The tunnels continue on, leading deeper beneath the Kortos Mounts until they eventually open into a large cavern. What must have once been beautifully carved reliefs and inscriptions have since weathered heavily, their features dulled and softened to the point that it is hard to distinguish what each once depicted. A wide tunnel exits the cavern on its far side, and blue-burning torches line the passageway’s walls.

Well, hell!

Vlazis:
All of the friezes you are able to read remind you of stories you have read from History and Future of Humanity, Arodens holy text. However, they are also slightly different, enough to make you think that perhaps these predate the known versions of the book. You get the feeling that this room, although important to Aroden, is not a shrine or holy place. Rather, it is more a space for learning and knowledge.. perhaps learning ways to honor Aroden and keep his memory clear??

The first frieze you interpret is portraying Aroden as The Artist, painting murals on the walls of impressive buildings. This is associated with the story of Aroden having painted the city of Absalom with beautiful colors so that it might awe all who visited.

The second frieze you can decipher is that of Aroden weighing and trading coins of different sizes, a reference to a proverb that peace brings trade and prosperity to all people. In order to call upon Arodens blessings, it seems that a trade was necessary at some point.

In the third frieze, Aroden the Scholar is depicted writing on a piece of parchment then reading from it to a passersby. This depicts the idea that Aroden smiled on those who recorded history and other knowledge to share it with others.

Lastly, The Soldier is depicted bearing a lantern through the streets of a city, following the dead god's prophecy that the vigilant shall carry light to the darkest corners of the world to banish the shadows.

The true knowledge here is that this does not match the teachings from the History and Future of Humanity. Or at least not the version that has been passed down. It may be that, as with so much of Aroden's legacy, it has been replaced by truer teachings, but the progression of knowledge is still of great interest.

Theon listens intently to Vlazis' depiction of the scenes and how they do not match that in his holy teachings. "How strange. Although it is not the first, or the last time in which beings have changed teachings, or even history, to match that which they prefer. This is definitely an exciting find!" He takes notes on the scenes depicted and plans to compare them to what is taught in the Future of Humanity.

Skai leads the way through a narrow neck and into the next chamber of the caves. The soft light of the surrounding fungus mixes with the flickering glow of the nearby torches to reveal a grand chamber. A large pool of water along the chamber’s southern edge reflects the blue and green radiance to illuminate the massive stalactites that cling to the ceiling overhead, matched by a number of stalagmites reaching upwards for their counterparts. Two other tunnels branch off from this area, leading to the east and west. The chambers ceiling is almost lost in shadow 20 feet above your heads.

Rising up from the pool is a column of rock with steeply sloped sides and a flat top, as if someone had sawn off the top of a massive stalagmite. A miniature city carved from this same stone occupies nearly the entire surface. Tiny trinkets such as ancient coins, polished semiprecious stones, and ornately braided loops of string are scattered throughout the diorama, and pale cave frogs clamber atop it. The smooth cavern floor is covered in gravel and pebbles along the edge of the pool, and several foot-long centipedes prowl among the gravel in their search for prey. Strikingly accurate and beautiful, the diorama has the air of a long used but even longer forgotten shrine and alter. It is obvious from the trinkets that many have paid homage at this site.

Within the pool of water, a person sits with his back to you. The person does not react in any way to your entrance to the cavern.

Would you be willing to share with us what you know about this place? We found what seemed to be teachings from an older, or at least a different version of Aroden's History and Future of Humanity. And here we find a frankly magnificent depiction of Absalom. Is this place still sacred to The Last Azlanti?

I think Theon has the cloak, though I don't think he's wearing it.

I don't believe anyone was able to identify the cloak, so Theon probably would not just toss on a magical cloak without knowing its properties. However...

Theon looks around the room and at the depiction of Absalom, but the group's attention is redirected at the gillman standing amid the waters. He thinks back to the cloak found at the bottom of the pit and wonders if it belongs to the gillman. He produces the cloak and approaches, but does not get too close. "Goodsir, we found this at the bottom of the pit on the way into the caverns here. I am curious if this is yours? Did you accidentally drop it into the pit?"

Actually, you have a 38, as the cloak gives you a +8 to the diplomacy check! Which exceeds the DC by quite a bit. We really only needed that or one more aid!

The gillmans eyes go wide as Theon pulls out the cloak and offers it up. He then bows deeply to the man, gratitude in his tone and features. "This is not mine, but it does belong to my people. That is the cloak of one of our pilgrims. You can see my own just off there to the side." he says, gesturing to his own pile of clothing neatly stacked near the edge of the water. No one rolled a perception to see this!!

He continues "If I may, I will return it to the pilgrims family. They would be happy to have this returned to them. A number of our people have gone missing lately while communing with the waters, and evil seems to be pervading these tunnels. It has not yet attacked this holy chamber, but I fear that the time is not far off for such an attempt. Speaking of these holy mysteries, I cannot tell you much, for my people do not worship Aroden. However, we have shared this cave for several centuries in peace. They with their carvings and their little city, and the Azlanti with our waters.
The faithful used to come and contemplate the lessons shown in the carvings in the other room, and then perform rites of worship here, at this city-shrine. Imitation is indeed a form of flattery and worship, is it not? Although no pilgrims of Aroden have come in a great many years and the holiness is quickly fading from the shrine, I believe that there still may be some holy spark that remains for the faithful."

Vlazis nods thoughtfully. Interesting that a remnant of Aroden's power can still be felt here, but I agree, between your waters and what spark of divinity rests here, this place must be carefully guarded if it is to be preserved. What can you tell us about this.. evil that is pervading the tunnels?

|Ruins |WBGoblins|RotRL| Emerald Spire|

"Nothing specific. Only that our pilgrims have been disappearing within these tunnels and caves. Both of the other exits from this room have an evil feel to them, so I did not go any farther when I came here. This is, after all, all that we come here for.. to worship and commune in the waters. I agree that this is a site of historical significance and we should do what we can to ensure its security. Perhaps our people could come to a mutual arrangement to ensure the protection of this place." He eyes the tunnels wearily while speaking, as if expecting some monster to leap forth any moment...

The gillman shrugs as a voice calls out from the shadows. "They would do any number of things. I believe the carvings in the antechamber there are examples teaching ways that one might earn Arodens blessings.. literal representations of honoring the god through recreating his stories. Skai reviews her notes from what Vlazis explained earlier.

Notes:

Looking at the third one, she rips a piece of parchment out of her journal, writes a few fun facts on it, then reads them out loud.

Theon nods to the gillman. "Understood. I will likewise deliver a message to the leaders of the Society in hopes an arrangement can be made."

When Skai pulls out the parchment he smiles and chuckles, but then it gives him an idea. He reads over the remaining notes from the frieze and then glances at the imitation city, noting the stones and other offerings... specifically the ancient coins. "What better way to start trade than to offer up coinage." He removes a gold coin from his belt pouch and places it near the other coins.
