Through the carved tunnels you walk. For most of you these are the very same passages you walked during your youth. For one, you walk the tunnels with slight apprehension, your instructions were clear - but way is new. Regardless of the familiarity, soon you cannot help but know that something is different. Only a select few are invited into the central passages that surround the dome. Columns stand as they do periodically throughout the city, but here they are larger.

These columns have stood as long as the city itself. They were built even before the dome rose, defiant into the merciless desert above. Escorts greet each of you as you near the innermost buildings. Each takes a different path, some winding through buildings, others heading into upper levels. Doors, stairs, halls, and alleys. It is clear the elders meant to disorient you. Likewise, the pace is deliberate. All of you arrive at the same time, a central corridor lies ahead. The escorts gesture silently as the large doors ahead slowly open.

The large room has a simple stone table in the center, surrounded by sturdy wooden stools - a luxury that few ever see let alone sit upon. Tapestries line the walls, just below the railing the lines the upper level. Nearly all represent one of the houses of the dome. Accept for two. One, displays the ancestral crystal - symbolic of your forebearers who live on through the gearforged. The other, newer than the rest, shows a humanoid silhouette - embroidered with a small gear. One upon its head and one upon its heart - the symbionts.

Just beyond the railings you can make out figures in the shadow, observing. It must be the council of elders. A slight gleaming in the torch light tells you that even the gearforged is in attendance. At the table sits a newly elected elder, he motions for you to join him at the table.

It is good to see each of you here. As you may know, I am Oso. I have, as my first task as the newest elder, summoned each of you here because you represent the best of your houseses. I leave it to each of you to decide whether or not it is prudent to reveal your house affiliations or not. In time, the trust you build in the field will take precedent over whatever faith you hold in the old ways.

A slight murmur can be heard from above. Oso smiles as he continues.

Your first task is simple. You must make your way to the corridor, where a repair squad awaits you. Your job is to guard them as they conduct urgent repairs within the corridor. Word of this must not leave this room. The corridor is in great danger. Attacks have increased and all but the perimeter guard have been summoned to protect the mines. So it is left to the four of you to insure that our lifeline stay operational. There is little time, but if you have questions speak them quickly. But before you do, I would suggest introducing yourselves. Though we here Oso gestures to those above, know each of you, you may not know one another.

I've left some details here open as I'd like to leave each of you some latitude in how your house is defined and if you decide to reveal your house. Simply put the houses represent the families that survived through centuries. Most are associated with specific talents or areas of one of the three lost cities. When resources were scarce, the houses often competed with one another to increase their chances at survival. Though cooperation has since long been established as the unspoken law of he city, the council of elders still honors the old ways. Unless of course infighting endangers the city.

Jenya kneels, one knee on the ground and the other held in front in a pose that is both respectful while still befitting her status as a gunslinger. As the elder stops speaking she gets up and looks around her.

"I am Jenya, of the Poole family of House Desoto." she unholsters her crystal embedded pistol and taps it to her forehead in salute before returning it to its place on her belt. "Gunslinger. As the matter seems urgent maybe we can leave the detailed introductions for later."

Following Jenya's introduction Ergas steps forward with determination, curtly bows his head and speaks.

"Pleased to be selected by the honored council. I am Ergas Omund, of House Skavon. A former miner of the corridor, proud to bear this axe and shield to defend it. I agree with my new comrade here. Best be on our way so the repair squad can set about their work."

House Skavon is a dwarven house originally of the city Hillside, where they were overseers of the mine-sites, and therefore a House of great wealth and power before the sandstorms.

Female Human Obsidian Walker (Ranger) 5

The silent young woman in black steps forward from the shadows where she stood watching every minor detail. Dressed in all black, she makes a similar gesture to Jenya's, the long barrel of her musket extending over her shoulder.

"Tamayra Barrow of House Draven. Corridor Guard, Shadow Unit. While the repair team is in danger, anything else can wait." she says quietly in a determined tone.

Carefully listening to the others' introductions as he tries to remember to which house Rheynold belongs, Iron Sprocket steps forwards.

"Rheynold Renwold here of house Melletier (Mel-et-ee-eh). I understand your need for urgency fellow honorees, but I would rather learn more about what we will be going up against before rushing into combat."

Iron Sprocket bows to Oso and the Elders above.

"Forgive me for asking; it has been a while since I have been in the city. What kind of foul creatures are attacking the repair squad, and do these attacks occur frequently?

House Melletier was well known for it's artisans and tradesmen. It managed to secure most of its people during the initial storm by promising to provide crafting and building expertise free of charge as long as its people were taken care of.

Female Human Obsidian Walker (Ranger) 5

Consisting primarily of a City Guard garrison and those in the surrounding area that they were able to rescue, House Draven is named after the most memorable hero of that dark day Lieutenant Commander Yesenia Draven. Consistent with it's origin's the house's members are instilled with a sense of duty and honor, believing strongly in their mission to protect the citizens of the city in whatever capacity they are able.

Oso nods, "It is good to be prepared for what is ahead. Continuing quietly, just above a whisper. A mere week ago a group of miners making an exploratory dig encountered a tunnel of sorts; formed naturally, our best scholars believe it was created by the flow of the now dormant volcano. The Makers tells us that there must be a rift somewhere within the tunnel because hours after the tunnel was discovered creatures of fire and melting rock could be seen moving within. It wasn't much longer before they emerged. Once they knew something other than rock lay beyond the tunnel, they began emerging in numbers - passing through the very rock."

Oso pauses, to await any further questions. After any questions, he continues.

"Unless there are other urgent concerns, the council guard will show the four of you out, individually, like you arrived. They will guide you within sight of the corridor entrance, where you will all gather with the repair squad."

The Makers is how casters are referred to beneath the dome. This name comes from their primary duty, making, maintaining, and sustaining the protective obsidian stone.

Sigh. I guess I forgot to change my default alias before posting before. Oh well.

Once Oso is done speaking, Iron Sprocket bows once more and awaits escort out of the chamber.

Ahhh.. he turned from a vampire thing to a helmeted dude!

Jenya nods at Rheynold and the others, bows towards the council, and is ready to head out as well.

House Desoto consists of a close knit group of families all of whom lived in the Desoto district of Riverside (a minority of House members believe that Desoto was instead in Merchantville). A very large number of people from the area managed to escape the storms and it only made sense for the bonds forged in that time to be maintained underground. The House is heavily involved in maintaining and running the farms that feed most of the inhabitants of the Dome. The Poole family is the most influential of the families that make up the House and has been since inception.

Male Dwarf Ancestral Steward (Fighter) 2; 17/21 HP; +4 Init, +6 Percpt; AC 19, Touch 12, FF 17; +5 Fort, +2 Ref, +1 Will

Ergas, following suit, bows before the council, swings his axe over his shoulder with a grunt, and awaits his escort.

Male Half-Orc Monk 9 / Puppetmaster 2

No worries about the alias. I'll mark stuff as NPCs for thread info. I'll get all the house info. up on the web page and flesh out any details as I see need. Once details get posted just give me a poke in discussion if things need tweaking. Midterm grading finishes up this week so I should be able to get all the details up late this week or this weekend.

Four taps sound simultaneously. With a glance it is clear that the guards have arrived, the large doors are slowly opening making way for everyone to depart. Oso claps his hands quickly, holding them in a arch shape above his head - the traditional salute of the obsidian order as everyone departs.

Each of you depart with your individual guard, leaving in much the way you arrived. The turns are slighting different, but a few of the passages and buildings you pass through look familiar. Once you emerge into a recognizable passage, it is clear you are near the main road that leads through the city, toward the corridor. After a few moments it is clear that the rest of the group and their escorts are on the same road. Tapping their weapons in unison, the guards change their pace so that the group is together. Motioning forward, the eldest guard points toward the direction of the corridor.

In the distance you can see supplies being loaded onto a narrow cart. Several goats, another prized possession beneath the dome are being harnessed to the cart.

The obsidian order is a military group from within the house of builders. Though a very small house, their ancestors discovered the power of the obsidian to protect the survivors and helped develop the ritual to magically enhance the volcanic glass. Many of those born to the house of builders show magic abilities and thus have to give up their house affiliation to become one of The Makers. The few who do not show magic ability, swear their undying loyalty to protecting the city. The obsidian order is made up of those with the most martial ability.

Male Half-Orc Monk 9 / Puppetmaster 2

The repair squad is busily preparing for departure as the four of you approach. Though hard at work, each glances and offers a nod of respect in your direction. The group is made up of mostly dwarves, though a couple of humans are helping finish loading the cart. Each of these individuals has a finely crafted crossbow secured over their shoulders. One of the dwarves, the eldest and likely the leader of the squad finishes explaining something to a couple of dwarves and then turns to approach.

"Right on time. We'll be ready to go shortly. I am Tairn Seco, commander of this repair squad. Looking toward the squad, five dwarves including Tairn and the two humans. We do not have time for proper introductions. However, you should know that Thomas and Stephen are the two tall ones. Smiling ever so briefly, Tairn continues quickly before heading back to look over the cart. As I'm sure you've noticed, each has a crossbow and each is a good shot. Though they report to me, in a fight I leave it to you to direct their fire." With a quick nod, the dwarf heads back to the cart.

This first encounter will essentially involve the cart moving through the corridor, stopping periodically to make repairs. The corridor itself slopes downward, using the bedrock as protection from the storm above. Though no obsidian is needed to provide this protection, a narrow line of tiles runs along the ceiling of the right side of the corridor. These tiles relay the power of the obsidian through the corridor providing light through specially treated sand glass blocks that have been mounted into the center of the ceiling. Magic does not function directly beneath the obsidian tiles or functioning sand glass blocks. The repair squad is replacing / repairing tiles and glass to keep the corridor well lit. The squad has and will use a supply of torches to provide light in areas where the sand glass has dimmed or lost power because of damaged tiles. I will provide a tactical maps that mark magic dead zones and indicate light levels. Spells can be cast into a magic dead zone within the corridor, but fail if cast by someone standing within a dead zone.

Though confident in her training and her aim this is the first time that Jenya will see actual combat. She breathes deeply to calm her nerves and hopes nobody else has noticed her jitters

"Well met Tairn. I think we're all ready to go as well. Ergas, are you good to take point? I will move with the Cart along with Thomas and Stephen while Rheynold and Tamarya take rearguard."

Jenya turns to her three companions with a raised eyebrow and, not wanting to seem overbearing, invites comment.

"Is that alright with everyone?"

Male Dwarf Ancestral Steward (Fighter) 2; 17/21 HP; +4 Init, +6 Percpt; AC 19, Touch 12, FF 17; +5 Fort, +2 Ref, +1 Will

Ergas nods his head to each miner, bowing slightly lower then they do, offering each their proper respect. As far as he's concerned, it's their work that's paramount, and as a guard he is but another tool at their disposal.
Anyone here he knows personally from his line of work in the mines? If so he will greet them as an equal, shaking hands and expressing his pride in being posted with them.

"Aye Jenya, I'll take the lead. Your formation is fine with me, too. Let's be off then, so these men can get about their work."

Without waiting for anyone else's approval, Ergas promptly strides to the wagon's front. He straps his shield on his left arm and swings his axe over his right shoulder, ready to depart at a moment's notice.

Not wanting to argue, Iron Sprocket nods and awaits departure of the cart.

Female Human Obsidian Walker (Ranger) 5

Tamayra raises an eyebrow for a moment, taking Jenya's measure. Thoughtfully she nods at the other woman's suggestion. "Make's sense I suppose, I've probably got the best range so hanging back is fine by me. But if any of you notice anything unusual, let me know."[/b] she says, taking her place in the formation.

Map: Corridor Positioning

The squad heads forward, Tairn stays near the goats pulling the cart (circles out front), one dwarf sits upon the front of the cart, two others ride upon the back - their eyes toward the corridor ceiling. The last dwarf follows by foot flanking the cart near the corridor wall - examining the tiles above periodically. Stephen and Thomas follow the cart in the rear, Thomas watching the path ahead.

Please make note of your specific positioning. I will roll initiative for the group once we have specific position set. I have described the dwarves' locations, though I have not included them on the map. I will do so if it becomes important. The semi-transparent rectangle represents the magic dead zone created by the obsidian tiles. Similar white squares will be used to note active sand glass.

Pleased that everyone has agreed to her hastily formed plan and fervently hoping that she hasn't made some tactical error. Jenya takes her place in the middle of the procession and loads her pistol with a dose of black powder and a bullet in preparation.

First comes the powder
Then load the shot
Tamp it all down
And that's all you've got

The words of the training rhyme she cannot remember ever not knowing echoes in her mind as her fingers do the work quickly.

The tunnel is 8 blocks wide? Jenya is at F4

Female Human Obsidian Walker (Ranger) 5

Stopping a moment to check and load her weapon, a well worn musket, Tamayra brings up the rear, eyes open to possible danger.

Level 0: Detect Magic, Read Magic, Mending
Level 1: Bless, Shield of Faith, Pendulum

Doing as he was instructed, Iron Sprocket brings up the rear of the group, occasionally looking behind him in case something were to come up behind them. At some point down the path, he takes his shield off his back and straps it to his left arm. He then clutches with his right hand what appears to be a memory crystal on a chain around his neck and mutters something under his breath.

Iron Sprocket carries a memory crystal imbued with his most fond memory of Rheynold and channels through it. B3

Yes, the tunnel is 8 squares, or 40 feet wide.

The squad begins to descend down the gradual slope of the corridor. Guiding the cart, the dwarf near the front carefully manages the cart so that the goats move at an even pace. Ahead a flickering light can be seen. Slowing the pace of the cart, Tairn barks an order.

"Look alive folks. We've got repairs to make."

After the cart slows to a stop just behind and to right of the flickering sand glass light, the dwarves spring into action. Quickly a ladder is unloaded along with several beams. In a matter of moments, the beams are connected to create a frame. On top of the frame several planks are placed. Two of the dwarves climb atop the planks using the ladder. They describe the condition to Tairn, while the other dwarves unload tools.

Perception rolls:

  • Rheynold: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3

Tamayra:

Ergas tries to stay a few paces ahead of the group, in J5.

Female Human Obsidian Walker (Ranger) 5

Tamayra stops cold, eyes focused on a spot in the distance. "Torch light moving in the distance," she says just loud enough for her companions to hear. "Coming this way."

The ranger slips her musket off of her shoulder raising it into a semi ready position as she makes sure the weapon is primed.

Female Human Obsidian Gunner Lev 5 | HP 51/51HP | AC 18 (FF 13 Touch 15) | Init+6 | Saves (Fort+5,Reflex+8,Will+4) | Grit 3/3 | Per +11

Startled that Tamayra has seen something ahead that she didn't Jenya similarly readies her pistol and moves to F3 peering ahead.

"Friend? Or are there only Foes here?" She asks.

Male Half-Orc Monk 9 / Puppetmaster 2

Tairn speaks up after over hearing the exchange, "Since the elementals began to emerge miners only carry lanterns."

Now knowing that the possible threat is in front of them, not behind, Iron Sprocket moves quickly into a position beside Jenya to help cover the less protected members of the repair squad.

F4

Male Half-Orc Monk 9 / Puppetmaster 2

As the group stands ready the flame in the distance slowly comes close enough for everyone to see it clearly. What at first seemed to be torch light is a rocky monster, glowing from within. The creature seems to be emitting an internal heat, torch like light spills from its eyes and mouth, as well as fractures that cover its outer surface.

Tairn yells, "Magma elemental. Speed the repairs." Looking toward the group he continues, "Hold a line in front of us. Signal if you need to retreat." With a nod the dwarves speed their work. Thomas and Stephen move from behind the cart, flanking it near the center of the corridor (G3 & G4).

In front of the cart: Corridor Map

Roll initiative. After this I'll record everyone's initiative and roll them together in the future. Wanted to get this info. up quickly. For reference, the scaffolding is in E & F, 3 & 4 (10 foot square) and the sand glass being repaired is in E & F, 4 & 5 (10 foot square).

Range to magma elemental:

Jenya rushes in front of the scaffolding intending to act as a line of defense for the repairmen.

"When it gets within 20 feet of me it's getting shot" she shouts letting her fellow guardians know what her plan is.

Position L4

Female Human Obsidian Walker (Ranger) 5

As she raises her musket into firing position, Tamayra feels the familiar sense of calm confidence that always came in these moments. The silence before the thunder. Her body shifting into her preferred shooting stance, she sights her advancing target.

"I've got it at 40." she calls out, her breathing slow and steady, ready to release her shot between breaths.

And then quickly reloads her gun with a paper cartridge. The pre-prepared mixture in treated paper drops quickly down the muzzle and reaides the weapon to fire again.

Given the increased range of the musket, Tamayra would have attacked while it was 40 ft away then spent the next round reloading while it got within Jenya's preferred range. (So round 0 Tamayra fires, Round 1 Jenya fires and Tamayra reloads.)

If all the baddies are coming in from one direction I think it makes sense for Jenya to be in front of Tamarya and fire together. In a situation where they are coming from multiple directions I think what you say is better with Jenya and Tamara standing closer and Tamayra firing first.

Female Human Obsidian Walker (Ranger) 5

Yeah that occurred to me about two hours later. Ignore what I said before

Male Half-Orc Monk 9 / Puppetmaster 2

So both firing during the same round.

As the elemental is hit again, bits of rock begin to fall from its body. Flashes of lava spread across its surface as it struggles to maintain it's form. Solidifying a bit more, but clearly impacted by the shots - the elemental moves into the bedrock below while continuing forward. (Halfway into the bedrock @ 05, completely into the bedrock @ N5)

Burrowed enemies can't attack from below can they? Any ideas on how to attack something underground?
