"This thing is quite nimble, but it doesn't seem too dangerous."

Female Human Obsidian Walker (Ranger) 5

The chaos of trying to avoid her companions makes for a difficult shot as Tamayra tries to target the creature.

Ranged touch1d20 + 5 - 4 ⇒ (13) + 5 - 4 = 14Shooting into melee
1d12 ⇒ 1

Male Half-Orc Monk 9 / Puppetmaster 2

The shot flies toward the creature, on target, but at the last moment the creature seems to shift. Though impacted it seems to not to be hit hard. After recovering from the onslaught, it lunges toward Rheynold. It fails to grasp him.

Bite: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9

Round 3 All acting.

Female Human Obsidian Gunner Lev 5 | HP 51/51HP | AC 18 (FF 13 Touch 15) | Init+6 | Saves (Fort+5,Reflex+8,Will+4) | Grit 3/3 | Per +11

I think we're skipping Rheynold right?
Jenya tries to steady herself and fires again.

Point blank shot on touch: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (11) + 8 = 191d8 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10

and reloads with another paper cartridge.

Male Half-Orc Monk 9 / Puppetmaster 2

The creature seems unable to attack effectively, left off balance, Jenya's shot blasts through it's sandlike form. It seems to hold together, but has clearly been damaged.

Aak takes another swing, with his weapon and shield.

Iron Sprocket, knowing now that the creature will evade if he swings too powerfully, aims more carefully this time.

1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 141d8 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10

Male Half-Orc Monk 9 / Puppetmaster 2

Going to assume some tactical coordination for sake of brevity.

Seeing the creature weakened, Aak and Rheynold coordinate their attack by assuming flanking positions around the creature. The tactic pays off as Aak's strike connects, nearly downing the creature.

Who's acting now?

Male Half-Orc Monk 9 / Puppetmaster 2

Jenya and Tamayra still have actions left for the round.

Male Half-Orc Monk 9 / Puppetmaster 2

Rheynold:
As you watch the creature struggle, you're reminded of a sketch you saw in the book found earlier. Perhaps if you have a chance to look back over the book after the creature is dispatched the creature you might be able to get a better sense of it's origin.

Female Human Obsidian Gunner Lev 5 | HP 51/51HP | AC 18 (FF 13 Touch 15) | Init+6 | Saves (Fort+5,Reflex+8,Will+4) | Grit 3/3 | Per +11

Jenya repeats the actions of her last round trying to destroy the wavering creature.

Point blank shot on touch: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (10) + 8 = 181d8 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8

Female Human Obsidian Walker (Ranger) 5

'C'mon girl, slow deep breaths' Tamayra thinks to herself as she takes careful aim and fires at the creature.

1d20 + 5 - 4 ⇒ (17) + 5 - 4 = 18
1d12 ⇒ 6

Male Half-Orc Monk 9 / Puppetmaster 2

The two shots seem to echo through the vent at nearly the same time. Both hit and though it is unclear which shot did the creature in, it is clear that it is no more. All that remains of the serpentine shape is a pile of sand.

We are now out of combat.

Rheynold:
As soon as you're able to flip through the book, you quickly find the sketch. It is nearly identical to the creature you just encountered. The following notes are included. "I've seen this beast several times now. At least one of the times I swear I heard foot prints before it appeared. From what I can gather it is unlike the other elementals I have encountered. Where the others seem to be at home in these strange caverns, this one seems out of place. Something tells me that something or someone is summoning it, to lie in wait for me."

Female Human Obsidian Gunner Lev 5 | HP 51/51HP | AC 18 (FF 13 Touch 15) | Init+6 | Saves (Fort+5,Reflex+8,Will+4) | Grit 3/3 | Per +11

Jenya shudders. There is a lot of evil in this place. So much of it bearing down on the Dome.

Grand Lodge

Male Half-Orc

Aak kicks around the sand, where the creature inhabited for anything it may have been guarding. Or signs of where it came from.

perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4

Male Half-Orc Monk 9 / Puppetmaster 2

Aak:
You see more sand with the surface of the vent underneath.

Female Human Obsidian Gunner Lev 5 | HP 51/51HP | AC 18 (FF 13 Touch 15) | Init+6 | Saves (Fort+5,Reflex+8,Will+4) | Grit 3/3 | Per +11

Can we assume Jenya got the last shot in? She needs the grit :p

Let's move on. she says She'll stay in the middle of the pack behind Aak and Rheynold. Are we out of the sand?

Male Half-Orc Monk 9 / Puppetmaster 2

Technically Jenya would have had the first shot and it would have been the killing shot. Was just taking some liberties with the description.

Male Symbiont (Human) Cleric (Ancestral Priest) 5; HP 30/30; +0 Init; +7 Perception; AC 18 (Flat 18, Touch 10); Fort +6, Ref +1, Will +8

"According to this diary, that sand creature may not be from here. Did anyone hear footsteps before it arrived?"

Female Human Obsidian Gunner Lev 5 | HP 51/51HP | AC 18 (FF 13 Touch 15) | Init+6 | Saves (Fort+5,Reflex+8,Will+4) | Grit 3/3 | Per +11

No, it just... appeared. Let us move on and be done with this accursed place

Male Half-Orc Monk 9 / Puppetmaster 2

Though the sand from above still seems to be falling slowly, there doesn't seem to be much other danger. The darkness continues, but very little else appears within the vent in the hours ahead. Soon grumbling stomachs and tired feet signal many in the group that it might be best to stop, rest, and eat. With the uniform nature of the vent one place to stop is much like any other.

Feel free to fill any time with PC chat, but at this point it's time to plan a watch / make camp.

Female Human Obsidian Gunner Lev 5 | HP 51/51HP | AC 18 (FF 13 Touch 15) | Init+6 | Saves (Fort+5,Reflex+8,Will+4) | Grit 3/3 | Per +11

Are we far enough that the magic devices are working now?

Male Half-Orc Monk 9 / Puppetmaster 2

Another day's travel at the least, but no more than two and magic should begin to work.

Female Human Obsidian Gunner Lev 5 | HP 51/51HP | AC 18 (FF 13 Touch 15) | Init+6 | Saves (Fort+5,Reflex+8,Will+4) | Grit 3/3 | Per +11

Jenya sighs Perhaps we should halt for now. It has been a long day. We should set watch and camp for the night. Perhaps you can tell us what else you found in that book Rheynold and Aak maybe you can tell us where you are from and ask us your questions of us

The fight with the sand creature has done much to improve Jenya's comfort with the half-orc.

Male Symbiont (Human) Cleric (Ancestral Priest) 5; HP 30/30; +0 Init; +7 Perception; AC 18 (Flat 18, Touch 10); Fort +6, Ref +1, Will +8

"I can try and explain what's in here, but I've still yet to understand everything myself. If you all feel like it's a good time to rest, I am fine with that."

Iron Sprocket, then thinking back to the note on the sand creature, continues. "Keeping watch would be a good idea. I fear there may be more of those sand creatures waiting for us, on top of the native elementals. Let me know when you're ready for me to explain this diary, I'll try to figure out more as I can."

Iron Sprocket then flips through the diary while keeping pace with the others (whether they keep moving or stay put).

Grand Lodge

Male Half-Orc

I could go for a rest. It has been a long day for me as well. I will do my best to explain, a tall take it is though

He unfurls his bed, and uses his pack as a makeshift pillow.

I will be happy to take first watch, when you are prepared to rest

Female Human Obsidian Walker (Ranger) 5

"Sounds like as good a plan as any" Tamayra says quietly. "I'll take the second watch"

Male Half-Orc Monk 9 / Puppetmaster 2

The first few watches are uneventful, but as much of the group begins to feel rested, a flame like light can be seen in the distance approaching. At this point all but Aak recognize the light as that of the magma elementals that have been encountered.

Rheynold:
The book contains two parts, the first a sparse spell book with blank pages toward the back half of the book filled with notes and sketches. Notes in the rear detail the author's arrival in the vent, which reminds you a bit of what Aak has said and of the crack in the ceiling you've passed. The writers seems to have stumbled into the vent system from above ground in an area much further from the dome. From what you gather the writer placed the book purposefully near where you and the others entered the vent before he died / was captured. Some of the sketches resemble the creatures you've encountered while others depict more insect like creatures, which the author encountered prior to encountering the vent area. Other details describe the writer's sense that something or someone is organizing the elementals.

Everyone is fully rested. For sake of watches let me know who took the last watch. I'll need a perception roll from the PC who was on the last watch.

Female Human Obsidian Gunner Lev 5 | HP 51/51HP | AC 18 (FF 13 Touch 15) | Init+6 | Saves (Fort+5,Reflex+8,Will+4) | Grit 3/3 | Per +11

I'll take last watch
Jenya, glad to take the last match which allowed her uninterrupted rest, peers out into the gloom of the vent with her lamp by her side.

Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9

Male Half-Orc Monk 9 / Puppetmaster 2

Jenya:
As the end of your watch approaches you see a flame like light in the distance of the vent. Though you're fairly sure it is the light of the magma elementals you've encountered. You're unsure if the light is that of a single creature or more.

Male Symbiont (Human) Cleric (Ancestral Priest) 5; HP 30/30; +0 Init; +7 Perception; AC 18 (Flat 18, Touch 10); Fort +6, Ref +1, Will +8

Note, since Iron Sprocket doesn't actually sleep, he pretends to sleep while always being a secondary watch in case something goes wrong.

Female Human Obsidian Gunner Lev 5 | HP 51/51HP | AC 18 (FF 13 Touch 15) | Init+6 | Saves (Fort+5,Reflex+8,Will+4) | Grit 3/3 | Per +11

Maybe you can make a perception roll as well then Rheynold

Enemies sighted! Jenya calls out waking the others. I think I see magma elementals in the distance

She makes sure her pistol is loaded with powder and shot.

Male Half-Orc Monk 9 / Puppetmaster 2

As everyone awakes it is clear that there are multiple elementals approaching.

Perception rolls please.

Perception>14:
There are three elementals approaching.

Perception>19:
In addition to the elementals you think you see something moving in the dark. Moving quickly.

Female Human Obsidian Gunner Lev 5 | HP 51/51HP | AC 18 (FF 13 Touch 15) | Init+6 | Saves (Fort+5,Reflex+8,Will+4) | Grit 3/3 | Per +11

Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24

Three elementals! And something else dark and swift! Jenya switches on her bullseye lantern and trains it at the incoming group.

Rheynold I know you wish to try and reason with these monsters. Attempt it quickly!

Male Symbiont (Human) Cleric (Ancestral Priest) 5; HP 30/30; +0 Init; +7 Perception; AC 18 (Flat 18, Touch 10); Fort +6, Ref +1, Will +8

Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7

"Where? I don't see them." Iron Sprocket says, trying to fake grogginess in his voice.

Bluff Tiredness: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (3) + 8 = 11

Female Human Obsidian Gunner Lev 5 | HP 51/51HP | AC 18 (FF 13 Touch 15) | Init+6 | Saves (Fort+5,Reflex+8,Will+4) | Grit 3/3 | Per +11

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7

There are three of them not including the dark creature. Speak to them quickly but I think we have a fight on our hands!

Jenya makes sure that she has powder and shot loaded as she draws her pistol.

Male Half-Orc Monk 9 / Puppetmaster 2

As the group wakes the elementals continue to approach. Their slow movement provides plenty of time for everyone to wake.

Jenya:
The strange nature of the elementals makes it near impossible for you to gather their intentions. Roll perception again.

I don't see anything but if you say so

When the elementals get within 60', he will cast bless.

Male Half-Orc Monk 9 / Puppetmaster 2

Jenya:
Though you're having no problem tracking the approach of the elementals, you've lost track of the figure in the shadows.

Female Human Obsidian Gunner Lev 5 | HP 51/51HP | AC 18 (FF 13 Touch 15) | Init+6 | Saves (Fort+5,Reflex+8,Will+4) | Grit 3/3 | Per +11

Frustrated by her companion's inability to see the threat Jenya orders Form up in front of me. Rheynold call out a greeting

Male Symbiont (Human) Cleric (Ancestral Priest) 5; HP 30/30; +0 Init; +7 Perception; AC 18 (Flat 18, Touch 10); Fort +6, Ref +1, Will +8

"Are you sure you aren't seeing things? None of us can see anything. This cave may have gotten to you. Nonetheless, we're up now I guess."

Terran:
"If there is anybody out there, we are not here to harm you. We are only mere explorers, looking for answers."

Diplomacy: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (15) - 1 = 14

Male Half-Orc Monk 9 / Puppetmaster 2

Loud grumbling, as if rocks breaking, echos through the vent.

Terran:
Imposters! Only the master speaks! No other master!

Aak:
The elementals are now within 60 feet. Re roll perception for vision only.

Grand Lodge

Male Half-Orc

1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22

Male Half-Orc Monk 9 / Puppetmaster 2

Aak:
You can make out clearly not only the three elementals, but a hairless humanoid lurking in the dark on back-bent, dog-like legs. Though its head seems to be partially covered with dark cloth, you can make out its tiny arms and three-fingered hands, which hold a large spear like weapon.

Grand Lodge

Aak will point out the guy in the back, his eyes don't leave the robed figures location.

Male Symbiont (Human) Cleric (Ancestral Priest) 5; HP 30/30; +0 Init; +7 Perception; AC 18 (Flat 18, Touch 10); Fort +6, Ref +1, Will +8

Terran:
"You are free beings, why do you serve one who claims to be your master?"

Male Half-Orc Monk 9 / Puppetmaster 2

Terran:
The master grants us freedom. Flee impostors or die where you stand.

Initiative rolls for all. Only PCs with darkvision can make out the figure Aak is pointing out until light is focused on the area he is pointing towards.

Aak:
As the elementals charge forward the figure in the shadows stays still.
