This is a play-by-post forum for people who have already signed up for this campaign.

Please introduce yourselves with the following:
1) What you look like
2) What your faction is (if you are making it publicly known - if you have one in private, PM it to me) - either parliamentarian or royalist.
3) What your class is (if obvious, if private PM to me)
4) And say hi to the group you're going to be travelling with. You are all part of a licensed adventuring band called The Blades of Cormyr, which is only open to Cormyrian noblemen and women.

If you can set up a small sidebar up top, like this one I randomly stole from another thread, it'll help me make rolls for you to make everything move smoothly:
Male Human (Garundi) Bard 2 | hp 17/17 | AC 15 | T 13 | FF 12 | CMD 15 | Fort +1 | Ref +7 | Will +1 | Init +5 | Perc +6 (+7 to locate traps) | Sense Motive +7 | Knowledge (All) +3 | Knowledge (Local) +5

Tallish (6'), Dark hair, blue eyes, plain face, no major distinguishing characteristics, aside from the eyes being an incredibly pale shade of blue.

Neutral, I seek to further Cormyn's interests as a nation irrespective of which faction profits more. Of course, if I have the chance to acquire power, I will take it.

Oracle. What precisely I do is not something I'd like the rest of the party to necessarily know, suffice it to say that I'm an oracle.

Havelock Vetinari. It will be an honor for you to adventure with me. I can only hope that I find a thrilling circumstance of my own, to put us on equal emotional footing. Do not let me detain you.

Do you need me to list all of my skills or just the trained ones? And what about attack rolls?

A male Human with an athletic 6'1 build, slightly unkempt dirty blonde hair, and ocean blue eyes that seem to shift with his confident and restless spirit. His only distinguishing physical feature is a blade scar over his left eye but covers it up usually with make-up.

Parliamentarian. Believes every man has the right to live in a society he has a direct say in. He has a hard time reconciling the fact that not everyone is as privileged and educated as he which leads him to idealistic assumptions about the nature of people.

Ninja. He loves to solve things with his force of personality but if that fails or isn't an option, he will take his time and strike where his enemies least expect is. A man who is as comfortable hidden in the crowd as he is in the spotlight.

"Hello, I am Hugh Tiberius Gatsby. I'm sure we'll be acquainted and loathing each other in no time. I look forward to serving with you all to for the security of our nation and its people. It's a pleasure"

Havelock Vetinari? If I remember my Diskworld correctly, this will be interesting =P

Neutral at the moment. He recently came into his position as the head of his household and has spent most of his life as a sort of social cosmopolitan. Real politics were of no interest until now.

Fighter. His life was spent around social circles and swordplay. He is regarded as one of the finest young fencers in the area, although untested in actual combat.

This is Steganographer! You can create a sidebar up top by editing your profile. It automatically generates a sidebar by putting your "Gender", then "Race", then "Class" - you can put extra data in those fields, and it will make the sidebar the same way.

Shaka, I think you can create a discussion thread attached to this main thread, just for OOC.

Viscountess Genta Cynama is a remarkably beautiful young woman with red hair and striking hazel eyes. She has a lean face, fine eyebrows, and a small nose. She's clearly a lightweight, but she's quick on her feet. Lady Genta dresses appropriately to her noble station, usually in bright summer blues and yellows. Currently, she prefers to wear few accessories, except an understated pair earrings. She carries a light mace when adventuring, but it looks never-used. At her waist are a pouch that looks like it holds spell components, and a few scrolls.

Lady Genta is never seen without her fox, Renyrd. Renyrd is a silver fox, and small enough for Genta to basically wear him around her shoulders, though just as often he's padding along at her feet. He is clearly more intelligent than your average fox, and often stares at people he finds interesting, if he thinks they won't notice.

Genta has Parliamentarian leanings, but she's not a strong supporter of either side yet, and is still making up her mind.

She does not at all like the term "witch" to describe herself, but that's what class she is.

"Good day. I'm Genta Cynama. Looks like we've got a good group here. I'm not so great at all this fighting stuff, but never mind me. I'm sure I'll find some little ways to help out!"

Hugh pulls out a vial at the mention of poison.

"I do. I wouldn't recommend messing with it though. It's hazardous to your health." he puts it back in his pouch. "That one is able to knock a full man unconscious but only from blood contact so you shouldn't have to worry about that, well, at least from my blades." He looks at the group. "At least we got this subject out of the way early."

"I was unaware that this was a subject that needed broaching," Edmond smiles affably, "Although it's good to know your blade won't be behind my back."

Edmond looks around, taking a scan of their surrounds. Taking a 10 if a roll's necessary.

"It isn't paranoia if they really are out to get you."

Havelock then recollects if any other members are joining the group, and if so, who. In addition, he makes a knowledge nobility check in his comrades, taking 10.

Scarab Sages

You pull forth your map of Cormyr and consult it. It is over 100 years ago, but the roads are still mostly in the right place, and Parliament hasn't funded out a surveying expedition in a while. So it'll do... even though it still has your destination marked as a smoking ruin.

You arrive at the gates of Tilverton on a wet and drizzly afternoon, the sun and clouds taking turns to dazzle and soak you on your long journey north from Suzail. Situated in a crater lined with high walls, the small town is sheltered from the high winds that blown in from the Stormhorns to the west.

There is a long line of farmers queuing up to enter the city when you arrive, but the the City Guards immediately snap to attention when they see a group of nobility ride up and motion you ahead of the line. "My lords! The best accommodations are in town at The Weeping Witch! With your permission, we will send a man ahead to prepare rooms for you, and inform Count Illance that the delegation from Suzail has arrived."

Note: I will presume you guys do reasonable things like this in the interests of making this story not take forever. If you ever want to object and, say, stop the messenger they send, we'll rewind time.

You get settled in at The Weeping Witch and review what you know:
Your group, The Blades of Cormyr, an official adventuring company licensed by both Crown and Parliament, has been sent to Tilverton, a town of long history but little importance. It is most notable for its annual fireworks festival (which takes place tomorrow) and the presence of the Illance Estate on the edges of the cliff, where the Illance family develops new research for use by the Cormyrian War Wizards. The Estate has been quiet for years, but disaster has recently struck, and you have been sent to both investigate and recover anything useful to the national interests of Cormyr.

You're in a town of about a thousand people, most of whom are blue, orange or purple for the annual fireworks festival. Not *wearing* these bright colors, but actually painted from head to toe in the most garish shades imaginable.

A messenger comes in saying that Count Illance (the local lord in charge of this town) will meet with you all tomorrow over tea for breakfast.

What will you do in the meantime?

I take 10 on knowledge nobility to learn as much as I can about both my comrades and Count Illance. I also take 10 on knowledge arcana to learn any details of what has come out of the Illance Estate as far as magic goes. (both are 16)

I speak to the proprietor, "Why exactly are people painted in this town?"

Scarab Sages

>I take 10 on knowledge nobility to learn as much as I can about both my comrades

They can share any further details if they like, especially what house they come from and their rank.

>Count Illance

Lord Illance, the 8th Count Illance, is from a family that used to be of the highest peers of the realm, before falling on hard times in the 1300s and losing their ancestral lands. He's a human (?) in his 60s, but still in good fighting shape. He leads the local Purple Dragon Knight contingent (of about 800) and is generally well respected in town for his honesty and integrity. He's reputed to be a loyal supporter of the monarchy, though many question why, given the crown's demotion of the family's status several centuries ago.

His great-grandfather, Old Man Illance, the 5th Count Illance, founded and still runs the estate where you have been sent to investigate.

>I also take 10 on knowledge arcana to learn any details of what has come out of the Illance Estate as far as magic goes. (both are 16)

They predominantly do three things: research new magic spells, craft magic items (mostly wands) for the war wizards, and occasionally build golems. They are most famous for developing the bladeward spell for the War Wizards. Details beyond this you're not sure.

>I speak to the proprietor, "Why exactly are people painted in this town?"

"It's the annual fireworks festival, my lord! Illance Day! Once a year, Old Man Illance lets us townsfolk know he's still alive and in good spirits by sending up giant plumes of blue, orange, and purple smoke from the top of his estate. He even changes the town waters to those colors! So the townies, we all get into the spirit of things and turned the thing into a big celebration of our Illance lords and protectors!"

One important note to everyone

Look through the list of Cormyrian noble houses here.

And pick one for your character. If you like your last name, you can be a member of a cadet branch of that family.

Crownsilver, Vetinari is his middle name, but he goes by it. Also, he's a count

"Interesting. Are there any subjects that one talking to the Count might not wish to bring up that you know of?"

Scarab Sages

>I drink and make merry! (or try to) before calling it a night.

The town nominally holds about 10,000 souls, but it seems that during festival week, there's about twice that many people here.

You get the feeling that the city guard had to boot some people out of their rooms at your inn in order to get you each your own room.

You pass by hundreds of people painted in bright, garish colours. Free booze is available on all sides, and people seem generally healthy and happy.

Assuming you press around a little bit using your Diplomacy score, you find out that the only source of disappointment this year is that instead of the stream turning blue or orange this year, it is a murky brown colour, and it tastes absolutely horrendous. So the town is running on well and cistern water for now.

He's a loyal kingsman, my lord. Any talk of Parliamentarians around him would be inadvisable, word to the wise. He's also rumored to be a bit sensitive about the fact that his great-grandfather generally ignores him and doesn't let him into the Illance Estate on the edge of town.

My name is Dimwit and I hail from below ground. Up here, it's a little strange. I'm from a middle-class family, my father is a merchant, and my mother, Torag rest her soul, was an entertainer. I have a younger brother and an older sister, she is number 4 prostitute in all of the under mountain.

Growing up, I fell in with a bad crowd. As a result, I got into trouble for a major theft.

I'm a fighter, not a lover; having only had several inconsequential relationships.

My fellow adventurers are my best friends; but I crave social acceptance.

Emotionally, I vacillate between hatred and malice for my foes and regret and the need to make penance afterwards.

To atnorman
Edmond is a count, and recently came old enough to take the reins in his household. Everything in the original post about him is common knowledge.

Edmond joins Hugh in general debauchery.

Hugh is from House Battlestar. A low baronet, his biggest concerns are trying to improve his lot so he can easier help those he cares for but the majority of his efforts have been to improve himself and not his political prestige. A few rumors circulated about his name. He's able to exploit his foes flaws and can blend in to whatever situation he's in, making him hard to pin down in both motivation and personality. Perhaps you shall be the one to find out.

It's fine, if you want to be their manservant.

Alternatively, there's Dwarven noble houses in Cormyr that you can be a minor member of. If you look through the link you can find some of them.

You can set this up in your profile, Taqwa, and update it if you ever take damage (hp 10/16) or level.

Quote:

You see notably less free booze being pressed upon yourself, but you manage to score some nonetheless. Examining the stream running through the town, with your +3 on Dungeoneering, it looks like maybe a case of well water running dry and mud getting into the water supply. But you're not really sure.

It sure doesn't smell like mud. You can see why nobody is drinking it.

Examining it, you likewise think it looks like what happens when a well runs dry, but that doesn't make a lot of sense if it comes from a spring, like everyone believes. Looking more closely, you believe the brown stuff is actually organic in nature, not mineral. It looks like decomposed remains washing downstream.

The smell is pretty horrendous, but you can't identify what sort of animal or creature it might have come from.

Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 231d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19

Walking through town, you notice large groups of the brightly colored townsfolk sleeping in the alleyways, gathered in large heaps of human flesh, packed in very tightly. They're not dead, but it does look very uncomfortable.

Noticing your gaze, one of the knights says, "A lot of the poorer folk in town rent out their homes to visitors during festival week, and sleep on the streets. They pile up in the alleys for warmth. Lord Illance calls them the Tilverton Paintings or something like that, on account of all the colors that run together. Much more scenic than the homeless you guys have in Arabel or Suzail, yes? But don't worry about them - they're safe enough, and when the festival is over they'll go back to their homes, much richer for their troubles."

You make it to the edge of the crater that the town is built within, and ascend up several sets of stone stairs to a small citadel perched on the edge. The city walls run around the crater, and connect up with the citadel on both sides. Behind the citadel, surrounded by an extra loop of the city's wall, you see the tops of a large nobleman's estate peeking over the twenty foot high walls. You can see a large central tower on one side of the brown stream (which runs down a waterfall to the town below here) and the top of a two-story building on the other side of the stream.

The knights announce you at the gates of the citadel, and the doors are opened wide, with all the grace and decorum you've come to expect from the Purple Dragon Knights, the finest soldiers in Cormyr. You are taken into a very well appointed library, where Count Illance stands, and greets you all with a bow appropriate to your station. He is an older man, but still in good shape. He wears long black gloves and has a tightly clipped white goatee.

"Ah, The Blades of Cormyr. Welcome to Tilverton. Send my thanks to your superiors for responding to my summons so quickly. Allow me to tell you what I know about what is going on."

He begins pacing back and forth in front of you, occasionally stopping to stroke a book with one finger.

"My great-grandfather and I have never been close. He turned over the daily operations of the family and our estates to my grandfather many years ago, and now that I run the family, his contact over the last thirty years has been only occasional and very curt. His interests are entirely wrapped up in the arcane, the more obscure, the better. As I have no particular interest in magic," he says, patting the longsword at his hip, "Our relationship can be described as... businesslike, at best. He will occasionally request things like 10 tons of powered crystal, which we provide to him, and in exchange, House Illance profits greatly from the sales of his magic items, allowing us to maintain a contingent of 800 knights, plus support staff and officers, without needing financial support from Parliament. Whom, as I am sure you are no doubt aware, would rather let the frontiers of our kingdom fall into the hands of bandits rather than open up their purse to protect it."

He glances casually at each of you, assessing your response to his attack on the Parliamentarians.

Completely neutral towards his statement, Havelock smiles slightly.

Clearly has no outward interest in the dig either. He waits patiently for the actual issue to come about.

Hugh Sighs. It's an attack on Parliament so I'm slightly perturbed. But I'm also annoyed that it's also more often true that they're fickle with their coin.

Genta is skeptical about the gibe, but references to "your superiors" and "no particular interest in magic" have already lowered her opinion of this man, though she does her best not to show it. She's mostly still waiting to hear why she's here.

Genta, what rank are you? I made a knowledge nobility check on you, but you apparently didn't notice"
