Baldwin the Merciful's - CoT Campaign (Inactive)

Game Master baldwin the merciful

This is Council of Thieves AP. Westcrown, City of Twilight, once was the center of Aroden's faith, but now it symbolizes despair. By day, the city remains a vibrant center of trade; but, by night only those with a death wish venture out.

I have two flasks of alchemist fire!

This sentence makes me happy. So does the Flame oracle. Increasing odds for fire to join the group.

Shinon wrote:
Not that my opinion matters to Baldwin's choice of options, but my vote is always for more fire. As it stands, we don't have a single fire-user in this entire group and it is making the pyromaniac in me sad. (Don't worry though, I plan to upgrade Shinon to a +1 flaming longbow as soon as possible)

I'll qualify for Fire Music at 5th level, which will allow me to sub in fire damage with all my bard spells. I'm planning on taking a fair bit of evocation spells with this character as well. :D

YES! So! Much! Fire! Now I'm actually pretty excited about this new member. But it's going to be even tougher for Baldwin to decide, now that he knows three of you have fire.

Burning hands available here as well as burning gaze.

Burning Gaze cast on a Raven Familiar= WIN!

This!

Duncan Redhammer wrote:

Fixed that for you. :)

Alright, now I'm fired up! Which of these fantastic flame warriors will our Evil DM pick?

FIRE! FIRE! Hopefully Andrea can make it to Flame Strike. Wow. So many posts while I was gone.

Unless there is a late submission the decision will be made shortly after 9:00.

I echo the Shinon's comment there have been excellent submissions.

Andrea1 wrote:

She should have been a druid. They get flame strike earlier. This is the sole reason I will generally choose druid over cleric for most of my divine casters (though I am still partial to oracles).

Oracle almost seems to be a better choice than Cleric. There is the less flexible aspect but they get a number of special abilities to help
them out. The cleric's channel ability, IMO is weaker than the 3.5 version. The healing is nice, but the anti-undead side is weaker and can't really be counted on to save one's bacon from the energy drainers.

Yeah, but you can spend a feat to get Turn Undead.

I do not like the changes in the undead....they have been whimp-a-fied.

I think they are a bit toughter. The turn resistance really blunts the PF Turn/Command undead.

Of course, they are all wimps compared to 1st edition undead. Vampires and Spectres had a 2 level PERMA-drain attack. I was scrambling to keep them away from me way back when.

This was an incredibly difficult decision. I appreciate everyone's interest but we only have one opening.

Orsino 'Orsin' Bessatte come over to the discussion thread.

I am considering adding another player, for a party of six, but have not made that decision yet.

Congrats Orsin! Good luck guys! Thanks for the opportunity to apply!

Welcome to the group! Hopefully everyone can keep up and we can make this the best and biggest thread on the boards.

Council of Thieves:

We are looking for an additional player for this EXCEPTIONALLY active fast paced game. We average 5 -8 posts each per day. Sometimes more. Since the end of May we have nearly 4000 post, roughly 40 - 70, posts per day. We are nearing the end of AP 1.

We have a good mix of experienced PbP and first timers, so it doesn't matter to me.

Currently the party has:

Inquistor
Cleric
Bard
Ranged Ranger
Shield Fighter

The Ranged Ranger and the Shield Fighter need to slow down some of their posting during the week, but will still be gaming. We are looking for someone who can post high quality and maintain the fast pace. Your character will be developed in this game. Developing the character's role is more important than the developing the maximum stats possible.

The party is looking for a roguish character and/or possibly an arcane spell caster with rogue skills. You would be entering at level 3.

Here are rules for the build:

20 Pt buy
No score below an 8 before racial adjustment.
Download the Free PG
2 traits, (1 must be a campaign trait)
No third party material
No Alchemist, Gunslinger or Summoner or their variants
Core races only, no thiefling characters. No ARG
Minimum 4-6 posting a day.
No evil
Good alignment work well with this group of hereos.
Adult themed, but well within Paizo's PBP standards. When in doubt put it behind a spoiler.

3000 GP (3rd lv) No more than 50% in one item. Run any magic weapon, gear, potions (don't bother spending coin on Cure potions they are plentiful), by me before purchase.

Note: I have developed many layers of additonal story and plot themes that veer off the published AP. If you are looking for a pure AP game this is probably not for you.

Answer the following:

1. Tell me 3-4 NPC's your character knows in the city, they will become important NPCs. Names, occupations and how you know them. I will incorporate NPC's into the game to help develop your character and the feel of the city.

2. How long have you been in the City.

3. Give a brief background for your character.

I want to make sure it's clear NO Advance Race Guide. The forbidden classes include their vairants/archetypes.

The only real house rule that I have incorporated into this PbP game is 1 on an attack has a chance to either fumble weapon or snap the ranged weapon string. You make a dex based check, add in modifier, and must get a 10 or higher to avoid the fumble.

This is a fast pace, fun game that is roughly 50/50 roll/role playing. There is plenty of combat, and I run some complex scenarios that test resources but this is not and hack n'slash. You must enjoy ROLE PLAYING. We are looking for quality posts and frequency. Keeping a 4-6 post a day count is normal. It is definately one of the more active games on the PbP boards.

I am the groups inquisitor.

This game is awesome and is fast paced to the point it's like a game played in real time.
DM forgot to mention his excellent use of Map tools. So combat is immersive. Good luck keepingup.

Party cleric here. Excellent roleplaying oppurtunties and plenty of drama, character interaction and plot hooks all over the place.

Andrea is a rather high strung cleric of Calistria who is focusing towards spellcasting duties on the divine side with a little scroll crafting. I also love to shop and have started up a cache at our hideout for people to paw through. :)

I really like the idea of this. I have not played through any of the APs and is only reason why I am hesitant. I made up a character. Read and thought through all the questions. I really like the idea of fast paced. Will think some more on this. Main question is if a rogue or wizard is more important? I made a rogue though could easily make a wizard.

As valuable as wizards can be, we've got a lot of spellcasting throughout the party as it is (two 3/4 casters and a full caster). I'm the newest member of the party, but I think a good classic rogue is something that would greatly benefit us as a group.

The Exchange

This looks like a fantastic opportunity! I'm currently active in five pbp's, but I believe that I could make rooms for a sixth, especially so since my others are one post everyday. What skills is the group currently lacking in, that could afford to be filled out? I like that there is a flanking partner already present in the group, does anyone focus on feints, intimidates or combat maneuvers? I'm trying to get a idea of the best way I could provide support for the group as a whole.

A little UMD can be useful for emergency spellcasting. In fact we should get a 'Emergency Cleric Repair Kit' up.

Helmet of Reading Magic and Understanding Languages
Scroll of Raise Dead
Scroll of Restoration
Potion of Cure Serious Wounds

Well, UMD is one of Orsin's specialties and read magic is one of his cantrips. :) A rogue with maxed out UMD would be quite an awesome addition though.

We've got lots of strong social skills, but we're lacking in the Stealth, Disable Device, etc. area of things. I have a pretty formidable Intimidate, but I can't speak for the others. Again, new guy.

Andrea has Bluff and Diplomacy but is pinched for skill points

Still deciding as it does sound fun since my other campaigns are slow. Will show off character just to see if it would work with party and go from there.

Questions:
1. David the guard who knows Tweaker from childhood and so gets him through the gate without much trouble,

Tiny the tinkerer (typical huge human) who he has visited over the years to see if he has any traps or oddities, and

Samantha that is someone who always seems to show up when Tweaker visits the city though he don't know why or how she knows.

2. Tweaker has been near for a long time. He traveled some without meaning to. He is carefree and find ways to make the money to survive. Try to learn about traps whereever he went as he find them fascinating. Tweaker grew up on the river edge next to the Dhaenfens. He thinks something happened there when he was little. David says it is his imagination but won't look at Tweaker when he does.

3. Tweaker am 5'11 155lbs with emerald eyes and hair that almost looks white depending on the light but is light blonde. He has a look of staying clean but seems distracted most times. Tweaker has just basic clothes and seems to have decent gear though doesn't really show off. He tries hard to avoid notice but doesn't mean he won't try and have some fun if the opportunity shows itself. If someone was to pay attention then would notice Tweaker pays attention all the time to what is happening. He will get smiles as this person or that will walk by him as if he is sharing a secret with them.

He enjoys going to Tiny's shop and sitting in the back room working on whatever new toy or invention Tiny has for Tweaker. The room is kept dim and so Tweaker's elven blood helps him. Tiny uses the suggestions to either improve or warn his customer and if good sales then might give Tweaker enough for a good dinner. These are the evenings that Tweaker can afford to have a good meal in the city and tries to meet with David. Samantha is not allowed in the shop and is normally the biggest obstacle for Tweaker to avoid. He doesn't have friends in the city for a reason but she keeps showing up.

We just lost our Urban Ranger Archer tonight.
He was my sneak buddy.

Another urban Ranger would be awesome.
They are great at so many combat styles.
A freebooter archetype would also be wicked since their move actiongroup buff stacks with inspire courage. Alpha strike ftw!

Ouch! Sounds like the group got hit hard.

He's at college.

The Exchange

Ok, that's totally possible. UMD is CHA based, but since your social heavy it could be max ranked and trait, while still not going down the path of a "social rogue". On the other hand, if the party is open to the idea. I have had the idea to make a Sage Wildblooded Sorcerer with the Seeker Archetype for a while. As a human, I would have 8 skill points per level, with the follow class skills via archetype/class or traits, that would fill in the missing gaps in the party: Use Magic Device, Disable Device, Perception, Spellcraft, Knowledge (arcana), Knowledge (nature), Appraise and one remaining skill. I would also have Trapfinding and full spell progression. Thoughts?

The Exchange

If you are totally opposed to a non traditional trap finder, that's no problem. But the Wild-blooded Sorcerer Sage (Seeker) is another option I wanted to put forth. What time zone are most of the players in?

East coast, I have major insomnia so I am up at the wee hours

The Exchange

Thanks for the good information Andrea. I am going to sleep on it. Its a shame that Alchemist's are not allowed. I could see myself playing a Alchemist (Vivisectionist) 2 / Rogue 1, who works for the Westcrown City Morgue.

Options I am going to think about and work on include the following:

1. Urban Ranger (Freebooter) 3: A disgraced Chelish naval officer on the run, trying to make a new start in Westcrown. He is a man of honor and principles that could not abide abide the corruption within the Chelish Navy.

2. Wildblooded Sorcerer (Sage, Seeker) 3: A descended scion of the exiled House Davian, the Sorcerer has returned to Westcrown to recover a heirloom rumored to be stored within Delvehaven lodge. He is bitter and covetous of what should have been rightly his.

3. Rogue 3: The second son of House Ciucci of Westcrown, He has seen where the glory of House Thrune leads, and knows that freedom cannot be given, it must be fought for. He is well educated and idealistic but grounded.

I started with the base that all of my characters needed to provide so way to disable traps and meet the required skills! Anyhow time for bed! I'll see what I can hash out of these ideas come morning. Good night!

Well I am not opposed to a Sage Sorc with Trapfinding. Certainly not something I've played with so It's different and it checks the boxes for Roguish. Perhaps focusing on Illusions/Enchants?
A subtle Trapfinding sorc would be cool. Especially since Duncan is so blunt.
DM call.

As I said my pref is probably for an Urban Ranger. We have lost, one of our only 2 full BAB chars and Ranger's can scout better than a rogue.

The Exchange

Thanks for the feedback Duncan. I came up with all of the character concepts on the fly and they will need to be tweaked. If I rolled up a Sage Sorc, I would tend to focus on Illusion/Enchant based spells, as well as spells that provided general utility. I wouldn't be building towards a blaster.

To my surprise I woke up to find 20 responses this morning - it's off to a good start.

The players in this game get along well and are fantastic promoters of the game. Duncan hit it on the head when he mentioned the game has a real time feel. Anyone taking a quick look at game thread can see what we mean.

Since the urban ranger may actually withdraw completely, rather than just limit his posts, we may be looking to add two players.

@Robbgob not playing in the AP is fine by me. Your build works. I'll look at it in more detail later.

@Celeador interesting concepts.

I would ask everyone to think hard on if they will be able to keep up with the fast pace required in this game.

As far HPs are concerned the character gets the HP max at level one, then roll plus constitution modifier for the other levels. Reroll 1's.

Dotting for interest. I'll have to see what kind of background I can come up with for an Urban Ranger.

A couple other things to note:

1. I'll roll out initiative.

2. We went to the GM keeping track of XP and simply advising when it's time to level up. The group will reach 4th level by the end of AP 1, perhaps this weekend. Even though you've been asked to create 3rd level characters, you'll have to adjust that pretty quickly. I'm not keen on having the new character, or two, be a level behind the party.

3. We post on weekends too.

Is the weekend frequency the same as weekday?

Lucrezia Villanova wrote:

Yes, maybe a bit more active if it's possible. It sort of depends on the weekend commitments though.

Several folks, including myself, have RL tabletop games too but we still manage the pace.

Celeador wrote:

Time Zones:

I'm in Eastern,
Andrea is Eastern
Orsin is Pacfic
Duncan is in Australia.

I don't recall what John is in?

Doesn't really matter for me time wise. I don't sleep.

Ring of Sustenance

PM'd someone that I know that is a possible player but they are busy in another PbP so no guerentees. If a hyper elf named SUnny comes in yand says hello that is the one I pm'd

Hey-YA there! (^_^)

So..whut do people want from a joining character?

I have some neat ideas on classes. I'm really favoring the 'Magus' at the moment.

So, as for posting. I should be able to look in upon the thread every 12 hours or so. In most games I only tend to post,

A) If I feel a question has been directly asked of the question (Same goes for interactions etc)

B) As close to 'My turn' in a combat as I can (Posting early in a spoiler if I feel I'm going to miss the window of opportunity)

C) I live seemingly close to a player already in the game called Duncan. So if that anti-podian can keep up with you lot, I should be able to. :P

As for classes/character building? This I tend to have less time to do. Also, of late, my lack of success at actually getting to join the game for which I've spent (wasted) time on has not helped my 'drive' for building new characters.

So...do folks wish a 'history' of my game play/style? Some examples of what I'm capable of? Again, what classes are even in the offing? I have a neat mechanic for a Ninja-Monk that's fun. (Though admittedly completely useless against Undead)

*Waves to Andrea1* (^_^)

Much cheers and best wishes to all.

I definitely want to join, and as far as being active that's perfect for me, i'm on very often. I am thinking of playing a elf wizard who specializes in conjuration. that way he can be the best arcane you can get and can summon things for melee. pretty much a smug true neutral wizard, but he definitely leans more towards good than evil. name will be Tiasar Auvrelth

1: his sister lia lives in the city and owns a small magic shop, and always slightly dissaproves of him not being a little more good. also lia has a half-elf daughter named scarlet (father was killed by bandits) who Tiasar is extremely protective of. she helps lia with the shop. then there's logan, a fighter who bounces disruptive people at the town pub (because there's always a pub). logan saved him on the road from some bandits, and even though logan isn't quite the intellectual that Tiasar is, they get along.

2. I've been in the city for about a week, visiting lia and scarlet. I travel often, looking for arcane lore, also picking up work i can get.

3. Tiasar and Lia were both young and living in the forest when orcs and ogres raided their home, killing most of their friends and family. In a terrible fury they both released their arcane powers, killing some of the raiders, then they fled. They decided to stay in the city instead, more protected by laws, but Tiasar grew restless and decided to travel the world, enhancing his arcane powers and learning what secrets he could.

How's that? This campaign sounds really fun, i'd love to be in it
