Pooka leans into the conversation to share what he gathered at the beer garden.

"There is an inquisitor in town. This person seems to be the one leading the charge in the accusation, and it sounds like it isn't the first time this one has done this. Many of the locals actually seem to be willing to believe in the pathfinder's innocence, but no one is brave enough to stand up to the inquisitor. It probably doesn't help that there is another rumor that the inquisitor is actually a demon. We should definitely try to find out more about this person, though I am not sure it is in our best interest to speak directly with them just yet."

"As far as staking out the farm, I agree, that is a good idea Xull. If everyone agrees, we can certainly do that, though I would favor a good nights rest after 3 days of travel. We have only just arrived, and we still have a few more days before the scheduled hanging. Lets see what things we can uncover tomorrow, and tentatively plan to stake out the farm tomorrow night. Again, that is just my suggestion. If the group decides to do it tonight, then count me in."

"Pooka be small and wearing of heavy armors," says Xûll half-sympathetic, half-teasing, "Is probably best then for Tired-From-Trail-Pooka-Bladespinner to rest tiny, weary head. Cyrus'd by Augustus-Aeyon-Though-Everyone-Call-Him-August-For-Short! Count Xûll's as an each-way vote. He's happy to rest and let Pooka, but happy to head out. Luna, leading Pooka down the stairs, crosses the Tap Room. Half asleep by the front entrance, a man squats on a stool. He man is as large as Xull, but instead of a well-muscled physique, he is mostly large-boned and a bit flabby.

"What you doing?"

Pooka, not knowing if the man is sleep drunk or just a bit daft, points to Luna, who looks mighty uncomfortable. Recognition slowly dawning on his face, nods his head.

"Keep your head about you, been a a couple of murders. Hate to have more."

With that Pooka and Luna exit to take care of business. A few sniffs, and couple of 360s, and Luna is feeling like a million gold pieces.

"However, all me is wanting to be having is breakfast and glass of fresh milk. Would you like to be returning to chair and stopping having sticky nose in business of everyone in town, or are we to be having problem?"

Pooka stands up out of his chair, leaving his breakfast sitting on the table. Luna eyes it suspiciously now that her master isn't paying attention.

"Just who do you think you are to go around throwing wild accusations? Never mind the corners you have already cut in the legal process for the men who are to hang in the next couple of days, but you stand here now, only having laid eyes upon us for mere moments, and with naught but a handful of rumors at your disposal, already seek to label us as murderers and send us to the gallows? Do you only label us as pathfinders to add to your collection of murder hobos that you have sent to the gallows? It must be easy to throw that accusation around and eliminate anyone you please under the false pretense of your misguided justice. Watch your tongue, before you incur the wrath of the goddess you claim to revere, and her Justice seeks you out instead."

Pooka takes a step forward again, chest puffed out and cheeks red with his rising ire.

"Do not think that we will be so easily cowed and bullied. We are simply travelers, hired guards for Sun Desin, a druid working towards his own ends. Go find someone else to push around with your haughty accusations."

Pooka turns and sits down, facing away from the woman, his shoulder hunched. He looks up at August and Xull, and cannot hold back his smile any longer. He winks at Sun, and waits for her reaction.

When he and his companions are eating breakfast, Xûll lowers his voice, "We are not to be making friends with that one, me thinks. After a quick huddled conversation around the breakfast table, the Pathfinders quickly devise a plan for this morning’s activities.

Augustus rises from the table, grabs a piece of fruit, casts a longing look at the meal before him, and heads out the door to follow the Inquisitor. Please let me know if he takes anything to improve his stealth. I will make some rolls on his behalf later today.

Sun decided to head to the general store. As he exits the Tap Room, the bright light of the morning sun blinds him. Blinking rapidly, he inhales the fresh, country air and begins to walk to the store. His joints gently creaking and groaning, he eventually works out the kinks and strolls merrily to the store. As he passes small groups of locals are huddled together whispering and pointing at him. He can clearly over hear, ”Erika said they are Pathfinders.”. As he nears the store, he realizes that it is much like Augustus described.

Orug's General Store is one of two permanent business here in Dawntown. This sprawling shop occupies three large storefronts on the main road. The center room is the general store. The east room holds stored goods, an office, and the living quarters of the owners, Orug Foram, and his wife Tessa Greehagh. The west building is Orug's barbershop. Sun make his way over to the half-orc co-owner of the store, Orug, and his half-elf wife Tessa. There is a small gathering of hangers on encircle them. As Suns approaches, he can clearly hear the end of his story, "So I sees, the murderes with me own eyes, run outs to clobber thems over the heads, and BOOM, one of those nasty Pathfinders do wonked me from behind. I teels yea, I would have strung them up meselves if I didn't receive that cowardly blow. Oi' whos you be?" Sun can clearly see the hanger-on bored expressions, as if they have heard this story ad nausea-um.

Pooka, Luna looping happily by his side with crumbs of bread on her muzzle, heads deeper into Dawntown. As he passes small groups of locals are huddled together whispering and pointing at him. He can clearly over hear, ”Erika said they are Pathfinders.”

As befits his station as the village’s mayor and sheriff, Tobias’s house is the largest private residence in Dawnton. This sprawling, two-story house is well made. Pooka hesitantly approaches the front door and gently raps on the knocker. A well-groomed halfling opens the door, chewing with can only be his breakfast. With a wary eye, ”What can I do for you?”

Xull makes his way out of the Tap Room, nodding to Hopnar. His full breakfast of eggs and potatoes, finished by a tall glass of milk settling nicely in his stomach makes his usually spry stride a bit slower. With a long walk ahead of him, he quickly regains his normal country stride and is quickly lost in his stream of consciousness, replaying his conversation with the inquisitor. Did he say everything correctly? Is she really the cause of all the trouble? Why do my knuckles still hurt so much? As he reaches the outskirts of Dawntown, he passes small groups of locals are huddled together whispering and pointing at him. He can clearly over hear, ”Erika said they are Pathfinders.”

Well outside the town limits of Dawntown, Xull finally reaches the outskirts of Otto’s farm. The farm covers 10 acres of land that are presently unplanted and a farmhouse at the center of the fields. A line of trees along the west side of the house forms a windbreak. Xull can see a powerfully built, clean-shaven man in his late thirties leaning on a shovel. As Xull approaches, the man shouts, Trespasser! Best shove off before you get yourself into trouble.” At this he drops his shovel and readies a sling, swinging it around to build up momentum.

"Please, please, please! There is no need for this. Those people who are to be hanging are being friends of mine," says Xûll, turning slightly so the man can see the enormous curved sword and massive hammer strapped to his back, but making no move to grab them, "Me is to be either saying final farewell or finding out what is really going on here. But you be having no reason to be trusting me. I am to be hard worker, and you is being farmer. Me is not knowing of farmers who are able to be refusing of strong, capable hands.

"If we can be talking some, I will be helping you with any tasks you be having on the farm," Xûll hopes the farmer will either slip up at some point, or be more willing to talk with someone who is helping him out, "That way, you are to be getting your business done quicker, and me is to be understanding why friends are being killed by town's hangman, yes? But work first. Chatting is being for later. I am thinking you are to be making ready for sowing of seeds, yes?"

It sound like you are having much same troubles with this one, yes?"

Xûll picks up a hoe and starts to help Otto with the furrow (or whatever) that he is digging.

"Are you knowing of good work song?" asks Xûll, realizing that he had been humming an old Shoanti war chant, "All me is being knowing is battle tunes. Still, both typings of songs are being rhythmic and good for to be attacking - whether foe be dirt or soon to be dirt."

Xûll looks strange fully armed and armored and working on the farm, but the man simply hadn't thought to take any of it off. His backpack sits sullenly against a fencepost.

"Do you be having informations about men who are going to being hanged?" Xûll inquires between scoops of the hard, northern ground, "Town is being filled with rumors and hearsayings. You are seeming to be man who is knowing what he is knowing."

The young man brushes the stray hair from his face and nods in agreement to Xull, quickly taking the potion the shoanti had mentioned. Oddly, moment later, he enters back into the room and moves his breakfast bowl on to the ground for Pooka's companion, and the slips back outside.

Outside, the young man keep his distance back from Ekira and hoping to blend in with sparse crowds and wandering villagers. August also keeps his eyes open for any shops which he may be able to slip into in order to quickly grab something to help him both move silently and keep hidden in the wake of the severely angry inquisitor.

With each step, the young man can feel the shifting weight of his great-sword strapped to his back, and he can't but wonder if he will shortly have to use it on this mark.

@ Xull: what type of potion is it?

Pooka nods at the Mayor's paranoia.

"You'll get no trouble from me sir. Luna, Heel."

I could probably take 'em. Of course then the society would never get rid of the 'murder hobo' rap...

Luna obediently snaps to Pooka's side, matching him stride for stride, and sitting obediently whenever he stops or pauses.

When he is presented to the prisoners, Pooka takes a moment to look them up and down, doing his best to remain expressionless.

"Well, lets start with the obvious. Tell me your side of the story. And don't leave out a detail if you hope to keep your necks the same length they are today." Pooka states curtly. He pulls a journal from one of Luna's saddlebags and waits, somewhat impatiently, for the three pathfinders to speak.

"Who are you?" pips up Corwin Burke.

Assuming that Pooka says something coy about Pathfinders, we continue

Corwin again speaks for the Pathfinders, "We really don't know a whole lot. Our Venture Captian sent us to search some Sarkorian ruins nearby. On our second night in town, we were arrested in our beds. We keep going over that night again, and we can't figure anything out. Mayhaps something to do with that letter Tobias got."

At the original question.

Pooka paces back and forth slowly, one armored hand held behind his back while the other hangs on to the journal. He stops and takes a deep breath, looking at the pathfinders up and down, memorizing their appearance, clothing, hair, size, and anything else that could be important later. Satisfied, he jots down a few notes.

"I represent the interests of the society in this matter, here to either verify or ascertain the truth of the events for which you are scheduled to be hanged."

He listens intently as the halfling doesn't really give him any interesting information, until he mentions the letter.

"How far are the ruins from here? Not very often a pathfinder gets to hole up in an Inn while he conducts his research. What happened the first day on your investigation of the ruins? And what letter are you talking about? May I see it?"

Turning to the Mayor, "May I also inspect their equipment? You may supervise me, to ensure that I am not playing any games. I assure you I am merely here for the truth."

Dakota adds in, "My dagger went missing. Guess they found it at the scene of the second murder. Don't know who took it." With this Tobias 'tsks' loudly, and Torum gives Tobias a dirty look, putting a reassuring hand on Dakota's shoulder.

"Then add to my list of questions, when did it go missing?"

"Have you seen anyone in the area paying particular attention to you, before all this trouble started?"

"Well, the kid they found on Otto's farm, that was the night we got here. And the second murder by Orug's store, that was the second night we were here. Ekira and Tobias arrested us that day, must have been earlier in the day. I didn't have any reason to draw it, so I don't know when it went missing." responded Dakota unhelpfully.

Corwin pipes in, "We never got to the ruins. We stayed here one night and the murders took place, Tobias told us not to leave as we were outsiders. You know what happened the second night, and here we are."

Tobias turns towards Pooka, "Sir, although I am allowing you to questions these prisoners, do you really believe I will give you leave to comb through all the evidence. They have nothing on them, and I don't want you slipping them something to break out. By what leave to you request this letter. Are you prepared to act as their official defense?"

"As I mentioned, "says Pooka, not allowing any frustration into his voice, keeping his patience like a practiced, cool veteran, "I am merely here to seek the truth. If I must declare my intention to be their defense in order to see the evidence, then I will."

"Orug says you were near his store, and he witnessed the aftermath of you once the second murder was committed, and then you knocked him out cold. Please tell me about that."

Pooka continues to make notes, hopeful he has made enough of an impression to convince the mayor to let him see the letter.

"Also Mayor, if you don't mind me asking, what authority has this inquisitor been given to arrest people and put them through your justice system? How long has she been here? I mean no disrespect, I just want to get a sense of the situation at hand."

If John will allow it, you can have my goblin T-shirt reroll (the GOP says that I'm allowed to make one reroll - but it doesn't 100% say that it has to be made for my PC). Stretching the rules, I know, but I love helping out my fellow players.

Pooka diplomacy reroll?: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (16) + 8 = 24

-- Oh baby! That's the good stuff. Just let me know if you want me to make all your rolls, okay? This forum's random number generator and I have an understanding.

Wording, p27:
... a player wearing any of the shirts listed below during a Pathfinder Society event may reroll one d20 roll during the course of that scenario. This reroll must happen before the original result is determined and the player must use the reroll result, even if it is lower.

"Sir, this conversation is at an end." His no nonsense tone books warns Pooka from pressing too hard.

As they leave the prisoners the rooms, Tobias turns to Pooka, "I have serious doubts whether or not allowing you to speak to them was a good idea. As for Ekira, she is a holy warrior of Iomedae, veteran of the Third Crusade. And you are? A disguised murder hobo poking his nose into business that is not your own. Unless you produce some compelling evidence, your society friends will hang for their crimes in MY TOWN. Forgive my outburst. Good day to you, sir." Tobias is shaking his head, struggling to keep his emotions in check.

Tobias does a double take at Pooka, "I cannot believe I am doing this, but Pooka I really believe you are doing this with the best of intentions, not just to further your society. Come, let us leave these prisoners to their rest."

Tobias leads Pooka from the prisoners, sitting at his breakfast table, he motions Pooka to sit. He waves his guards outside to resume his patrols.

"Ok, Pooka, here it is. It doesn't look good for them. The murders started when they rolled into town, and ended when we put them in prison. You heard Dakota, we found her dagger at the murder scene. We also have evidence that puts the Pathfinders at Otto's farm the day of the first murder. No matter your feelings on Ekira, that is pretty solid evidence." He grabs a muffin and begins to eat, "An fere is that ettter" He slides the letter over to Pooka, crumbs spraying from his mouth.

Ok, give me a Perception or Linguistics Pooka
