This thread will serve as a clearing place for questions about the campaign. I would prefer that you post as your character (to this thread) rather than as your player.

There is a basic introduction to the setting under the campaign info tab. This information will be expanded and updated regularly, so please, if you can, check it often.

The game thread will open with all of the ready characters arriving, together, at the main gate of the Fort with a caravan. The details of the caravan will be posted soon. You may use the discussion thread to introduce yourself to the other players. It will be assumed that the caravan left Crystal Lake 5 days before the game begins, so you would have had 5 days to learn a little about the other ready characters. New characters will join the game with the next caravan, but can join this caravan’s characters if they can post that they are ready, here in the recruitment thread, sometime in the next four or five days.

Sithundan checking in

Male Human Witch

Grimmwaldt checking in, although I'm not yet sure of how I import my char sheet to my profile the way Sithundan did. :/

Edit. Found it, nevermind.

How well do we need to know the other characters before we start off?

male

Well, first you want to create an alias for the character, then cut and past the information into the alias using the eidt alias function

(see, above where I asked that you post to this thread as your character and not as your player, or more specifically as the "alias" you create to be the character and not your regular profile, helps to keep it clean and I am easily confused by who is the character and who is the player)

Male Human Witch 1; HP: 9/9; AC 13; Initiative +3; Fort +3; Ref +3; Will +3;

(I just figured out how to do this, sorry)

I'm ready now.

NPC: F Kobold

It might take a few tries to learn how to manage the "profile" of your new alias, try to make the data I have included with this alias appear on the header line like I have done

(note: The numbers associated with this alias, Milana, are only a quick "plug in" attempt and will change as this NPC is fully developed)

Male Human Witch 1; HP: 9/9; AC 13; Initiative +3; Fort +3; Ref +3; Will +3;

That helped. Thanks Milana. :)

Checking in here. I'll try and figure out what info on Derrick would have been gleaned over the course of the caravan trip.

M Human Fighter (Archery) 2

Dolin seems rather friendly, but he has really bad social skills. He's kinda like a puppy who wants to play, but who bursts the ball every time he retrieves it. You tend to get more of him than you want pretty quickly.

One of his problems is an internal focus. He tends to talk about what comes to his mind, even if you are already talking about something unrelated, and frequently WHILE you are trying to get your comments made.

One of his favorite topics is the crafting and maintenance of weapons, and it seems to be a topic he actually knows more than a little about. As part of this, though, he likes to talk about the history (or lineage) of his tools and the anvil he's bringing with him, even though the Fort should long since have had a proper forge established.

Welcome! Great characters so far. Is anyone having trouble finding the maps at the top of the page?

Edren was a military man, through and through. His gruff demeanor when he trained with one of the others showed this. He barked orders when watching others hone their skills and showed them drills to help with their forms. All the while, he thought of the savagery inherent in war and hoped that Fort Horizon would be different.

Edren is (effectively) a drill sergeant and he wants to use these skills to make Fort Horizon more independent than it is now; he's seen too many small villages that were lost because they couldn't protect themselves.

Off of the battlefields and training grounds, he is friendly, almost at odds with his military self. He enjoys a good brew and the company of friends. He likes to listen to stories of adventures that others have had, but tends to avoid telling stories of his own.

He enjoys whittling small pieces of wood and has become somewhat adept at it, spending much of his time in the field practicing.

Sorry for the delay in getting here! I still need to purchase some mundane equipment and deal with my firearm situation, but otherwise I think I'm all set and ready. I'll have those last few things sorted tomorrow.

Male Tiefling Slayer 2 | HP 0/24 | AC 18, touch 14, FF 14; CMD 20 | Fort +7, Ref +8, Will +2 | Init +5, Perception +6 (darkvision 60 ft.)

Derrick is an outgoing and friendly young man, quick with a laugh and a jest. He's obviously a warrior, with his large frame and athletic appearance, not to mention the fine weapons he carries. His sword in particular seems to be a natural extension of him--he wears it easily at his hip, blade up in the fashion of the old warriors.

Besides conversing with the other travelers, Derrick seems to exercise and meditate often. Every morning he spends several minutes in silent prayer, then does various exercises--jogging, push-ups, and crunches. He then moves into simple martial arts-style movements, though slow--they're obviously not a strong point of his. (Think tai chi, as practiced by a novice) However, his swordplay is impressive, with quick cuts and an economy of movement that is surprising for someone who doesn't seem quite so agile or fast. In particular, his ability to draw the katana lighting fast and strike with it at the same time is uncanny. His skill with the naginata he carries is also apparent, though it's a less graceful weapon and he uses it mainly in powerful thrusts and chops.

Male Halfling Cleric/2 | AC 16, T 12, FF 15 |HP: 15/8 | F +4, R +1, W +5 | Init 1, P 2, I 1 | CMD 10

Here is Valind.
Valind takes his role as a cleric of Valindor seriously.
He'll follow the contract for the caravan to the letter. Anything outside that he'll charge for - maybe not very much, but something. He won't accept gifts without offering something in exchange. This includes information, though he'll try and be subtle about slipping "payment" facts into conversation.

He's a likeable enough fellow, excited about setting up a practice (as doctor and lawyer) in the fort. He seems unable to understand that someone might not like him due to a crazy high diplomacy roll when he wants it

He does see halfling and then dwarven society as the epitome of civilisation.

He's very, very fast for a halfling. Even loaded down he can keep up with an unloaded human, and on a good day he can keep up with a horse. He's also one of the smallest halflings around.

It seems whoever equipped him gave him human-sized equipment (thought his armour and weapon is appropriate) and he is often struggling to write in a comically oversized journal at night, enormous quill pen in his hand. He can use his cooking pot for a makeshift bathtub.

Male Human Fighter (Viking) HP 13/13; Initiative+3; Fort+5; Ref+3; Will+0

Sitting among the other adventurers is Bjarki, a giant of a man who looks strong in ways that only experienced sailors do, merrily chatting and drinking as if he didn't have a care in the world.
He spends a lot of time on his appearance, his red beard is extremely well kept and carefully braided and his face is quite well washed for a traveler.

In between drinks and chatter he does some maintenance on his weapons, a Battleaxe, some javelins and a long and very wicked looking sword he refers to as a Langseax (Mechanically speaking it's a Nodachi. He is very impressed of how much Dolin knows about weapons.

He is fascinated by the exotic meditative practices of Derrick and have been asking questions about the nature of them whilst taking notes. Bjarki freely admits that whilst he can see the merits of Derriks physical exercises the ideas behind them is the direct opposite to his own very outgoing, aggressive approach to combat. He is really looking forward to seeing what Derrik can do in battle.

He does like Valind but he's very very worried that he might accidentally trample him underfoot, so being around the Halfling is somewhat unnerving to Bjarki.

Male Tiefling Slayer 2 | HP 0/24 | AC 18, touch 14, FF 14; CMD 20 | Fort +7, Ref +8, Will +2 | Init +5, Perception +6 (darkvision 60 ft.)

Derrick is very open and happy to discuss his practices with Bjarki, though deep, probing questions often result in talk of "ancient secrets of a lost art." In turn, Derrick is interested in Bjarki's fine sword and the sailor's combat style. After Bjarki expresses the apparent difference in their approach to fighting, Derrick shakes his head. "Senseless aggression with no regard to defense is unwise, but worrying about your own safety will get you killed. Go into battle ready to die, and you will survive; go into battle hoping to live, and you'll be killed. That's bushido combat."

Grand Lodge

Human Male Fighter (Polearm Master) 1 HP:9/24, AC:17:12:15, Init:+4, Per:+1, Intuition:+6, Saves:4:2:1, Attack: +6 (guisarme)

Edren approaches Bjarki and Derrick and, hopefully onobtrusively, joins their conversation.

"Wise words, Derrick. The best way to keep yourself from being on your back is to put your enemy there first. I will admit, though, Bjarki, that I am a bit more methodical in my approach, but I can certainly see the effects that a big man like yourself would have when charging at a foe, weapons bared!"

Edren then looks at Derrick's weapon, a bit of wonder in his eyes, "I must say, I've not seen the like of this weapon before." Edren looks at his guisarme for comparison." That is a very interesting design, almost like a sword attached to a stave."

Gruingar here. The alias has the background and personality. The crunch will be in there this evening. (I'll make another alias for the eidolon.) Fetchling summoner whose eidolon is primarily a scout.

While several people are sitting around the fire one evening, someone asks Gruingar why he is here.
Gruingar motions for someone to pass the bottle of liquor to him for another swig. Why am I here? Well, since this brandy is so fine I will actually tell you why I am here.
It’s is ‘cause here is not there!

Guingar slams back a mouthfull from the bottle. Then nearly coughs up a lung while gasping for breath.
Maybe I better I better slow down a bit. But he still motions for someone to pass the bottle back for another drink.
Whole buggered tribe is just servantses of that rotted nihiloi Shashgrad. brrph Come to that wer nots even valued servants. Belike it thinks thems spooky zoogs is better’n us.
This time he just takes a sip from the last of the bottle then whispers, Elders always say, Just blend in. Serve as you must. Don’t be seen. It’s the way of survival. It’s traditional…’ Empty idiots.
He sags down on the log he's using as a seat clutching the empty bottle like it’s a life line and mutters, Never again. Nev goin back. Per soon ‘n I wills has nuff pow’r nev’r srevnat no ones…
He suddenly stand up and loudly proclaims, God’s rotted never belighted again!
Then he slowly slithers to the ground and starts snoring into the rotting leaves.

Quickly becomes evident that Gruingar (and the snake that is often with him) is a very unobtrusive person. Very easy to lose track of him.

Tends to be be a bit timid and ingratiating (except when he's had too much to drink).

No one here has really seen them in a fight, but if you were to want something checked without drawing alot of attention seems like they could probably handle it.

male

Thanks, everyone (Gruingar, great intro, but be careful a bit, your characters actually come into existance while part of a five day caravan from Crystal Lake (Fort Crystal Lake) to Fort Horizon).

There is new information about Dwargleland posted to the Campaign Information Thread, read it, if that sort of thing is of interest to you.

Cheers!

Ah, sorry. Guess I assumed it was more of a long range caravan that had been stopping at various places along the way. I will modify it some.

I can't see the maps here at work. But that shouldn't usually be much of an issues. I will check maps before or after work when needed. Or if I'm really pressed I might be able to check it at lunch.

The Caravan
The caravan is lead by An attractive dwarven woman, with red gold hair worn piled and pinned on the top of her head. She wears fine clothing, in dark brown and black, made for rugged exposure.

Dwarf Female, Paulina Southmiller (She is young, and attractive, an agent of the Winter Leaf Tobacco Company, and a co agent , through binding contract, to the Western Alliance Exploratory Company, She is responsible for the “goods” of this caravan

400 lbs of dried Tobacco
600 lbs of Flour
250 lbs of Sugar
300 lbs pemmican
50 lbs of “spices”
150 lbs “canned” butter oil
Fourteen Muskets
25 lbs of Black Powder
40 lbs of Shot
200 lbs of raw iron
60 lbs of assorted tools (for working wood, including two very large saws)
500 lbs of dried pressed vegetables
Nineteen chickens, three roosters
Four pigs (one boar, three sows)
Four cows (dairy cows, they have all caved and are good milking cows)
Twenty two “fifths” of Aeromnian Whiskey
Sixteen bottles of Zieferland Wine
Three small casks (of twenty gallons each) of Dwargleland Ale
Two barrels of Mok Turtle Fat
200 lbs of heavy canvas in four rolls
These goods are transported in three wagons, the cows walk, but the pigs and chickens ride in the last wagon, with the paying travelers.

She is also responsible for delivering two “company men”

Karl Drespor, dwarf. He is old, and a talker. He claims that he and his associate (Jeannine Renotuer, a Halfling) are going to join three others who are already at Fort Horizon for an expedition into the mountains to collect and examine soil and mineral samples

Jeannine Rentour, Halfling, young and attractive, she is a citizen of Aeromnia and a reluctant signer to a contract with the WEAC. She is nervous, and cautious, but also excited to put to use her inventions (chemical test kits designed to quickly determine the presence of valuable mineral deposits).

In addition to these supplies (that are to be delivered to the Captain at Fort Horizon) there are several paying passengers with this caravan, and three drivers, who are two humans and one elf

They are;
Phil Thaloman (Human Male)
Mikako Hinomushi (Human Female)
T’pohole Kiwali’ho (Elven Male)

Thanks to Edren Kent, we have our first xp award to Derrick Tramsen. Derrick receives 10 experience points

Look to the Campaign Info thread for House Rule #2 for more information about this particular xp award process.

Please track your experience points on the information saved to your alias.

Bjarki, who went to get a bunch of foaming tankards rejoins Derrik and Edren, checking carefully that there are no Halflings beneath his feet as he does this. He hands out Ale as he rejoins the conversation.

To Derrik:
"Good! That is the only way to fight; til the end! I can't understand how you can contain your enthusiasm though. Wouldn't one always want to get to the fighting is instead of waiting around for it to come to you?"

To Edren
"Aye you are right! But that is why we need different men for different jobs. I bet that long Guissamme (he mispronounces Guisarme, thanks to all the Ale) is great at keeping those smelly Goblins at bay when the going gets tough."
He slaps his big sword merrily at the thought.
I think we can get a lot done between the three of us alone, Hah!

To Sithundan
Oh we are not for worrying! We be looking forward to the battles to come! Do you want a drink as well?
As the mysterious stranger slumps down, Bjarki offers him a tankard.
To Gruingar:
I think you need another drink. I know how it feels to have good for nothin's in the family GAH !.... Is that your...Pet?

The startled Bjarki quickly puts some distance between himself and the Eidolon.

Edren accepts the tankard gratefully and takes a long pull from it.

Edren laughs aloud at Bjarki's comment. "Indeed it does! It also keeps them tripped up to afford my brothers-in-arms a chance to clean up!" He takes another pull from the tankard. "The only downside is when the buggers get too close. I do have my blade close for those situations, though." He pats the short sword strapped to his side when he says this.

I'm not sure if Edren was able to hear Sithundan's comment, but I'm going to assume he was too busy with his drinking that he did not.

After hearing Gruingar's tale, Edren just shakes his head, "You are a strange man, Gruingar. Someday, I hope to know just what it is you are talking about!" Edren lets out a laugh and takes a final pull on his tankard, draining it of ale. "More ale for everyone!"

Okay, there is some more xp awards to toss out. Derric, Edrin, Sithundan, and Gruingar all get 10 experience points. Now that we are sort of saying this is a tavern. Let's say that this is where you are. Go to the Game thread to read about this tavern.

I am opening the Gamne thread today.

It will be a large post

You can hang around here, in the discussion thread until you are sure you are ready to post to the game thread.

someone posted while I was crafting my posts, so there are more rewards to hand out. Please keep track of them, and remember when you are addressed, BY NAME, you get 10 xp's up to 50 every day.

I have three seperate post to make to open the Game thread, so if you see one or two posts go up, please refrain from making a post until I've finished with the third, okay?

No worries Finn!

Hey! I've noticed that some charaters have not gotten on board with House Rule #1

for example, Perception is not a Class Skill for Rangers (Intuition is)! so please take a minute to familiarize yourself with this rule, okay?

Quote:
Every character will receive 10 (x their level) in experience points (up to a maximum of 5 times per day) every time the character is addressed, by name, by another character. This is meant to encourage and reward player character interaction.

I assume you mean the in game day not posting day. =)

male

Whoa, sorry, should have clarified that.

But wait, let's think about that.
How fast can we get through a game day?

Hmm, this is a dilemma.

Maybe it should be posting day. Yes, let's try that reward handed out every day of posting, up to five times (you certainly do not have to post five times a day, but with this many characters the chances of five different characters talking to you in one posting day is pretty good). It should be almost simple to earn 50 experience points every day that you are active on the threads.

I will be traveling the next few days.

I'm pretty sure I will have internet access in the evenings. But it not I haven't ditched you, I'll be back Sunday night at the latest.

male

Teekmorg was supposed to post here, and not in the game thread, but oh well

Now let me clear up something about my notations

I will be keeping track of time, by identifying what turn it is in the header of my posts (usually) and turns are ten minutes long. None of you need to worry about what turn it is, unless I start tracking time in Rounds, and usually I will call for initiative rolls before I start doing that. I will allow a certain amount of exchanges between the characters before I move to the next turn. If some characters are separated from other characters and a disparity of time occurs, I will identify what time it is for the characters I am addressing.

if combat is running you will see this

Initiative Order:
me 20
you 17
the other guy 10

above the time notation and this

DM notes:
Monster A has taken 12 hit points of damage and is stunned
Monster B has taken no damage

at the bottom of my posts
