Black Tom |
That's right.
The enraged bull barrels into Torch, biting for a ferocious 26 points of damage. The lizardfolk join the attack by hurling javelins at the rest of you but fortunately they all go wide.
You are all up.
I don't think a map is needed. If you want to flank the hippo, you can flank. The lizardfolk are about 20 feet away, standing in water to the waist.
Aerys D Mavato |
Aerys moves to flank the hippo with Torch, "Fight with me Torch" she shouts before she barks out, "Gelik, do something to keep them green warriors out of our way..." as she slams her sword towards the hippo.
Longsword power attack 1d20 + 9 - 2 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 9 - 2 + 2 = 25 flanking
Longsword power damage 1d8 + 3 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 3 + 4 = 11
Sam "Torch" McQuarry |
Torch staggers under the hippo's assault. He feels ribs fracture within, and spits out blood. He throws a mute glance at Ralf, hoping for aid, but then he returns all his focus to the fight.
Full attack, since Aerys moved into flank for me. Swift action to declare the hippo the target of my ranger's focus.
Scimitar attack with all the bonuses: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (18) + 10 = 28, damage 1d6 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12 plus 2d6 ⇒ (6, 2) = 8 sneak; crit confirm 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (17) + 10 = 27, crit damage 1d6 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10.
Cestus attack with all the bonuses: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (5) + 10 = 15, damage 1d4 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7 plus 2d6 ⇒ (1, 1) = 2 sneak.
Maestro Gelikugel Aberwhinge |
Frustrated that the lizard-guys are just a bit too far away, Gelik takes a few steps forward, and casts a spell.
5' step or any necessary move to within 15' range, then Color Spray: (DC 15 [16 for jungle creatures], School - illusion (pattern) [mind-affecting]; Range 15 ft. cone-shaped burst, Saving Throw Will negates; Spell Resistance yes
2 HD or less: The creature is unconscious, blinded, and stunned for 2d4 rounds, then blinded and stunned for 1d4 rounds, and then stunned for 1 round. (Only living creatures are knocked unconscious.)
3 or 4 HD: The creature is blinded and stunned for 1d4 rounds, then stunned for 1 round.
5 or more HD: The creature is stunned for 1 round.
Black Tom |
Impressive!
Gelik rushes into the water and hits the lizardfolk with a faceful of swirling colors, knocking them all out. They sink under the water, unconscious.
The hippo just charged so all your attacks find their target. Bleeding profusely, the hippo finds itself trapped between Torch and Aerys and swings around and bites Aerys for 24 points of damage.
Now you are all up.
Sam "Torch" McQuarry |
My damage was a total of two points too high last time (1 point regular, 1 point crit) because I was using the two-handed version of my scimitar damage. My mistake.
Torch continues to pummel the hippo, hoping that Ralf can help Aerys the way he helped him.
Scimitar attack with flank and ranger's focus: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (16) + 10 = 26, damage 1d6 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11 plus 2d6 ⇒ (5, 1) = 6 sneak.
Cestus attack with flank and ranger's focus: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (14) + 10 = 24, damage 1d4 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8 plus 2d6 ⇒ (4, 1) = 5 sneak.
Black Tom |
Torch opens an artery and the hippo bull collapses. All falls silent, only interrupted by the lowing of the other hippos.
You get 700 xp each for the battle.
You can kill the lizardfolk if you are feeling vindictive, but they usually carry little loot. Your best course of action is probably to press on before the rest of the herd smells blood.
After that your journey is largely uneventful for several days. At this point you enter the Screaming Jungle, which is self-explanatory as you hear the incessant cacophony of monkeys above. You quickly get used to the daily downpour of rain that occurs soon after midday and lasts a couple of hours, followed by a half-hour of so of dense fog. On the second day you run into a pair of deinonychuses, but they only hiss and retreat, seeing you outnumber them. A few days later a flock of monkeys pass screeching over your head.
But it is on the fifth day that something interesting happens. The trees grow broader and taller here, their gnarled branches rising to a tangled canopy that blots out the sun. Digging into their roots, giant, parasitic corpse-flowers blossom across the forest floor. Littering the banks of the river are several humanoid corpses, their armor and bodies ripped apart as if by large claws. Suddenly, a series of loud slams and crashing noises echo through the jungle, sending small monkeys in the treetops screaming in all directions.
Roll for initiative.
Black Tom |
A bestial dire ape comes crashing out of the jungle right by you.
It's initiative is 12, so Aerys goes first, as does Gelik if he can beat a 12. It's within 30 feet of you and I'll try to again forgo any map.
Aerys D Mavato |
Aerys stands her ground and with her weapons ready waits for the ape to attack. "Stay behind me, Torch you know what to do!"
Readies to step up and attack if the ape threatens to attack or injure any of the party.
If it attacks, move up and attack.
Longsword power attack 1d20 + 9 - 2 ⇒ (12) + 9 - 2 = 19
Longsword power damage 1d8 + 3 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 3 + 4 = 13
Black Tom |
Aerys steps up to confront the ape, but she's not quite prepared for when it starts casting a spell at you. Her reflexes kick in though, and she manages to cut it deeply just as it tries to finish its incantation. Incredibly the ape still manages to go ahead and Aerys is struck with a Fear spell (Will DC 19). Fortunately she managed to distract it so as to shield the rest of you from its foul magic.
Then you are all up.
Maestro Gelikugel Aberwhinge |
Hmm. Magical monkey.
Gelik casts a spell, hoping that the magic monkey isn't somehow resistant to being immolated. big damage 3d6 ⇒ (5, 2, 1) = 8
Spontaneous Immolation (100 ft. + 10 ft./level, one creature, Fortitude half and Reflex)
You point your finger at a creature, causing it to spontaneously burst into flame. The target takes 3d6 points of fire damage and catches on fire. A successful Fortitude save reduces this damage by half and prevents the target from catching on fire. Each round on your turn, a burning target can attempt a new save to extinguish the flames (DC equal to the DC of the spell); otherwise it takes another 1d6 fire damage.
Sam "Torch" McQuarry |
If Aerys fails and runs, Torch will move up to take her place - otherwise he will circle to try to get into a flank.
"Face me, slave of Angazhan!" Torch cries, hurling himself forward.
Leaning a bit on my Mwangi Scholar and Scholar of the Great Beyond traits there, but I think it's the assumption Torch would make. No idea if he's right.
Swift action to declare the ape my hunter's focus, then move and two-handed attack with the scimitar. Scimitar attack 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (3) + 10 = 13, damage 1d6 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9. If I can flank with Aerys, add +2 to the attack and 2d6 ⇒ (5, 3) = 8 to the damage.
Aerys D Mavato |
Will 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (19) + 0 = 19 ... my immediate words were 'bl00dy hell' in surprise!!
Aerys gather up the deepest strength of mind, just fighting off her inclination to flee, then realizes her will is greater than the ape's magic.
Black Tom |
Gelik: the ape has spell resistance, so go ahead and roll if you please. Aerys has another action. The ape made its save against the Glitterdust. Torch doesn't get to flank this round (unless Aerys is ready to take an AoO to circle the ape (or tumble into place), but will presumably do so in the next one.
Sam "Torch" McQuarry |
Adjusting his position to take advantage of the ape's focus on Aerys, Torch slashes again with his sword and also pummels it with his cestus.
Should be able to five-foot into flank now, yes? With that assumption in mind...
Scimitar attack 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (9) + 10 = 19, damage 1d6 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7 plus 2d6 ⇒ (6, 5) = 11 sneak attack.
Cestus attack 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (1) + 10 = 11, damage 1d4 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6 plus 2d6 ⇒ (4, 5) = 9 sneak attack.
Maestro Gelikugel Abermonkey |
Don't hit me, I'm a fellow monkey!
Gelik casts again, his face scrunched up in effort.
beat that SR 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10
boom 3d6 ⇒ (3, 4, 6) = 13
Spontaneous Immolation (100 ft. + 10 ft./level, one creature, Fortitude half and Reflex)

A successful Fortitude save reduces this damage by half and prevents the target from catching on fire. Each round on your turn, a burning target can attempt a new save to extinguish the flames (DC equal to the DC of the spell); otherwise it takes another 1d6 fire damage.
Aerys D Mavato |
Aerys grits her teeth and strikes out at the ape, whilst trying to avoid the strong arms of the beast counter-striking.
By now Torch should be flanking, if not she takes a 5ft step to flank with Torch.
Longsword power attack 1d20 + 9 - 2 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 9 - 2 + 2 = 27 flanking
Longsword power damage 1d8 + 3 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 3 + 4 = 15
Black Tom |
You will indeed be flanking this round. But then something weird happens. As Torch's blow lays the ape low, something rises out of its prone shape, a medium-sized bat-winged figure, dark and insubstantial were it not for the glint off its sharp teeth and claws.
The monster immediately starts casting some sort of spell (defensively) and a demonic crocodile appears behind Torch and bites him for 11 points of damage.
Gelik, Ralf and Aerys: you can redirect or reconsider your actions according to the new situation. You are all up. And yes, you are still flanking.
Ralf Pennywhistle |
planes: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7
spellcraft: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (19) + 9 = 28
"That crocodile -- tain't all real, it's made out of shadowy stuff and it's only partly there. Don't you believe it!"
Ralf will try glitterdust on the gloomy bat-winged shape.
Maestro Gelikugel Aberwhinge |
spellcraft 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9
Gelik takes an involuntary step back, speechless for once. His face twists in concentration; he's going to immolate this monster if it's the last thing he does. (And it may well be.)
Assuming the bat thing has SR 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25
some damage, maybe? 3d6 ⇒ (1, 4, 6) = 11
Black Tom |
Aerys's sword passes harmlessly through the creature's insubstantial form. Gelik's spell does some more damage, but fails to set it on fire. Ralf covers it in glitter, giving it an eerie sparkle, but it can still see just fine.
Torch is up, then the monster.
Sam "Torch" McQuarry |
Torch launches a full attack at the demonic crocodile, knowing that he has real wounds despite what Ralf claims.
Scimitar: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22, damage 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
Cestus: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10, damage 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
Will save (with the pointed-out-illusion bonus) 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26
Black Tom |
With Ralf's help Torch realizes the nature of the crocodile and manages to hit its weak spot, making it dissolve.
The monster hisses and goes after Torch tooth and claw. Its teeth connect and he feels a chilling sensation running through his bones. 7 points of damage and 3 cold.
Then you are all up again.
Maestro Gelikugel Aberwhinge |
Kick it in the balls!
Sorry, I got nothin'. Is it a magic sword? Unfortunately, I have no way to enchant it if it isn't. I really need to get some buffing spells.
Gelik pulls a card from his sleeve and tosses it on the ground. card from a variant Deck of Illusions (peryton) He points at the bat-winged thing. Get 'im, boy. Kill!
Gelik's desire is that the illusion of the peryton flaps around the creature's head, menacingly. It will swoop in like it's attacking, though it will intentionally miss. It shrieks a bit, too - maybe it will draw a few attacks from the creature.
Deck of Illusions - This set of parchment cards is usually found in an ivory, leather, or wooden box. a full deck consists of 34 cards. When a card is drawn at random and thrown to the ground, a major image of a creature is formed. The figment lasts until dispelled. The illusory creature cannot move more than 30 feet away from where the card landed, but otherwise moves and acts as if it were real. At all times it obeys the desires of the character who drew the card. When the illusion is dispelled, the card becomes blank and cannot be used again. If the card is picked up, the illusion is automatically and instantly dispelled.
Aerys D Mavato |
I know a magic sword will help, but Aerys doesn't until Torch's magic sword actually does does damage....so sh'll be coming out of delay soon ... I assume his attack will hit so ....
Seeing Torch's magic sword scythe into the unnatural apparition, Aerys drops he sword and takes out her dagger, which has a light blue glow. She stabs at the floating enemy, hoping to take some of the things life force from. "Now you will be banished to a true death."
Dagger +1 power attack 1d20 + 9 - 2 ⇒ (18) + 9 - 2 = 25
Dagger +1 power damage 1d4 + 4 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 + 4 = 10
Black Tom |
Torch and Aerys manage to connect with the insubstantial shape. They do little damage, but enough to annoy the demon and cause it to try to shroud itself in darkness. At that exact moment, though, the illusory peryton makes a dive for it and disrupts its concentration, and the magic darkness fades again.
You are up again.
Maestro Gelikugel Aberwhinge |
Yes, that's the way, my pet! Again!
Gelik gestures to the illusory peryton, directing it to dive at the monster again.
What do you know, it actually worked.
He then casts once more, still trying to immolate the damn thing.
penetrate 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17

Aerys D Mavato |
Aerys tries to cut it once more.
Dagger +1 power attack 1d20 + 9 - 2 ⇒ (19) + 9 - 2 = 26
Dagger +1 power damage 1d4 + 4 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 + 4 = 9
