Male Human (mostly) Mystic Theurge

Welcome to the Inn of the Slumbering Drake!

Nearly 200 hundred years ago, this location in Byrny was proudly occupied by an inn called The Famished Vagabond. The gnomish establishment was well-known throughout the region for its clean rooms, and savory meals. However, the wooden structure was razed during one of the legendary dragon Benthosruthsa’s random attacks, and burned to the ground. Yet the townsfolk were resolute – they attempted to rebuild on the site several times over the years.

Unfortunately, during each period of construction or shortly thereafter, some sort of accident would occur, usually a fatal one. This occurred seven times, accompanied by another razing by the dragon, and a roof collapse that killed four workers. Eventually, the town abandoned the site, believing it was cursed by the dragon. For over 100 years, the site lay fallow.

Then, about 20 years ago, a mysterious woman with long silver hair purchased the property. Two years later, she opened the Inn of the Slumbering Drake, a twostorey stone building with an attached stable. At first, locals shunned the place, fearing the proprietress, her lumbering door guard, and even her precocious dragon pet. However, travelers soon discovered inexpensive clean rooms, hearty meals, and rousing bardic entertainment.

Eventually, even the townsfolk began to enjoy homestyle meals in front of a roaring fire with a soft lute strumming in the background. The sight of the diminutive “slumbering drake” curled up on one of many strategically located pillows around the taproom was commonplace. Lady Chauntessa is now an accepted member of the community. It is widely known that she is a powerful sorceress, and quite wealthy. She has helped fund many community projects over the years, and even hosts a few annual costume balls open to the whole town, complete with complimentary food and ale. Her generosity has won the townsfolk over to the extent that they look the other way when strangers arrive at the inn during the wee hours of the night and are whisked inside the back entrance. She is also fond of adventurers, and often cuts them a price break on extended stays.

Lady Chauntessa stands at six feet tall with long, flowing silver-white hair. However, she appears to be in her early forties. When asked about her white hair, she explains it was caused by a run-in with undead years ago. She has high cheekbones and slender facial features. She rarely smiles, and if she had a single imperfection, it would be the frown seemingly etched onto her countenance. She always wears fine silk gowns and flowery perfumes. She is pessimistic, sullen, and speaks with a soft, melodious voice. Lady Chauntessa has a soft spot for adventurers, claiming to be one herself, years ago.

Feel free to make your introductions. I'll introduce some more of the patrons tomorrow.

Torric enters the inn, his 5'10" frame moving languidly, like a cat. He keeps his head down at first, doing his best to hide the hideous scarring on his face and hands. It's obvious he's been badly burned and cut, one scar snaking down from forehead to jawline, right over the eye. He's lucky to have sight in both eyes from the look of him.

He bears a scimitar, as well as a pair of throwing axes tucked into his belt, a dagger in each boot, and miscellaneous adventuring gear. He is soft spoken with the serving wench as he orders a plate of food and a mug of to wash it down.

He settles into a seat a short ways from the fire, and turns to watch the dancing flames while waiting for his meal. Whether he is actually listening to the conversations around him is a good guess as he sits quietly, staring into the fire.

Male Human Druid 1

Eider attentively enters The Slumbering Drake. He has a look of the wilds about him, and has splotches of earthen soil covering his limbs, and twigs sprouting from unkempt auburn hair. He has a stern and somewhat precarious look about himself as he enters the surroundings of this inn. A leaf here, and a pine needle there can be seen strewn about his leather garb.

A sickle rests at his side, and nature traveled gear upon his back and the opposing side. He stands with purpose, but in a way that isn't seen in the hustle and bustle of town streets.

Unaware of his current surroundings, he decides to take a look about the room.

Male Human (mostly) Mystic Theurge

The bouncer Cookie is an impressive, barrel-chested figure, standing seven and a half feet tall. He has a sloping forehead, greasy black hair, and a coarse, unshaven face. His arms ripple with muscles. He’d be a fearsome sight ... except that he lacks any teeth (the result of indulging on sweetcakes for years) and is a gentle giant. He speaks halting Common, but always courteously and with a smile. He never goes anywhere without his stuffed animal and a pouch of sugary treats.

Quintus the potion salesman is a tall, aging human with a flowing gray beard and unkempt graying hair. He prefers to wear a pointy cap, and stoops over his gnarled staff when ambling about. He looks every bit his age of 77 years (that's how old he claims to be at any rate.

Brianna is a red-headed attractive half-elf with green eyes and a freckled, tanned complexion. She wears a gaily colored pants-and-blouse combo, with high leather riding boots. Her teak lute with gold inlayed runes is also in her hands while at the inn. She often spends her nights entertaining the crowd with song or poetry, enhanced with minor spells, and then quickly spends her money on food, drink, clothes, and trinkets.

Gnarkle is a tall for a halfling (3’6”) and slender, typically wearing plain clothes. He has wavy brown hair and large blue eyes with pale skin. He talks quickly and often slurs his words. A tailor by trade, he happily spends many nights at the inn, tossing darts to earn money to satisfy his thirst. However, he always plays first and drinks later, not wanting to impair his aim. His fingers are always playing with a “lucky” coin. He is also quite available, and considers himself quite the ladies’ man.

A rotund dwarven merchant with a boisterous laugh, Kram Bandyhock, is always ready to down a pint or two with a new friend to swap some stories, but his canny eyes never cease to look for a profitable deal. He trades in most kinds of interesting equipment that adventurers tend to bring home.

Each town has a local drunk, and Cillamar is no different. Arien is a nondescript human with a rugged appearance. The hair on his previously shaved head is growing back, and his face is unshaven and dirty. He bears a small scar over his left eye. He speaks in a low tone, and is always looking over his shoulder. Arien spends all his nights in the taproom, spending whatever copper he has earned during the day through begging or performing odd jobs. He babbles on to anyone who will listen to his sad story, which most of the townsfolk think is a drunken delusion or a pile of lies.

Just waiting for everyone to find their way here, and then we can get started in earnest.

Female Half-Elf Summoner/1

Sitting over in the corner of the inn, is a blonde haired woman and her male travel companion. They have a map out in front of them discussing different locations. "Since we're here we may as well look for him." She states while draining the end of her wine goblet. "Seriously how hard can one man be to find. This searching for him has become exhausting and I really do hope we find a lead soon."

At this her companion gets up to get more wine.

Male Human Druid 1

Aha! One more here!

Female Half-Elf Summoner/1

Aye :) Glad to get the opportunity to play my summoner. Her "companion" is her Eidolon.

Finally here! Sorry to have been holding things up.

A tall, handsome man strides confidently through the doorway of the Slumbering Drake. Dressed in well-oiled leather armor, the man bears a travel pack slung over his shoulders and carries a polearm bearing a wickedly sharp curved blade. The man's piercing golden eyes gaze about the inn's common room, taking note of all of the occupants with a glance.

The man nods courteously to the bouncer and makes his way over to the bar. He listens appreciatively to the red-haired half-elf bard's song for several moments before turning his attention to the barkeep. "Excuse me. I have traveled far, and was hoping I could get a meal and a room...?" he asks.

Female Half-Elf Summoner/1

While her companion goes to get more wine, Melima packs up the map and other oddities that are on the table. She notices the half-elf with the dangerous looking polearm speaking to the barkeeper. While observing him she notices how tall he is for being a half-elf. Melima walks over to the bar and approaches the handsome half-elf "Excuse me, sir. I'm Melima and this is Hector." Melima says introducing herself and her companion. "I was wondering if you'd like to join us at our table once you find a room.

Male Human (mostly) Mystic Theurge

Lady Chauntessa pauses for a moment as he gives Tyros an appraising stare. "A bed in the common room will cost you four silvers, sir. You can have a double room for 1 gold or a suite for 3, if you feel you like to splurge. As for meals, we have venison for four silvers, stew for 2 or again, if you want the best, poached trout with vegetables for 6 silvers. That goes for you, too, lass" she adds with a nod to Melima.

Welcome all, glad to have the party assembled.

"Tyros Aurelius, at your service, Lady Melima. Master Hector," Tyros bows his head respectfully to the two half-elves. "Thank you for your hospitality. I would be honored to join you."

"A bed in the common room will be sufficient, my good lady," Tyros replies to the woman behind the bar. "Lady Melima and Master Hector, may I treat you both to a dinner of poached trout with vegetables?" Tyros asks his two new acquaintances. Then he pauses and glances back to the silver-haired woman behind the bar, his eyes narrowing for a moment and before widening in realization. "Forgive me, good lady, but are you Lady Chauntessa, the proprietor of this fine establishment?"

Female Half-Elf Summoner/1

"I thank you kindly Sir Tyros, we would be honored to have dinner with you." Melima answers. She is taken back by how handsome Tyros happens to be. This may be from the fact that Melma grew up in the slums of Katheer and most of the young men from there look well beyond their years due to the hard life they lived.

Male Human Druid 1

After observing the common room for a few moments, Eider proceeds to the counter. He notices the talk of rooms for the evening, and in a tone that sticks to the point says "A common room and a bath, please?" as he slides a gold toward the barkeep. It seems as though he may have been mildly oblivious to inserting himself in the conversation. As well, it seems as though the only reason he is asking for a bath is to try and be a little less conspicuous.

TOrric turns from the fire to watch the newcomers as they arrive, his back to the fire now. His lips curl into a bitter half-smile as he sees the lady invite the handsome man to her table and their further exchanges. Eider draws his attention as he asks for a meal and a bath... Ah, a bath sounds like a good idea, perhaps I'll have one myself. The road has been dusty and I am weary of travel. He sets his drink down on the table and rises, keeping his head down to minimize the look of the scars on his once-handsome face.

He walks up to the bar and quietly asks, "I'd like a bath please, and a private room."

Sorry for not posting - the gameplay thread wasn't updating for me so I thought there were no posts at all.

Zababa, sitting near the fireplace, looks up from his book to see several new people had arrived at the Inn. Taking a drink from his glass of ale, he wonders if today would be The Day I Met My Companions... the two new-comers certainly seemed 'rough' enough, and the blonde woman's search for someone was intriguing, as was with golden eyes who'd just sat down with her.

Male Human (mostly) Mystic Theurge

The silver-haired woman looks pensively at Tyros. "Yes, I am Chauntessa." She frowns. "You seem to remind me of someone... nevermind." She shrugs and turns to the others she says: "A bath can be arranged for 1 silver, if you like. I hope our meagre comforts will be to your liking, but then I guess you adventurers are used to roughing it."

Welcome all. Glad to have you assembled. The dotting is kind of a mess right now, so we'll all have to keep an eye on the thread. Whenever you are ready, let's get the party started.

"Meager comforts? Roughing it? Does that mean you do not have private rooms? In which case, I'll take space in the common room for the night in addition to a hot bath. Thank you."

Torric sits back down again by the fire, awaiting the readiness of his hot bath... He looks over at Zababa and nods a brief hello, keeping his head mostly down, hiding as best he can, the hideous scars on his face and hands.

"Forgive me, my lady. I was instructed to seek you out," Tyros says to Lady Chauntessa in a lowered voice, the leather-gloved fingers of his left hand seeming to unconsciously pass over the stylized symbol of a golden dragon's claw stitched on the back a similar glove covering his right hand - gloves that strangely seem to be missing their fingertips, leaving the ends of Tyros' fingers bare. "I was told you could direct me to Castle Whiterock."

For Black Tom:
I still need to flesh out Tyros' background, but the short and sweet version is that he is an initiate of an order of sorcerer/paladins devoted to Apsu the Waybringer, the Exiled Wyrm, god of good dragons. The higher-ups in the order are concerned that the evil dragon Benthosruthsa may be on the verge of rising again, and have sent Tyros to investigate. Unfortunately, while Tyros is brave and strong and true, he doesn't have the best sense of direction. That's why his superiors told him to seek out Lady Chauntessa at the Slumbering Drake Inn. The stylized golden dragon's claw is the symbol of Apsu and of Tyros' order.

Male Human (mostly) Mystic Theurge

Unsmiling, Lady Chauntessa looks at Torric. "We do have private rooms. They are 1 gp each, or 3 if you'd prefer a suite."

To Tyros: "You won't have any trouble finding the castle. It's a day's ride eastwards and the road is pretty well-trodden."

At the man with golden eyes' mention of Castle Whiterock, Zababa's attention focused raptly on him.

"Castle Whiterock, you say? Why do you want to go there?"

Torric pauses, listening to the conversation on Castle Whiterock. The bath beckons but the talk is more interesting right now.

To Lady Chauntessa, he smiles and says, "The private room would be fine, thank you."

Female Half-Elf Summoner/1

As Melima is listening to the conversation, Hector nudges her and give her a look. His look says the castle might be worth checking out for a lead.

She shrugs her shoulders and replies "I wouldn't hurt to look."

Male Human Druid 1

To no one in particular, amidst the conversation, Eider speaks up "What is this Castle Whiterock?". A look of curiosity comes strongly to his face, as his brows draw inward. Continuing on he asks in an almost absentmindedly fashion "Would the regents or lords of this place know anything about missing people in the area?".

"A day's ride eastward, you say? My thanks, Lady Chauntessa," Tyros replies to the innkeeper, bowing his head.

Looking around, Tyros realizes that his question has attracted an audience. He glances about to see if anyone else is listening before answering the newcomers' questions. "It is said that Castle Whiterock is the home of the ancient and evil dragon Benthosruthsa, a foul wyrm who terrorized this land for centuries - according to the stories. But he hasn't been seen in over a century now. It's possible that he's dead, his hoard unguarded. But there are some who fear that he may be on the verge of rising again. That's why I've been sent here - to investigate."

Tyros turns to the outdoorsman. "I don't know of any lords or regents at Castle Whiterock, as I am a stranger to these lands. But if there are people missing in the area it's possible that they may have been abducted by servants of the dragon to serve as a form of tribute," the tall half-elf speculates.

"I was just about to to join Lady Melima and Master Hector for dinner," Tyros says to the outdoorsman, nodding to the other two half-elves. "Would you care to join us? If you are looking for missing people so close to the dragon's lair, it is likely that your path and mine lead to the same destination. Perhaps we may find others interested in aiding us."

"My name is Tyros, by the way. Tyros Aurelius," Tyros introduces himself, extending a hand to the outdoorsman.

"This is interesting... mind if I join you as well, I'd like to hear more about this Castle Whiterock and your quest there... if you don't mind." This coming from the scarred human standing not far away.

"Certainly, Master- ?" Tyros invites, motioning toward the table.

"I am called Torric." He nods in greeting. "A pleasure to meet you, Tyros, and all of you." Torric speaks in a very cultured voice, for one so ruggedly armed and dressed. "My apologies for eavesdropping, but I couldn't help but overhear your conversation and I must say I am intrigued." He sits at the table with the others, nodding in greeting to all at the table.

"Oh! And I, I would very much like to accompany you! Surely you have need of one able to pick locks and suchlike!" exclaimed the suddenly very excited halfling.

Male Human Druid 1

Remembering the footprints found at the scene where those he is searching for have gone missing, he becomes interested in this new information. With a tone that suggests intrigue, Eider replies to Tyros "I am Koei De'ro Da'Mok, and my calling name is Eider." After which he places his forefingers to his forehead, and then to the center of his chest as he proceeds to bow. "I will join you and your companions in dinner and conversation." he then states after standing upright again.

"A pleasure to meet you, Master Torric. Master Eider. And I'm afraid I didn't catch your name, Master Halfling, but you would be most welcome as well. Among my people it is considered good luck to have a halfling along when investigating a dragon's lair," Tyros says with a welcoming smile.

"I'm afraid I don't have much more to add to what I said previously," Tyros says in reply to Torric's request. "I've been sent to investigate Castle Whiterock to determine whether the wyrm Benthosruthsa is dead, or if he is preparing to rise and rampage across the countryside again. If he is alive and I can put an end to him, then I will. But I imagine I will need brave and true allies to help me do so. I know nothing about Castle Whiterock, but I was hoping that Lady Chauntessa or someone else here in Byrny could tell me more about it."

"Ah! It appears that Lady Chauntessa is about to bring us our meal. Enough about me and my quest. Please tell me about yourselves," Tyros invites his new acquaintances.

HP 16/16 | Init +3; Per +7, Traps +5 | AC 16, touch 14, flat-footed 13 | Fort +3, Ref +7, Will +1 (+2 vs Fear)

"Many apologies, Tyros Aurelius! I am Zababa, late bookbinder and now explorer. And, you, to, Master Torric - how do you do? Dinner time, fantastic! I must say, the trout is particularly exquisite this season," burbled the excitable halfling.

"A bookbinder turned explorer? That's quite a clever combination, Master Zababa," Tyros says appreciatively. "After your adventures you can write it all down, publish it, and turn a tidy profit!"

"But what of the rest of you? I gather from Master Eider's initial question that he is searching for one or more missing persons. But what of you, Lady Melima? What brings you and Master Hector here? And you, Master Torric?"

Male Human Druid 1

Before proceeding, Eider gives the same salutations to everyone in kind.
First with Torric, then Zababa and Milena, and finally to Hector. After which, he grabs the back of a chair, slides it out and takes a seat. Starting in, "It is true I search for people, a family in fact. A betrothed couple and their child were taken from their home. I was soon after to the abduction, and there were little clues... That is, except for sets of footprints... Footprints belonging to some sort of reptiles. Enough of me though, the rest of you? Are any of you in search as well?"

Female Half-Elf Summoner/1

Melima listens as everyone introduces themselves. "I am please to meet all of you. Hector and I are looking for an elf named Dengal and I believe this man is my father. So far I have had very few leads as to where he maybe located.

Hector and I became to be travel companions more than 18 years ago. Oh at that time I was the only one that could see him. No matter where life has taken me he's always been there for me. Not until I became an adult, was I physically able to see and touch him. After reading a beautiful leather bound book my mother had left for me was I able to touch and feel the warmth for the first time." As Melima finishes she looks around slightly nervous as if she has said too much.

"I'm not sure exactly what brought me to this place. What I seek can't be found here, I'm afraid. Still, I have much to learn and I think there is a lot to be learned here. First, I must follow where adventure leads, and so I am here... perhaps visiting this Castle Whiterock will serve to be a good learning experience for me."

Male Human (mostly) Mystic Theurge

Lady Chauntessa turns to Zababa as she brings the steaming plates of food. "You know, I couldn't help overhearing. I happen to share your interest in old books, and I would gladly pay you 25 gp for any old book you may recover from Castle Whiterock. Those ruins are full of interesting old lore. There is a lot of history to the place."

HP 16/16 | Init +3; Per +7, Traps +5 | AC 16, touch 14, flat-footed 13 | Fort +3, Ref +7, Will +1 (+2 vs Fear)

"I would be most absolutely delighted to share any such books with you should I find any!" replied Zababa. "I'm curious, though, Lady Chauntessa, if you've also heard anything about people going missing in the area? Surely it cannot be coincidence that several of those here have arrived in search of the missing."

Male Human (mostly) Mystic Theurge

"Well, you should ask Arien then. For a few coins, he'll tell anyone who would listen about the time when he was abducted by slavers. Presumably they found out how worthless he is." She snorts in derision. "Honestly it's no wonder. It's dangerous to live so close to such a place. The Lady alone knows what that place may be infested by. They say that the goblins are on the rise, but I don't know if such rumors are to be trusted. People also say that the ruins are haunted. I don't know what to believe. It's claimed its share of adventurers, that's for sure, but now it's been a while since anyone ventured there."

Kram the merchant interferes: "The brothers of some sort of monkish order have set up their camp on top of it. They say they are planning to re-establish their order." "The Order of the Dawning Sun?" Lady Chauntessa interjects. "Aye, that's the one. Been at it for the last year, I think."

The lady turns back to you. "[b]Well, there you go. I hope our cuisine is to your liking, and if there is anything more I can do for you, just let me know."

At this point her dragon familiar darts like lightning and with a wink snatches a morsel from Tyros's plate. Lady Chauntessa is livid and apologizes profusely, but the dragon happily chews on its treat, unfazed by its mistress's scolding.

As there seeems to be a commotion by your table, Quintus shuffles over. After introducing himself and absent-mindedly wiping his runny nose on his sleeve, he wonders if you'd be interested in buying some potions, and if not, if you maybe could keep an eye open for some interesting monsters. He would gladly pay for some specimens that could be useful for making diverse concoctions. Since he does not know what dwells down there, he can't give you a list, but he promises to pay a fair price if you should come upon something interesting.

Tyros listens attentively to Melima's description of her quest and of her otherworldly companion. "So... Master Hector is your guardian angel, in a sense?" Tyros asks.

Tyros thanks Lady Chauntessa when she brings the steaming plates of food. He hands the innkeeper four gold coins. "There, my lady. I believe that should cover the cost of the meals for my new acquaintances," he says, indicating Melima, Hector, Eider, Torric, and Zababa, "... As well as my bed in the common room tonight. Now, could you point out this Arien you mentioned? It sounds like it would be in our interests to learn more of these slavers."

Tyros chuckles loudly and good-naturedly at the antics of Lady Chauntessa's dragon familiar. "No need to fuss, my lady. There's plenty here to share," he says, cutting the serving of salmon in half. "Would you care for some more, my friend? Or would you prefer some vegetables?" he offers to the drake.

Amidst the commotion Eider asks the lady "Where is this, Arien, now? Any information he gas may be beneficial." Though secretly, he is just hoping Arien will say what he wants to hear. Also, noticing Chauntessa's small friend he says "That us a spirited companion you have."

Male Human (mostly) Mystic Theurge

"Spirited indeed" mutters Chauntessa as she whisks her friend away. "He's had quite enough."

You have no trouble finding Arien, sitting hunched over a beer and glancing over his shoulder. He starts when you approach him, but he's willing to tell his story, even if he doesn't sound quite convinced himself: A year ago, he sold his candlemaking shop and dedicated his life to the ways of a monk. He embarked on a pilgrimage to Castle Whiterock (to assist his brothers in uncovering secrets), but he was captured by the slavers and sold to the orcs. For weeks, he was beaten and threatened to be sent “down below.” He escaped (but refuses to tell how) and returned to Byrny. He tried to warn the populace of the slavers and orcs, but it fell on deaf ears.

He gives you a pleading look, hoping for you to buy him a drink.

Eider removes 2 gold from his pouch, and places then in the hand of Arien saying "Thank you for sharing your experience with us, have a drink my friend." The furrowed brow remaining on Eider's face, making him look somewhat off-put (though this may just be his natural visage, it seems). He returns to the table, and mulls over his thoughts quietly, vaguely listening to the conversation about.
