You see the guards speaking -- their lips are moving anyway -- but no sound is coming from that part of the building.

Dukkan lunges forward, stabbing with his falcata in a feint, then slashing upwards to grievously wound Kossrani's shield arm. The dwarf looks a little pale as the half-orc presses the attack.

He gets even angrier as Sabrina dances behind him and stabs at him with her rapier. Though the wound she deals him is shallow, it further weakens his resolve.

He steps away from Dom, towards Jessibel, and his lips move, but no one can hear anything he says since he's now inside the radius of silence. It was probably something rude, anyway. No matter -- his swing is weakened by his loss of blood, and Jessi avoids the heavy mace easily.

The guard at the doorway charges forward to join his boss's attack. He manages to get past her guard and slams the mace into her shoulder, but it was only a glancing blow. 3 damage to Jessibel.

The woman who shot Dom before moves forward and attempts to hit him with her mace, but misses.

Mallus follows Leora's instructions and backs away from the guard, who, perhaps believing what Leora said, makes no attempt to hit him. Instead he goes after the spellcaster. His mace crashes into her side, throwing her off balance and causing intense pain. 6 damage to Leora.

Finding himself next to Kiri, Mallus mutters to her, "Kiri, beth wyt ti'n ei wneud yma? Wnes i erioed feddwl y byddwn i'n eich gweld eto! Pwy yw'r bobl hyn?"

Strix:

"Ow," Leora grunts in pain, as the mace smashes into her. She glances over at the others near the silenced area. She wants to help them focus and take down Kossrani, who is probably the biggest threat. But she knows someone has to keep this guard occupied for the moment, and she seems to be in just the right spot to do so. She strikes at the guard in front of her with her rapier.

Kiri glanced at Mallus as he spoke to her and replied quickly, "

She looked back at the fight for an instant as she said, "Fel ar eu cyfer," she gestured to the others as she began gathering the winds once more, "maen nhw'n fy ffrindiau." Boo to not confirming, but I'll still take the hit. :-) By the way, something I've had on my mind is that I'm kind of hoping to, I guess you'd say “play up” Dukkan's orcish nature, try and make him seem more fierce/feral/etc. Just am effort on Dom's part to put some separation between the two personae. Jessibel keeps up her chant, like Dom unable to restrain her Inner Goofball when Kiri makes the sneeze noise.

“Bruises black, bruises blue.
Ugly wounds will cover you. Bless you!”

In terms of combat moves, however, the girl hesitates, totally lacking in confidence to try anything, feeling certain that she'll fail spectacularly. Choosing the option least likely to blow up in her face, the bard tries for a lucky stab against the mercenary nearest her.

Jessi also takes a step to her left, just in case someone would like to help her fight the guard or possibly flank the dwarf.

Leora and Davina, together with the blow that Mallus inflicted earlier, bring down the guard at the edge of the salt pit. As he falters, he loses his balance and topples into the pit, landing with a sickening crunch 30 feet below. The prisoners below begin to realize what's happening up top, and start to shout things like, "Hey! Get us out of here! Help us!"

Dukkan's warrior instincts catch the briefest moment when Kossrani, weak from loss of blood, inadvertently lowers his guard. His heavy blade is singing through the air instantly, and chops down through Kossrani's shoulder, cleaving the dwarf's mace arm entirely from his body, leaving an enormous, bloody wound where the dwarf's shoulder was a moment ago. Kossrani blinks in bewilderment, as if wondering how this could possibly have happened, then slumps to the floor, already spewing a massive pool of his life's blood onto the floor.

"Boss! Damnit! We're F+$$ED!" the woman guard says, backing away from Dukkan carefully until she reaches the door. She fumbles with the door handle behind her, holding her shield up in front of her as she pulls the door open. The other guard takes advantage of this -- he backs away from Jessibel, then starts running for it.

Sabrina screams, "Oh no you don't!" and runs past the bleeding body of Kossrani to attack the female guard. Though her fencing instructor would have been proud of her form as she attacks, she manages to inflict only a superficial wound.

Mallus moves to where Jessibel dropped the dagger she'd offered him earlier, and picks it up. "They'll wake the other guards!" he says. "You friends of my daughter seem capable enough but do you really want to face four more of them? Or a dottari patrol?"

GM: I'm operating under the assumption that for a bard's inspire courage to work (To be affected, an ally must be able to perceive the bard’s performance--CR, p. 37), they'd need to be able to perceive her for the whole round (No continuing IC as a free action and then running outside, for example). If I'm wrong, then Jessi would burn another round of bardic performance to help the others finish off the remaining guard.

Leora is frustrated as guards try to flee. She considers her options but doesn't like any of them. Davina is doing great helping the prisoners. And shooting the fleeing guard with her crossbow would probably wake up the sleeping guards, if she somehow manages to aim and hit him. She's too far away to use most of her spells, and the silence spell will take awhile to cast.

Despite her reservations, Leora draws the wand of silence and moves so she can see down the hallway and begins casting the spell again.
Please move Leora's token so she can see down the hallway where the guard is trying to escape. Thanks!

Dukkan finds a perfect opening and his wickedly curved blade takes the guard's head completely off. Her body collapses and her head lands in a barrel of salt nearby. Everyone's ears are spared the sound of steel cutting through flesh due to the silence still in effect.

When the ladders fall down into the pit, the prisoners cheer, and start pushing and shoving to try to be the first ones out.

Kiri, you can't hit the remaining guard from where you were, so I moved you to a spot within 30 ft where you have a clear shot. You'd have to take burn to hit him at that range, though. Do you want to? The guard's behavior may be different depending on whether he's injured or not.

Leora is thrilled that the fleeing guard sounds more like he's running away than waking up his allies. Having no idea what lies around the corner, she lets the silence spell take effect. It will at least make it so anyone in that room won't hear them coming...

With that, she runs after the guard to see what is around the corner and finds herself in the middle of the most recent silence spell she cast. Once she realizes that the guard is still fleeing, but there is no one else in the room, she waves at Dom, Kiri, and Sabrina in a "come here" motion, and holds up one finger, hoping they will figure out her crude attempt at communicating the situation.

Dukkan, the slightest bit unnerved by the totality of the silence spell’s effect, looks around, and notices that Jessibel and Davina are both gone. Wonder where they went. For once, it can't have been something I said, he thinks to himself. Gods save anyone who runs afoul of those two.

The half-orc looks around at his remaining comrades, and gives a triumphant snarl to Sabrina that was supposed to be a reassuring smile. Flashing a nod and a thumbs-up at her and Kiri, he runs to pursue the fleeing guard.

“Poka ne vykhodya, ty?”

If I checked the map correctly, I think I can get right up on that fleeing guy’s tail. If someone can position me, let’s say I’ll put Dukkan right behind the guard, i.e. in a straight line with him and Leora, so that I don’t give cover if Kiri moves to take a shot. Pity opening a door doesn’t provoke, but at least it’ll slow him down…

A lockbox in the front room, easily broken into or opened with a key on Kossrani's person, contains 67 gp, 423 sp, and documents that show that, besides selling salt to the Thrune government, Kossrani was skimming off the top to sell it on the black market.

Dukkan feels a breeze rush past him, and sees the guard crumple to the floor, battered by a force that could only come from one person he knows. Walking over, he toes the body with a boot. “Nice shot,” he says without turning around, glad to be out of the silence effect.

Opening the door the guard was trying to get through, Dukkan nods toward the opposite door, leading to the barracks. Putting on his mask, he grimly asks, “Shall we regroup and relieve the next shift?”

I think Jess and Davina should rejoin us as quickly and quietly as possible. Dukkan will go to the gate, and when the ladies show up, quietly suggest they go back around and meet up with us. (I’m concerned opening the gate will be noisy enough to arouse suspicion, and give the game away to anyone still in the barracks.)

I’m wondering, do we care if Kossrani was skimming? Maybe we just hold onto that info, and leak it later if we see a value to it?

Jessibel again frowned at Domitius...or Dukkan, as he now often referred to himself. The young woman knew damned well what 'business' her friend was referring to. After all, she'd been the one to ask just how far her friends were willing to go in this raid to ensure there were no witnesses, no pursuers. Dom and Kiri were prepared to be ruthless; Leora had a mean streak when it came to Thrune supporters after the Thrashing Badger had burned down, likely on Barzillai's orders. Davina--Jessi wasn't sure about her feelings on the matter.

Jessibel hadn't voiced her own opinion on the matter, either. She thought she could be ruthless with enemies of her beloved city, but now that it came down to killing sleeping mercenaries, she found herself balking. Did the second shift of guards need to die? No. That part was simple enough. Did they still represent a potential threat to the escape of 16 rebels and freed prisoners between the salt works and the designated safe house? Hell Yes--If but a single merc awakened and raised an alarm...it seemed fairly certain to Jessi that less than the whole 16 would survive to see the next morning as free citizens.

Davina returns to the main building. She scoops up her crossbow and puts it away. Stopping in front of a door, she points to it. "We still have this room to look through to make sure there are no guards in here. Then I suggest we head out the front door and get gone." she whispers.

We could always let the skimming information out into the world. Maybe people will think Thrune did him in because of the skimming or Thrune will think his allies did him in because the cut wasn't big enough. Grab the masterwork gear at least.

Leora gathers anyone who is injured around her, making sure to include the prisoners, and heals them. Since Jessibel seems in pretty bad shape too, she heals her using the wand.

If there is time, she checks the now-freed prisoners to make sure they aren't sick or in need of further medical attention. "Are all of you alright? I have a little bit of food in my pack, if you'd like." She passes around some of the trail rations she'd brought along. Too preoccupied with taking care of the prisoners, she doesn't notice the conversation about the remaining guards.

With Jessibel's dagger-stares and Davina's words, Dukkan flinches. It's slight, probably nothing the prisoners would notice, but when he says, "Yes, ma'am," his voice and manner sound closer to what you think of as Domitius than anything he's said all night. I just hope we all live to not regret this...

Unless you need me to open that door, I'm still going to go over and keep guard on the barracks door, readying an action. Gods save these clowns if they come out here looking for trouble.

"I'm alright, I just need water, and I imagine so do the hooms down in the pit. By the gods, it feels good to stretch my wings out! I don't think I could fly any better than you can, right now, they muscles feel cramped as all hell."

The human prisoners, seven men and two women, argue over who gets the dipper next, but no one gets violent. After taking his turn with the dipper, one of the men, a grey-haired but imposing man answers Jessibel's query. "I'm Forvian, miss. What's your name? I didn't think anyone would be fool- I mean, brave enough to risk the wrath of Thrune to rescue us. Did someone send you?"

Davina opens the door easily -- it's not locked -- and finds a scene of disarray. There are signs this once was an office -- a desk shoved against a wall, cabinets fallen into disuse -- but a series of filthy cots on the floor shows that this is where the prisoners slept, when they were allowed to.

Dukkan stands guard outside the sleeping quarters, but the guards inside make no sign of stirring. He can hear them snoring.

Dukkan watched the door to the barracks, his sword clutched tightly in his hands. No one would have ever confused Victorio Sarini for a kind man, but even then, Domitius hadn’t been exposed to the levels of hardship and cruelty the workers in this facility had. That these soldiers were willingly parties to this made Dukkan eager for their blood. A (small) part of him was grateful Jessibel and Davina had been there to stay his hand. In his youth, the prayers he had been taught had been to Gorum, who had no use for mercy or forgiveness. He smiled a tight smile into the darkness, and thanked the fates for putting him in the company of those with better natures than his own.

As the group readies for its exit from the compound, Dukkan glares at the door one last time. Your lucky night, boys. Rejoining his comrades and those they were rescuing, he quietly asks, “Which group would you have me with?”

Though her statement is vague, she knows having a good fighter like Dom around in case of trouble, and will be good to have a third person to help herd the prisoners to the safe house.

I keep having to look it up myself. :)

"Very well, Lena."

Turning to Kiri, Dukkan asks, "If I go with Lena and Jenvara, that leaves our group going below... a bit short-handed." He looks over at Davina, then back to the strix girl. "Can you get your father out with the group going through the sewers? I'll feel better knowing you've got their backs."

Davina is getting an itch between her shoulder blades that says we have to move. It's probably my imagination, but we shouldn't stand around here anymore. Guards could wake up or a patrol could come by.

Jessi then starts picking up chain shirts and carrying them out the front door and toward the boat in the sewers.

I think someone said something about trying to make it look like this was the work of either the black market people that they were selling salt to, or the work of Thrune himself? Anyone doing anything in that regard?

It sounds like the consensus is to have Dom, Kiri, Leora, Mallus, Forvian, and three other prisoners -- ones who think they can handle being stealthy -- going through the streets, and the other four prisoners with Sabrina, Davina, and Jessibel in the boat. Am I right? If that's the case, I'll need stealth checks from Dom, Kiri, and Leora. You can take 10 and use aid another or spells if you want. The trip to the safe house is relatively short, but I will do an encounter if the rolls come out that way. The prisoners take maces or crossbows, and Mallus and Forvian take chain shirts, temporarily, if you'll let them.

Kiri listened intently to the conversation, she knew her preference of escape route and she assumed her father's as well. Neither really wanted to go through the sewers, they were strix and enclosed spaces simply didn't agree with them. As the discussion dragged on Kiri finally spoke up, gesturing to herself and Mallus, and said, "We will go with the surface team, I don't really like those sewers and would rather not be confined within them unless absolutely necessary." She looked to her father, "Unless you would prefer to ride the boat instead of walk."

"Quick, put on some armor if you want it, and take a weapon if you know how to use it," Leora instructs, assisting anyone with putting on the armor they've claimed off of the guards, and passing out the maces and crossbows to those who want them.

At first, Leora had been relieved that the fighting was over, but there was no time to relax before they found themselves creeping through Kintargo's streets towards the safehouse. She was thankful that she's wearing her Queensmen armor and not the noisy scale mail. While she is willing to help the former prisoners try and sneak from shadow to shadow, it's harder than it looks to show someone else where to go and what to do without making much noise.

Taking a dagger from his belt, Dukkan cuts the CCG armband from his disguise, grimacing briefly as the knife bites under the leather armor.

”Kossrani here is going to help us with one last detail. Isn't that right, tovarich?” Walking over to where the severed arm lays on the floor, Dukkan places the armband in its hand, staging it so it looks like the dwarf had forcibly removed it from Dukkan. Sizing up the scene in a fair mimicry of the way he'd seen Sabrina's father look at works of art, he said, “There, perfect. Many thanks, korotyshka,” he says as he bows deeply, one time each to the arm and the body to which it was once attached. Turning to the Ravens, Dukkan smirks, “And now I'm ready to go.”

"Sewers? Sounds horrific. I don't want to be down in a stinking tunnel filled with who knows what."

I'll roll for Kiri, Mallus, Forvian, and the prisoners, then.

Street:

As the Ravens and their rescuees sneak through the night, Forvian and his followers are still weak from the punishing work they were forced to do. As such, they are not as quiet as they could be. At one point, one of the prisoners, a sturdy lady named Nessa, trips over a broken cobblestone and lands on her face, making more noise than is healthy. Sure enough, as luck would have it, Dukkan, Kiri, and Leora hear someone from the next street over saying, "Hey, did you hear that?"

"Eh, probably a stray cat or something."

"Cats don't say, 'oof'. I'll check it out."

You each have one round of action before whoever it is comes into view. The NPCs will take their cues from you.

Sewers:

The slow, quiet voyage through the darkness is uneventful, and the group reaches the sewer grating closest to the safe house with ease. The prisoners climb wearily onto the street, then into the abandoned building, finding a place where they can all lay down next to each other, using each other for heat sources. "Much obliged for the rescue," one says to Jessibel. "Once we're rested and fed, you'll find we're pretty useful if this is the kind of thing you do often."
