I think that it is pretty cool that Starfinder will be set in Golarion's future solar system. I'm wondering, given staff's predilections, if it's going to be more 'Sword and Planet' than straight Scifi. I could dig it.
and HOBGOBLINS! totally underrated. Hopefully they will have a different flavor than the typical orc hordes. In my mind, Orcs:Hobs is the same as Huns:Nazis. Organized evil is a whole 'nother beast.
Also, Curse of the Crimson Throne hardcover. I never really got into RotRL- naughty, naughty sin magic didn't do much for me. but CotCT always sounded more intriguing. Still havent read it or played it and def getting the HC.

To echo Mark's far deeper overview than mine own attempt - it is indeed cyclic. North Sea is planning for 18months in the hole before we most likely see a shift back to more green lighting of projects and wholesale spending.
For us - its a two edged sword... my lads and kit are only being mobilised when there is integrity issues (and the HSE spectre looms) or installing equipment purchased over the last few halcyon years (very little sales/stock piling by the big operators going on - they're running their reserves to the limit). Ergo sales (and restock) will come... it'll just be far down the line.
We're also likely to be sold in around 2 years (given our current investors modus operandi with their "assets"). It'll likely be a Halliburton or suchlike who snaffles us up... and that in turn will create the scenario of surviving under new overlords, who may well have dopplegangers lined up to fill our seats.
My payout is likely to be between 10-20% with a 6 month review. To be honest the take home won't be too bad as I got a 3% raise in January so if its closer to the 10 than the 20, then with less of a tax hit my bottom line won't be crippled massively.
Myself and the wife have put ourselves in a mortgage free situ with some shrewd downsizing and essentially becoming crofters for her family. So should the axe fall we'd be able to take the hit in the short term... Think Mark has the way of it, for those who continue to live the ivory castle lifestyle in Oil & Gas, many of those folk have found themselves up $hit creek without employment. Its about being canny, making lifestyle changes (enforced or pre-emptive) and trying to ride out the storm. As an Ops Monkey I'm acutely aware of my replaceability - its just heads down arse up for the time being :S
As for StarFinder - am pretty excited as well. Will be very interested how Golarion has developed over the eons, what remnants remain and what's brand spanking.
What would be awesome Cap'n Voodoo is to have a small crew of space miscreants riding the solar seas ;)

Trying to get it shaken first... nae convinced its an actual construct.
Of course I'm very likely wrong - but its a delay gambit in the first order... :S

Safe trip matey.
We're scheduled to do a onsite survey in KL followed by a gate valve changeout (we're setting a VR Plug) in mid-August. Works though AEMOS for Petrofac.
Slim-to-negliable that I might get the gig in August as we're going to be stretched if all workshops land as planned (which they never do)...
Dibbets |
Yeah - short rotation is short rotation both ways unfortunately.
Dibbs is cool following Cap'n Jim's thoughts if he wants to try and plumb again - but we'd need to try and fix up Kaul's noggin first.
He also mentioned vote to bring in a bit of the old school pirate crew side of things as well. As in if the majority of their new crew says to go back in, then he could be swayed.

Very long day; will get a post up tomorrow.

What I'm thinking is that we'll need enough of a crew to sail and fight, if we're going hunting. If we don't have enough now, we'll need to hire some, and that means going after the treasure once we're full up (or returning to Freeport for the treasure we have in storage).
James "Madman Jim" Patterson |
Visited my mom today, which took up pretty much all of it. She lives a couple of hours away, and after we collected her we went another hour or so to meet my daughter. And I wasn't going to compose my post on my phone.

Is there a Profession skill other than sailor that covers naval engagements? I'm not familiar with any PF ship-to-ship combat systems, so I don't know the relevant skills.
James "Madman Jim" Patterson |
That's good.
Re Jim's speech: Patience, Dibbets. Jim may not have read the Golarion equivalent of Il Principe, but with five ranks in Profession (Sailor), two ranks in Profession (Navigator), and a +11 Diplomacy check I figure he has a fair sense of how to get the crew on his side.

As Dibbets says. I think that I'll be using Fire as She Bears from the Razor Coast package.
BTW Kaul's current state isn't permanent, but will last a while longer.
Cap'n Voodoo |
I've put the Magpie's stats under her spoiler on the Campaign Info page. This is based on Fire as She Bears! naval combat supplement located at the link.
You ought to pick your officers.
James "Madman Jim" Patterson |
Maybe, yeah. I'm currently spending a nice weekend traveling with my wife, so I won't have time before tomorrow to review the crew.

Dibbs is indeed back on dry land again! - though still getting over the 20 hour commute it took me to get home yesterday (woke up at 4AM, got home at midnight).
During the day will be kid herding time, then tonight I'll get some posts in. Given how everyone seems to hate him and Kaul despite their warm and friendly nature... might be best to leave the crew decisions to him and leave us on the outer as the deranged unhinged axe crew who make sure that Jimmer doesn't get disrespected :P But I'll have some more cogent thoughts on the matter later lah.

Dibbets is probably best suited for 'Priest' - unless it needs Knowledge (Religion) :P - but it's likely a good thing if we seek a minor party or chaplain of Besmara to supplement Dibbs ravings for the windy bugger that doesn't care who lives or dies...
Bosun is Kaul - the muscle behind the throne of our Cap'n Madman.
Dingus might fit into either Gunner or Q'Master depending on how skills influence... though he's our own living artillery... so probably Gunner ;)
Dibbs would get behind Hinsin as First Mate in a big way despite their patchy history.
I'd potentially see Rafe as a Q'Master of the future as well - though we probably need someone in there to start with.
Cap'n Voodoo |
OK, not loathing so much. just trying to be funny.
Cobb is a superstitious sod and def has misgivings about the tempestuous halfling. Anatoly and Hinsin are both friendly. The rest of the crew are neutral though Dibbets does have a rather prickly disposition. I'm sure they will come around when they need a bit of healing. Dibbets could serve as priest if he likes and Jim's loyalty score would be supplemented by his CHA.
Kaul is just straight menacing to most. Bosun should be a good fit.
Gunner requires an exotic weapon feat to use the ballistae.
I could see Dingus as Quartermaster if he likes, no one's gonna be trying to sneak into stores with rumors of deadly serpents lurking around in there. Rafe could be groomed into the position or anything really. At least as QM he could tell the rats to stay out of things.
Dibbets |
Heh - figured that ;)
Priest it is for Dibbs... though I still think that when we potentially hopefully maybe hit port we need to get a Besmaran devotee with some chops to supplement the filthy wee man's more 'unconventional' worship.
Up to Dingus I suppose if he wants to serve as an officer at all?
Dingus Mack |
Dingus likes to "collect" Things, and Quartermaster would allow him to keep track of funding... at least till we find someone better with numbers... then probably chief of curiosity might be a better title.

Apologies on the radio silence over the weekend gents - home interwebs are stymieing me yet again. Will grab posts when I can at work (upside of the recession :)
Bosun works perfect for Kauly.
Loving Dibbs as our priest (we're all damned to brine and thunder) and Dingus as QM... Hur.
"Keelhaul" Kaul |
Dibbs - you'll appreciate this.
Just spoken to one of my techs whose over in your patch at the moment.
He's just undergone his second in-country medical in the space of 3 days (for arse prodding thoroughness one can only presume?) and now faces a 16 hour boat journey to Cendor field...
To say he's not impressed is an understatement lol, but he's ex-forces so stiff upper lip and all that :)

16 hours is a good old trip... tell him to make sure he packs a doggy bag from shore as there is no guarantee they'll actually feed him on the boat!
The best/worst I've had is a guy who was coming up from Australia coming to the rig... he arrived into the heli-base in early morning (about 9am) from KL, then they had technical issues with the chopper... kept him waiting through until 5pm... when they scrubbed the flight and put him on a bus from the heli-base down to the port (7 hours through the night) after which they threw him on a crewboat out to the rig (12 hours).
This all to arrive out on the rig just after the chopper flight that he would've been the next day had he just waited at the helibase overnight... he wasn't happy.

Sorry for the silence--last week my division had five separate radiological incidents, including a personal shoe contamination over an order of magnitude above the mandatory "officially report this to Department of Energy" level, and a measurable uptake of radioactive material that has a very good chance of exceeding the level at which the Department of Energy's watchdog office sits up and takes notice. I'm the chief safety officer for my division, and this morning I had a very polite meeting with the Laboratory COO; his deputy; the director of the environment, safety, & health division; the site radiological safety officer; my division director; and the associate division director in charge of research for my division. So I'm a little distracted at the moment, and if I'm slow posting that's why.
James "Madman Jim" Patterson |
We do mostly nuclear-related R&D. (Here's a LINK to my division's outward-facing website.) Some of the research is medical, though; we've got a big project for production of molybdenum-99, which is the parent of the most widely used medical radioisotope out there, metastable technetium-99.
Dibbets |
Yeah I reckon spilled radioactive material is a free pass :P
Worst I've gotten offshore is setting the sea on fire... and getting live explosives stuck somewhere that it wasn't easy to get them back out again... oh, and that time when we accidentally dropped explosives into the sea... good times?
"Keelhaul" Kaul |
Jimmer - Burning question on the radioactive front is - has anyone gained superpowers yet????? :)
Hur. Burning question... wacka-wacka-wacka... I still got it :)
Dibbets |
Grumble grumble... my two weeks off just got shaved into one week at home... and one week in the arse end of beyond on standby to get my work permit renewed.
Will still be in contact through till Saturdays... but my mind will slowly be putrefying in the glorious port of Bintulu.
James "Madman Jim" Patterson |
Do you at least have net access in the arse end of nowhere?
