Are we gonna wait for Kenji to chime in? I'd hate to blow a ressurection or rasie dead if the RL player has abandoned the concept- he did say he was thinking of somethimg else.
For all we know he could have a bad ass Magus in mind or something

While I'm not sure how the advancement works, I wonder if this fits into the often discussed topic about how CR quite often doesn't match party strength to monster strength. This is one quibble with the 3.5-.75 system where things start breaking down after a certain level for example:
1.Armor becomes less something to keep you from being hit and more a carrier for enchantments(Due to high BaBs).
I've been in some combats against higer end AC creatures/beings and it got ridiculous with the party flailing around for several rounds even with flanking
2.More difficult to harm monsters with special DRs
1-2 Edition D&D had a pretty simple system of +x to hit. If you didn't have a weapon of the proper plus, you did no damage. While this meant that you were hosed if a gargoyle dropped down and had no magic, you knew where things stood. 3.5+ added in weapon types, materials, enchantments all mixed together. While one could nickel and dime gargoyles to death it was tedious and the party had to spend more on various weapons just in case.

Ok. Just so we can get a good game plan when we regroup, we have these activities we can do..
1.Goblin hunting(still a few days out?)
2.Deal with our prisoner and the Red Knives
3.Shadow beast hunting.(We need to do research from what Kenji told us.)
4.Connected somehow with 2-3 perhaps, deal with the issue of the mangled corpses.(Mystery of Stoutpour and the slain nobles)
5. Areal's tip about the Bastards of Erebus

Baldwin just a question. I believe I need to tweak my channel DC
DC 10 base
+2 Improved Channel
+2 CHA
Now. I believe I get +1 (for DC 15) from the 'One half your cleric level'
rule but do you round up or down? If you round up, I would be DC 16.
Shinon |
Okay, so I'm back, sort of. I still have a few programs to install and some data to back up on my new computer so I probably won't be as active as I was before until the weekend, but I guarantee that I will post at least once IC per day until everything gets settled. I'm really grateful to all of you for your patience.
Alright, now that I've posted that little update, time to level up Shinon and start reading those 192 posts I missed!
Shinon |
There we go! Shinon is now fully leveled up and sporting a whopping +5 more Perception than he was before, for a grand total of +13 to all Perception checks (+15 against humans).
Now I'm off to read how Kenji was brutally murdered by crit-rolling ghouls!

Round down. CRB page 12
Rounding
Occassionally the rules ask you to round a result or value. Unless otherwise stated, always round down.
Exception: Certain rolls, such as damage and hit points, have a minimum of 1.
Its on the pfsrd, under Getting Started.

I understand that Shinon is back and able to post again but John is going to be offline for a bit. I will DMPC John until he gets back.
I have busy day at work today, but will be posting late afternoon and this evening.
Kenji if you are still following this thread can you put up your character, so I can work him into the story?

Shinon before you go running off I thought you were getting janiven to come pay her respects? the other thing, I don't really want to get into another side mission updating the nobles yet. I would like to begin witht he goblin hunt next.
You will have plenty of time to update folks once the goblins hunt has occurred.

I appreciate that, it took me a while to get the group back together recently and I want to run a short mini-side mission before the last adventure in the book 1. To conclude a loose end or two. There will be plenty of time to talk to nobles.

U-oh.
Why did we bring our 'city most wanted' boss to a place where we had 3 cops?
Better hope they are REAL grateful we saved that guard's life.....
Kenji Masada |
Hey just wanted to update you all to let you know I am still present. Only, I am having a REAL hard time finding a concept I want to play for this game. I keep throwing out every build I come up with. This is harder than I thought it would be.
Kenji Masada |
The following where ideas I had
First on my list is a Master of diguise. A rogue concept that focuses more on skill use to resolve problems. My favorite concept because of how unorthodox it is in regards to gaming. A useless character in combat though. The design has little to no combat capability and is better suited to sabotage and stealth based missions. This character also suffers a hit to HP. I have built it with a high escape capability and ease of getting around. The hope was to take it to Master Spy prestige class. The GM pointed out that combat will happen a bit and how I would want to run this character would put me into several solo missions and I get the impression that combat seems to be the only way we get to resolve stuff in this campaign so the build won't work here. Would've loved to give it a try though.
Another build is a bard archer that would eventually become an arcane archer. This character is female and a nobleman as well. She would be good support and would have a lot of role play possibility. The thing is I am usually hesitant to run females in MMO style games. Had an incident a few years back that has kind of made the whole thing more than a bit uncomfortable. Still pondering weather or not to give it another try though.
Another build/s are a variety of sorcerers. I don't like witches, wizards, or summoners and the party seems to be lacking a arcane caster. Though the concept of a sorcerer is something new to me and kind of neat, I am still not totally fond of magic users in general and feel they take a lot away from the game. I much prefer mundane games as opposed to magic based games. More challenging and more immersive. But that is just me.
I have a gunslinger build I REALLY wanted to use somewhere but have yet to find a GM who would allow it. Sadness but it cannot be helped. Since gunslingers are REALLY good at making their own weapons, gun rarity would not be an issue but in the end it comes down to flavor. Our GM has decided not to allow them and therefore I need to shelf the idea.
Then we have other builds,
I have a few fighters mostly but we already have one of those so it doesn't make sense to double up. Plus that's my usual fall back and I get tired of running the same way all the time.
I have more than a few monk characters but they are mostly repeating Kenji and that is just a bit tasteless.
Then there are Cavaliers.......yeah not gonna happen. No good use for them in a city where we have to hide all the time and crawl through sewers
Looked into the use of other Divine classes but again that goes back to my dislike of using too much magic in a game. Not to mention I suck and making magic based characters so really, any form of spellcaster is not high on my list of desired build.
So this is my dilemma. I am interested in hearing any advice you may have.

A Master Spy type can be useful since we have become aware of a number notable figures that have been up to no good. Sneaking around and grabbing info/other evidence. Corrupt tavern owners, dottari and Hellknight officers and nobles who no doubt have oodles of incriminating evidence on them. You swipe the info and John's Hellknight and Shinon's noble connections present the info since they are more or less respected and can get the stuff pushed through, and the more corrupt officals snarled up in scandel, the less effective their forces will be.
As for combat, you can still provide plenty of help. Weapon finesse and acrobatics lets you tumble and set up flanks for Duncan and John, and scouting is always welcome. An invisible spy can steal weapons, equipment, jam doors so reinforcements can't arrive and act as a kind of combat medic by tumbling around and using cure potions and healing wands(Use Magic device).
Bards are excellent for Rping of course. Gender of character is your choice for what makes you comfortable.
Cavaliers are very mount oriented, but being excellent leaders you can use that to inspire people to resist the corrupted government. Perhaps eventually set yourself up as a new Dottari trainer. John would take the hellknight side.
Kenji Masada |
The issue with the bard isn't as bad as I made it sound. It's is actually my most likely option at the moment.
I think I still want to run the spy just a bit more. The concept is a challenge but I really like that challenge so I think I will go with the spy.
And if the spy dies I will switch to the bard.

Yay! Sneaky stuff ahoy!
Andrea's plans for the future? Have special 'Midnight Love' clubs. People come in for the night and listen to music, drink, dance and have great sex. Boost morale and provide a safe spot for the night.(All PG rated on the boards of course.)
Andrea's new character arc is embracing being a Calistrian. :)
STR Ranger |
Kenji,
Have you thought about a Magus? You seem to defineately prefer roleplaying over roll playing if you know what I mean.
Magai are pretty awesome. Plus there arcane list is limited. They don't get the truly gamebbreaking wizard spells (like teleport) till really high levels. They have a ton of skill points (INT based casters) and Vanish and Invis is on thier spellist.
Damage CAN be OMG but only if you really work on it. The rest of the time they are like a rogue+ magic. You could flank for (ok, 1 handed damage) while casting a party buff.
If you wanna tone down the Magic even MORE then the kensai Archetype gives up a spell slot per level (meaning they have to cast less) in exchange for a free weapon (Katana ftw) and a bunch of Critical strike class abilities.
I am playing a Hexcrafter (admittedly THE most powerful magus) in a Crimson Throne game and am having a ball.
Bladebound is also less powerful than a normal Magus, but having your own leveling Magic weapon rocks.
Let me know if you like any of this and I'll be happy to help out.

As for skill suggestions for Kenji's new character, look into skill points as favored class(Or HP since you might be more fragile)
When choosing spy skills, get the essentials first.
Stealth
Disable Device
Perception
Acrobatics
Bluff(For flat footed attacks)
Diplomacy
Climb
Knowledge skills are useful as well as languages
Disguise can be good for spies, especialy if you can toss on disguise magic

Wow. 2,140 posts in two months for main gameplay. I hope we can keep up the pace.
So, Andrea will be discussing getting time off for the goblin hunt with her employer. Making note that there will hopefully be chances to find loot to sell through the Exchange House. We need to work on the debt asap. Some options;
1.Andrea will be doing spellcasting. Zone of Truth and Eagle's Splender make excellent spells to use for a money house.
2.Shinon does seem to do training for a noble already, offer more archery classes for bored noble youths.
3 John looks to be skilled enough now to train others, if he trains some Dottari recruits, we can help influence them to our side.
4.Duncan has his smithing and seems to have possible noble patrons?
