Thanks GM, I saw the 18 and got excited before realizing it wasn't an 18 on the die.

Frustrated that her rapier can't get through the lemure's flabby flesh, Leora decides she'd better stick to something she knows will work. Like making sure Davina won't die from the devil's twisted claws. She steps back and lays a hand on Davina's shoulder, saying encouragingly "Hang in there, we'll get through this!"

Davina cries out in pain, and doubles over. She swipes at the lemure with the dagger again. Then she carefully steps away from it. Ouch that hurt. I can't catch my breath to say anything.

Kiri was not happy, these pathetic sacks of sludge wouldn't stay still and be hit and she had about enough of it. She pulled together another burst of air and sent it flying at the devil that was now not close enough to make her worry about her compatriots. Yet again the blast of air plowed into the water well short of her intended target.

“That’s enough out of you, sludgy!” Domitius has no desire to see this thing maul his comrades again like it just did to Miss Eradon. As it clambers out of the muck, it’s met by a swing of his blade.

The creature looks badly wounded from the combination of Lucius's musket ball and Dom's powerful hack with the falcata.

Jessibel continues to chant her improvised song, and moves forward to give it a target besides her wounded friend, while still focusing on defending herself. Inspire courage continues, Jessibel moves around to be adjacent to the Lemure and continues total defense.

Lydia is still up.

Unsure of further means to poetically describe "I'm out of first level spells and have been reduced to tossing cantrips", Lydia just shoots another Jolt with a frown on her face.

Lydia manages to finish off the creature, which was already on its last legs -- not that it had legs, really -- with a jolt of electricity.

Jessibel hops back as the last lemure falls apart, half of it sliding toward her boots, half dropping back into the sludge pit with a plop. She peers past Dom at the half-elf sorceress.

"Nice!" she gushes. "That was totally your kill, Lydia! Well done!" To Dom and Lucius she teases, "Better luck next time, boys!"

Jessi then starts circling the sludge pit on the left, asking Kiri to join her. She looks around for anything of value or interest. The strange chains dangling from walls to pillars seem to have her particularly baffled.

Davina leans against the wall breathing heavily, "Well that was "interesting". Lydia, we should grab some of that sludge to study." She takes out her notebook and starts making notes about lemures, how much claw attacks hurt, and starts a list of things she should bring on adventures. Once the notes are done she starts digging around in her pack for a bottle or vial to take samples with.

"Alright! We got em!" Leora cheers, now that the devil things are dead. Or whatever happens to devils when they die.

Before everyone wanders off, Leora notices that everyone is a bit worse for the wear after their encounters with the lemures and the grimmels, or whatever they were called. She tries to think of a better prayer than last time, but doesn't come up with much. "Be healed!" she says, calling upon the power of Cayden Cailean.

She finishes her notes as Leora heals everyone. She notices all the commotion near the pit, and tries to see what everyone is so distracted by.

I rolled a 19 so I added the inspiration to the roll after I previewed. Which helped ever so much, not.

Searching the further recesses of the badly-damaged rooms finally reveals what you were looking for -- the abandoned safehouse of the Silver Ravens. There isn't a lot left, but you do find a pile of three crates in the northeast corner. Interestingly, there's a few old pillows and cloths arranged into a little nest, just about the right size for one of the grimples you saw earlier, or some other tiny-sized creature. The way it's laid out like a bed makes it seem unlikely that it is an animal, but rather some kind of intelligent being.

The first crate contains a large amount of old clothing and leather armor that has mostly rotted away with time, except for one exceptionally well-made suit of lamellar leather that seems to have barely noticed the passage of the decades, a composite shortbow, a well-made light crossbow and a silver morningstar, a cloak embroidered with elven runes, and a pouch containing a dozen pearls.

DC 20 appraise:
The pearls are worth 100gp each, and the crossbow and the morningstar are both masterwork quality.

The second crate contains a locked iron coffer. I don't think anyone has disable device, do they?

The third crate is packed tight with old, musty straw, but sifting through this reveals a treasure -- six silver figurines of ravens, exquisitely detailed.

"Let's take a look" Davina walks to the pile and examines the items.

While she is there she takes a closer look at the bed. She wants to see if she can tell if it was made by a grimple or something else.

With the fighting over Kiri began to assist her protege in searching for anything of value. It seemed that her apprentice had become a bit to focused on finding valuables and not enough on watching where she was going which caused Kiri to shake her head in exasperation. Still, she watched to see what happened and if "natural consequences" reared their ugly head. If not she might just have to make some on her own.

"Wow," Leora says, marveling at all the stuff that the Silver Ravens left behind. Davina really had an eye for identifying the things and figuring out how much they were worth. "And we can just keep it all? I wouldn't mind the little crossbow, I don't have much in the way of ranged attacks." She rummages around in the rubble and debris to see if there are any bolts for it.

I noted that Davina took the mwk silver dagger from earlier and that Leora took the mwk light crossbow. Anybody want anything else?

Looking at the state the building is in, "I don't think anyone has been down here for years. We should be safe taking this stuff. I can give you some bolts for the crossbow Leora." She hands Leora 10 crossbow bolts.

The armor would be a nice upgrade for me. I don't want to claim it if someone else can use it though. I do plan to be melee, and good armor is on the wish list.

Jessibel is wandering around, staring with rapt awe at the chains for some reason, when she unwittingly steps off the edge of the pit and goes tumbling into the filthy water.

She barely manages to keep from completely submerging herself, and struggles out immediately, but she is drenched from waist to feet. She immediately begins cleaning herself with prestidigitation, not wanting the foulness to be in contact with her body for one moment longer than necessary. She steadily cleans her clothing as the rest of the party searches, and by the time they've found the crates and identified the items therein, she is fully clean again and very thankful for magic.

Lucius follows looking at all of the things down here with a bit of a greedy eye before remembering what he was doing was more important. "So if the silver ravens did roost here should we consider cleaning this place back up or not?"

I notice Lucius has a +6 in knowledge (engineering).

Looking around, Lucius notices that a lot of the load-bearing walls of this basement have collapsed over time, causing the piles of rubble on the floor. It's not likely to come down very soon, but in the long-term, this is not a suitable site for occupation, at least not without a lot of rebuilding.

When she saw Jessibel fall into the water Kiri began laughing. The fluting laugh continued until she had finished cleaning herself off and the strix said, "Next time pay attention to where you're going when you search for loot, bad things happen when you don't."

When Jessibel pulls herself out of the murky liquid, her eyes are running from the smell and her face is red with embarrassment. When Kiri laughs at her, the color in her pale face deepens and she grinds her teeth.

"I was not searching for loot," the girl says brusquely. "I was trying to figure out what use the chains have or had in this whole...(she spreads her arms toward the brown pool) set-up."

Now to see if the brat comes out or if we see a little maturity from our budding noblewoman....

As Jessibel cleans the putrid filth off her lower body with prestidigitation, she uses the spell's opposite power (to soil items) to make a puddle of the brown sludge plop onto the floor near Kiri, just missing the strix's feet (talons?).

Domitius offers an arm to Jessibel, and if she takes it, hauls her out of the sludge.

As Jessibel starts to lose her cool, Dom comes over, and in a low voice, says, “That’s exactly the kind of reaction that she wants, don’t cha think? You gonna come down off the stage with smoke comin’ outta your ears any time someone heckles you?”

Jessibel takes a deep breath like she's readying herself for a loud, prolonged rant...but then she masters her roiling emotions...barely.

"You're right, Domitius," the noble bard says through gritted teeth. "It's just that I've been mauled by mangy curs, puked on by a stupid grimple, laughed at by another grimple that I thought I'd run through but didn't even scratch...and now this. Maybe I'm not cut out to be an adventurer."

Sounding for all the world like a scolded child, Jessi mutters a quick apology to Kiri.

Dom shrugs a noncommittal shrug. “No one said this was gonna be fun and games all the time. ‘Least, they never said it to me. If we pull this off, years from now, they’ll talk about how that Aulamaxa girl faced all kinds of nasty s%^& right from the word go, and never gave up, never backed down.” He makes a show of taking a few exploratory sniffs of the air. “I just hope they’re not also saying she never took a bath…” He smirks, grinning a broad grin as he does so.

Davina asks Lucius, "Didn't Laria offer us the rooms under her coffeehouse?" She thinks for a minute, "I remember the deal being we did some work for her, and it was ours to use. That might be an offer we want to take. There are too many people coming and going at my house to use that as a permanent base."

GM did I learn anything more from examining the small bed? I'm concerned that grimples couldn't summon the lemures, and something else is waiting to jump out at us.

Kiri's laughter cut off abruptly as Jessibel conjured filth at her claws. Her demeanor went from amused to what could only be called vicious in the span of an instant. The only thing saving Jessi from instant "natural consequences" was the fact that Dom reprimanded her. She took a deep breath as she heard the young woman's lack of faith in herself and, after the apology, said to her, "You need to have more faith in yourself Jessi. You assume ineptitude where none is evident, you allow laughter and words to strike through your defenses," she sighed then, the strix wasn't sure why she found Jessi amusing but she did, "Life isn't easy, it's struggle and pain, but that's how you know you're alive. Learn to trust in yourself a bit more and check the attitude and you'll do anything you want."

Oh, missed that part. You can't really tell anything. Something tiny-sized seems to have made a little nest-bed-thing here, but you can find no trace of it otherwise, not even any sign of gnawed bones or seeds or any other sign that might help you figure out what made it.

"Thanks, Davina," Leora says, taking the crossbow and bolts. She winces at the sight of Jessibel covered in muck. Feeling sorry for the girl, she knows it easily could have been her to slip and fall in the nasty stuff.

"Anything else here? Did anybody find any more hidden doors that lead to basements with something worse than puking grimples and sludge and devils? Or are we good to head back to Laria's?" she asks, wondering if their exploration of the Livery is finished.


Female Android

Lydia stands stunned for a moment when the lemure is stripped from the mortal plane by her great arcane prowess. She snaps back to reality at the sound of Jessibel's gushing.

"Well, you know, all in a day's work for a sorceress." Lydia blushes slightly and smiles, but this dissipates rapidly when Jessibel falls into the sludge.

"Shelyn's grace, are you okay Jessi?" Lydia goes to help pull her up but Domitius gets there first (which is likely for the best, as Lydia is more likely to get pulled down than to be any of help).

As the group ascends from the cellar, Jessibel says, "As long as we're down here on Argo Isle, there's a few things I think I ought to take care of. Before we return to the coffeehouse, I want to stop by the address of the Kintargo Opera society and see about verifying this offer to join them, and also to let Giveni know I won't be performing at the Three Legged Devil for the foreseeable future. I don't expect all of you to come with me."

Lucius sniffs a bit at the smell of the muck feeling a bit more at home, but looking around at the crumbling foundation he shakes his head sad that this place couldn't become a home for them, but it was probably for the best. As they left Lucius listened to Jessibel before nodding. He figure that Dom and some others would keep her safe while the rest of them went back to report. "See you back at the temple then."

Jessibel felt flush with embarrassment at her clumsy--no, idiotic--plunge into the nasty water and her spiteful reaction to Kiri's laughter afterwards. Then she calmed down as she realized that only Kiri had laughed at or made fun of her...epic misstep. (Well, technically, Dom had ribbed her a bit, but that was to be expected and had happened after he'd said all the right things.)

The young noblewoman took a deep breath and offered Kiri a proper apology. "You're right in some ways, wrong in others," she quietly told the strix. "My life has been easy, until recently. This little venture has opened my eyes some. But I've never assumed any ineptitude or lack of trust in myself--on the contrary, I thought I'd acquit myself well. The reality has been a little...hard to take. Still...what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, right?"

To Dom she said, "A bath is the first thing on my agenda when we get back to the coffee house. Not a word of this to Sabrina, OK?"

Lastly, Jessi offered Lydia a wry smile. "Only my pride was hurt--I'll be fine after a proper bath. The smile fades as she asks a question that's been lightly nagging her. "Will you be returning to the coffee house with the rest of our group or continue to stay at Songbird Hall?"

Maybe we should split up the ravens if we are going different directions. That way we can get messages back and forth if we need to. I need to stop by the weapon shop again. I'm going through a lot of bolts. I can get some arrows for Jessibel as well. Does anyone need anything?"

Jessibel hadn't a clue as to how the little silver figurines worked, and as Davina explained their powers the bard's eyes widened in wonder.

"Those ravens will be perfect for me to communicate with my mother and grandmother, and for Lydia to keep in touch with her parents and the priests and priestesses at Songbird Hall...if she decides to stay with us, that is. I've got to stay with Sabrina to help hide and protect her from her father...and probably have to protect Rexus from Sabrina, come to think of it...so I'll be staying at the Long Roads for the immediate future."

The bard pays Davina in advance for the arrows she's promised to pick up, taking a closer look at the composite shortbow from the treasure the group had collected.

"Haven't picked up one of these since I was a child," the girl muses aloud. No need to mention that I almost accidentally plugged Lady Eldonna's poodle, Jessi decides.

At mention of Jessibel’s plan, Dom pipes up. “I wanted to go with ya last time, but kept my mouth shut. Not this time. Lemme ask, no way one of those two tasks can be done by giving a runner a note? No telling how safe the streets will be.”

As the talk drifts to the subject of the raven figures, Domitius asks, “What do these things do, anyway?” He’s in the process of trying to perch one on his shoulder like a pirate. Scrunching one eye shut, he says, “Arrr, Lord Thrune say me ship can’t put into port. Keelhaul ‘im!”

The half-orc’s face registers a sudden flash of understanding. With a slightly guilty look on his face, he admits, “I, uh, I just realized I don’t have anyplace to stay.” He gives a resigned shrug. “Never had to make my own arrangements before, y’know? Can you put me up, Miss Eradon, ‘least till I can figure something out?”

As far as bookkeeping matters, the only item I’ve got an eye on is the morningstar, and that’s if and only if no one else has a good use for it. I might have use for it as a “DR/silver-buster”.

Jessibel giggles at Dom's pirate impression. "It's nice having a bigger goofball than me in our party!"

"Getting back to your question--both places are in Jarvis End, not all that far from the Opera House. We could even call on Barzillai and tell him to go walk the plank, if you'd like."

Jessi's mouth drops open in shock when Dom asks to stay with Mrs. Eradon: she'd just assumed he'd stay near Sabrina and herself to protect them as he had for months. The girl quickly recovers her composure, however.

Of course Domitius wants time away from Sabrina and me--he's a free man now. His obligations to Sabrina and the Sarinis are over, and who could blame him for not wanting to look upon constant reminders of those days?

"The room is yours as long as you need or want it. We'll dig out that lock book when we get back. Then one of us can get started studying." she says to Domitius.

She notices Jessibel's surprise at Domitius' decision, but decides to say nothing right now.

I should make sure Jessibel is ok. There have been a lot of changes in her young life all at once. It can be a lot to handle.

Domitius’ eyes widen for a moment, and he fumbles with the raven for a moment, almost dropping it. “Yarr, Black Dom not be lookin’ to swing from the yardarm just yet. I’ll hold me tongue f'r now. Fer now. Yarrr.

Domitius is oblivious to the thoughts playing out between the two women. Domitius of Belkzen, now a free man in Kintargo? A thing like that. No, hold on, I was never 'Domitius of Belkzen'. I wasn't 'Domitius' until I came here and Old Man Sarini slapped that name on me.

Dom is rapidly lost in thought as he tries to remember life before his capture and enslavement...

"I don't think there's enough rum at Captain Davina's place for me, so I'll be staying at the Coffeehouse for now." Leora starts with a joke to keep up with Jessi and Dom's silly conversation.

But the meaning of what she's just said dawns on her. She'd nearly forgotten about everything else. The day's fighting and exploring had been the perfect distraction from the outside world. Her next words are filled with anger. "Because that @#$!*^% Thrune burned down my home."

A long walk off a short plank would be a good start... Like Dom, Leora too is lost in thought, though hers are more about the horrible things that deserve to happen to Barzillai Thrune.

As plans were being made on where to stay Kiri watched and listened to the discussions. She noticed Jessibel's surprise at Dom's choice and realized the young woman was even more off balance. She looked at Jessi and said, "You can stay with me if you like, you and Sabrina both. My home isn't much but you are welcome there as my apprentice and your friend by extension."
