She moves from window to window without a light since she has dark vision.

A bunch of those thugs cornered us and then the dottari arrested us. We'd have paid a fine, but that bastard, devil-worshiping judge decided we ought to be made an example of and sends us to his buddy Kossrani back there. Or sells us, maybe -- I wouldn't be surprised if money changed hands. Been in there for a couple weeks. Nicolæ looks alarmed as Nessa falls and immediately moves to help her up. He would ask if she was alright, but as noise would be detrimental to their cause, he hopes the look of concern on his face says all he needs to.

Hmm, he thinks to himself. But the right noise now might be just what we need. He pulls a fleck of wool from his cap and makes a gesture toward the rooftops to their west. His fingers move quickly like a running figure and he barely whispers a verbal component. Suddenly the sound of running footsteps seems to echo hollowly across the thatched roofs. A slight "oof" sound as if launching into a leap and then a loud "thump" on the other side of the gap and the sound continues heading north over the rooftops.

Alias is made, but sheet is not finished yet. He's an illusionist, so he'll definitely have ghost sound. Added a dotted blue line to indicate the direction the spell is travelling. His Int modifier is +4.

Leora gives a thumbs up to the creative prisoner who cast the spell, and an idea strikes her to help with the charade.

First, she waves her arms, shooing the remaining prisoners towards the shadows to hide. She then looks at Dom, draws her rapier, and shakes it at the mysterious noise coming from the roof, hoping that he can still understand her hand-waving. If the other people still come by the alley to investigate the noise, Leora and Dom can pretend they are CCG and chasing whatever is on the roof. If some of the prisoners don't manage to hide in time, they can lie and say that they are escorting them.

Leora hates this silence much more than the magical silence. She would feel a lot better if she'd be able to take a drink or say a prayer, but the sounds of either one might alert whoever is nearby.

Dukkan mutters to himself as the prisoner trips. Of course it doesn't get to be this easy. He's more than a little surprised when one of them helps salvage the situation with the illusory sound, and he's pretty sure he catches "Lena's" intent.

To the escapees, he mouths silently, "Hide." As he quickly gets into position he notes the direction Kiri is hidden, and holds one hand palm-up toward her. As much as Dukkan would love to settle this with steel, maybe there's another way...

I moved myself into position, and if they don't chase the ghost sounds and instead come to us, Dukkan will act the part of a Queensman pursuing an escapee.

"Come on, let's get them!"

Several voices come as the guards, or militia members, or whoever they are, move in the direction they heard the sounds going.

Everyone waits, wondering if they've gotten away clean...

"I'm really sure I heard something from over here though... guys? Come back... Guys? Argh."

Someone is walking towards the alleyway!

I applied a circumstance penalty.

A young man in the red and black armor of the queensmen comes around the corner, and stops short when he sees Dukkan.

You head towards the court house, I bet he'll loop south and go back that way. The two of us will head that way too, but a few blocks over. We'll trap him between us. C'mon Devon, let's go. Leora/Lena waves the real Queensman back in the direction he came from and starts walking southward, as if they're really going after the imaginary person.

Jessibel approaches Sabrina in the dark safe house, her mostly-sheathed rapier giving off the slightest of glows. She high-fives her frenemy, compliments 'Samantha's' competence and bravery during the rescue, and quietly reminds the Sarini scion not to remove her mask. She then casts prestidigitation to refresh her own disguise, again dying her hair red and adding the faint white hint-of-a-scar to her face. Next she orders the ex-slaves to line up before giving each a quick magical cleaning to at least get rid of some of the filth, sweat, and stink clinging to the men; then she alters the spell's focus to pour some heat into the tired, cold men.

As her magic warms the escapees, Jessi evaluates her own performance during the mission. Lacking seems to be an appropriate descriptor. She’d gone off-script early when the dwarf, Kossrani, suspected that Leora had opened the main doors not to cool the place off but to admit more people. If her charm person spell had affected the guard she’d targeted, the rebels would’ve had a 7-on-2 advantage over the dwarf and remaining guard, but, of course, it had failed her. After getting whacked a couple of times by their foes while dealing no damage in return, she’d raced out of the building to (hopefully) cut off and put to sleep the fleeing guard in the covered courtyard before he could rouse the sleeping second shift; it was a small wonder she hadn’t instead drawn the unwelcome attention of a dottari patrol.

This rebel stuff was hard, likely thankless work. Jessi decides then and there that she needs a little ‘Me Time’: She’d speak again with the Vashnarstill twins about maybe visiting the Tooth and Nail tavern one night soon.

EDIT: I really thought part of our plan was to leave a cache of food and other supplies at the safe house, but I'll be damned if I can find that anywhere. I guess they go hungry 'til Lena/Leora arrives with her trail rations. :)

Ah, that's fine, there can be a stash there. One thing to keep in mind when evaluating the combat performance of a Bard is not to neglect Bardic Performance, if you will pardon the wordplay. At least one or two of other people's hits would probably have been misses without the +1 from that, so all that damage is 'yours' as well as the +1 to damage on hits that would have been hits anyway.

Leora, I don't think I determined where the safe house was relative to anything else, so we'll just assume it's where you said it was.

The queensman is really just a boy -- you'd be surprised if he's over 18 -- and he looks naive and eager for both action and gold. "Uh, yeah! Let's do that! I'll go there, and if he shows me where the gold is, I'll make sure to split it with you!" he says with a wink.

He runs off in the direction Dukkan indicated, and you realize that you've gotten away with this ruse -- again.

You are able to make it to the safe house easily, with the freed mercenaries, rattled by the close call, being even more careful with where they put their feet.

She looks at the two young ladies on one of her passes by the window. She notices that Jess is doing a good job of making everyone comfortable, and Sabrina looks excited to be involved on an adventure. Good jobs both of them. Jess did well with the planning. Sabrina handled things well too. She didn't lose it when Dom took of the dwarf's arm. That shows some mettle.

"Good man!" Dukkan winks back at his 'fellow' Queensman, and watches him run off. Dummy.

Inwardly breathing a huge sigh of relief, the half-orc rounds up his charges, and says to Kiri and Leora, "Shall we?" He's tight as a drum on the trip to the safe house.

When his group arrives at their destination, he looks around the room, counting heads once, twice, a third time until he's convinced everyone made it there safe. He then allows himself to smile, not the predatory smirk he uses as Dukkan, but something with some real happiness in it. "Whew! That got a little more interesting than we planned, but here we are. Hope we didn't worry ya," says Domitius, eyeing up each of his fellow Ravens in turn.

It did look like a nasty spill." She waves away his concern in much the same way and so he turns back to the group and stands up, now that he has caught his breath.

She turns to Tinker and hugs him instead of shaking his hand. "Thanks, we wouldn't have gotten away with it without you. Why do they call you tinker? Do you fix stuff?"

"I've got some trail rations and water, and I think we stashed some food here too. Help yourselves, rest up. Oh, if you want a little wine or ale, I have some too. As long as everybody keeps quiet. Tinker exclaims in surprise at finding himself embraced by a pretty young lady. He chuckles, pleased with the attention and returns her hug gently, patting her back too often like someone unaccustomed to hugging. He was not much to look at, as Nessa so gleefully pointed out, but he did pride himself on being good at what he did. He bobbed his head, nodding to confirm Leora's question.

"Da, da! I mean, yes! I can fix weapons if they are damaged or even make them if I have the righta materials. I dabble with the alchemy. Imma calligrapher and I can scribe scrolls too." He looked around eagerly. "Do you have something that needs repair? I don'ta have my tools, but I can see what I can do. Or maybe some parchment and writing supplies? I like to stay busy. Yeah, sorry about that. There was recent influx of gorgeous new images and a lot of them were from Hell's Rebels. This NPC had a few different images, so I thought I could get away with using this one. Tinker probably shouldn't be this good looking, but I'm apparently too vain to post under an ugly face. The only other ones I liked were either too fair to be Varisian or too burly to have an 8 Str. XD

Crafting tonight?:
If Tinker can procure some parchment and writing supplies, he would like to scribe his Crafter's Fortune to a scroll or alternatively cast it to work on some weapons or alchemy. I bought the proper implements, but I expect they are not on his person.

Craft roll: 1d20 ⇒ 13
It's a -2 for not having his proper tools, and then +11 for Spellcraft. Other bonuses are as follows:
Craft (Alchemy) +9 (would make an acid flask)
Craft (Weapons) +8 (for repairs)
Crafter's Fortune will add another +5 if I use it on alchemy or weapons.

Though she can't see in the dark, Leora listens near the window during her watch. They did do well today. So many things could have gone wrong, but hadn't. The Salt Works workers could have refused to let them in, or seen right through the papers Davina had forged. The prisoners could have been hurt or sick and not able to get out. Kossrani could have blown her cover as a worshiper of Cayden Cailean. But none of that happened. It had all gone just fine. She wished she'd gotten a chance at Kossrani, but seeing the way he swung his mace, it was probably good that she hadn't gone toe-to-toe with him.

To Dom she says, "Yeah, let's start filtering back into society and out of Old Kintargo."

When dawn arrives, Davina asks Dom for her Alchemy Kit. She prepares her extracts for the day choosing Long Arm and Expeditious Retreat. She hums happily to herself as she takes the required time to prepare for the day.

Once she finishes she asks the group, "I'm inclined to take it the boat back today. I can't do it myself though, I'll walk back if everyone else is going that way. Either way we need to get moving as quickly as possible."

Good thing there's no chance of BOOM with extract preparation.

Nicolæ is only momentarily disappointed over a lack of supplies as the conversation shifts to talk of translations and alchemy. "Happy to! Leta me see... I speak six languages counting Taldane, which is frankly the one I speak leasta well. My notes on alchemy were in my old spell book, but I think it will come back to me once I can put pen to paper again."

With nothing else to occupy him, he takes Laria up on her offer of wine and noshes on a bit of food before he curls up somewhere for the night. Hating to let good magic go to waste, he casts Crafter's Fortune on himself anyway, hoping he will find something worthwhile to use it on in the next 24 hours.

In the morning, he prepares his spells right away as his relief over being rescued has given way to concern for Lady Isa. "Can we go by my place firsta? I had a small room renta near the Artisan's Guild. The landlady will have renta ita to someone else by now... She likes me though, so I think she will have my things. Isa should be somewhere near there and she's never been on her own this long... I hope she's ok!"

Worried that people will be looking for him, he does his best to use prestidigitation to change his coloring and appearance to look more common and everyday. There was little he could do about his accent, so he resolved to only speak if it was necessary.

This post assumes that Jessi and/or Forvian can talk Davina into allowing the prisoners to return to the Nest and join the rebellion.

Jessibel merely smiles at Forvian's keen guess. "As I said before, it's a long road to our destination, and we'll have earned a cup or two of coffee when we finally reach it. I think that once you've spoken with Laria, most of your questions will have been answered."

Before slipping into the streets, Jessibel retrieves her dagger from Mallus (unless the strix elder asks to keep it), outfits Forvian and his men with some of the chain shirts, maces, and crossbows taken from the Sallix mercenaries, and uses prestidigitation to color her hair and armor basic brown and change the hues of the escapees' clothing a bit as well. She lends her rapier to Forvian (just in case there were any witnesses who saw 'Jenvara' during the break-out). When the mercs' maces prove too heavy for her to finesse, Jessi opts to rely on her dagger and coin shot spells for self-defense during the trek back to Villegre.

After telling the others to be careful, she and Forvian gather their group together and prepare to slip into the streets of Kintargo. After returning the wand of CLW to Leora, the young noble smiles and whispers, "See you all tonight, if the gods are willing."

EDIT: I'm thinking the group consists of Jessi, Forvian, and three of the escaped prisoners.

As soon as Jessibel, Forvian, and the other three escapees entered the Long Roads Coffeehouse, Laria immediately set up a meeting between herself and the four men. She told Jessi that the dwarf minstrel Turl had dropped by to speak with her and was currently below in the Nest.

When Jessi reached the subterranean headquarters, she found Turl touring the place, examining and mentally critiquing the place’s architectural engineering. Before Jessibel could even say a Hello!, Turl demanded, ”Let me see your noodles, lass.”

”I beg your pardon!” the girl replied in shock and confusion. The dwarf smiled wide and chuckled.

”Your arms, Miss Jessi,” Turl explained. ”Lady Lydia told me of a certain ‘noodliness,’ as she termed it, prevalent inside the reformed Silver Ravens…especially amongst its female members. Show me your biceps.”

”Oh—noodliness!” Jessibel replied with a giggle before flexing for the dwarf. ”There!”

”Where?” the dwarf drawled, a mischievous sparkle in his brown eyes as he stepped forward to gently pinch Jessi’s upper arm with his thick fingers. ”Ah…hmm, yes—positively al dente. That means ‘Hard as bone’ in Dwarven.”

”Why do I not believe that?”

Turl didn’t reply. Instead he asked, ”Tell me—do you have trouble carrying more than just a tune?”

”Planning on adding comedy to your act?” Jessibel inquired a bit sourly.

”Mayhaps,” the dwarf said with a smile. ”Allow me to continue. You remind me of someone I once knew—an acquaintance from the days of the Chelish Civil War. Don’t give me that look! Wasn’t all that long ago, leastways in dwarf reckoning. Anyhow, there was this dainty half-elf freedom fighter—Bellasomething, I forget exactly—but folks called her Silverbelle. Was a bard—like you. Had some natural talent—like you. Pretty little thing—prettier than you. Not as flighty as you either, which is saying something, considering she had elf-blood in her.”

”Point?” Jessi demanded, folding her arms crossly in front of her chest.

”Ah, yes. Point being, the willowy lass wasn’t much in a fight and got winded wearing even the lightest of armors. She learned a special sort of bardic magic…she became what’s called a Silver Balladeer. Wore armor made of mithral, wielded weapons forged from mithral, cut off her noodly arms and replaced them with clockwork ones crafted entirely of mithral. Actually, I made that last bit up. But mithral’s a fine metal, lass, light yet strong. I don’t know the whole of it, Miss Jessi, but this Silverbelle learned to infuse mithral with her bardic magic and it made her more powerful. I wonder if Lady Shensen had any records on Silverbelle or Silver Balladeers before the Silver Star got burned down. Or maybe you should ask Rexus if he found any mention of her in those old Silver Raven documents he’s been translating for the past couple of weeks.”

Jessi’s jaw dropped at the dwarf’s mention of what was supposed to be a secret known only to the Silver Ravens’ officers. Turl shrugged and said, ”Your redheaded friend likes to talk…almost as much as you.”

Jessi scowled. Then her scowl deepened. ”Wait a minute. If this bard mixed her magic with mithral…why wasn’t she called Mithralbelle? Why wasn’t she a Mithral Balladeer?”

Finally, it was the dwarf’s turn to go on the defensive. ”Beats me; maybe since Kintargo’s called the Silver City, she chose silver as her motif metal. But mithral’s better…and it just so happens that my brother is a mithral exporter and could give you a good deal on any you might need for topnotch lightweight armor and weapons.” Turl grinned and shrugged. ”You benefit from the deal, my brother benefits from the deal…everybody benefits! Those are the best kind of deals!”

It was very early in the morningwhen Kiri woke Mallus up, she'd let him sleep as long as she dared but given that they were the two most distinctive members of the group she felt they needed the cover of darkness to make it safely to the coffee house. She shook Mallus gently and the strix man woke up instantly.

For a moment Mallus looked around in confusion, seeign the humans, and might as well be humans, around him, sleeping, he had an initial reaction that he'd never fully shook, a desire to attack and kill the hated people. Then he spotted Kiri and remembered where he was, his feathers ruffled as he mentally shoved the near instinctive hatred he possessed back where it belonged, in a deep, dark, vault in his mind. He gave her a questioning look and she gestured towards the exit silently. With a nod of understanding he rose and threw the cloak on she handed him. Together they pulled their hoods well forward and started for the exit slipping away quietly into the night. When everyone awoke for the morning to make their own way back the pair were gone.

Kiri and Mallus barely made it to the coffee house before the light began to show in the alleys. She knocked on the back door quietly in a pre-arranged series of pauses and short and long taps. The door was opened and the two were gestured in quickly before the door shut once more after less than a minute. Kiri knew her father wasn't going to like where they were and she planned to discuss what to do with him once they were safe. She led the way to the passage down and then through the hidden entry to where they were basing the rebellion from for now. She threw back her hood once they attained the bottom of the stairs and looked around before leading him to the area they'd set up to eat in.

She gestured towards a seat and began together together the food they had stashed down here, putting together an impromptu breakfast for the both of them before she sat and said, "I know you don't like it below ground, I don't either, but it is the only truly safe place to stay for the moment. We need to figure out what you'll do now. We stand out far to much to expect you'll go unnoticed if they go looking for you, there are only a very few strix in the entire city." She sighed and the air seemed to magnify the sound a bit as a breath of air was moved by her talents. She looked up in annoyance but said nothing.

I'll handle the post from Jessibel about her meeting with Thurl after they return to the Nest a bit later, as there are events that would take place before that.

Return to Tinker's lodgings

Shortly before Tinker and Leora reach the boarding house at the Iudeimus tenements at which he was staying, a screech echoes in the air, and a hawk flies down to land on Tinker's glove.

They are able to retrieve his belongings easily, as the landlady has kept them safe, although she did find it necessary to let out the room in which he was staying. "Sorry, Tinker. With Varl Wex moving out, I have to maintain my income by keeping as many rooms occupied as possible."

Since Kiri and Mallus are the first ones back to the Coffeeshop, they experience this first:

When Kiri leads her father into the hidden entrance, she is immediately met by Treep, the youngest of the Fushi sisters. "Miss Kiri! Come quick! The ceiling caved in on Korva, she's hurt bad!"

It turns out a section of wall in the storeroom (the southern-most section of the Nest) collapsed, with rubble falling on Korva who was playing Towers solitaire.

DC 10 Heal check (Can be made untrained, and take 10 is OK):
Korva is unconscious but doesn't seem in immediate danger of death. She broke her leg and perhaps a few ribs, and may have passed out from the pain.

Knowledge (engineering) DC 13:
Odd, there were no signs of structural instability when the team first inspected the Nest before they moved into it.

Knowledge (engineering) or Disable Device DC 15:
There are tool marks around the broken wall -- was this sabotage?

Perception DC 15:
What's this? Hidden near the collapsed wall, you find a hammer and chisel, sized for the hands of a halfling, with marks suggesting recent use.

Kiri's attention was immediately caught by Treep and she listened intently. Looking back at her father she said, "Come, I can use your help papa." She made her way to where the wall had collapsed and took a moment to assess the damage done to Kova. She sighed in relief as she said, "I think she'll be alright for now, it seems she badly injured but in to the point of dying. She had no knowledge of engineering and was to distracted to notice anything out of the ordinary. With a deep breath to calm herself she asked Treep, [b]"Can you get your sisters? Are they here? We need to get Kova out from under this, carefully."

Mallus and the three other Fushis work to begin moving the stone slab crushing Korva's legs. All of them working together manage to free her, and her sisters carry her carefully to a cot.

About an hour after Kiri arrived, she hears a moan and a soft whisper from Korva's cot. "Kiri? Oh goddess, what happened... I can hardly breathe... and my leg! Oh my leg!"

Korva is now conscious but disabled.

About the same time, Davina, Domitius, and any mercenaries they decided to bring with them (if any) arrive by boat.

When Tinker explains his background, Leora replies "On the bright side, I guess you could say you found the right group of free thinkers in Kintargo."

After Tinker's business is taken care of, and they are walking back to Longroads Coffeehouse, Leora is relieved that there are no issues crossing Bleakbridge, though she hates handing her money over to the government agents, just to travel to another part of the city.

"This is Longroad's Coffeehouse," Leora explains once they arrive. "Want any coffee or pastries or anything before we head downstairs to where we're staying? If she's around Leora introduces Laira Longroads, the halfling proprietor to Tinker.

Once they are done, Leora leads Tinker to the store room in the back of the coffeehouse, and opens up the secret door to the Wasp's Nest. "There's no wasps down here, it used to be a secret temple to Calistra. Most of us who you met at the Salt Works are staying here, along with the Fushi sisters - they're tengu who were living in the sewers. Make yourself at home!" There used to be a map of the Wasp's Nest, but I'm not seeing it now. From my vague recollection, there's one area for sleeping cots, and another area where Davina has been doing some alchemy and building and Leora was brewing some beer.

Leora is about to show Tinker around and introduce him to anyone he hasn't met yet, when she notices the debris on the floor. "Hey, what's going on - what's with the rubble all over?" Seeing Kiri and Mallus tending to someone on one of the sleeping cots, Leora hurries over to help and make Korva comfortable however she can.

GM - I think this is how the groups split up: Jessi, Forvian, and some prisoners went in one group. Davina and Dom went with as many prisoners as wanted to tag along in the boat. Kiri and Mallus went separately. Leora and Tinker went together, with any remaining prisoners going with them.

She motions to Dom and quietly points out the tools and the chisel marks on the wall. "Who would want this wall to come down and sabotage us? We may have someone working here that doesn't want us to succeed."

Leora is able to determine that Korva's leg is broken in two places, and she has a broken rib. She can probably set the leg and use a healing spell to help it knit back together, but the rib is a little trickier. If she had the resources of the Temple, or even a healer's kit, it would be easier.

The rest of the team arrives and discovers what the others have already learned.

The healing magic helps Korva some, but she's still in a lot of pain and not able to speak very well with the broken rib causing her agony every time she takes more than the shallowest of breaths.
