Kleora went to stand with Stella and stood close behind her, her chest nearly brushing the aasimar's back as she looked over Stella's shoulder at the contents of the bag. She focused and her eyes began to glow as she examined the card magically. She came up with nothing as far as aura's went and asked, "So, any idea what they're for?"

When she heard John begin to talk about the gun and saw him load it with powder she almost plugged her ears. It was a great relief to her that he removed the powder as she really didn't want to hear that loud blast again anytime soon if she could possibly avoid it.

"I have a feeling if we find what they go to I may know it but there isn't magic. Reminds me of something but I can't put my finger on it."

Turning in such a way they ended up touching Stella's halo turns a little pink. Looking to Sef Stella speaks. "Can you draw us a rough map of what you are talking about? It sounds like you are speaking of two separate doors and areas. It may just be my brain playing tricks with words in my head but a simple drawing will help."

Kleora was delighted at the response she seemed to get from Stella and leaned in even closer, pressing up against her back to whisper in the aasimar's ear.

Stella shuddered as her halo turned bright pink tinged with red. Everything was bathed in its glow. While this hid her blush somewhat it did not hide the fact the tips of her ears were turning red.

"That is cheating. No whispering in the ear."
She whispered back.

Kleora brushed her cheek against Stella's lips when the aasimar whispered her reply and whispered back.

"All's fair in love and war hon, and this certainly isn't war. Besides, you're gorgeous when you blush."

Kleora stepped back then and said, "I agree, a map would be most helpful."

If you can truly promise that I and my family will be safe, I can do my best to draw you a map of where I have seen beyond the doors. Sef tells you. There is something you should know. Something not of this world lies to the east. There was a door near our camp here, just to the east, but is has closed and we cannot open it, and another door to the northeast, which might be open still, but I won’t risk going that way because the gremlins there are too dangerous for our small numbers. Good luck to you in finding your missing friend. I will make them map, give me some time before you leave, in the mean time, please look through what we have collected here and if you find anything you might be able to use take it, and if you have any spare food you can offer, we would be forever in your debt. We are near to staving, as the last place we had begun to try to grow some food for ourselves is now controlled by the gremlins

I am going to post the entire map of the next part of this adventure, even though it shows more than what Sef will draw on her map. I just want things to move a bit quicker

Azariah nodded. "Thank you. If we can, we'll see if we can help with the food situation more permanently, but for now..." Remvoing her pack, Azariah rummaged through the contents, pulling out the bags of Wandermeal, Travel Cake Mix and Trail Rations, along with the cheese. "It's probably enough for maybe twenty meals, all told. Hopefully it will keep your people going for a couple of days." She glanced at the others, seeing if they had any supplies.

John looks through the pile of gear and pulls out a suit of studded leather. "Anyone mind if I wear this?"

"Thank you for the map. Why don't we check out the door to the east and if we can't get it to open try the northeast one?" John says to the group.

Azariah nodded to both John's plan and his loot request, holding up one of the Cure potions for herself. She could use several of the other weapons, the bow included, but preferred her scythe. "It sounds like a reasonable plan."

Stella smiled as she listened and she nodded.

"I can see that. We should be prepared. I have never really tried wearing armor but I can see there being a need for it. I will take the buckler, leathers, and a shortsword. Always good to have a spare weapon. The sunrod may come in handy so I'll take that and the potion. I have thieves tools but another set never hurts and I think the scrolls will come in handy."

She pulled out her own supplies of food leaving herself two days and would hand it over to them.

"Here, this is what I can spare. When we return and go to the surface I will get you much more."

Kleora followed Stella's example and took out three days worth of trail rations from her pack. It wasn't much but it was what she had, "Here, hopefully this helps too." She looked at her companions then, her gaze again lingering on Stella a moment in interest, and asked, "So, what do we know about these...gremlins? Do we have any clue how to fight them?"

The Skulk leader thanks you all for your generosity, and then hurriedly carries off the food that is offered to the rest of her small group of survivors.

Seeing Azariah heading towards the eastern door she looks at the others. "Looks like we are heading East first. Let's go."

The party moves east across the cavern floor, passing the small makeshift huts of the few remaining skulks. It is clear from the number of huts that there were once more of these people here, and a certain sadness is felt by some of you that their number has been reduced through so much hardship.

You reach the eastern end of the cavern and find a strange site. The cavern wall here is mostly solid rock, with a few places that appear to be packed or crumbling dirt. While in the center of the wall, about eight feet above the cavern floor is a solid grey wall that looks like a single piece of metal. This section of the cavern wall is about thirty feet across and twenty feet from top to bottom. In the center of this metal wall is a five, or perhaps six foot diameter hole.

Reaching the hole will require a single climb skill check, the DC is 15. Once one individual reaches the hole, a rope can be lowered, while the climber braches his or her legs on the other side of the hole, making it an easy climb for the rest of you. You cannot take 10 if you are the first climber, but those who use a rope to follow can. Falling from the first climb takes you to the cavern floor, which is about thirteen or fourteen feet in total, doing 1d6 damage

John looks up a the hole and then to the group, "I'm not the best climber, if someone else here is I can give you a boost up."

Kleora shook her head in response to John's question and said, "I'm afraid I'm a very poor climber, physical work and exertion isn't my thing. Despite that I'll try and go up first if you wish though I won't be of much help I don't think."

John tries valiantly to assist Azariah in her climb but puts his hands in the wrong places and drops her.

John then blushes and stammers "I didn't mean... I.. uh.. Sorry."

"No, no, it's OK. You tried." Azariah coughed. "Just...be a little more careful next time. Where your hands end up, I mean." There were definitely going to be awkward conversations if hands went to the wrong place. "Anyone else wanna try?"

Azariah tries to climb, but takes hold of a lose rock. As she is about to fall, Robert tries to steady her legs, and well, it does not end well.

The hole in the wall stands open, fifteen feet above the floor, taunting the group

Seeing the failed attempts so far Kleora said, "Alright, my turn I guess. If we have some rope tie it around my waist and I'll try and take it up with me. That should make things easier for the rest of us." She waited for someone to do so and to help her up and then took her go at climbing.

Sef watches the party from a safe distance, stifling a laugh as the group struggles to get up the wall, and then calls out to them

We have a ladder. We built it a while ago just so that we could get to that hole. You can use it. Wait there, we will bring it to you.

After a brief delay, the three skulks come toward the party from out of the darkness to the west carrying a tall ladder built from lashed together rods and bits and pieces of wood, and other materials.

The ladder will allow safe access to the hole. The party can then reach the first area of the next part of this adventure.

Torch, in the Caves Below the Hill
Day 2, turn 74 (9 turns remain of your water breathing ability)

The group ascends the makeshift ladder, which reaches to just below the opening in the cavern wall, one by one with John going first. The small chamber on the other side of the hole is in a sort of semi-soft greyish light, emanating from long tube like devices at the ceiling of the chamber, eight feet from the floor. Robert determines there are no immediate threats, though a partially opened door is just ten feet to the northeast. Placing his rifle on the floor, he then helps the others as they leave the ladder and climb through the hole.

You have entered a strange sort of room, something built, but how it was built below the hill here in torch, by whom, or when, you cannot tell. The floor is a thin layer of dirt and small rocks but shuffling your feet you can tell that there is a smooth floor below the debris. The floor is made of some sort of polished stone, or maybe a type of metal you are not familiar with, but it is solid, and does not give any at all if you push hard downward with your foot.

To the northwest and southeast this room gives way to a gently curving passageway and in each direction the ceiling has collapsed, choking the way with stones the size of a halfling and piles of broken debris that must have been the ceiling and walls a long time ago. Among the rocks and rubble of the cave in you see bits of wire, and twisted tubes of metal and broken glass.

To the northeast there is a doorway. The doorway is blocked by some sort of sliding door that drops from the ceiling. There is a gap at the bottom of the door that is about two and a half feet high. When you approach this crawl space you hear an unmistakable humming sound.

Azariah nodded, somewhat doubtfully. She wasn't sure she would be able to move the door, given whatever mechanism ran it seemed to be long dead, even with everyone's help. But that didn't mean she couldn't try.

Stella looked around seeing the rubble choked walkways wondering how it happened.

This world was strange indeed. Dragging her feet in the dirt she would kneel to touch the floor to see if it felt like metal or stone.

Looking towards the door that was lifted she lowered her head and tried to look under. She wasn't particularly close to the door when she did this though.

The new passageways might have been of interest if they weren't choked with collapsed ceilings and so it was the door that caught her interest but it was the debris in the rubble that really caught her eye. While they worked on figuring a way to open the door Kleora went to where the rubble was and examined it for anything that might be of use, after all you never knew what you could find if you looked hard enough.

John takes up a position near the hole in the wall and raises his weapon, telling the others he will provide protection as they try to open the partially opened door across the way.

Unboloth and Azariah kneel and take a grip of the edge of the door just as Stella and Kleora begin to try and look into the room beyond.

Unboloth and Azariah find that with their combined strength they are able to raise the door slowly, as if it has some sort of resistance built into it.

Kleora:
You begin to get a feeling of danger when before you realize what might be causing it, you see the legs of a machine, exactly like the one you encountered in Val Baine’s workshop, moving toward the door as it is opening. You can shout a warning – stopping the door from opening all the way, or tell everyone what the danger is, and roll initiative

At almost the same moment that Kleora speaks out a warning, from below and behind you there comes a cry of alarm

Unbolath, who had been waiting near the hole, leaps back to the ladder, telling the rest of you to go on, while he doubles back to be sure the skulks are not in any serious danger.

Azariah continues to raise the door, and the sound of the machine on the other side grows louder. When the door is opened enough to reach five feet the machine rushes at Azariah its intent seems to be to cause her harm

Kleora was simply stunned that Everyone but Azariah listened to her, so stunned in fact that she hesitated before acting. Finally she came to her senses and focused on conjuring up acid, thoughts of the acrid scent and the sizzling sound of it, and the emotion of pain as it ate away at the skin, and then sent the small globule at the attacking machine.

Shocked that Unboloth would choose to answer the call for help from behind them instead of face the current threat, Azariah spins left then right trying to get oriented to the situation and recover her weapon from the floor where she had placed it as she helped lift the door.
John reacts almost immediately, firing a shot at the machine as it advances

Stella manages to conjure a small missile of acid and directs toward the advancing machine, but judges the machines speed incorrectly, striking the wall behind it as it quickly reaches Azariah

Azariah is barely able to strike back as the machine is right upon her before she is ready
