Walking in the door with a muttered "Hi" Shilyn finally shows up in a dark blue terrycloth robe and her bunny slippers. Her long, dark hair is disheveled, looking like she'd just woken up after a very long night and little sleep (which isn't far from the mark).

Heading towards the donut table she reaches out to grab a jelly roll and a steaming cup of black coffee. Walking over to her chair, she plops down and takes a bite, keeping an eye out for the newcomers.

A skinny, shirtless, and dark-skinned man sits cross-legged over in the corner with headphones on. His eyes are closed and he seems to be rocking out to his music, rocking his body back and forth and inattentive to his surroundings.

Varian walks in, weaponless as usual, his chain shirt gleaming in the lamplight. "Oh hi again, Shi. Hullo Ma..." he stops as he realizes the sorceror can't hear him.

He helps himself to a cup of kaf and a doughnut, then finds himself a seat to enjoy them. "Nice slippers, Shi" he says with a little laugh.

Stuffing the last of her donut into her mouth and washing it down with a sip of coffee, Shi runs her fingers through her tossled hair before shooting a glare at Varian, muttering something unintelligible about 'morning people'.

Pulling a sheaf of papers from the pocket of her robe, she waves it at him and gumbles, "Have you read this script? I should have a talk with my agent! I mean really?? Next I'll be asked to do shampoo commercials! AArrgh!"

Standing, she grabs her cup and wanders over to grab a plate. Piling on a vast amount of scrambled eggs, sausage, fried potatoes and a couple of pancakes, she stuffs a banana into a pocket then refills her cup. "Let me go get cleaned up. Don't want to scare the noobs when they show," she says as she heads back to her trailer.

Casting a quick glance back at Varian as she shoulders open the door, careful not to spill any of her breakfast, she adds with a grin, "And don't you make fun of my bunny slippers!"

Deaglan almost bumps into Shilyn as she was glancing back at Varian.

"Whoah! What's with you Shilyn? You always are so attentive and now you didn't see me?"

Deaglan takes a deep breath and starts again "Never mind, happy to be back. And don't anyone start on Gorum and his merits, Father Eldrast did enough of that. Trudd be praised that we have another assignment on our hands now."

Entering the room you notice that he has replaced his longhammer with an adamantine one, for the rest he is still the same old dwarf.

"Well met Varian! How have you been? he then moves to the darkskinned man "Hello, I am Deaglan, son of Donagh, servant of Trudd. I assume you are also a Pathfinder?"

Adril Hestram struts into the tavern, a bald aasimar with dark skin following him. With a hearty smile from his bearded face, the Venture-Captain sits down, ordering two drinks for himself. "Long time no see for a few of ya.", looking at the party with earnest.

DC 5 Int:

Venture-Captain Adril Hestram is the man who called upon your services to save Nigel in the Blakros Museum from the Mwangi-influenced incident as well as the man who originally ordered you to head to Thornkeep many months ago.

"I figger you guys need a break from the dungeon crawlin' so I lined up a new job for you lot; head to the town of Carrion Hill in Ustalav and check up on Garus Corrinth. He's a former Pathfinder who retired and ended up as a soldier of the town guard there. We asked him to stake out some locales and see if we could get a new Lodge in Carrion Hill, but he's been a bit quiet the past month.", the Venture-Captain pausing only to finish one of his cups in a single drink, wiping the froth of mead from his mustache. "Anyway, since we had to call out Amnur, Orion, and Mylvwara to another assignment, I had to grab some other agents to join you for your protection. I think you worked with Mahasi before.", nodding towards the Tien man already at the table. "And this here is Owai, another guy from that area. He fights sorta funny, but I can't complain about the results.", tossing a few sheets of paper detailing some of aasimar's missions.

"Anyway, head north to Ustalav, make sure Garus is ok, and see if he found a Lodge location. If need be, you are authorized to make the selection if there are multiple locales, but make sure we got the OK from the mayor on this; the Decemvirate wants to be on the up and up here and still ride the coattails of our good deeds in the Worldwound. Garus should be able to put in a good word for ya."

Adril grabs his second mug and is about to gulp it down before he asks, "Any questions?"

Mahasi scowls at the beer; although the Vudrani atanapratta caste are not forbidden from drink, he still finds fermented wheat distasteful.

"Carrion; this word means dead flesh, yes? The Avistani give things such strange names. How did this place get this awful name..."

The Aasimar following Venture-Captain Hestram is dressed in silks of white and yellow positively dripping with ornaments, including a finely crafted sword-and-sun symbol of Sarenrae hanging about his neck on a gold chain. His skin is dark but with a hint of flecks of gold. At his waist is a finely adorned scabbard containing a Scimitar.

"Good to meet you all." he says and bows, his voice strong but with a whisper of melody to it.

Having gathered information about Carrion Hill beforehand, if I may.

@Mahasi & Owai: The area that Carrion Hill resides was first colonized by ancient Varisians leaving the destruction of the fall of Thassilon. Since then, it's had numerous owners, but since Tar-Baphon's defeat centuries ago, it has been steady in the hands of Ustalav in the county of Versex.

The name comes from the hordes of ghouls that previously owned control of the defensible hill and its surrounding lands. From the times of the Whispering Tyrant, so many battles occurred around here that the stench of carrion remained for many years. While the scent has long since past, the name has remained since.

After an unfortunate childhood, I was fortunate to be rescued from slavery and placed under the protection of a temple of Sarenrae where I took up the art of the Dervish. Sorry for the delay, guess there was no more input for what is in Carrion Hill. Continuing on!

The trip to Ustalav is surprisingly uneventful. What necromantic threats are on the party's mind, only the occasional wolf howl at night causes any sort of disturbance on the journey.

Once in the gothic countryside, the scent and sounds of swamp become more prevalent; a dank moistness surrounds much of the road. When it isn't bog marshes, dark forests that appear to be festering with strange noises to either side. After nearly two weeks of travel, the party finally reaches their goal. The hump of earth jutting out from the swamps known as Carrion Hill is in your sights.

As the party makes their way to the city entrance, tightly tucked two story buildings make a distinct pathway into the city's heart. A dark alleyway that eventually opens to another street can be seen sporadically, and the stone walkways seem to be made of a strange material has endured foot traffic and nature quite well.

Surprisingly, the streets are fairly empty despite arriving in the late morning. However, the sound of a chiming bell and the holler of a young crowd barker get your attention.

"Hear ye! Hear ye! Carrion Hill needs heroes! Men of stout heart and bravery are asked to come to Crown Manor with all haste, there to receive a worthy of their skill and talents! Will be rewarded of suitable magnificence! Make haste to Crown Manor! Make haste!"

"Yes, yes. It is clear that the lower classes of this city cannot take care of themselves. No reason not to make haste to the leaders domicile. The sooner we get this done with, the sooner I may attend to my daily meditations." the sorcerer complains, stretching muscles sore from several days on the trail.

If he can find anyone, he will ask around a bit for directions to the manor. He does keep an ear open for other bits of gossip, however.

The trip was trying, but Owai's good humour remains, tested only by the last part of the journey through the swamps, which seem to dim his enthusiasm somewhat. It is during this last segment that he reveals two facts about him; the first is his otherworldly singing voice which he uses to brighten the mood with song. The second fact is that he is able to create a halo of light around his head at will which has the effect of literally brightening the day, but also gives a slightly reassuring feeling to those watching it - if their intentions be good. His ostentatious dress is given over for more practical attire on the trip. His symbol of Sarenrae and his ornately decorated Scimitar are the exceptions, however.

Arriving in Carrion Hill, he is alert, looking around him as though expecting Ghouls to erupt from every alley. The general gloom of the place doesn't disappoint him. The cryer's announcement makes him straighten. "What better way to ingratiate ourselves to the locals than by assisting the town with a problem to which the Society may be perfectly suited?" he says with a smile.

@Mahasi: The crier is more than happy to answer your call for information as the party approaches. "Huh, a strange lot to come in here! But the Commadant needed people, so head north along Manor Street and it's the place before it bends right. Can't miss it."

While heading there, you get the sense that things are off; what few people you see have a look of panic in their eyes and fail to even make note of the exotic newcomers unless you prompt them for interaction. Seems nature itself does not wish to be in town as murders of crows circle overhead, but resist landing for any longer than needed to rest their ebony wings and take to the sky once more.

A gentle rain begins as the party nears Crown Manor. Majority of shops along the street are closed, even ones that should be open at this time of day such as the blacksmith and general store.

Two men, cloaked in armor of blackened leather and chain stand guard over the entrance to Crown Manor. One reaches for his longsword and the other places a hand on his longbow until they make out that you are not normal people.

DC 10 Sense Motive:

Their somber faces actually brighten, despite the raining becoming more steady, looking to you all as a new glimmer of hope.

The guards, Crows as they are locally called (determined by Mahasi's information gathering on the way to the manor) lead you to an open great hall. A servant gets a warm fire going as several more Crows stand by a distracted and worried man in a tall-backed chair. Turning to see you, he smiles as the guards behind you nod. The man straightens up, speaking. "At least we've got a few backbones still upright in this place." He then gestures to for you all to sit around the grand table before clearing his throat and introducing himself.

"I am mayor Vanton Heggry; thank you for attending in our hour of need." He pauses for everyone to introduce themselves, nodding as he quickly figures out that you are not local, but continues smiling nonetheless. "Carrion Hill has a long history of battle, yet always before its enemies have attacked from outside our walls. We are fortified to defend against such attacks, but now we face an entirely different threat. Our enemy is already here, dwelling in the tunnels and catacombs below and surfacing to strike without warning." He looks around as if checking to make sure he did not doom the entire room with his statement before continuing.

"I am not sure if you have heard, but the first of these attacks occurred early this very morning, when something huge came up from below in a part of the Tangles called Slipper Market. It partially destroyed a building and killed a half dozen locals before retreating into the ruined structure. The Crows were swift to reply, led by our own Commadant Garus, but when they arrived, they were slaughtered to the last." Mayor Heggry looks down, crestfallen about the loss of men.

"Since then, the thing has moved on, surfacing no less than three times in different parts of the city, crushing buildings from below and slaying anyone it finds inside. I’ve got the entire force of the city watch in reserve, and with each new event they respond quickly, but the damage is always done by the time they arrive. Already there is talk of war and invasion, but I still believe that what we face is a single horror. If we can only figure out what it is, we might be able to defeat it. And this is where your group comes in—the horror has moved on from its initial point of entrance, but if you can explore the ruins in Slipper Market, perhaps you can find some sort of clue to tell us what it is we face. I cannot spare any of my Crows to aid you, for they are needed in keeping order in the streets, but if indeed you can find something… anything…", the mayor almost breaking down in futility at the situation weighing down upon up. He takes a deep breath and looks each and every one of you in the eye. "...find something about this monster from below, I will pay you handsomely: 1,500 gold ducats for solid information, and twice again that amount for aiding in defeating the horror."

With that, he stands up, awaiting your answer and any questions you may have.

@Deaglan: The mayor smiles again as you say that. "Thank you, I appreciate that. And yes, I'll have a pair of Crows take you to the market."

Any other questions for the mayor before you head out?

Ugh, it ate my reply from last night. Oh well, do over :)

Pushing the hood of her cloak back from her head, Shilyn listens as the others discuss the recent events in town. Looking at the mayor she asks, "Ok, rampaging monster or monsters we understand, but where are all the townfolk? This place looked deserted when we entered."

On the way to the Slipper Market, he says to the others, "We need to talk about what the Mayor said about the monster - that it was invisible or concealed in some way. We should prepare ourselves if this is the case."

The pair of guards that greeted you escort you to Slipper Market, southwest of the Crown Manor. The rain has not let up since your time in the residence and the only sounds you hear are the wet clacks of boots on the cobblestone roads and the occasional cawing from the murders above.

"Too quiet right now.", one of the guards speaks. "The people are scared... only a matter of time 'til things get chaotic."

"Yeah, not looking forward to that.", replies the other before he looks at you. "Hopefully you can end this madness before the whole town gets killed by... whatever that is."

Unless prompted, they don't say anything else for the rest of the rain-soaked walk.

You arrive at Slipper Market, which is currently in disorder. What appears to be a number of what would be bustling shops is abandoned save for a couple of dozen Crows guarding the intersection with rope barricades. One of your escorts lifts up the dripping hemp rope and lifts it for everyone to enter.

A barely functioning tent is visible with a trio of mangled bodies. All of them have been horribly crushed, the skulls now splinters within. Two of the bodies appear to be that of homeless vagabonds, one with his chest flattened to a mere couple of inches in thickness while the other has an obvious sign of his spine being snapped into a 90 degree angle. The third is that of a Crow whose waist was twisted several times around his body and arms dangle like a jellyfish tentacle. What's more worrisome is that his breastplate and longsword bear the same twists... twice, maybe three times around.

One of the Crows at the market moves up. "Greetings, I am Sub-commandant Olris, I assume you're here to investigate this manner."

After your acknowledgments, he nods promptly, then continues. "To the right there," pointing to the partially collapsed building to the west. "is the attack site. Take care going in; we're fairly sure it shouldn't go down, but we aren't sure how badly this thing mangled the foundation on its way up." Pointing to the left, he adds, "Over there is an empty shop, but it's owned by Tarrig Moorcroft. He's doing the most talking out of any of the witnesses so he may be the best person to speak to if you can trust what he says."

What do you do?
