Thanks VC. Will finish up tonight GMT-7, as I am at work.
Hello to the crew. I game with Keelhaul in another PbP here on the boards (The BrambleKnight says hi), so I know we got the beginnings of a great team.
Carrying a duffel bag over his shoulder and looking a bit out of place among the more gaudily dressed Freeporters in his plain sailor's tunic and trews, a slender brown-haired man approaches the ship and makes his way up the gangplank, his rolling gait mute testimony to years spent at sea. "James Patterson, present. Thanks for picking me, Cap'n."
GMT-6 here. If you need to reach me outside the boards, my yahoo user name is jbwoodford; email should be obvious from that.
Dingus raises his oddly shaped eyes from the cowl of his hooded robe, and acknowledges the presence of the others with a sharply accented...."Yessssss". "Thissssss ssssshould be fun".
"Heh, well I guess we be a strange sight together, but I suppose the Cap'n must be desperate. Where is the filthy creature? - or is the tiller to tend to itself?"
Howdy one and all, and I am too looking forward to the coming shenanigans. GMT +8 in Malaysia here.
All present and accounted for! Stand up straight, you scalliwags! Well, at least you can find your way to the Docks. I'll give you a moment to gather your duffels and we'll get this boat in the water.
I'm at GMT -7, most of the time. Arizona don't play no daylight saving time. Not much in the way of water out here either, but I've worked Alaska's Inside Passage a couple seasons so I'm looking forward to a bit of virtual maritime recreation. I'll let Dingus and the Groom finish up their characters and we'll shove off soon!
Good question. The Pirate's Guide to Freeport would probably be good information although I might use a couple of the Adventure Hooks. I put my own spin on things though, so don't take anything as set in stone. For example, I've tossed out the Sea Lords and have power split between the nominal governorship of the Captain's Council and a couple large underground organizations.
As for the Freeport Companion: PF RPG Ed. that might have some spoilers in the back half.
That said depending on which direction y'all go we may be heading to sea pretty soon anyway. So I would say perhaps avoid them for a level or two to remain totally spoiler free and not confused.
"So we got a hooded bloke who's sweating rivers, a clean jawed Taldan and some berk who looks like he's wedded the Drowner herself. Looks like you and me's the only ones been on the wrong end of the Captain's daughter."
I guess normal really is all relative. : )
@scranton- I mainly use Freeport for the fluff and I'm not sure everything has been playtested as well as Paizo's crunch, but I'll give that a tentative yes while reserving the right to modify things a little if need be by GM fiat. ; )
That said, I encourage you all to develop your characters as you like and feel free to tweak things as needed through first level. I usually find it takes a level to get my character concept set the way I really wanted it.
Speaking of normal...
I have a question for you all. Freeport has a nice little Insanity mechanic. Basically, when exposed to something mind rending you get a save and if failed you gain a couple of Insanity Points. Insanity Points are subtracted from your Wisdom score for determining your modifier for things like skill checks, ability checks and Will saves. However, they are added to your base Wisdom score for everything else (bonus spells, DCs, monk abilities, etc).
The list of things that can inflict Insanity Points on a PC in Freeport is really wide, including all mind affecting spells and any creature beyond humanoids and animals. I think this is too much. Certainly, outsiders and magical beasts and undead are a not uncommon occurrence in Golarion.
If used it would only apply toward possibly fear effects, aberrations, and maybe certain awful deathly horrors. Possibly texts and things relating to the "old cults".
I wasn't planning on bothering with this mechanic, but seeing as all the characters are kind of nutters already, I thought you might be interested. : )
That could be fun...I can see Jim getting more and more OCD about everything as he takes sanity damage, trying to find security in familiar patterns. (The rest of the PCs, though--if they started going around the bend, how could you tell?) Is there a way to cure insanity in the game, though?

Yep, most of it is short term shock and there are remedies. and again I don't plan on using it extensively, just as flavor now and then. I'm at work now so I'll give more details once I get home to my books tonight.
SO it's initiative time. I've found it works best if the GM just rolls and posts everyone at once rather than first waiting for rolls and then waiting for actions. Are y'all ameniable to that system or would you rather roll your own? I'd just post all the rolls in dicebot and then list order of action.
...but I'll have to wait until I get home to start everything 'rolling' : )
I'd be definately up for the insanity mechanic being used as n' when required. Sounds like it could make for some interesting moments (and decents into further madness lol). As Jim rightly says how would we know?
Personally think this game will end up best described as "One flew over the Crow's Nest"!
As for initiative - yeah happy having you roll the lot skipper - quicker and cleaner.
For what its worth loving the game - knew no good would come with messing with the skin dress!

Oh, I love the insanity concept. Hope to use it on foes too. Fear and Intimidation is my primary weapon..(wait, two main weapons are... :p )
DM rolling initiative is preferred.
I just love that there is something this creepy here. the Groom would have been disappointed if he was unnaturally drawn to participate in a dried flower robbery. Ha!
Three way to remove Insanity Points:
1. Restoration spells- easy but spendy.
2. Therapy- -1 Insanity Point/ week of Heal check DC 25
3. MADNESS! burn off points of Insanity with short and long term psychoses.
Normal is boring - I'm a firm believer that everyone needs a bit of crazy to keep them on the level. Its the ones that don't you have to watch out for....
How are we going to handle xp? - will you state values for us to track?, or just tell us when we can level up?
Dibs- I was just thinking about that. My preference is to just tell everyone when they level, however I know folks like to track progress so I figured I'd just post an xp-o-meter on my profile page to give y'all an idea of how far along you are with the understanding that it is a generalization and not to be used for legal purposes. (standard small print about GMs being slipperier than a vasolined cephalopod).
Don’t worry about it. You may feel a little out of place as the least maritime character in the crew, but you’re still a perfect fit for Freeport and this campaign. Let’s just say you were drawn to the house same as the Groom, but for something different that you can’t quite define. Your serpent blood did feel something in the house though and all will eventually be revealed. Hint: It might have something to do with the little black box just mentioned ; )
Personally speaking the pace is spot on Cap'n... Unless I'm out of town I tend to be able to post at least once a day, so a heady pace suits me [well when Kaul is capable of doing anything lol]
Ok the ring is out there. Seems they don't know the fat man neither, so we need to make a common enemy of him, especially now that his word is not any better than ours.
In a vain attempt to keep our loot let's not be mentioning anything else we skimmed offa "cut nose" or that we lifted from the skinbag's bedroom eh lads?
Have a suspicion these brutes will strip us like devilfish if we give em cause!
I was thinking that the nice rapiers were standard issue for Hell Hounds, so waving one around in town might draw unwanted attention. We'll see how much we can pin on the guards.
Cap'n Voodoo--did Goyne have his sword out, or was it still in its sheath when Kaul was searching his body?
Pace is good for me too... I like the fact that we are spread out across timezones as well, seems to help the pacing.
Thanks for the well wishes, trip is good so far. Shopping is nuts, city is more alive than KL, but traffic is a bit saner than Hanoi. How many of you guys have been through the South East of Asia?
Cap'n has been up and down the west coast of N America from Baja to Anchorage, around the Gulf of Mexico and into central and south America and the Mediterranean. but not Asia, NZ or Aus yet. maybe this winter. :)
Jim:
Sorry, you're fatigued until you recover a point of CON. So a good night's rest or some divine assistance.
Kaul:
Let me look up the hook stats when I get back to civilization. is it a large weapon? 2 handed? also sorry about getting your swag grabbed, but you kinda egged Beedle on by telling him you had his box! ; )
So i'm in the back country this weekend and won't be able to post until sun night or monday.
