yer tongue."

the Groom draws his rapier ready to defend himself from whatever is rising from below. Because of the noise of the water slapping the pilings, he places the skull near his ear in case it wishes to speak.

"What pulls you back from the fathomless black?", he calls to the creature, or the sea, whichever is more responsive.

Definitely cool--having a live person on the other side of the screen (both kinds) makes a huge difference.

Jim looks suspiciously at Dingus' new acquaintance. "Any idea what they like to eat, mate? I don't want him thinkin' he'd like a taste of me."

Dibbets and the Groom.

There is a burbling sound and the skull glows steadily in the Groom’s hand. The pale form draws nearer until it is floating just under the water's surface about two feet below your perch. The translucent being has the build of a large and muscular human, but with refined features and scalloped ears similar to an elf. Its celestial beauty is marred however by a blackened noose wrapped around its throat, and the torn remains of its lower torso where the apparition appears to have been cut off at the waist. The burbling, gargling sounds intensify and are echoed from the skull.

in Aquan:
”I came to warn them and they killed me...they killed me...”

Male Human (Chelaxian) Inquisitor of Besmara 6+2 | HP 46/46 | AC 20/Flat 17/Touch 13 | CMD 17/Flat 14 | F+5, R+5, W+8 | IP 0 | Perc +12 | Init +6 | Move: 20ft.

the Groom responds in the gargling manner of speech.

in Aquan:
"Who did this ? And what was the warning?"

He nods his head to Dibbets as if to assure him, they were not under immediate threat.

The spirit’s large eyes turn to the Groom as it pulls at the noose.

Aquan:
“Humans killed me with their blackened ropes. You… You must warn the Sea Lord. You’ll need the Seapact Ring to prove yourself. They took the ring and defiled my body.” The ghost looks down towards his missing legs and sobs. “Find the ring... the sharks are circling...”

The spirit is interrupted by a scream from a woman woken by the exchange. In an instant the spirit vanishes and the skull fades leaving you surrounded by darkness and fear as others below the dock stir awake from the scream.

the Groom quickly stows the skull, so as to not further frighten the curious underdwellers. "Come. Let us leave this place, Dibbets. The Dead have an interesting tale to tell, but the living won't let us hear anymore." He starts the climb up the twisting path of planks and ladders that will take him back to the surface of the pier.

Great little scene there Cap'n

Spoiler for Cap'n VD...wait that sounds all wrong:
Not sure how much of that is Freeport Lore or general Nautical lore. Not sure how much the Groom should know before spouting off my player ignorance.

Know(History) +7 on the Sea Lord and Seapact Ring ->1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26

I take it that it was a Sea Elf so Know(Nature) not really needed.

but if the Sea Lord is a Religious reference (+6) ->1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14

hmmm, CV or Cap'n V would probably do...

the Groom:
The Sea Lord was the head of Freeport’s government. About 55 years ago, Marten Drac instituted the Drac Succession Law which required the title to be passed down directly through the Drac bloodline going back 200 years to the original Sea Lord of Freeport, Captain Drac. After the fall from power and death of heirless "Mad" Milton Drac about five years ago, Freeport went through a Succession Crisis. In my take on Freeport, the advisory body of the Captains’ Council took over and did away with the title of Sea Lord. So the ruling body currently is the Captains’ Council consisting of 13 privileged members of society. This is common knowledge.

The Seapact Ring would be extremely obscure, but seeing as you got a 26 (curse you), you know the following: historically there has been a merfolk settlement just outside the reef southeast of Freeport. Relations with Freeporters were good and occasionally merfolk would even trade on the Docks. Some say that a Sea Lord in the past had a mutual defense agreement with the merfolk against sahaugin and other threats from the deep. Unfortunately, the merfolk disappeared about the time of the Succession Crisis a few years back and haven’t been heard from recently. The Seapact Ring sounds like it might have something to do with the agreement.

Male Halfling Oracle of Gozreh 6

Dibbets responds to the Groom in the same gargling speech "Aaarch, bpsdh, thsid" before realising his mouth is drier than the Qadiran desert. He works up some saliva before trying again "Well I'm glad that we found ye a friend, but I'll be needin a short detour afore we go back topside."

With that Dibbets rolls his fractured carcass off the pier into the ocean with a splash. Dunking his head before raising it and shaking the worst of the fetid seawater out of his beard, he swims over to the pier and climbs back out. The acrid smell is gone, but is replaced by one you aren't quite sure is better.

"Figured you'd be preferen if I had a bath before we go back intae civilized company.... so I did.... lets go" and follows the Groom back to the surface. "So what did yer friendly lookin hanged half-man have tae say?"

Male Human (Chelaxian) Inquisitor of Besmara 6+2 | HP 46/46 | AC 20/Flat 17/Touch 13 | CMD 17/Flat 14 | F+5, R+5, W+8 | IP 0 | Perc +12 | Init +6 | Move: 20ft.

"Most men would piss themselves seeing that creature, luckily you took advantage of your downtime before hand." He doesn't continue until they are far from possible overhearing ears.

"Don't know how long he has been down there, but he wanted to warn the Sea Lord. 'Cept there ain't been no Sea Lord for about five years. He said humans tied him up with black ropes and stole his ring...the Seapact Ring. He was Seafolk and said we will need the Ring to prove ourselves. His last plea was to find the ring as the sharks are circling. Likely meaning Sea-Devils more than likely."

In thought for a moment, "Some mixed results to report to Dagrit. We probably quieted the 'below-pier spook' a bit too quickly for our room and board needs. The good news is it may take a while to fully appease it."

Male Halfling Oracle of Gozreh 6

Stroking his wet beard thoughtfully "A fine tale he gurgled at ye then. We should wait fer the others tae come back afore we figger out what next?" Dibbets adds before an impish smile creases his features.

"Lucky fer us I know the perfect place to be doin the waitin... an as ye say, the drink is still free fer the time bein" before stumping along with as much spring in his step as he can muster.

Realising that they've been tailed Kaul hisses a whispered warning to Jim and Dingus:

"Lads... my nighteyes are pickin' up an unwelcome spy watching us... keep walkin' and talkin'.. be distractin'... am gonna try and outsneak the sneak"

As the (hopefully distracting) pair move off Keelhaul draws his sap then slips into the shadows, the darkness swallowing his bulk, and but for the flash of an amber eye and toothy grin, he's gone:

Stealth:1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19

Kaul will try and circle round behind our shady little observer... hur-hur.

Kaul silently moves around the back side of the shack and creeps up on the unsuspecting figure that is watching his companions. The spy is average human height and slender, but it is hard to make out any details beneath the cloak and hood.

Jim, still apparently carrying on an animated conversation with Dingus about the finer points of snake-raising, walks back into Drac's End--if possible, not quite the way the trio came in.

Grinning to himself Kaul brings his sap to bear on the overcurious mook:

Sap Attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22

Sap (non lethal) Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5 + (non lethal)Sneak Attack: 1d6 ⇒ 2

"Hur. Sweet dreams hurhur."

The cloaked figure staggers under Kaul’s noggin knockin’, but before Kaul can finish him off a distinctive whiney voice is heard behind Kaul, “Want some flayleaf, sucker?” Although you’ve only heard the voice once before you are almost certain that it is Beedle, certain that is aside from the fact that you know he’s dead.

Is this obvious to Jim and Dingus? If so, see below.

Jim draws his sword and runs towards Kaul, looking for a target.

Kaul's eyes widen in shock at reminder of hearing THAT voice again...

Will Save:1d20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 = 20

Shrugging off whatever damned hex that should-be-deader little basterd thrown at him Kaul lashes out with his sap again, this time at the recipient of the dead man's voice:

Not sure if Beedle voice is Mr Pink or Mr Black but going for him if you will Cap'n

Sap Attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16

Sap Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8

"Hur. Come get some flay pupper. Gonna knock you out, then introdooce you tae Bess... hur-hur!
