Shinon |
Shinon grins to himself. "...I'll be right back," he mutters to the group, before walking over to the building and stepping into the doorway, out of sight.
DM Only:
Shinon puts his bow away and smiles. "Well, well, well. Look at what we have here. I don't suppose either of you gentlemen is in a talkative mood? I'm looking for a legendary man of...a different birth. He goes by 'The Bastard of Erebus.' Word is, this man might have need for some tough warriors who don't ask any unnecessary questions, and I'd like to offer him my services."
Andrea1 |
Andrea blinks several times as Shinon goes striding over to two men. Um, just head off by himself? Not that often but I think I remember him getting rather preoccupied with certain things. Kept much of the time to himself and called the streets his home.
Shinon, please don't get yourself killed or blow our cover.

As you enter all eyes turn to you, then after you speak the room busts out in ruckus. "Boy git ye 'self to the gate ...furget ye came Nort'" The dwarf bellows. "Ain't no man known as Bas'd of Erebus, ye fool. One of the tieflings near the door leaves the room from you.

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (10) + 10 = 20
Chuckling himself, Shinon narrows his eyes and looks right at the dwarf, sizing him up. "Okay, fine. The Bastard doesn't exist. I can accept that for now. How about Jospuph Grulios. Does that name ring any bells with any of you?"
Shinon |
DM Only:
Perception check to memorize the face of the tiefling who left the room, and also which way he was going/anything else that a Perception check would get me in this situation:
1d20 + 13 ⇒ (19) + 13 = 32
baldwin the merciful |
A tiefling at the table comments, in a well spoken voice, "you don't blend..any of you...a hellknight in training...a dottari...some sort of whore and a famous opera singer." He drinks from his tankard. "ye blend like wart on my arse."

Shinon |
DM Only:
The Sense Motive check was about whether the dwarf was telling the truth about the Bastard of Erebus not existing.
Listening to the tiefling at the table, Shinon raises an eyebrow. "Other than the crass language directed at my female companion, I would be inclined to agree with you on all points save one...you say that I don't blend in? And what makes you say that? I'm dirty, poor, tired and wearing rags. How in blazes is that any different than any of you?"
Frowning at the side exit, Shinon shrugs. "Well, if that's the case, I guess I'll just be going then." Shinon quickly darts after the tiefling who left.

Non-speaking Tiefling: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (4) + 9 = 131d6 ⇒ 4
The two daggers hit you. And the throwing axe hits you flat flooted.
By way of reference the rear door is next to the bar, near where the dwarf was. The two humans are at that end of the bar. The table where the tieflings were located is 10 feet from where you were at.
Shinon |
DM Only:
Shinon groans and yanks the daggers out of his sides, gently pulling the throwing axe out of the back of his head and reaching up to rub the wound, wincing in pain. "I can see that room is off-limits. You should have said so! Well, I'm not stupid, so I'll just get back to what I was doing. Nice talking with you gentlemen."
Shinon attempts to leave the bar through the front entrance where he originally came in. If anyone else attacks him, Shinon will defend himself with his full AC and call Jon's name, asking for his help.
baldwin the merciful |
You observe the tiefling who spooke earlier is now up on his feet and he has wand in his hand.
Shinon |
DM:
Shinon rubs the back of his head, putting pressure on the wound to try and stem the bleeding. "And I said that I was leaving already! I'm going, I'm not going to bother you or your boss again, so just keep your axes to yourselves!"
He quickly moves to the door and hopefully exits it, spending all 60 feet of his movement to try and leave the tavern through the exit currently not blocked by dwarf.
Shinon |
"Hey, guys. Sorry about that. Bunch of jackasses..." Shinon mutters, reaching into his bag and pulling out a potion Andrea gave him, popping the top and downing the healing magic quickly, feeling the wound on his head close up.
Glancing up at the roof, Shinon waves. "Don't worry, we're leaving. We're not going to cause any more trouble. Sorry about the fuss!"
Laughing to himself, Shinon shoulders his bow and turns to the group. "Ah, that was an interesting little diversion. Anyway, back to the mission. Sorry for the side trip."
Shinon will continue to lead the group north towards the northern wall, keeping any eye out for anyone suspicious.
Cure Light Wounds 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
Perception check: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (13) + 13 = 26 (+2 against humans, half-elves and half-orcs)
Orsino 'Orsin' Bessatte |
Orsin looks at Shinon dumbfounded, still keeping his hand on this blade as the group presses onwards. He prays that someone else who knows the ranger better will have sense to scold him into an explanation of what in Shelyn's name just happened.
Duncan Redhammer |
Trigger, yer as good an investigator as ye are a damn trapfinder. Stay at the damn back and concentrate on shootin' till ye learn t'be good at ONE thing. Let the Songbird and Maurice do the talkin'. We here to kill goblins, so let's get that done afore ye waste anymore potions
baldwin the merciful |
The farther north you travel the more ruinous the city looks. Rubble makes much of the area look like an earthquake has struck. Here most of the buildings are missing doors, walls and roofs. The poor and destitute scurry around looking for food, while danger lurks within the shadows.
As you turn off the main road the remains of the Hostteller Manor come into view in the distance. The building has seen better days. From your vantage point it looks as if the manor was once grande. At this point you do not see any goblins or other creatures, nor do you see any doorways. The walls look 25 feet tall and the roof is intact from what you can observe. The two trees look dead and rotten. You are approaching from the top of the map and see the wall.
I grabbed a shell of map off dunjinni for this encounter. I added the objects such as trees. This is your current view from roughly 150 ft down the road. You have plently of good areas to have cover to watch the buidling from.
Shinon |
Shinon chuckles quietly to himself. "Sorry, Duncan, but that was a private matter. I had to question the lot of them myself. They're definitely hiding something, but I don't think they'rr the guys I'm after."
baldwin the merciful |
Did the map load completley since all I see is a 13 square long 1 square wide picture
Yep...it loaded all the way. That is all you see from your POV coming up the road. One day, I may run a live game online using the maptools....the fog of war feature reveals only small segments as the DM opens it up. Until then this is what you get.
Duncan Redhammer |
Well, at least this approach is easy. But entry is another matter, let's move hard up against the wall an I can look about for a door. We can move about en masse if ye like, but probly safer t'put a feeler out.
Andrea1 |
Duncan scouting sounds like a good idea, perhaps Shinon can go as back up in case there is an ambush and so Duncan can keep an eye on him
as well. There is a light rebuke in her words but a slight one. If there is trouble, the rest of the group can cover you. Andrea has her crossbow ready.
Orsino 'Orsin' Bessatte |
"Agreed." Orsin tightens his grip on the sharkskin hilt of his blade and steps beside Andrea. "We'll wait for you here then, master Duncan. If you cannot find a way in at first, I have a scroll for that should reveal a secret passage if there are any. I only have one, however, so I suggest we rely on mundane methods first."
Duncan Redhammer |
Right then, Shinon you follow 25 ft behind me and stay low.
Perception1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15
Stealth1d20 + 6 - 5 ⇒ (11) + 6 - 5 = 12
Duncan Moves ahead reasonably quietly, but louder than he'd like in his armor
"Gonna hafta get this quietened."
He keeps an eye on his surroundings and has his Bastard Sword in hand.
Shinon |
Shinon groans. "With stealthy clanking like that, is there even a point to me sneaking with you?"
He follows Duncan, moving quietly up to the wall. "You know more about stonework than I. Can you see a door anywhere?
Stealth 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (17) + 14 = 31
Perception 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (18) + 13 = 31
Duncan Redhammer |
Shinon groans. "With stealthy clanking like that, is there even a point to me sneaking with you?"
Yup. With me making all the noise, the scary goblins are SURE to miss you.
Do we see anything DM?
baldwin the merciful |
How close is the party to Duncan and Shinon? Tactically you can move up to about 60 feet in front of the ruined Manor before there is open ground that has to be crossed.
As Duncan and Shinon move to 60 feet from the manor there is break and clearing of the view. You have to cross open ground but there are patches of low laying rubble, debris, fallen trees or low bushes. There is a dried out broken water fountain 20 feet from the wall, forming the center of city square.
Both of you are able to make it the within 40 feet of the wall where you can scout a bit behind a shelled out wagon. You don't see anybody from your current POV.
Duncan and Shinon make two stealth and two perception checks which will carry you for the remaining 40 feet.
Andrea1 |
Perhaps about 40 or so feet? Keep the wall between us and any LOS from the manor. Until Duncan and Shinon are done scouting, we shouldn't enter the grounds.
Andrea waits with the rest of the group, her crossbow heled tightly as she watches Duncan and Shinon go ahead. Perhaps we should splurge for a suit of leather for Duncan.
Orsino 'Orsin' Bessatte |
Orsin begins speaking softly, seemingly to himself until he turns to Andrea with a question.
"Andrea. What a lovely name. I hope you paid no mind to what the dottari said earlier. You look capable enough to me." He offers the priestess a warm smile. "Are you from Westcrown?"
