When you hear fire warning you notice a flame off the Sarboard bow side of the ship but at a distance in the fog about 2 miles or so out. As quick as you saw the flame, it disappears.
With the alarm sailors rush topside, uncertain of what needs to be done. The captain is quickly on deck as well, still buttoning his faded jacket with his dueling gloves, as he moves to see the cause of this alarm.
Marcus Nightsky |
Rest assured good captain, there was a flame that appeared briefly in the distance Continuing to scan off the starboard bow.
Was there any noise that accompanied the flame?
Captain Colthyn Riggs |
No noise.
He takes a good long look out of his spyglass and shakes his head, "Aye, it's not there now. Blasted fog. We can keep a look out." He starts to bark orders for the crew. "Let's keep a full crew up top for bit, everyone else back tot the bunks...don't need everyone tired in the morning." He paces the length of the ship, his spy glass in hand, he stops every couple feet to peer into the fog.
"So Marcus, what did you see?"

Revhi: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12
Dinetta: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (17) + 11 = 28
roughly 20 minutes later you see something. You can't make out details at this range but you do notice the outline of a ship sitting high above the waterline, unmoving in the mist. It is as if it ran aground.
Marcus Nightsky |
All I saw captain was a brief flare up, kind of like a cannon firing. Thankfully there was no noise nor cannonball headed our way
Dinetta Cillara |
Dinetta, who had been standing near the rail after the other sailors were sent back to their bunks, suddenly points at something in the distance.
Captain. There. It looks like a ship, but . . . it is above the water as though stranded on rocks.
Dinetta Cillara |
Dinetta points to where she saw the ghost ship.
Out there. Quite some distance. I could barely make it out in the fog. Looked like it was floating about the water. As I said, like it was a ship stranded on rocks or something.
Dinetta will relate a distance if she could estimate one.
Captain Colthyn Riggs |

+4 assistance from PCs
With both Dinetta and Jean assistance the Captain focuses, "I'll be damned. He assesses the situation, “A ship on rocks...looks like fork or something. Hmmm… there may be survivors aboard. We should investigate. This is not part of the usual duty, men, so I’ll take volunteers. The volunteers will split any salvage we find. I’ll lead the party personally."
He pauses, “I’ll not lie. This could be dangerous. Who knows what you’ll find aboard a wrecked ship here in the Razor? Mister Handerly, you’ll have command while I’m gone. So, who will join me, lads?”
The sailors look down at their shoes.
Marcus Nightsky |
We were hired to protect you and yours, so I will come as well captain
Jean-Phillipe Poulain |
Poulain moves forward. "Oui, oui. Shut the f*&$ up now. Heads on a swivel."+2 to stealth, perception, survival, and initiative for all.
Davkas Gellantara |
Davkas has Chatterbeak do a flyover of the ghost ship.
Simply fly over and return to me
When the captain calls for volunteers, the wizard steps forward.
I'm with you, Sir
He has his wand of Vanish in hand
Captain Colthyn Riggs |
"Alright then...make ready for 10 degrees starboard and into the mist. Leadman keep the sounding going." the captain walks back to the wheel and takes possession from the First Mate. "First we get a bit closer, prepare the port side jolly, get us 10 skins of water, and make sure there's an extra oar, two floats and coil of silk rope." he barks out his orders.
Marcus Nightsky |
Marcus grabs his pack and weapons and makes ready by the jolly boat, keeping his eyes on the grounded ship.
One would imagine it being pretty easy to run aground in this pea soup
Davkas Gellantara |

SPECIAL ABILITIES
--------------------
Alertness (Ex): While a familiar is within arm's reach, the master gains the Alertness feat.
Improved Evasion (Ex): When subjected to an attack that normally allows a Reflex saving throw for half damage, a familiar takes no damage if it makes a successful saving throw and half damage even if the saving throw fails.
Share Spells: The wizard may cast a spell with a target of “You” on his familiar (as a touch spell) instead of on himself. A wizard may cast spells on his familiar even if the spells do not normally affect creatures of the familiar's type (magical beast).
Empathic Link (Su): The master has an empathic link with his familiar to a 1 mile distance. The master can communicate empathically with the familiar, but cannot see through its eyes. Because of the link's limited nature, only general emotions can be shared. The master has the same connection to an item or place that his familiar does.
Deliver Touch Spells (Su): If the master is 3rd level or higher, a familiar can deliver touch spells for him. If the master and the familiar are in contact at the time the master casts a touch spell, he can designate his familiar as the “toucher.” The familiar can then deliver the touch spell just as the master would. As usual, if the master casts another spell before the touch is delivered, the touch spell dissipates.
Speak with Master (Ex): If the master is 5th level or higher, a familiar and the master can communicate verbally as if they were using a common language. Other creatures do not understand the communication without magical help.
As a Raven, Chatterbeak speaks common. His link with Davkas is empathic. Davkas can sense him up to a mile and feel what Chatterbeak feels but cannot see through his eyes or impart any telepathic commands. Chatterbeak has an INT of 8.
If a familiar is dismissed, lost, or dies, it can be replaced 1 week later through a specialized ritual that costs 200 gp per wizard level. The ritual takes 8 hours to complete.

Davkas sends Chatterbeak off on a scouting missing into the deep thick sea fog. The salt wafts up to Chatterbeaks nostrils. He flutters his little wings as he flies towards the shape on the horizon.
how high is he flying?
Davkas Gellantara |
He would be 20ft up but if the vision is as bad as you say, he would likely return saying he is scared and cannot see far enough for a fly over to work. Generally Familiars are run by the player but the familiars SRD page does state my are essentially a cohort with a helpful attitude, but not suicidal. Up to you if tou want me to control him or you can. Let me know

*What is your light source and where is it located?
Everyone but Dravkas (if you have the ability to see beyond 15 feet) see two dark masses approaching the jolly. It sounds like jumping fish or skimming the surface. One from the port side the other from the starboard side. You are about a half mile away from a rocky structure that appears to be spearing the ship you previously noticed.
Marcus Nightsky |
I got something large coming in on the starboard side
Marcus will delay until he can positively identify the threat
Unless other measures were taken, I would guess that a lantern would be mounted up front on a pole?
Dinetta Cillara |
Dinetta peers into the misty darkness.
I cannot see much past the end of my nose. If anyone has some light it would be beneficial.
Her rapier has suddenly appeared in her hand, you are not sure from where.
Captain Colthyn Riggs |
"Steady...hold steady. Not sure what we are rowing into right now. could just be a school of flying mackerels or razor's jumpers." There is long pause. "But we ready." He maintains the direction. "Markus pull on those oars harder will ya, lets not be out her any long then necessary."
Figured Markus would be be rowing.
Marcus Nightsky |
Marcus seems content with the captains description of the "black blob" and rows onward.
Revhi |
I didn't think light would be a big issue on a naval campaign. Do we have torches around?
Revhi squints her eyes and waits. Not much to do but see what's coming.
Remember that Davkas can roll twice and take the better result for initiative (unless somebody gets seriously injured in the surprise round, in which case Revhi will do so).

Dinetta Cillara |
Unsure what to expect, Dinetta stays with her rapier in hand waiting for whatever may come.
Be careful. Whatever they are, I doubt they are friendly.
Ready action to attack if/when something comes into range.
baldwin the merciful |
A few diminutive fish jump and land in the boat their teeth filled mouths hunger for a meal. You are able to avoid any damage but the jolly is surrounded by the swarm of fish that you recognize as piranha. Jean fires an arrow harmlessly into the swarm.
A swarm composed of Fine or Diminutive creatures is immune to all weapon damage.
Captain Colthyn Riggs |
The first swarm surrounds the boat, the Captain sees Jean fire his bow into the mass without causing any damage. He looks to Dinetta and then over to Davkas, "Well... if you've got something now's the time to use it." he then reaches into his satchel and pulls out a hunk of dried meat and tosses it behind the jolly trying to lure at least one swarm away from the boat. "I wouldn't be standing up...if I were you."
Acro DC 10 to keep balance if you are standing up.
Marcus Nightsky |
Is there only one set of oars?
Upon seeing the nasty little beasties, Marcus begins rowing really hard.
I thought these bastards were only in rivers
