GKLM: 1d4 ⇒ 2
All four "water" symbols simultaneously shimmer with blue light, which then seems to travel over the pillar and into Kandor. The dwarf himself glows blue for an instant, but then the light fades.
Tiny gill-like slits magically form behind Kandor's ears!
Kandor, you have gained the ability to breathe underwater, but only for a few minutes. You also gain a +5 bonus on Swim skill checks during this time. Remember, the ACP from your shield only applies if you are 'wearing' it, meaning you can stow it on your person, lose its AC bonus, but ignore its ACP component.
Kandor, servant of Desna |
"Well that is unexpected, but that is what you get for messing with magic items." Kandor mumbles as he feels behind his ears.
"So I can get now easily to the other side, but I do not trust that magic sword over there for one little bit." He continues. "Anyone willing to join me to investigate?" He asks the others.
Gôlgast |
Gôlgast pulls his rope out of his backpack and offers it to Kandor and Magwyn.
"I can't swim at all."
"But you can use this rope."
"But drag this rope behind you so Lugert and I can pull you out if anything goes amiss."
"We could also use the rope to drag that sword over here, if you like."
GM Wicked |
Brilliant! We'll worry about how the "rope" impacts your swim checks if it's needed. Should I assume Magwyn and Kandor attempt to swim across?
Lugert, Half-orc Ranger |
Lugert then looks down at the water and sniffs the pool. We should probably make sure this water won't make you sick.
Survival: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8
Kandor, servant of Desna |
"Okay, Let's dive in. says Kandor while he straps his shield on his back.
swim, strenght, AC penalty, water runes, guidance: 1d20 + 2 - 2 + 5 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 2 - 2 + 5 + 1 = 14
GM Wicked |
As Magwyn and Kandor enter the dark waters, a heavy splash occurs nearby as a monstrous, lobster-like creature emerges from beneath the surface! It snaps its claws aggressively, moving in the strike!
While Kandor is able to tread the water easily (Move at half-speed) Magwyn sinks right below its surface! Luckily, Lugert is able to pull him back to the surface just as the creature approaches.
The reefclaw won initiative! It’s up first, followed by the PCs!
Round 1
Conditions:
Dim light (only affects Magwyn)
Effects:
The creature snaps at Magwyn with both its claws, but only clanks against his heavy armor.
Everyone is up!

Round 2
Conditions:
Dim light (only affects Magwyn)
Effects:
Lugert readied action to attack reefclaw if it moves in range.
Golgast curses as his bullet flies wide, actually skipping across the surface of the pond twice before sinking with a heavy plop. Lugert draws his pick and waits for the prey to come to him. Magwyn unsheaths his sword and attempts to fight back, but amid the chaos of the splashing waves he is unable to land a solid blow.
Kandor, meanwhile, moves surprisingly quickly through the water toward the island beyond.
The reefclaw continues its mindless assault against the heavily-armored warpriest, its claws ineffectively grasping at metal.
Everyone is up!

Round 3
Conditions:
Dim light (only affects Magwyn)
Effects:
Lugert readied action to attack reefclaw if it moves in range.
Kandor and Magwyn make a big show of splashing in the water, though the crab is far too quick in and has the advantage of its home terrain.
Lugert and Magwyn, positioned away from the fray as they are, are able to take their time and both strike telling blows against the reefclaw’s scales.
The creature thrashes wildly, now turning its attention on the dwarf. It latches onto his armor with both claws, crunching metal and bone.
4 damage to Kandor. Kandor, the reefclaw has “grabbed” you. Using the simplified rules, this means you cannot move from your current square and can’t break free while it’s grabbing you. You are still free to attack, though if you cast you’ll need to make a concentration check or lose the spell.
Everyone is up!

I think Lugert's going to be a switch-hitter ranger with these kind of ranged attack rolls.

Round 3
Conditions:
Dim light (only affects Magwyn)
Effects:
As he sees his ally in peril, Lugert sends another air whistling through the air. It lands with incredible precision, impaling what might be the creature’s “brain.”
A death spasm seizes the creature, and its claws clamp down on Kandor reflexively. Special Ability: Death Frenzy.. Its strength has waned, however, and it fails to injure Kandor further.

He then casts detect magic again.
if he sees nothing suspicious he will grab the sword and swim back
GM Wicked |
Kandor searches the small island and finds several items. There are two potions, a stash of 175gp in a leather sack and, most importantly, an exquisite longsword. The grip and pommel are shaped into twin, horned draonic heads. The cross guards are twin dragon wings, while the chappe is forged into the fearsome head of a dragon. Kandor’s detect magic indicates a strong evocation aura emanating from the sword.
Kandor stows the items and, being especially careful with the masterful sword, makes his way safely back across the pond. Presenting these items to Golgast, the magus examines them closely.
Golgast Spellcraft: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20
The potions are of invisibility and levitate.
The longsword is enchanted, this much you can easily determine, but you aren’t quite able to discern the exact nature of its magic.
Gôlgast |
"Well done, everyone!"
"We have a potion of Levitate and one of Invisibility."
"This fine sword looks like it's for fighting dragons."
"It probably does a lot of damage."
"We probably need to use it battle find out exactly what it does."
"I am guessing that if there is a dragon down here,"
"then someone should have this sword and the invisibility potion both."
Lugert, Half-orc Ranger |
This looks like a fine weapon. It was crafted with a lot more precision than my pick.
Lugert will take the sword and fight with it instead of his pick if no one else wants to use it.
Gôlgast |
"You would be best to have this sword, Lugert."
"You are the most robust of our number."
"Take the potion of invisibility, to approach unnoticed."
"You should get a crippling attack when we confront the drake."
I don't know how effective invisibility is with a dragon.
But it would improve Lugert's chances of getting a surprise strike in!
And as a player, I also think he's got the best chance of pulling it off.
GM Wicked |

Without knowledge (arcana), you really don't :D. Post coming in awhile.
GM Wicked |
Lugert claims the draconic longsword. It feels oddly light for its size, though its blade is the sharpest you’ve ever seen.
The four of you make your way west, through the small passageway and back into the goblin throne room. The bodies of the four slain goblin guards still lie motionless, the pools of blood beneath them now beginning to clot and congeal.
The only obvious, unexplored area is to the north, where a 20-foot high cliff stands before you. At the top, the cavern looks to continue on into a pitch black chamber.
Crunchy bits: Getting into this chamber is not going to be easy. The cliff is relatively smooth, and climbing it requires a DC 20 Climb skill check. Each successful check allows you to climb upward a distance equal to half your speed. If you fail by 5 or more, you fall from where you were when you made the check (and may take falling damage).

Gôlgast |
My climb skill is lacking at +0 without my gear (-2 with it).
I think Lugert and/or Magwyn should go up there first with the rope to make easier for Kandor and I.
And with a Perception of -1, Gôlgast isn't the best choice to scout ahead in a place like this. :o
Like Magwyn, Gôlgast also lacks darkvision.
Although Gôlgast does have the Dancing Lights cantrip.
GM Wicked |
I didn't realize Golgast traded out darkvision. Thanks for mentioning that. Also, Lugert, what skill check are you proposing to take 20 on? Since there's no DC for this, I'm just going to assign it a probability and make a roll.
Lugert tosses the grappling hook onto the cliff. It makes a lot of noise but falls back down, failing to catch on anything substantial. Dirt, rocks, and decaying animal bones rain down on you.
1d10 ⇒ 1
Don't forget your potion of levitaaaaaaaaaaaaaaate.
GM Wicked |
Normally I'd say forget the roll and just RP it, but that is TOO funny, especially considering it was you who identified them!
Lugert, Half-orc Ranger |
I guess I can't take twenty. Using a grappling hook is actually an attack. I figure I can "take 20" anyway since I just "attack" until I got it hooked.
GM Wicked |
Taking 20 doesn't work with attack rolls, though. That would be nice!
Lugert, Half-orc Ranger |
Throwing a grappling hook requires a ranged attack roll, treating the hook as a thrown weapon with a range increment of 10 feet. Objects with ample places to catch the hook have an AC of 5.
So, let me do this correctly.
Grappling Hook - Additional Range Increment: 1d20 + 3 - 2 ⇒ (18) + 3 - 2 = 19
GM Wicked |
Almost! You can't see what you're "attacking," so it's got total concealment. Chance to "hit" reduced by 50%. (I did say this was not going to be easy).
total concealment (low loses): 1d100 ⇒ 10
Lugert tries again, but only drags down more debris.
S Perception: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (4) + 0 = 4
Lugert, Half-orc Ranger |
Lugert speaks softly after taking another round of dirt to the face. "Alright, we have no idea what's up there and I can't get a good grip with this hook."
He turns to Gôlgast. "If you use your levitate potion you could take the rope up with you and throw it down to us. I don't want to use my pitons. They'll make too much noise."
Lugert could go up first with his dark vision too. I'm alway down for taking a dragon to the face.
Kandor, servant of Desna |
Kandor speaks up: Before we move up, let's make sure everyone has the right equipment, knows what spells are available and has a basic tactic.
Lugert, you have the potion of invisibility, the magic sword and the Energy heart. Your task is to hit the dragon hard.
I have the wand of cure light wounds with 8 charges, one channel for 1d6 hitpoints healing, the bless spell, and the longstrider spell to give me range is self, thus only me more speed. I will stay at a range either throwing spears, or healing you guys.
Magwyn and Golgast, what do you have left?
While he talks Kandor grabs the CLW wand and uses it on himself healing to full health and leaving 8 charges
If someone else thinks he would be better of with some of the equipment, now is the time to mention it. Maybe Magwyn should have the hearth as he is probably going toe to toe with the dragon?
Gôlgast |
The little candle suddently goes on for Gôlgast
Cartoon light-bulbs don't seem right for a fantasy setting!
He then slaps his forhead with his palm.
"Hang on once!"
"We just found this Levitate potion!"
"Someone could use that go get to the top of that wall."
"And secure a rope so we can all get up there."
He then looks up at the opening above and frowns slightly.
"I actually can't see in the dark."
"Even though my mum could (bless her sword arm)."
"I could go up there with a torch or using a Dancing Lights spell."
"But light might alert anything up there before we could all go up."
"Lugert? Kandor? Either of able to see in the dark?
Gôlgast |
Normally I'd say forget the roll and just RP it, but that is TOO funny, especially considering it was you who identified them!
Gôlgast is no moron. But wise he is not.
I didn't want to be a glory hound either after your not-so-subtle hint.
The timing of a wisdom roll that bad was perfect, and funny, though!
