"I agree that you don't need two problems at once. You want to deal with the Mngwa first, that's fine. But it sounds like this druidess needs to be told who's in charge now."

"You need to make a decision. Whose land is this, anyway? If it's hers and you are just tenants, then you gotta follow her rules. Fine."

"But if you for mean this to be your land, you gotta take it from those that want to keep it from you. So what if she's a shepherd of the land? If you take over this place, that becomes your job. And who says she is acting in the interest of the 'land?' Maybe she just likes the way things are and doesn't like change. Or maybe she sees you as invaders and wants to drive you out. Maybe she's just crazy. Lots of lands have farmers and the land doesn't seem to mind. So what's the problem? Just because she's a druid don't assume she's automatically some selfless martyr on behalf of the land. I'm a druid, but I still look out for number one."

"I wasn't there, but it sounds like she didn't come to your farmers to tell them to stop what they were doing; she just killed them. Don't just assume that she was in the right. There are plenty of evil druids."

The farmers grumble at Ehiz' outburst in opposition to Sulan's. A beefy half-orc backing you up is great, but a priest of the god who rules your job rebuking you is something else. Especially when that priest has saved the lives of people you know.

Simon grumbles. "We didn't ask for any of this, Mr. Bor'Dari." he says. "No matter what happened here, us and our kin didn't ask to sail over the sea only to be torn limb from limb by an angry pack of wolves led by some woman who thinks our land is hers."

Some of the younger farmers mumble between each other, and one, named Nathaniel, approaches Ehiz and Simon. He speaks in a conspiratorial tone, leaning in to Ehiz. "Listen, I think I know what happened. When the Point Man first got here, it was pretty dangerous. There were lots of beasts, and the Blades protected us." One of the other farmers nods, and adds, "About a week before the shipwrecks, they went out on a hunt, and the creature appeared the next night and attacked the loggers."

Nathaniel nods vigorously and shrugs. "He must have killed something he shouldn't have."

Simon spits and says, "Bah!" He crosses his arms and inflates his chest. "What does that have to do with the druidess and the farms? She isn't some spectral vengeance machine. She is a person, and she killed our friends. Where's the mngwa for us?"

Ehiz tries to keep himself from rolling his eyes up at the sky when Simon speaks. The man had lost friends and his anger was most understandable, but when the roof of your house is on fire, there's obviously a number one priority. "We talked to the druidess and she should be leaving us alone for now. That gives us valuable time to deal with this spectral beast. Let us deal with one fire at a time lest we burn both hands at once."

He then turns to face Nathaniel and nods solemnly. "Thank you for your honesty. Let us hope that the Blades will be as honest. This spectral beast won't stop until we right whatever was wronged and like all of you, I am so tired of blood and suffering. May the Father watch over all of us" concludes Ehiz before taking in whatever final things the farmers have to say, ready to turn around and share the grave news about the Blades' possible involvement with his companions.

More blood would definitely be shed in the coming days and the thought of it made the priest's stomach turn around.

Mogwai spends the early morning in prayer and meditation, thinking of what Murob told them of the Mngwas. A name similar to his own, but of a very different essence. While the others were interested in dealing with the spirit, it was unclear what the proper approach was. It couldn't be killed, or reasoned with. It wouldn't stop. And depending on what transgression had been committed, it may not even be able to atone for it. And even if one could, how would the creature know?

The puzzle eludes Mogwai for much of the morning, despite his prayers for guidance, until finally, something clicks. Mogwai rushes around the camp, searching for Murob, and eventually finding her. "Mogwai have thought about Mngwas. After find out what happened, Mogwai have idea."

As they talk with the farmers and other colonists, she watches Sulan with concern as he voices his rather direct proposals for dealing with the current challenges. She supposes that it should not surprise her that he would favour the straightforward approach of taking what you need and killing whatever stands in your path. She is also concerned about how many of the colonists agree with him, although she supposes that having their companions brutally killed has put them in a sour mood. She is still hoping to find a peaceful resolution to the conflict with the druidess, but Sulan's comment about evil druids nags at her for the rest of the evening.

In the morning, she is just finishing her meditation when Mogwai rushes up to her. As the goblin speaks, she watches him hopefully. "You do? That's fantastic! I've been thinking about this all night and without more information I could not come to a conclusion. Please share your thoughts."

Feeling excited, Mogwai starts to speak quickly, half his words lapsing into goblin, before he stops himself and slows down, trying again, starting with what they already know. "Mngwa spirit, not be killed. Will be reborn. But also spirit that Murob say cannot be talk to. Is Revenge Spirit." Mogwai pauses here to draw a circle in the sand around them with his claws, as though such a thing might protect them, before finally getting to his point. "But Murob say that spirit is also made by other spirits. Mngwa Spirit-Weapon. We talk those spirits, they put weapon away."

With Bredaric in the morning

Sorala nods, sincere. "Good luck with the hunt." She briefly considers going to tell the others, and then decides against it. Two problems, if they were lucky, could be solved with a fight between the druid and Bredaric.

With Karzok

"He's a poisoner? Good to know. And good idea. Don't fight him fair."

Later

Later in the day, Sorala finds the others. "It was the Blades. They did... something."

She hesitates for a moment, sure the next thing she was going to say wouldn't be well received. But then, she didn't need everyone on board. Just one or two would do the trick.

"Only a few Blades are at their ship now. I'd like to search Bredaric's room for some sign of what happened. But, I'll need a distraction. Would anyone like to raise a ruckus?"

I think Mogwai's idea is a good one, but Sorala isn't there for that conversation.

Sulan wakes up in the morning, somewhat surprised that the Mngwa didn't attack the settlement in the night.

Maybe the Mngwa only has issues with people out in the woods, and doesn't care what happens in this camp?

"So what's the plan today?" he says as he approaches the others.

Sulan has no particular plans for the next day and if nobody has any demands on his time he will forage for food, taking 10 for a 21 survival. If we aren't doing anything in particular today maybe he could do it twice (since each check is 4 hours).

Yosiah emerges from his tent, still looking a bit green around the gills. He'd spent the past short while writhing and groaning in his bedroll, fighting the urge to purge the contents of his stomach in one way or another.

He reconvenes with the others as Mogwai is drawing his circles in the sand, listening to the idea with careful consideration. "Mogwai, you are a good, kind man. You consider...diplomatie, even when it is not easy. For this, you are a better man than I am. "Alright. If you find any berries, do bring them to me if you can? I can bless them so that they may grant us more nourishment. A cupped hand full of berries should suffice. My plan for the day was to go about helping people and actively dig for more information on what exactly the Blades did to awaken this mngwa spirit."

@Leinathan: is it possible to use diplomacy to 'gather information' as to what happened when the Blades went out and did whatever caused the mngwa to come into being? Okay, why am I asking, Ehiz will go out and about talking to people to find out more about what happened.

The colony of First Landing was already the victim of clique-inazation and Ehiz knows this. With too few means to meet the needs of every colonist, the people of First Landing had fallen prone to the lure of division. Starting with the common folk first, those without the gift to channel divinity like the priestess or the training to engage and survive an engagement like the Blades, Ehiz intents to spend his morning sketching out the borders of his canvas with talks to the 'small folk' before moving in onto specific cliques, namely members of the Blades, family and friends of the fallen farmers, and the priestess.

Ehiz goes out into the town to talk to people about the first few weeks of their time here, trying to get some idea of what happened. Unfortunately, without talking to one of the actual Blades there's no way to get an exact idea of what happened, but Ehiz gets something like a basic timeline over his time interviewing.

Approximate Timeline:
~2 months ago - the Point Man and its crew of 40 people arrives. The loggers fell some nearby trees and start building a few log cabins to live in. The farmers head out to the designated farmland. The loggers begin to clear the land near the farmland.

~1 month ago - The farms and logging lodge are completed. Construction work on homes begins. There is an attack by wild animals on the loggers, and Breddaric head out to take care of it.

~3 weeks ago - The wild animal threat is curbed. Work resumes.

~2 weeks ago - The mngwa awakens and kills several loggers, forcing them to abandon the logging lodge. Breddaric attempts to drive it away, but fails and loses two Blades in the process. The lodge is abandoned.

~12 days ago - The mngwa attacks the town. Breddaric kills it.

~10 days ago - A savage druidess attacks the farm, killing several farmers and forcing the farm to be abandoned.

~1 week ago - The druidess attacks the settlement. Breddaric and his Blades drive her and her wolves away successfully.

~5 days ago - The storm and shipwreck. Survivors begin to stagger into the makeshift town.

Sulan heads out into the forest to hunt and forage for some food. His skill at hunting allows him to secure enough to feed four people for a day.

Yosiah/Mogwai/Murob, what are you doing?

Sulan returns with a variety of small game he has caught in the woods. He keeps enough for himself and then brings the rest to the first cookfire he sees, dropping the game unceremoniously off with whatever colonists happen to be there.

He then spends some time eating and if nobody seems to need him for anything he wanders out onto the forest again.

Sulan is not interested in any organized distribution scheme for food. Others can handle that. I'm not sure what people are doing in the afternoon, but since each survival check takes 4 hours, if there are no plans Sulan will do more foraging in the afternoon. I'll take 10 again for a 21 Survival.

Ehiz carves the details into the pillars of his mind. Logging lodge completed, logging starts, animal attacks start, Breddaric and go get involved, mngwa spawns. Only then does the druidess get involved.

The next two days are spent by being helpful wherever he can be: from using his divine magicks and powers to help and assist people to joining foraging parties to gather fruits, berries, and roots so that the people can eat. Last, but not least, the information he has gathered is shared with his companions. What to do about the mngwa situation and, perhaps more pertinently, about Breddaric's Blades role in the creation of it.

The next couple of days pass by un-eventfully for the most part. The burgeoning settlement needs a lot of support and leadership to make it through this beginning part, and with Breddaric out hunting the group is able to take center stage. Yosiah and Ehiz organize foraging and logging groups to the edge of the forest, felling and stripping a few trees for tools and shelter and gathering a trove of berries, roots, tubers, small game, and other foodstuffs. With that and the goodberries of Sulan and Ehiz, the group is able to make up the difference between the food production by Banker Rossi and the number of people there are, allowing for everyone to be fed.

Meanwhile, Murob and Sulan venture out further into the forest, as does Mogwai. Mogwai is off on some... other errand. Murob and Sulan are able to map the terrain to a radius of a few miles around the settlement, and are able to find quite a bit of food, even snagging an elk one time.

People begin to come to the group to ask them for one thing or another. Somebody slipped and fell, and need Ehiz to soothe their sprained ankle. Somebody ate a poisonous flower and needs Murob to help their stomachache. Somebody got chased up a tree by a boar and needs Sulan to kill it. Somebody wants to talk to Yosiah about his country and the land they've landed in.

On the 21st, Sorala slinks off. "I'm going to get some more information," she says. About half an hour later, there is a commotion over by the docked ship. There is shouting, and the clash of weapons. By the time anyone who goes to investigate gets there, they find Sorala and three Blades in front of the ship. The Blades clutch clubs, and Sorala has been beaten with them. She lies on the ground. The Blades scoff and pull her onto the ship.

Also on the 21st, in the early morning, the logging team near the edge of the village notices something: Shouting, coming from deeper in the forest. As you stand and watch, the shouting coalesces into a lone man: One of the Blades, bloodied but alive and healthy, running towards the settlement. He is panting and obviously exhausted.

"Help me!" he shouts.

Something tells the farmer priest that it will be him and his companions who will have to venture forth into the woods today, with a raging druidess about, to undo the so many wrongs one foolish leader and his company of blades have managed to achieve in so little time.

At the ship

Murob takes a step forward, palms up in a placating gesture. "I'm sure it is all a misunderstanding. Sorala is a honourable person and she would have no reason to do such a thing. I think many in this camp can vouch for her, even among your own men. Why, only a few days ago she was sparring with your leader and exchanging friendly banter. Besides, we need every able body if we are to survive. Or have you forgotten all the perils and hardships that surround us? Release Sorala into our care, so that I may look after her injuries." She gives their clubs a disapproving glance at that last.

Yosiah mutters under his breath, swearing in his native language. "What were you doing in the woods, and why were you wounded? Is Breddaric still out there?" The woodsman glances at his farmer companion, tending to the Blade's wounds. "Friend, I think you know as well as I that these people are not receptive to the teachings of Erastil, just as they have no use for the lessons taught by Kofusachi. They are men living by the teachings and laws of men, which leads to troubles such as these. Make sure he is cared after, and I will fetch Murob and the others."

Yosiah departed the clearing, heading into town to collect Murob, Mogwai, and Sorala.

"Who's Kofusachi?" Sulan says, looking confused.

"Yeah, you go ahead, I'll watch this guy."

Yosiah is unable to find Mogwai, but he finds Murob and Sorala at the center of a small conflict on the other edge of town, near the water. Sorala, three Blades, and Murob stand at the center of a small crowd of about fifteen settlers. The Blades have Sorala halfway up the gangplank to the ship, and Murob is arguing with them about her fate.

The Blade sighs. "Sorry, Greenskin. It ain't that easy. We can't just let her go, not after she slighted us," he says, gruffly. "Don't worry, we ain't gonna kill her. Just teach her a lesson."

The Blade with Sulan and Ehiz and the small logging team sits on the ground, cross-legged. "Sorry, did I not explain already?" he clears his throat and contines. "We went out there to kill that druid so we could take the farm back. I'm injured because we fought her and her wolves, and one of them bit me. Then, when we were resting in the farmhouses during the night, the cat that's been hunting us came. It attacked us, killed one of my friends, and I ran away."

He doesn't look too injured. He's taken a non-lethal would and he seems exhausted and probably hungry from his long night and subsequent flight. A couple days' rest will see him recovered.

The farmer priest closes his eyes and hums an ancient prayer to Erastil. This causes a soft blue glow to wash over his hands and, with the simplest of touches, he bathes the injured Blade in a healing light.

"I see" he answered in a belated manner, continuing on as if he hadn't taken a moment to call upon the Divine to heal the man. "Did you succeed in your plan? Did you kill the druidess?"

The Blade grunts in appreciation at Ehiz' healing, and he nods with a grin. "Hell yeah, we did. You can tell the farmers they can go back to doing what they do best."

While the news should've granted Ehiz a sort of happiness and hope, it only managed to make him sad. How much more suffering did they need go through and inflict? "I see. We best hope the spirits of the land won't turn her spirit against us as well. I'm not sure how much we can do to help your fellow Blades: is Breddaric's company still intact and together?"

Yosiah sighs, shoulders slumping at the news of the murdered Druidess. "This is bad news, friend. I am concerned that this Mngwa will demand retribution for your actions. I am as curious as Ehiz about the whereabouts of Breddaric and the others..."

He shrugs before answering Ehiz' question. "Let's go see my friends and find out. Maybe we can go check out the farm again tomorrow, if they're willing."

"On the other hand, if the Druidess and the man-ing-ooah were not connected, then it shouldn't make any difference. Nature does not concern itself with individuals. Even us druids are entirely expendable. There is always another living creature available to fill the void."

"Regardless of all that, I see it as vital that we find out the whereabouts of Breddaric and his Blades. The tree of our community is feeble as is and it can't stand losing more branches."

While it might be dangerous, going out and securing a safe return for Breddaric and the Blades (or that which remains of them) seems like a sensible next step to me.

And if he's still alive, it might also take him down a peg if we have to 'save his bacon!' :)

"No, Sulan, I fear you have misunderstood me. The Mngwa is a creature born of vengeance. I do not believe it related to the now-dead Druidess. I believe, as Lares come to bless homes, this Mngwa comes to exact its revenge. Breddaric and his Blades must face it. They must die or kill it. It is the law of nature."

What? Half-Elf Writer 1 / Dancer 1 / Chemist 1

Well actually, the mngwa can't be killed. You either die or you fix what you did wrong.

So, you want to go out to the farm and find Breddaric? Is anyone staying behind to deal with Sorala?

On one hand, going to see if Breddaric is still alive will give us the info we need to call the shot on pulling the trigger vs Sorala's captives (if he's dead, they lack the backing to withstand us - right? right). On the other hand, she might be killed if we don't step in right away. I'm torn.

The Blades holding Sorala said they won't kill her, only teach her a lesson. To recap, Ehiz is with Sulan and the Blade who was fleeing, while Murob is at the docks with Yosiah, correct?

What? Half-Elf Writer 1 / Dancer 1 / Chemist 1

Correct, Murob.

What? Half-Elf Writer 1 / Dancer 1 / Chemist 1

So! What are y'all doing? Do Ehiz/Sulan want to head out into the forest to see if Breddaric is alive?

Do Yosiah/Murob want to do anything about Sorala's situation, or just see what happens?
