Magnimar, a city filled with crime and oppitunity. The players each have an issue, most of them being plagued with nightmares of the city in flames and others having more personal problems. The one man with all the answer, the notorious Irthir.

The words of his companions did not sit well with Ostog. They reminded him of lost honour. Realising that this might be a tactic, he stayed his hand and listened ready for any development.

"We are hired, but we have had many employers. Maybe you have some room for expansion?"

The woman smirks as she looks over at Jerry and nods.

"Expansion was an idea, but I wouldn't have left her alive if that were the point, nor made a point to sell those foul pastries." she spits at the mention of them. "I hope none of you ate any. This story will make you sick." as she states this, she explains why she's here.

"You see, our lives in our kingdom below the scene we leave our children in spawning-pools outside of it. This way, the strongest survive and each generation remains strong. Recently, her family was unable to make any good catch for quite sometime and they came across the spawning pool." as she states this she watches your reaction before continuing as she lets the horrifying implication sink in. "Yes, her family was so desperate, they captured, slaughtered and ate our children."

At this point the woman struggled against her captor.
"I didn't know! I swear by Shelyn I didn't know!" she screams as her captor re-adjusts her grip. "I've begged, I did nothing wrong. It was my family!" after a little struggle, the Shark-toothed woman looks back to the group
"Once we discovered how the spawning pool was picked clean we waited until they returned, which they did. We had to sacrifice more children to make them believe they had made another catch, before we climbed aboard and killed her family in slow and painful ways I do not have the time to explain to you now." she states with a bit toothy grin "When I found her I decided to steal her identity and keep her around so I can keep up this disguise."

Jaidoh growls from the shadows:
While the family's acts may be horrible, her admission of sacrificing her own kind to lure the father in is unforgivable.

The father has answered for his transgressions with his blood, the daughter owes no penance. This monster, on the other hand, shall answer for those she has harmed, and what she has done.

Jerry tries to keep a stoic face and reveal no emotion, but the brutal and calculating evil is beyond his capacity to tolerate. He quickly turns his head feigning a cough so he can confer with his new friends.

He whispers to his colleagues:
"Dealing with such evil is something I can do, but I would prefer we end this threat once and for all. What do you say? This enemy seems formidable."

I am assuming the woman we were talking to and her body guards can hear everything we say considering she is right in front of us, or is at least smart enough to be suspicious of a whispered conversation, not smart to talk about killing someone when standing directly in front of them.

I speak in a normal voice. "You are fools, if we try to attack them the woman we were sent to check after will die and we gain nothing. Better to cut a deal so everyone leaves happy. Our employers concern is the girl, is there any way we can convince you to let us take her off your hands?"

Jerry nods his head.
"How about we leave with the girl. What is done is done. Today honor will have to take a hit."

Master of Gaming and Grognardia Current map

Sorry for the late response, been trying to mull over the situation. Basically there are many more creatures that have now made their prescence known. Including Sharks with two vestigial legs to walk on land with.

She smirks and gives a sigh.
"I have no interest in keeping this location or even those other women. As long as we keep this one to face trial for a full sentencing and our treasure, then we will leave this location and let you do whatever you want with this information. Tell your rulers or not, I do not care, but if I see you again I'll drag you all back to our city for the council to deal with you." she states simply as the creatures nearest to the restrained women release them and throw them towards you as they collect the various barrels nearby.

Though one was broken in a earlier fight with Rabe, the strange squid-like female that was behind their leader walks over, casts a spell and the barrel fixes itself.

Once they have all left the leader retrieves a conch shell that she had on her.
"I won't forget our bargain. If you wish to bargain again, blow this shell underwater. It will glow if I wish to speak with you again." she states as she looks up at the sky. "I may have a use for you in the future. The stars are not aligned properly." she states before taking the bound girl and kicking her off the balcony into the water, before diving in to join her.

The women you have freed are glad to be free and many wish to be escorted home. Most belong to the poorer areas of the city, but the Tiefling lives in one of the wealthier areas of the city.

Her home appears to be an exquisite tower shaped from white stone. The sign outside reads:
Dr. James Mender. Alchemist, inventor and city mortician.
She turns to you with a wide and happy smile.
"Thank you so much for bringing me home. I know my M- I mean, my employer will be more than happy to see my return. I was trying find some mutated fish that sometimes come into the docks for a new experiment he's working on." at this she gives you all a bow and smile before taking out a key to let herself in. "If you need anything, come back in the morning. Doctor Mender will have a reward for you and maybe even some work."

You can almost see steam coming out of Jaidoh's ears. It is all she can do to not attack the horrid creatures as they leave.

Once they are gone.
I am not a mercenary. I do not know what these creatures are, but to all someone who subjugates the will of others to live is an abomination. If you continue to bow to evil like this, then I may not be able to restrain myself next time.

I retrieve the conch shell from the shark toothed woman

"We could not have overcome the adversaries that were here. If you want to throw your lives away if a situation like this comes up again feel free, but leave me out. I was trying to maneuver us so that we could either get the girl without bloodshed or get the opponent in a position that we could attack with confidence of winning. However since neither of those occurred I will take what we can get while surviving. Let us return these women to their homes and then report to our benefactor."

I assist with escorting the women home and promise the Tiefling to return in the morning.

Once we return to our benefactor I report what occurred, that we could not rescue the girl without endangering our own lives and show him the conch shell.

Irthir listens intently and nods, understanding the situation.
"It was the right choice you did, but I can understand why you feel so helpless, however you cannot win every battle. It's also very disturbing what had happened there. I'll make sure the local authorities know what has happened." he states and looking at the shell he studies it curiously. "This could be useful. Especially if we need to find out more information to any other attacks going on or if monsters like the ones you saw start walking on the beach."

He states simply, leaving it there for you.
"You also mention the Tiefling girl? I believe her name is Aurellia. She was, like many of her race sadly, abandoned at the orphanage. Dr Mender donates a large sum of money to it regularly so he must've taken her under his wing and given her a job, but I don't take anything at face value." he stops and looks back to a book he was fingering through "I suspect he is involved in something darker, but I don't have any proof. He stays hidden in his tower and I have had dealings with him, bringing in unusual and strange creatures he wishes to experiment on. He also supplies the city with many potions to cure any disease. If you wish to work for him I suggest you be cautious. He will not hire you for anything outside of the law, but I suggest you remain cautious. Others have worked for him and never been seen again."

As you all take in this new information, the shadow dancer you've seen before appears before you all. She looks a little more pale than usual and then leans close to the Gnome and whispers something that makes him jump up in surprise. After a few moments, they manage to settle down and he clears his throat.
"My friends there appears to be some very strange goings on. If you recall the mercinary group you've had a run in with a few times in the past? The Crimson Banner. Three adventuerers who retired with a fortune and founded the group? One savage warrior, one knowledgable wizard and a shadowy scout? This was not their true size. Years ago there were five of them and they would do the usual things, save innocents, kill dragons and demons, raid tombs and all that stuff I'm sure a few of you have been wanting to do. Their last adventure they entered a area hidden in this city's ruins and only those three returned. The other two were a Paladin to Iomedae and the tickster of the group. They never returned and were declared dead, lost in the ruins after something long forgotten came after them and devoured the two."

Irthir pauses for a moment
"After they left, the entrance sealed itself, as if protecting them from the beast so it couldn't escape and left a featureless wall of stone where a entrance once was. I have been curious about this and set up a few scouts to watch the area and now it appears to have re-opened, but what it even more strange is the trickster of the group, a young gnome, came out. Horribly wounded, but stable for the moment. Her being alive and stripped of her equipment whispers that there is something even more foul about this group. For the mean time she is in a safe location of mine to recover, but I'd like us all to have a word with her in the morning if she's recovered by then, but there is a more pressing concern. Something followed her back out through the entrance. The first was what appeared to be a Dark Elf in the finest of clothing and then following at her command were two warriors and what appeared to have been the long lost paladin, but different. His face and body have been covered with scars, cuts and oozing infections. He didn't appear to speak, but just groan and wail unintelligently, following her orders. I do not know what is going on here, but I fear this may be linked to your dreams with what might happen in the future."

Sorry if I contradicted myself here, many of my ideas are kinda on the fly...

Strange, my update showed that you posted in the discussion page the other day but not here. I will be here for this campaign until you as DM say it is over.

After hearing what our employer has to say I state, "This seems more important then meeting the alchemist, perhaps on the same level as investigating the warehouse due to it being owned by the people in question possibly. I believe that it should garner our full attention."

That's strange. I'll post in discussion to get people's attention.

"I believe it is still morning. You can all go there now to try and sneak in as they are not the sharpest as guards. My people are trying to rouse the gnome and heal her wounds, but they've not seen such torture before. Physically she will be alright, but we can only imagine what kind of torments have been inflicted upon her mind." he states openly, clearly worried about these new developments.

Jaidoh listens as Irthir describes the happenings.
This is very concerning. Rare is the dark elf who has good intents in its heart. If this paladin is following her and covered in scars, then, I imagine, it is not the paladin at all. Perhaps it is his body, but not his mind. Perhaps it is no longer him at all. Or, perhaps this dark elf is good. Although I rather doubt this last option.

"I understand what you mean to never judge. That Hobgoblin you defended a few days ago has remained in town and seems to just drink his sorrows away. He hasn't caused any issues, besides some who start fights because of his race." he states, reminding the group of what happened a few days ago. Didn't know you were still around. I'll need to update the recruitment thread.

"It seems obvious, but do not want to move on them just yet. First I'd like to talk with the gnome to find out what has happened. They are also well guarded by the most elite of their men. Sorry, I am really lost as to what is going on at this point. If you have a good arcane caster in the recruitment, I would not mind stepping back. If the pace is going to pick up and we are going to have more cohesion, then I am good with continuing.

From the shadows, Jaidoh follows the others, uncertain as to what is to be expected next.

Master of Gaming and Grognardia Current map

I was aiming for the Mayor as that'll be where you'll get the new recruits. I'm hoping to speed up the posts here and get a better cohesion.

So Far:

After the fishery and reporting to Irthir you also learn that the founders of the mercinary group you've been rubbing shoulders with had gained their wealth and fame after entering a dungeon that sealed itself up afterwards. That dungeon has reopened and out of it came the Gnome who was one of the said casualties, bleeding and nearly dead whilst not long after her came a group of Drow, led by a female in silk robes with a spider motif and what appears to have been the Paladin, but now covered in scars, still armoured and his only responses to the drow mistress were in grunts and groans of pain.

"It would be better for you to see the Mayor first. He has concerns with something going on around the city. A serial killer that he's surpressed news about has been getting harder to track down, but he has a possible lead." he states with all seriousness "He also has a few people who are willing to join you on your investigation."

Yes, we will stop by the mayor's office to see what he has of interest.

She then turns to the large barbarian.
I thought Nidal had problems. This strange city seems to have just as many, only they are harder to perceive from afar.

Master of Gaming and Grognardia Current map

I'll finish the choice for characters tomorrow. I have a little time of work so I should be able to get the game on a good rolling path.

Ithir smirks at Rabe's comment.
"The city is anything but a simple life. The Mayor knows more about that than I do." he nods over to Jaidoh "Every city has many problems it hides, however events recently have made things in the city much worse. It could only be worse if the golem works were still digging up the ruins and releasing forgotten creatures from a forgotten age."

Master of Gaming and Grognardia Current map

IrThir gives you a golden coin.
"Show this to the guards outside his office. They will let you through." he states. The coin looks unremarkable, but when you turn it over the face changes from a human man, half-elf woman, elf woman, Tiefling woman, Orc man, Dragon, Fetchling woman, Aasimar Woman and a male Gnome who looks a lot like him. "There are a few new people in town who will join you to find this killer. I'll try to get to the bottom of this mystery and heal up the poor woman. Her physical wounds can be healed but her mental ones...who could say." he states sadly.

You notice as you make your way out that there is the Hobgoblin nearby, drinking his sorrows with his shield leaning up against the bar. His shield appears to be a massive tower shield with a crest upon it.

Knowledge Local DC 10:
The crest appears to be a old Molthune military crest. You know that Molthune have many different species in their army, including the milituristic Hobgoblins as part of their specialised units along with Nagas and Lawfully aligned Lycanthropes.

Master of Gaming and Grognardia Current map

As you continue on your way to the Mayor's, you find that people in this richer part of the city often avoid you and eye you suspiciously. Once you arrive and show the coin to the guards, they let you right through.

Inside the first room you see is a reception area with a few well dressed individuals, waiting to be seen. they all appear to be growing impatient and annoyed, only elevated when you enter and the receptionist there, a young elf woman with long golden hair and half-moon spectacles, lets you pass through right away to a private room. Only after the door is closed do you get a good look at the inside.

Sat in a large velvet chair a man dressed in fancy clothing with big golden chains sits there and greets you as you enter.
"Welcome! I am so glad young Irthir sent you here at such a short notice." he says with a big jolly smile, that fades as he changes the subject "I have had problems in the city recently. Some you have solved, but we have a killer in the city who is aiming at elves or half-elves in the poorer areas of the city. We recovered the latest body to be examined as our watch's search has been fruitless."

The entire time, stood next to him in this highly furnished room behind the grand desk is a shadowy figure with a large quarterstaff. He leers at you all and remains silent as he does.
"Oh, this is my advisor. Lord Blackthorn. He has been my advisor since my previous one passed away. Do not worry about him, he likes to advise a little more than needed." he laughs in an attempt to break the tension, but he continues to give you all a cold stare.

Male Human Barbarian(Superstitious)4 Hp:50[58]/55[63] AC:17[15] T:12 FF:16 Fort:6 Ref:3 Will:2[4]

I stand silently and glare at the advisor out from under my helm, my green eyes glowing. Finally I shift and say,

"So, what is it you want us to do exactly, we are not qualified to examine a dead body."

Master of Gaming and Grognardia Current map

"I believe you may all find something that the guard have failed to yet find. All we know so far is that the victims have either been Elves or Half-Elves that were killed in human-centric areas." he lets the fact sink in "I fear it may be some form of race killings and he has carved words into their flesh, but the guard and I do not know what it may mean."

As he explains this he makes his way to a side room and opens the door slowly, making sure the curtains are closed as Ioun stones light up the room.
"In here is the body. We also have a few people who may help."

Inside in a plain stone room. Clearly this room was recently created with no windows for this very occasion. Upon the slab is a body if a young elven figure, however the face is smashed in quite horribly and the chest had been torn into like some-kind of vicious animal. The body's bloodied clothing was put to aside along with several possessions, including a few items such as belt-pouch with coins, a wooden holy symbol and a dagger.

There are also three other figures in the room that you meet with.

Now the new characters can describe themselves and introduce themselves.

Male Kobold Unchained Rogue 2/Unchained Summoner 2

Among the new figures examining the body is a very strange sight. And not just his features, but his placement within the room - specifically, nearly over the body, clinging upside down to the ceiling and looking down with slitted yellow eyes. The eyes shift to eye the new arrivals, followed by a black-scaled draconic snout turning to look them head on. The black, tight-fitting garb covers much of his body, but several things stand out about him... particularly, the small katana strapped to his back and a small collection of various things - charms, fetishes and even some black scales - hang off his waist.

For a few moments, he stares absolutely silent at the new faces, as if studying them quietly before making any sort of move. Finally, however, he speaks, the scratchy, high-pitched yip of his voice clashing with his somewhat threatening appearance. "...you're late. After all I have heard regarding your exploits, I expected a quicker arrival." The kobold turns back to the body, eying it for a moment before looking back.

"And greetings. Welcome." he added, as if adding it on as an after-thought, before returning to his observations.

A young, heavily tanned woman stands over the body, examining it closely. Her cloths are mostly brown, with a few red accents, under a open cloak of deep crimson, and she looks chipper and excited, despite her rather gruesome work. "Water?" she looks confused for a moment, before her eyes light up with comprehension. "Ah, yes! I always forget about things like that. Magic is just so useful and fun, especially simple spells like that, that I always think of it before more mundane solutions." she walks over to any water basin set up for such an occasion, and says "Prodesca" while waving her hand over it. Any murkyness from previous such washings disappears, and she runs her hands through it a few times, before repeating the spell for the next user. She then proceeds to shake hands with anyone willing, while saying, "I have no problems handling dead bodies, we will all be one someday anyway, I just think it's rude to shake with dirty hands."

Using Purify Food and Drink to purify the water, she doesn't plan on drinking it, but I think it still counts.

Kikiri stared back at Rabe for a little bit, before letting out a quiet exhalation. "...very well. My name is Kikiri Shadowscale, of the Shadowscale tribe. You are Rabe, yes? And your companions... Jerry and Jaidoh, hm? The fey stain- apologies... Ithir -spoke highly of you." Kikiri stared a little more at Rabe before huffing lightly. "I shall reserve my observations of you until I have seen you more firsthand."

Kikiri leaned down, still clinging to the ceiling with his lower claws and tail (somehow) as he placed his hands into a strange contortion, as if passively meditating. "I am not here to solve the murders of these elf touched... though I will say, he is sloppy in his execution. I have been searching out you all in particular. I believe you are related to the vision our obsidian sensei has given me. Whether that is true... remains to be seen."

Kikiri motioned with a nod to Tariel. "I cannot speak for her enthusiasm in this. I presume she is simply acting out of interest in the dead."

Being ever wary of outsiders, after years of prosecution in Nidal, Jaidoh moves into the shadows and watches the interchange between Rabe and the new people.

La'vriel looked at the odd bunch of people surrounding the dead elf who looked as if he had been mauled by an animal, his own skin almost as pale as the body before him. He adjusted the grey veil covering his face once more, uncomfortable with it and the rest of his grey clothings still being somewhat damp. He also was uncomfortable by the strange lot of people in the room, having read about some of the races he now for the first time seeing them for real. Though a small dragonlike creature clinging to the ceiling was unknown for him.
Finally La'vriel removed his veil for it seemed to be the right thing to do for an envoy on official business in the home of a thassilonian magistrate, and took a decisive step out of the shadows of the corner. About to speak his well thought of string of words, out of the corners of his eyes La'vriel noticed one of the strangers, a certain 'Jaidoh' by the informations he got from the mayor, stepping into another dark corner of the windowless room - and simply vanishing.
I'm La'vriel, Mordant Spire envoy, eh... where did she just...?
Great... La'vriel thought. What a botched introduction. Great first day in the job just getting better... At least he had remembered speaking common, not Azlanti as had been usual on the Spire for adressing strangers.
If I may have a closer look at the body? La'vriel asked, stepping toward the dead elf, trying not to touch anyone. He then adressed the heavily tanned woman with the crimson cloak, Tariel, absentmindly shaking hands with her.
Did you discover something, Mylady? Looks like an animal did it, but first impressions can be deceitful. Those clawmarks at the shoulder look strange, but I can't put my finger on it.
Heal: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11
Then he reached for equipment of the dead elf, treating them carefully.
And how about his equipment, and his clothes, or whats left of them?
Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22
And there is his holy symbol...
Knowledge Religion with free Inspiration: 1d20 + 1d6 + 6 ⇒ (3) + (2) + 6 = 11
La'vriel felt the fabric of the cloth and the wood of the symbol under his fingers, then showed the cloth to the huntsman.
Did you know wool can have very different structures depending on the diet of the animal? he said, feeling the material. If you feed them with... he started lecturing, unconsciously switching into Azlanti for the delightful details of that fascinating topic.
