Beyond the rim... there dwells madness -- Moff Rimmer DMs the Planes
Game Master
Moff Rimmer
Something is happening that threatens the existence of the planes themselves. Our heroes have been chosen and thrown into things to set things right -- are they up for the challenge?
Whatever you were doing … you’re not doing that now.
Spoiler:
What you were doing just before this is really up to you. You weren’t involved in anything that absolutely needs your attention. i.e. You aren’t taking care of children by yourself, etc. But you might have been tending fields, dancing with a lovely lady/man, or something else entirely. Regardless of where you were or how you were dressed, you suddenly find yourself here fully equipped. You also find that you have all your spells/charges/whatever that you might have used previously that day.
Isn’t magic cool?
You suddenly find yourself in a room. The first things that you probably notice are the creatures looking at you menacingly. You see a couple of Yuan-Ti looking rather shocked to see you. The smaller one in back is seems to be yelling at the larger one.
Draconic Speakers – Vortik and Vassago:
She seems to be blaming the big guy for your appearance and for the disappearance of someone else. Eventually his confused look is replaced with anger and he says that perhaps one of you will work in his place. Followed quickly with a command to the other creatures to attack the newcomers.
A few other things you notice as you take in your surroundings. You are standing in the middle of a magical circle of power of some kind. It was glowing right when you arrived and is quickly fading away. (Marked on the map with the yellow circle.) It also looks like the big Yuan-Ti just dropped a big sword (and was looking at his hands and sword in pain and confusion). There are bookshelves along the North wall which are on fire. The South wall has a shelf with various objects/vials/potions/jars/etc. on it. Many have been smashed and the shelf unit is also on fire. There is a table in the room with a number of papers/scrolls/etc. on it and it too is on fire.
I need to tweak a couple things, but it won't change one iota as to what my first reaction will be.
Vassago quickly scans around the perimeter of the room to take note that there were five others aside from himself that appears to be contained in what seems to be a magic circle. However, he quickly gauged that the greater threat was beyond its barrier. With a gesture and an utterance, he casts a spell to which he was well intimated.
**Casts Mage Armor on self to increase AC by 4 and takes a 5' step (NW?) behind the female**.
**Casts Mage Armor on self to increase AC by 4 and takes a 5' step (NW?) behind the female**.
FYI:
Mage armor doesn't stack with your bracers (unless I'm mistaken). I'll let you switch if you so desire. Shield might work better for you in this case...
We got into a similar discussion yesterday evening at the gaming table. Does Bracers of Armor only work if you have armor to supplement it? I thought they were just bracers worn that simulates giving you a +X as in the form of a field. If it's the former, then I'm going to drop that completely for shield (especially since I'm not wearing any armor). I keep getting Shield and Bracers of Armor confused.
Can you tell I rarely play an arcane caster that has to fret with such trivialities? :)
Bracers of armor give you an armor bonus which is the same as what you get from mage armor. In both cases you are encased in a magical field that effectively simulates armor. Yeah, you are totally better off going with shield if you have bracers. Me on the other hand....
Elysia squeaks with surprise. It's not every day you get plopped straight out of the bath into the middle of an adventure. She quickly cast mage armor on herself as the scary looking man stepped behind her and reached into her pack to pull out a wand.
Vortic growls out at the attempted hit, "You'll pay for that, Fork-Tongue!"
He hefts his sword, moving forward with a 5ft step, and lashes out with a full attack against the larger Yuan-ti. He uses heavy swings, power attacking with furious focus.
If attacks 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (3) + 14 = 17and/or 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9 hit then 2d6 + 16 ⇒ (5, 2) + 16 = 23 plus 1d6 ⇒ 6 cold damage and 2d6 + 16 ⇒ (1, 2) + 16 = 19 and 1d6 ⇒ 1 cold damage.
Pinna jinks aside from the blob of acid and drops the rice bowl and soapy sponge. Noticing the big man is swinging a sword in the direction of the large Yuan-Ti, she nimbly ducks between the attackers to flank.
Move: Tumble to G11, 40' of movement, no prob.
Acrobatics: vs DC (whatver CMD for each of the two Yuan-Ti +2; aberrations have not action so cannot take AoO): 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (20) + 15 = 35
Standard: if she arrives safely at G11, stunning fist on the big Yuan-Ti. If it works, he drops what he's holding and picking up weapons provokes.
Stunning fist (fort save DC only 16): 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (12) + 10 = 22 for 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8
Lanwin quickly recovers from his disoriented state and sizes up the situation, discerning who is friend and foe. He calls upon Lathander's favor to aid his makeshift allies.
Casting Bless. All allies have +1 to hit and +1 on saves vs fear effects.
He's got a good CMD but you still made it. You are now flanking (+2 to hit I believe) and bless just went up. So assuming nothing else happens, you hit soundly. His Fort save --> 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21. I'll wait for E. to go and then I'll go and update the map and situation...
Yes, it's +2 to hit flanking but I also get +1 to damage when flanking (dirty fighter). So damage is 9. Unless E. blows things out of the water. Which, knowing Taig, he might. :)
E. manages to sneak a crossbow bolt into the leg of the spellcaster while Pinna gets around the big guy and soundly smacks smacks him in ... the kidney?
These two strange creatures advance on the group swinging strange blades they have coming out of their arms...
"snakes can be interesting, you know, they have such lovely patterns on their scales, but I don't think these are very nice snakes, do you? oh, well,...."
She points her finger at the nearest snake creature (F8) and calls forth flame in the elemental language.
This one's on the house. The next one may cost you, said icily.
Ranged Touch Attack: 1d20 + 8
If struck: 4d8 damage.
She howls in rage. (That hurt.) She screams something to the big guy...
in draconic:
"This is all your fault. But there may still be a chance to redeem yourself. That one..." pointing at Vassago "...looks to be of planar origin. Let's focus on him and get out of here."
The big guy growls at his little wizard and moves toward Vassago. (Vortic and Pinna get attacks of opportunity if you want them.) And then he attempts to hit Vassago...
1d20 + 11 ⇒ (8) + 11 = 19 -- if hit 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14
I need to get new dice
The wizard Yuan-Ti takes a five-foot-step back and casts a spell. (Nothing more visible happens...)
AoO: I take the penalty for Power Attack on this since I'm still power attacking but adding bless.1d20 + 13 ⇒ (6) + 13 = 19 for 2d6 + 16 ⇒ (4, 1) + 16 = 21 plus 1d6 ⇒ 2cold.
Vortic growls, "Quick things, aren't they?" He turns to his left and once again full attacks and power attacks with furious focus on the odd looking snake creature at I9. 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (14) + 15 = 29 for 2d6 + 16 ⇒ (1, 4) + 16 = 21 plus 1d6 ⇒ 1cold and 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (2) + 8 = 10 for 2d6 + 16 ⇒ (5, 3) + 16 = 24 plus 1d6 ⇒ 1cold.
Treppa(Female Humanish Very little class but on the level)
Does Vortic get a bump on his attack of opportunity for the flank with Pinna? He didn't have it on his initial attack and he won't have it once the Yuan Ti moves, but it's flanked when it begins its move.
Does Vortic get a bump on his attack for the flank with Pinna? He didn't have it on his initial attack and he won't have it once the Yuan Ti moves, but it's flanked when it begins its move.
With your odd scream, the big guy notices you and tries to hit you with an attack of opportunity --> 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (20) + 11 = 31 and hits you for 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14 points of damage.
Lanwin told the big guy to stop ... but I don't think he even noticed.
E. was so focused on hitting the spellcaster that he forgot how close he was to the big guy and got to see, first hand, just how sharp scimitars can be.
But between the crossbow bolts, flaming rays and a flurry of feathers and claws, the wizard Yuan-Ti is down and quickly dying.
The two aberrations hardly seem to take notice of their companion's death and continue fighting whoever seems to be closest...
vs. E.
1d20 + 9 ⇒ (7) + 9 = 16 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (5) + 9 = 14
A "gentle" reminder to pay attention to the map. :)
It's new for all of us. If it was a matter of life and death, I probably would have given you a reminder that was a little more gentle. In this case, I felt it fit the circumstance a little.
Vassago breathed a sigh of relief when he noticed that the Yuan-Ti spellcaster was felled ... by an avian. The enclave sure has a sense of humor by placing her in this simulation. But something does not seem right. Gnik Tam did not mention anything of this sort occurring. Or I've been paired with a Thay with an odd sense of humor. But we will see who will best whom yet... he thought to himself. Seeing the scaly brute coming straight at him and witnessing its heavily dealt blows, he knew he had to take it down a notch.
Okay, it looks like I can get two critters with burning hands and just miss Pinna. Casting defensively: DC 17 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19
Burning hands: Ref DC 165d4 ⇒ (2, 2, 1, 1, 3) = 9
The halfling lass frowns. "Bad snakes!" she admonishes and brings her hands up in front of her once more speaking in the language of fire and flames shoot out from her hands at the creatures.
Vortic grimaces at the damage but takes a 5ft step to G7, then makes his attacks. Same set up as above: furious focus, power attack... except he utilizes cleave. His first attack targets the big Yuan-ti, his second attack targets the one at F7.
1d20 + 15 ⇒ (18) + 15 = 33 for 2d6 + 16 ⇒ (1, 1) + 16 = 18 plus 1d6 ⇒ 3cold against the big Yuan-Ti and 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (20) + 13 = 33 for 2d6 + 16 ⇒ (3, 5) + 16 = 24 plus 1d6 ⇒ 1cold against the odd looking one. Vortic's AC drops by 2.
edit: roll to confrim 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (6) + 13 = 19 for 2d6 + 16 ⇒ (2, 6) + 16 = 24.
