Once the odd guard is not around and he makes sure no one else is that could over hear he motions for the other five to come close. Whispering his information as it was something he deemed they should know.

"I spotted a lone wolf watching the caravan from deep in the woods. With more interest then any normal wolf would. Could be someone we know, could just as easily be an enemy scouting us. The fey do have a way with animals. Thought I'd let the rest of you know."

It could be another lycan that was in on this or it could be one whose territory they had come in. Then again it could be as he said, a fey charmed wolf. Yet again it could be the companion to a ranger whose path they crossed. Many possibilities but all of them were best served by being ready and aware. Still in a few cases it was best for the other guards not to know, definitely not any of the passengers.

Take 20 on perception as usual. Make sure no eavesdroppers are around and none come near. ;)

Raze nods at the news. "Knew something was up. Didn't think it was a wilf, though."

Igdus is careful not to let anyone else overhear.

Do you want to approach the wolf now or just keep an eye on its activities moving forward? Do you want to tell Marya Darkeyes?

Rhun

Kate gives a sheepish grin, "Maybe I could switch my sleeping pattern as well? Sleep in here with you by day and stick together at night?"

She appears to be a young girl having some sort of crisis in her life but keeping a stiff upper lip about it.

unless issues are foreseen, when Tobar is used to night, he will place webs around well outside of the campfire's light range and will collect the webs just before morning to weave into clothing later. Any food items he catches would be offered to the other PCs and surplus (unlikely given the likely voracious nature of the party) would be offered to the normal guards.

By the end of this trip you will have a LOT of clothing for sale or use made of spider silk! At the top of the wagon where the party sleeps you could create a make shift shelf to store it. Half way through though it'll start to be a space problem.

Rhun looks thoughtful for a moment, then shrugs. "As long as you don't mind the rumors about your choice of bed partners." She winks, regretting that she'll have to sleep in human form going forward. "But, while I patrol, I am best at that alone. No offense, but it's dangerous in the woods at night, and I would be risking both of us if I tried to protect you at night while protecting myself. But we can spend 'lunch' chatting, and talking when I'm not patrolling. I'm certain you could carry on a better conversation that the mercenaries at least." She smiles.

Rhun, unlike the other weres, is used to working with non-weres and recruiting them into underground organizations, so every potential recruit is worth a few hours. It's often amazing what useful people you can pick up that others overlook.

Male Human Natural Werehawk Incanter 2

Can't speak for anyone else, but please do not make assumptions about my character OOC. That is a slippery slope that leads to nothing good.

He thinks for a moment as well as keeps alert before continuing.

"I can keep an eye on it. I don't see a reason to go after it just yet, sense we don't know whose side it's own. Dealing with it may provoke a situation and everyday we get brings us closer to our goal. Making any time we can get an advantage rather then a concern. It's hard to set up anything elaborate on a moving target. Unless they have an ambush site ready, but more of them will be around beforehand in that case."

He gave his point of view on things, they could take it or not.

I've seen several people post about eating the caravan people if they end up being inconvenient... That OOC was letting people know that Rhun is used to working with norms and not eating them, so they know what to expect later on. Please do not turn my 'this is how my character thinks for future warning' into 'your character is bad' thank you.

Rhun smiles. "Because, it means I am responsible for my life. I'm not sitting around hoping that someone else can protect me." She ignores the 'rumors' question for now, mainly to avoid laughing at the poor girl. "If I have to hope someone else can protect me, it means I cannot survive if someone doesn't. For example, if I happen to be in a caravan where people don't like me." She grins. "As I am currently, at least to some extent. Plus, it means I know if someone is competent at their job of protecting me or not, because I know what they should be doing. As much as I give the guards grief, they're not horrible. I've seen worse. But you know how men are, if you step on their ego a little, they try really hard to prove you wrong, and you get better results from them." She looks Kate up and down. "If you like, I can start teaching you some self defense. It is always good to know how to use a weapon or ones fists, especially out here in the wilderness, and we're not exactly heading to a major metropolis. Being a little more dangerous would not hurt you."

The Six

Training Kate

"Ok, so, the first thing we'll teach you is to use a knife." She takes a dagger out and spins it around, and then flips it a couple of times. "A good dager is well balanced." She puts her finger at the base of the blade, showing that the handle and the blade are balanced. "This makes it a versatile weapon. It lets you use it in close combat to stab people." She makes a few thrusts at empty air. "Note that my other hand is open, palm ready. When fighting with a knife, you're other hand acts as a secondary weapon. You can grab someone else's arm to block their knife, or punch them while they focus on your blade, or grab them and keep them from dodging the blade." She demonstrates each. "You can also slash with the blade." She moves the blade left and right, then reverses her grip and holds the blade along her arm makes a slash. "Holding it like this is a more defensive fighting style." Then she turns and flips the knife through the air and leaves it vibrating in a tree. "Finally, you can throw it through someone's eye. Be careful with doing that though, either have another dagger, or make sure it's your last enemy and that you take him down." She retrieves the dagger. "Now, you aren't ready for any of those, but you will be with practice. To start with, let's just do thrusts." She gives Kate the dagger, and teaches her how to do a proper thrust, how to get her body behind the point of the blade. "As females, we have more issues with strength than men, which is fair enough, we have easier times with thinking than they do, so it equals out. To do damage, you want to put your whole body into the thrust, and you want to do so without leaving yourself open. So turn your body sideways, that minimizes your profile, and makes you harder to hit. Then when you thrust, lean into the thrust, then you're putting not just your arm muscles into it, you're adding your back muscles, your leg muscles, and your stomach muscles, and all of those are much stronger than your arm muscles. Plus you're putting your weight into it, which is a multiplier." She has Kate thrust the knife into the tree trunk using just her arm, and also using her whole body to thrust. "See the difference in how solid the hit was? Now, practice for a few hours. Don't go for speed, just go slow, in fact, the slower the better at first. Teach your body the motions." She does a thrust with the dagger very slowly, almost dancing. "See? Your body will learn the motions better slowly, then we'll speed up after your body knows what to do. It'll be frustrating at first, but it's the best way to learn."

Male Human Moonlight Meditant 2

... A wolf that was watching the caravan with more interest than a wolf would naturally have?

Great. That was exactly what they needed it. It could just be a coincidence, of course, considering the fact that there were many different reasons as to why the wolf seemed to have such a fascination with the caravan. Including the possibility that the wolf was a bit more intelligent than the usual animal, and was fascinated by the civilised races. Yet Valar couldn’t help but shake the feeling that it was no coincidence that it was a wolf showing such interest in a caravan that had a high concentration of Lycanthropes.

Because of this, Valaronex was starting to get... anxious. He had come on the caravan because he fully expected there to be trouble, to be able to fight and aid his family in ways that were simply impossible before hand. Now through, with no signs of hostiles... the tension was starting to build, and the ever-present possibility of the Lycans becoming outed was growing. Combine that with Valar’s own secret... and he wanted to get this caravan sorted with, sooner rather than later. The fact he couldn’t approach anyone, not even Raze to discuss his secret... was really starting to dig under his skin.

M Human Shifter 2

GM & Valar:

would a sense motive on Valar be appropriate? I'm not sure if that last post by Valar was merely fluff or him looking for another player to engage his disquietude. Sense motive is a skill PCs can't normally use on other PCs so I am asking 1. was this Valar's intent, to create inter-player discussion on the topic, and 2. is the skill use appropriate?

Raze growls a response back at Marya, "We know she's out there. Igdus' got it sweetheart, don't sweat it".

Marya steps in closer to him and his shoulders stoop as she steps away. He approaches the rest of the Six. "Uh tomorrow she wants us to coordinate with this woman..."

Tobar glances at Valar and senses something... but cannot put his finger on what it is.

Rhun has Kate show her what she's gotten down so far, and nods. "Good work, now, don't think you're ready to actually fight yet. That takes time, but you're doing good." She tells Kate as Raze comes up. She tilts her head, and nods. "Certainly. Kate, if you'll excuse me? Probably something about patrolling."

Once she heads off with Raze, she reaches down and grabs a hunk of cheese and some bread as they step past the breakfast area. When they are somewhere more private, she takes a bite of bread and one of cheese. "Chu meephed shomthink?" She asks between chews.

Male Human Natural Werehawk Incanter 2

Igdus didn't like that. Marya only had as much authority as they gave her, the little she wolf should remember that. As for Rhun, he supposed things were going to come to a head now.

When she approaches as usual he makes sure no one and nothing is near by or with in listening distance. He wasn't going to make it easy.

"Go eat somewhere else if you have nothing worth saying as nothing said with something in your mouth is worth being heard."

Act like a child and be treated as one. Not that the children of his people spoke with food in their mouth. They quickly learned to swallow it before hand.

Take 20 on perception as usual and his periscope should be up. Also have no idea what Rhun said.

Rhun swallows. "You stated we need to talk to me during my meal time, Igdus." She says, after swallowing, her eyes dark and glittery. "Learn manners, don't demand my time during meals next time, or maybe ask instead of issuing commands. If you can't be bothered, then put up with bad manners in return." She says, her tone light, knowing the tone would travel significantly better than the words to curious ears. "Or better yet, don't frack up my identity in front of the humans that I spent considerable time working on, hawk. You and the others are too taciturn by half, and a sweet smiling face who is also dangerous is exactly what anyone who figures out what you are is going to look for if they figure out what you are. Now, say whatever you like, but let's end this conversation with you looking ready to bite a tree in two, and me looking like I enjoyed goading you. Next time you want to talk, get Vaki to use his bat voice to talk at night, the humans can't hear that high." Retcon last post, player was half asleep and got Raze and Igdus confused

Rhun swallows, and looks at Raze. "Raze wanted to talk during meal time, so deal with it, Igdus" She says, after swallowing, her eyes dark and glittery. "You should really learn manners, hawk." She says, her tone light, knowing the tone would travel significantly better than the words to curious ears. "Or better yet, don't frack up my identity in front of the humans that I spent considerable time working on. You and the others are too taciturn by half, and a sweet smiling face who is also dangerous is exactly what anyone who figures out what you are is going to look for if they figure out what you are. By the same token, if they twig to me, given I've worked hard to make us apparent enemies, they'll go to you. Now, what was so bloody important Raze that you couldn't let Vaki come talk to me by night with bat voice? You're going to frack up my cover." She pauses, and then looks from Raze to Igdus. "Oh gods, don't tell me you didn't realize? Frag, well, at least if you lot didn't twig to it, the humans sure as hell didn't. I'm guessing Marya didn't either, excellent. I haven't seen you lot since the council meeting. The Midnight Faction decided not to put all our eggs in one basket. I'm the outsider who doesn't like you, so if anyone gets suspicious, they come to me first. Now, I'm going to continue trying to piss you off, try not to let the humans know we're on the same side!" Her tone continues to be slightly smarmy, but low enough not to be heard by anything other than the weres. She then takes a bite of cheese and bread, and makes some meaningless sounds as if she's still talking through a mouth full of food.

The Midnight Faction is a group that has a seat on the Were Council that you all attended. They are not strictly all were, in fact, they tend to have more non-were than were members. However, they have no issues working with weres and have actively helped hide were activity. They are also involved in a lot of criminal activity. Their representative at the meeting was a big husky man in a full coat with a soft voice named Rhun.

Igdus did not react or show any expression, that pettiness was not in him. She didn't know anything about him and he was not going to give anything away, insults meant nothing and her disregard for secrecy was a growing weakness. He only watched and let her make a show, it served him. Her actions and words served him, being dispassionate was a common trait among his people. Shared to varying degrees, always to their benefit. Once she left and he was certain their were no wondering eyes or ears he spoke to the others in a whisper.

"That one is not half as smart as she thinks she is. I already knew she was of the kind. She has been changing out in the woods during her little patrols, risking us all. Ego or recklessness, which she just showed us yet again, she may become a problem."

He looks at Vaki.

"Your kind, your problem."

She shouldn't have given that away, another slip. He made one last point.

"If Marya insist then she and hers can patrol with that one. I will decline and suggest you stick her with the regular guardsman. That should keep her from changing and continuing to risking the lot of us."

Igdus says nothing more, he had no need to. His words could be taken or not. If he could detect and figure her out so easily, others could as well. Only a fool thinks themselves special, caution mistaken for arrogance. So be it, the world especially their world was brutal in it's lessons. Better learned at the words of another. He would remain cautious and watch, he had no faith in these people. Why should he, deceive your own and play meaningless games for what. No gain and cultivated mistrust, that was the result. “Huh, so that’s why she was acting so oddly.” Valaronex commented when Rhun tipped her hand to them about her actually being a Lycan and that they were set up to be opposites in order to ensure that if one group was revealed, the other would not have suspicion thrown on them... which Valar had to admit was clever, but wondered why Rhun was working alone in that case. Wouldn’t it have been better to split the party more evenly? If the guards were ousted, Rhun would end up having to work on her own...

Then again, that might be the intent...

“I think Igdus’ paranoia is rubbing off on me.” Valar said with a sigh and a shake of his head, even as he mentally vowed to keep a look out for Raze. His cousin welcomed him back with open arms, despite it being years. Despite the damage his father had done... and Valar was going to do everything he could to ensure he repaired such kindness. He was not a lycan anymore, but blood was blood.

Rhun grins at Marya. "So, Marya Darkeyes, daughter of Lockjaw. Excuse the personality of this particular visage, it's not as polite as the visage I wore at the meeting Grandfather Spider called, and it's personality is rather smarmy, but it's a visage that worked well for the mission I was given." She taps her chin. "I know I was to come in the second group, but the Shadows decided that sending me on the first group would serve better. As I am, as I said, not used to guarding others, a passenger was a better story. The Shadowmaster instructed me to pretend to hold the other's in contempt, so that if any one suspected them, I would be a natural selection to tell, thus giving us an early warning. By the same token, I was to use my ability to assume a non-Lycan animal form to provide cover if anyone merely saw someone changing shapes, to cover for them. Being able to handle silver in animal form without burning or hissing or screaming in agony is useful at times." She smiles, and makes an insultingly elaborate bow for any audiences. "Rhun Jin Rong, Representative of the Shadow Clan, at your service. Vaki can vouch for me. He knows I change my face as often as I change my mind, and my personality changes with each face. Although I don't think I ever told him I could change my gender." She grins at Vaki. "You still dating that werebear you were stepping around with last year?"

"It's not paranoia if your right."

Igdus taps his ear with a finger, without looking towards Valaronex.

Marya frowns, "Huh. Well, it would have been good if you told us off the bat. To be honest, I don't care what the Shadow Clan thinks. They did not throw their hat in the ring at that meeting and announce their interest. I suppose if you are their rep that's fine. If this whole thing works out we can debate who did what where and how much was contributed.

That still does not change the fact that you need to coordinate with us even if it doesn't look like you're doing so. I'll let you and the six work it out as to how best to do that".

She starts to walk away and pauses, "Not sure where you heard that bear rumor from but it's not true. I 'd appreciate it if you could remember their name so I can be sure to thank 'em when I see 'em".

Now the six and Rhun are alone together.

Raze shrugs, "We have not really been doing much perimeter walking. Igdus seems to see every damn thing there is to see and Tobar does whatever the hell he does out there. I suppose we had not given it much consideration except to set the meatbag out as a decoy. I figure with advanced warning we can handle pretty much anything and we should get it with the eyes and ears we have out there, plus you Rhun". He points back at Rufus who is making his way around the perimeter

Rhun shrugs. "Honestly, until today, I'd assumed you knew. I don't know if our message didn't get to your people, or your people didn't inform you. I just assumed we were all doing our jobs."

Rhun chuckles. "If I knew, I'd tell you."

After Marya leaves

"My eyes and ears are much better in an animal form. And personally, some of my friends are 'meatbags', so I think you and I have a different vision of what the caravan people are worth. My own Clan has many members, and most are not actually Lycan. We are the ones who clean up when a Lycan goes nuts, and having a bunch of non-Lycans helps with that. We're one of the big reasons the city hasn't declared a no-holds bar hunt for Lycans. Anyway, I prefer to keep the caravan people alive if possible, especially with proof that the Fey are active and hostile. I think we'll be happy to have as many weapons available as possible."

Raze holds up his hands, "Hey, who said meatbag was not a term of endearment?! I've been living in the city for a while myself. That's why Clenchjaw is pulling me back into the fold, he knows that I have plenty of experience around humans. Me and my cousin". He points a finger at Valar, "We have always been more positively disposed towards our human than our wolf sides". He pauses.

"Anyways, if we want to make this work we need to look like heroes, we can't look like heroes if all the human witnesses die. So even if we'd eat them for dinner tomorrow, we've got ta' put that all aside for now. Else we're risking our necks for nothing here..."

Rhun nods. "I understand, which is why we need to police our words, even in private. If you want to be heroic, you need to make sure they don't hear you discuss eating them." She grins. "Kind of takes the hero out of heroic."

“And just how often ARE you right?” Valaronex shot back at Igdus, even as he wondered how he heard it as Valar had been sure that he hadn’t been in hearing range at the time...

* * * * * *

“'Positively disposed' is putting it lightly.” Valareonx said with a sigh later that night, when Rhun revealed just who exactly she was, and why she had been sent as a passenger instead of a guard. Because she was working for a clan that technically didn’t send a representative to the meeting.... Talk about awkward.

“I mean from the sounds of it, your clan is probably the group that had to clean up after my Old Man Valerem after he lost it. After hearing bout what he did, I think you can excuse me for being viewing the beast a little less kindly than other Lycans. Especially as no one knows where the old bastard vanished off to afterwards.”

Rhun bites her lip before replying to Valareonx. "Usually we provide shelter to orphans created, pay off guards, or eliminate those that won't be bought off. There are occasions we do the council's bidding with regards to Lycans who can't or won't control themselves. I'm afraid I can neither confirm nor deny if we had anything to do with Valerem. You understand I'm sure. I can say that on the occasions we have to deal with someone permanently, be they human or Lycan, it's done professionally and with a minimum of fuss and mess and pain... Unless the council orders otherwise for some reason."

Male Human Moonlight Meditant 2

“Not surprised. I mean really, you call yourself the ‘shadow clan’, of course, your not exactly going to tell near-stranger rather confidential information.” Valaronex said with a loose shrug when Rhun said she could not confirm or deny that her people had done anything in regards with Valerem... and it wasn’t like Valar would believe her if she said that yeah, they killed him. Much as he disliked how Valerem turned into a monster... he was still his dad beforehand, and a great one... so he refused to believe he had been put down, especially as he knew how strong he was.

Male Human Natural Werehawk Incanter 2

"Sadly more often then not."

Igdus says coolly, turning to look at Valaronex his golden eyes studying him. Being right was not always a good thing. Their were reasons he did not share everything he knew or suspected. Knowledge is as much a burden as a responsibility. He would not forget that lesson.

Igdus listened to the others talk. This Rhun was a meddler and belonged to a false clan of meddlers. If they felt such a need to interfere with lycans positively, why would they not instead help in other ways or spread positive relations about other lycans. The bears had been accepted and they were no less vicious when enraged. Instead they remained in the shadows and took it upon themselves to play judge, jury, and executioner of other lycans without their clan's approval. The cast always dealt with their own, he doubted they were an exception among the kind.

He shakes his head, keeping alert. Assumptions and breaking the very words you spoke in the breath before. His low opinion of this false clan may not be baseless, he would not be quick to judge them. Yet he had to admit, he did not like much of what he had learned so far. They sounded more like killers and manipulators, perhaps to such a degree that even their own did not know the truth of them.

Taking 20 on perception as usual. Really don't want anyone to listen in on this. :)

Rhun shrugs. "After you've dealt with your 30th orphan, scared, wanting to know why mommy got ripped apart in front of them, or why mommy turned into an animal and ripped daddy and big sis apart and ate them..." She looks a little green around the gills. "You develop a distaste for telling anyone about what you see in my clan. So it's more than just loyalty to clan. We are monsters, if we let ourselves be. My clan knows this, I think, more than most. We don't pretend to be saints, we are thieves, sneaks, spies, smugglers, and killers. But we do aspire to rise above the monster that is in us, be it a Lycan monster or a Mortal monster. The Lycan monster is just easier to spot." She shrugs. "We have great hope for this endeavor, we would love to stop being the Shadow Clan, and step into the light, at least a little. Maybe the Twilight Clan." She smiles whistfully. "Anyway, are there any other questions you have before I spit in Igdus's face and turn and walk away in a huff to keep up my story?"
