Baldwin the Merciful's: Razor Coast (Inactive)

Game Master baldwin the merciful

The Razor Coast has drawn men to madness and slaughter since the world was young. Tulita natives, born from the same fire as this jagged coast, claim the Razor existed long before the world’s other lands. It is a crucible of flame cooled by the ocean’s caress and its mountains, reefs, and lightless depths teem with as many terrors as lustrous spoils. The Razor bucks the trappings of civilization in much the same manner the storm-tossed sea spurns the men who dare mount her. This is no place for the weak-willed. Untested souls are food for its storms, its fickle gods, its ancient spirits, and the evil predations of unfathomable creatures. No less dangerous are the men who make the coast their home and whose dark desires put most horrors to shame.

This is Valjoen_KC's offering. This alias was used for another submission that I didn't end up playing. I'm still working on a backstory and tweaking him, but will give you a sense of the direction I'm taking. He's a pretty straight forward two-handed weapon, front-line fighter with focus on his orc ferocity and weapon sundering. Still playing around with his gear and magic.

The stat block is updated in his profile.

Thanks for letting me know. Well that means Fast swimmer is online.

Question for you boss. Any issues with the Freebooter archetype and Gnome alt traits? If so I can happily rebuild.

Freebooter is fine and the race traits are fine.

I haven't looked at the character yet.

Benbow:

Just confirm for me you understand the posting rate that we maintain and that is ok with you. What is you most active game that your in?

Ptahh, (Valjoen_KC):

Just confirm for me that you understand the posting rate that we maintain and that is ok with you.

Khair bin Jharif (Chad Newman):
I haven't looked at the character in detail yet. You mentioned wanting a fast paced game, but I need you to confirm that you understand the pace of the game we keep.

baldwin the merciful wrote:

** spoiler omitted **

Thanks.

Benbow is still under construction but everything that is there is correct as far as I can tell. Just wanted to know if there were issues so I could rebuild. This looks to be a fun game and I would hate to disqualify myself.

Reggie Two-Fist (Edward Sobel):

I haven't looked at your character in detail yet. However, I see you're in 30 games already. I'm concerned that the you won't be able to keep up with the pace on this game and your other games. I need you to think about what the requirements are and confirm that you'd be able to keep pace. We normally post 40+ times a day and often can get to 75 or more in a day. It can be overwhelming especially if you miss a day.

HP's

Character incoming.

A duelist.

GM baldwin:

of those games...
5 I no longer am in. but the GM has not moved me to inactive
1 of those games (king's Patron) is actually 4 of those threads (all the same game as we move from thread to thread as the objectives change.)

several of those games are rather slow paced, on game is only one update a week

Lost lands game is like King's patron.. it consist of two threads for the same game. one is the common thread for the GM's other games and one is the game I am in.

and 1 possibly 2 games I plan on dropping once I let the GM know. they just are not to my liking.

also many of those games are slow paced. (posts are about every two days or so.)

I have been in fast paced games, and even missing a day can be tedious. but as long as the players on the GM are good and can work through stuff it doesn't become a problem for me. (this does NOT mean Retcon, simply knowing a little about the character and make some basic assumptions to keep things moving.

I gm 1 game and that game has slowed to the point I am close to shutting it down as the last two initial players seldom post.

despite all of this, I understand you concern and it may weigh heavily on your decision but is you do not choose Reggie. that is also fine. I will follow a bit.

I would even suggest taking a peek at the gameplay thread and seeing how many posts we go through in a day.

Reggie Two-Fist (Edward Sobel):
Thanks for the update. It's good to know about the multiple threads with one game.

Oh and definitely a good idea to keep recruitment comments in PM.

Embrianna wrote:

doing so now.. and btw Hello Joy, nice to see you around the boards again. I do still mention our old games from time-to-time.

I see Tierce is still around as well, shame he never said hello or anything, oh well.

baldwin the merciful wrote:

Definitely. As long as there is an understanding that I am far less likely to post in the late evenings I am in favor of the posting rate.

Tierce was around briefly and attempted to run another game I was in, but he had to bow out and end the game due to some health issues he was having. :(

This is Bane88's submission.

Background.:
A dashing stranger approaches the campfire. "Evening ladies and gentlemen." he says with a flourish and bow. "I'm a Humble traveller, by the name of Tom." Tom is friendly and spends the night cheering your group up with tall tales, he hits on your girlfriend, but you don't care, he's harmless. In the morning you wake up, your stuff is gone and your girlfriend looks satisfied. A note on your boot(the only one remaining) "Thanks for the hospitality" its signed, The legendary Thomas, Honest Purveyor of Friendship."

Tom Walked down the coast in his new boot, whistling happily. Life was good. Suckers and pretty girls were plentiful. He had a full belly and spent the night in good company. A decent improvement from the night before when he had caught a beating cheating at cards in the tavern last town back. Oh well.

One day at a time, that was his motto. That and live, love, and don't get played. Also Vices are Virtues. He walked for a good half an hour pondering at how he had so many personal mottos, perhaps that's why his life was always so random. Whatever, morals were for suckers and poor people. But also heroes, hmm. Heroes got girls, maybe there was something to this morality game.

Tom grew hungry, all this thinking was tiring him out. He took a ration from his pack that he had "acquired" that morning. Thinking was for people who had free time, he was on his way to the top.

GM Baldwin:
I've read a few pages and like the pace. I'm typically able to post 3-4 times throughout the day, then again late evening. Weekends is a little more suspect for me with RL, but I think I could contribute more than adequately.

Is this still recruiting? If so, I would like to submit Alynthar, the Chaotic Good Necromancer. I would also like to offer a bribe.

We are looking for a front-liner melee-type, but if you tell me what you're offering you're bribing the right person. ;)

Really though, while my own character would not care, I can tell you two of our party members are quite against undead, and we are looking for a melee character.

I must admit I'm interested in how one makes a chaotic good necromancer though. I'm assuming the undead are "for the greater good when properly harnessed"?

I had a similar idea for a non-evil necromancer. Too bad a good necromancer is both unfeasible and impossible. Good Clerics can't cast evil spells.

"Chaotic, Evil, Good, and Lawful Spells A cleric can't cast spells of an alignment opposed to her own or her deity's (if she has one). Spells associated with particular alignments are indicated by the chaotic, evil, good, and lawful descriptors in their spell descriptions."

-pfsrd

And unfeasible because you can't heal them with negative energy. Good Clerics can't channel negative or spontaneously cast inflict.

You could, however, have a damn good tanky undead following you around. So there is that. And though I am a good cleric I don't think Quell is directly opposed to undead.

A good cleric may have that rule. Wizards have no such limitation. And to answer Astrianna's question, it's more of a "undead are mindless tools, and therefore can be used for either good or evil" situation. If you're interested, I have a forum on the topic.

As for the role, I am also fond of maguses (magi?), so would be willing to suggest my magus, Orimminar, who's stats I will find tomorrow.

looking to come up with a more detailed back story.

my question is, where is Port Shaw located? is it in the same world as the rest of Pathfinder?

is it its own setting?

Under my Campaign Information Tab there is a spoiler, "Important Link to Rules" which covers the use of certain types of spells by neutral or good characters. It's a compiled link to discussions where the designers of the game have weighed in on the topic. It is safe to say that you and I would disagree on this issue. I don't need to rehash the issue on this re-recruitment thread either.

Honest Tom (Bane88):

I haven't reviewed your character yet, but I need you to confirm that you understand that the pace of this game is typically 40+ posts a day. We often have 75 or more posts and that you can keep up. It can be overwhelming at times, especially if you miss a day. This game's pace and consistency is unlike 99% of the game on the the PBP boards.

Updated gear, wrote background and made a few tweaks. Everything is reflected in my profile.

For those who have applied how much, if anything, do you know about the Razor Coast Setting and material?

Khair bin Jharif wrote:

Well, not the best, but it could have been much worse.

I submit Khair bin Jharif for consideration. Stats, description, and a short backstory can be found in my profile for the character. While I am used to playing characters that are a little more skill based, I thought a beefy meat shield/damage sponge might compliment this group the best.

Khair:

double check your constitution ability. I see you gave the 4th and 8th level stat bonus there. Your 7th level. The NPC level does not count towards when ability stat bonuses apply.

Quote:
The base begins: 1 level of either aristocrat, expert or warrior. Consider this your pre-adventuring life. This is a way to give players a small HD, skill, and save bonus. It does not count towards feat or when ability stat bonuses apply. It's simply giving a little character boost showing that you had a life before focusing your attention on your adventuring class.

I haven't ever played or read much about the setting. I know it was made by Frog God Games and is pirate/seafaring based. I've started to what I can find on the internet that doesn't contain spoilers.

My background was based on Golarion since I didn't know names of places in this setting. Obviously, I'll change/update those elements as I become knowledgeable.

Thanks.

I'll fill in some details that a player will need to know. Most of the players began in Westcrown or that vicinity. I did not want applicants having to purchase campaign specific material.

Our Razor Coast takes place in Golarion. Map of Razor Coast in Relation to Golarion

Ok. That's cool. Makes it easier.

Thanks astri, i asked that earlier

Very little, I have the freebooters guide but have yet to really dig into it.

Hitpoints: 6d10 ⇒ (9, 10, 2, 7, 4, 8) = 40. Not to shabby.

baldwin the merciful wrote:

I uave the book but never really dug into it.

Got it for an application a long time ago but did not get in, so ijust shelved the book till now.

OOoooooo I just found some cheese.

Fey Magic, Gnome Alt racial, Grants a level one druid spell as a once a day SLA.

Recharge Innate Magic is a level one druid spell which refreshes ALL race based SLAs.

Gnome Magic grants Speak with Animals as a once a day SLA.

This combo grants at will Speak with animals.

{break down. 1. Use Speak. 2. Use Regharge to refresh all racial SLAs including itself. 3. Use speak.}

The Gnome/Fey combo also allows at will Guidance. Is this cheese? It looks like a good way to make Benbow more magical and is nicely synergistic with the normally forgotten Wild Empathy ability.

So cheese, allowable cheese or.....

Oh dear Recharge Innate appears to be from the ARG.

All I can say is AaaaaaRrrrrrrrGggggggg!

Note: In the off chance this is allowed, because I really like the idea, Benbow would have the following spell-likes at will at CL7: Dancing lights, Ghost sound, Prestidigitation, Speak with animals, Recharge Innate magic, Guidance, Create Water, and Stabilize. Recharge innate magic, Guidance, Create water and Stabilize can only be used if Benbow in in a specific favored terrain. Terrain will likely be Forest or Jungle depending on how common each terrain is.

Benbow - I'm trying to limit items out of the ARG. That is something we can address if selected but I don't see RI as an issue.

After 9 months of adventuring speaking with animals isn't really the party concern, getting savagely mulled by Karikanti/gatorman is a much greater problem.

He might have been able to talk the real gators out of eating us.

I understand the pace and thankfully have a job that allows me much time for posting during the week.

Continuing to tweak a bit as I work out feat progressions... I've switched a couple feats and a little gear. Updated in the profile.

Ok, hopefully I can get things done on time.

My plan is an Aristocrat/1; Monk(Martial Artist)/2; Fighter(Lore Warden)/5 - decent damage with 18 Str and Power Attack, but focus is on combat maneuvers - Trip, Bull Rush, Grapple, Ki Throw, Step Up. Pretty much his goal is to get in the way of the bad guys and make their lives miserable, until such time as the rest of the party manages to wipe out the guy.

Don't have any Greater feats yet, but those start next level to allow the rogue to get more pokey pokey in when my trips cause AoO.

Hope this makes sense. I build the character on PC Gen this afternoon, will have to get it transferred for the online character (which will not take too long with all the feats and traits chosen.)

Background - He is the moderately lazy son of a Taldan noble. He was sent to school to become a great mage, but got thrown out after learning the basics. Figuring that he needed some structure, his father enrolled (in the broadest meaning of the term) in a Irori monetary where he learned a fair amount about fighting, but not much about religion or discipline. After flunking out of his second school, his father had him conscripted into the Taldan military. Being far smarter than most, he worked his way up, and managed to get himself assigned to a teaching detail close to Oppara. After several years of being bored out of his mind, and spending far too much time in the canteen, he was asked to find employment elsewhere. After annoying his father for a while, his father paid for passage to Port Shaw figuring that life in the rough and tumble city on the edge of civilization might teach the boy some discipline and fear, since obviously nothing else seemed to work.

Well, he has been in Port Shaw for nearly a year now. He earns a living working when he needs, but prefers lying on the beach. He has found that he can make a decent amount fighting in minor gladiator battles. He is usually far more skilled than those he is fighting, but since he does not need to be rich, he usually underplays his abilities and wins by just enough to make the fight interesting, and makes sure that he does not get hit in the face as he rather likes his nose on straight.

------
That is where I am at. Need to get some RL work done, and then will work on this later this evening.

Tirion:

I've been asking every applicant are you sure you can keep up with the 40+ posts a day we generate? We often hit 75+ when we get rolling. I see you are in 18 games right now, which one would you say is your quickest pace game?

Also, how familar, if at all, are you with the Razor Coast Material?

Baldwin the Merciful:

Right now none of them are going warp speed. The fastest by far was Doug M's Way of the Wicked - we managed to pull of 12,000 posts in 15 months. Unfortunately, the DM had to leave shortly after that, so we only made it to level 6. He came back and jumped us up to level 15, but the campaign has not had the same feel since then. My character in that campaign was Judge Tohram Quasangi, a lovable dhampir (turned vampire when we jumped up levels) summoner (changed to bard when we jumped up levels). The most posts I saw in that campaign was over 100 in a day and I know we were averaging close to 50/day for a while.

Currently my fastest campaign is TheDarknessRising Knot of Thorns, also a Way of the Wicked Campaign. I am playing Tkaara Fiakben, the lovable drug addicted heavens oracle (Addicted 3pp Curse). Since it restarted with a new DM in early March, we have gotten in about 450 posts, or 10 a day including weekends (which are usually slower).

I prefer the faster pace. The only thing that might limit my posting would be if/when I get a new job. Although I will still check an active game in the morning and always will be on in the evening. During the day would depend on what I was doing for work.

Regarding the number of games - Buried Secrets is moving at a snail's pace, same with CoCT (same DM), the Razor Coast is currently stalled due to the DM having a RL accident (we never actually got started), Elsir Vale is almost finished as we are working our way through the last outpost I believe, Blue Quartz has been terminated (DM did not switch it to inactive), Ruby Guesthouse is done (was a breakout from the Iobaria campaign), Trapped Beyond Time has not started (not sure if it will as we only have 2 players right now), and Wrath or the Righteous (last campaign) never got started before DM went AWOL.

So, I have several campaigns averaging 1-2 posts per day by most players, a pile that are inactive, or close to inactive. I don't leave campaigns (the two I did out of 50+ were because the DM left, returned, left again, returned again, and then became so inconsistent that I could not even remember my character's personality and quirks).

What I know about Razor Coast is a basic overview from the player's guide that was used to create my character for the other RC campaign (currently inactive). You have Port Shaw (build on a holy site of the Trulia), you have the Trulia (natives worshipping a number of demigod type deities - Whale, Fire, etc as I recall). You have another branch of the Trulia who worship similar, but different deities, but they live on islands well removed from Port Shaw and were not as effected by the invaders (settlers). Port Shaw is everything that a pirate port is suppose to be, guards maintaining basic control; lots of merchants, some honest, some not so; brothels; gladiator type fighting; farms and estates for the wealthy outside of the city proper (using Trulia slaves for labor); currently it is in a bit of a boom due to the mainland having a great demand for those things produced/found around Port Shaw.

That is my general understanding. Pretty much what is in the player's guide, although if you have chanced things, then my knowledge may be skewed.

FYI - I was also in your Shadows in Freeport campaign - Norjan was my character if you want to look at that posting. It was almost 3 years ago. I got in over 100 posts in the month + that you ran the campaign.

Sadly, if there's one week where every year I'm guaranteed to have to work 100+ hours, its the week before the 1st of May. I'm very regretfully going to have to withdraw from this recruitment, as I won't be able to put together the "A" submission this game deserves.

Good luck to all the applicants, and may you all not have to fight any more gatormen!

Tirion:

Thanks for response. I did notice the Knot of Thorns game, I read few pages of the posts.
