Close to the epicenter, but partially protected by the corner, Sol recovers a little faster than some, not as fast as others. When the demon witch appears he scrambles for the dagger he dropped. HE scoops it up as he squares up to face the new threat.

We are going to go a little bit free-form with this fight - no map. Assume you can hit whichever demon you like (and they can hit you as they wish). You will have a few, shall we say, 'home advantages' in this fight.

The demons giggle as they anticipate violence. One conjures darkness to blind the adventurers, but in response the heroes find themselves glowing with a holy light that simply rolls the gloom away like sun on mist. The demons hiss with fury and attack with their claws. But as well as holy light, the saviours of Kenabres have a newfound resilience which the demons struggle to penetrate.

OK, there are six demons (try Knowledge (The Planes) if you are curious what type they are). D1 tried to cast Darkness but was frustrated by your newfound glow. D2 and D3 will attack Kira (getting flanking), D4 and D5 will attack Mulluq (also getting flanking) and D6 will attack Rhok.

HOWEVER, for this fight (only) you are suffused with power from the shattered wardstone fragment and it manifests in a number of helpful ways: you get DR 10/good; regeneration 5 (unholy damage or evil spells); resist acid 10 and resist fire 10; your attacks count as Good and you do an additional +2d6 damage against creatures of the evil subtype (which, though it doesn't say it, stacks with the bane weapon effect); and once per round as an immediate action you can add 1d12 to the result of any 1d20 die roll you just made. I will rely on you to track these effects.

D2 1d20 + 12 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 12 + 2 = 27 to hit, damage 1d6 + 5 + 2d6 ⇒ (1) + 5 + (1, 1) = 8

Mulluq's first thought is to ignore the ones on him and instead bring his anger against one of them that hit Kira. The idea to focus fire and bring at least one of them down first. That is until he sees the hit delivered by Booam on one of his own threats. Though he himself was hit, the wound seems to close before it even has time to become an issue. In all this, he instead calls upon the aid of his goddess to bolster the powers of his allies.

He took 5, which regenerated.

"Maybe the witch has some letters or orders. These demons and cultists have been a surprisingly literary bunch."

Secure with the observation that Kira is healing through at least two kinds of magic, Sol settles himself to search the room.

Aubrey,it's going to be a few days before I can update Sol.

No worries, you aren't going to be plunged into combat for a little while.

The adventurers find no more hidden letters or information in the room, and no more demons try to molest them as they leave the Grey Garrison. Outside, the city seems to have changed in some subtle ways. The sky is still cold and grey and the sun a weak glow, but it is a normal northern sky rather than evidence of an expanding Worldwound. The strange cries that echoed around the ruined city have been silenced and as they walk back to Defender's Heart they come across the carcass of a howler lying in the street. The body shows no evidence of violence, the creature simply appears to have died in its tracks.

As they return to the crusaders' makeshift headquarters, the heroes are mobbed by a jubilant crowd of refugees and knights. From the confused hubbub of voices, it seems that the demons in the city were suddenly engulfed in white fire. Those which could teleport away did so, and those which could not died. It seems that the siege is now lifted and the city free of demonic presence, at least for now.

Irabeth shoulders her way through the crowd and claps the returning adventurers on the shoulder. "I knew you had succeeded in destroying the wardstone when the demons fled," she says, grinning. "You have saved the city, and maybe much more."

Kira looks up at the news of the demons, "We succeeded. You're course of action was successful, despite our doubts. We should discuss what happened immediately after, but could you find us food and rest first?"

Jod makes sure the howler is truly dead before passing by.

He shakes his head at the amazing turn of events, but says nothing.

Before leaving, Sol makes sure they pack up all the demon affecting weapons they captured and found in the hidden armory.

We may not be able to use all the arrows or some of the weaker items, but they ought to be put to use in the city's defense.

At the Defender's Heart Sol nods following Kira's request.

"Some of that stew, would be good."

It takes a while, especially as a major party is getting into full swing by the time they manage to extricate themselves - there are some paladins doing things that under other circumstances might be considered inappropriate - but the adventurers find time to get some food and rest. Despite the noise of the celebrations, sleep comes quickly.

As they dream...

Together, the adventurers find themselves in a large hall, brightly lit from high windows which allows golden light to spill into the scene below. Towering angels armed with longswords and shields and dressed in armour that shines brilliantly stand guard at the corners. Several others consult over a table covered with maps and reports with a diminutive dark-haired woman dressed in plate mail.

She looks up and notices the heroes. Her hair is cropped sensibly short and her face is scarred from numerous battle wounds. Yet she is beautiful in a truly unearthly way - not simply sexually attractive, but an embodiment of holiness, goodness and rightness which simply emanates from her presence. She steps towards them, her violet eyes resting one each one momentarily like an officer inspecting her troops.

"Very good," she says, nodding approvingly. "You have done more than could be asked of you. Yet there is much more to be done. I apologise that there is little I can do to aid you, for ancient laws and edicts prevent me for interfering in the mortal realm, even when the Abyss threatens its annihilation. But please accept this token of my gratitude."

She firmly shakes the hand of each of the gathered group, looking deeply into their eyes for a brief second. Although it is hard to discern, something significant has occurred.

"Good luck, go with my blessing," she says. A knocking sound seems to come from somewhere outside, growing louder as the dream begins to fade. "And don't let those bastard demons win!"

The knocking gets louder and the adventurers open their eyes as an excited knight bursts into their room. "We've just had word! The queen is coming with her army! She'll be here by the end of the day!"

Mulluq takes no part in any celebrations, spending the night in both maintaining his weapons and armor, as well as time in silent prayer. With the excitement of the morning, he simply rises calmly, before turning straight into a kneeling position.

He begins softly weeping as he prays, "Forgive me, oh great Inheritor, my Goddess, Light of the Sword, for standing before your grace with my most unholy of visages. You deem me worthy of witnessing your glory, yet I stood before you cloaked in the rags of demonhood. I will rend the life from every demon that crosses my path that I may make up for the failures of my existence in your most magnificent of presences. Please grant me the power to lay low before you my atrocious kin, and I vow to one day be worthy of your glance."

Just wow, Mulluq.

Jod jumps to his feet as he catches the fellow's excitement, "That's great!" As the man turns to take the news to others, Jod looks at his gear and suddenly feels very self-conscious.

I've never met someone like a queen. I'm a hunter, my gear is well-used, I'm not a noble with someone to polish my armor. I guess I'd better get started.

He steps to the door to hail the departing knight, "Hey, before you go..."

He will ask the man where he can get the supplies necessary to clean up his gear as much as possible. At least getting the demonblood stains out as much as possible.

Prestidigitation, anyone?

Party! This could very possibly be the best moment in Sol's life. People are happy, beer flowing, and although his friends did all the heavy lifting, the teenager is more than willing to cash in on their celebrity status. Through the night he repeats incresingly lubricated versions of their exploits. The earliest versions illustrated with illusions of their foes.

He never quite makes it to the bedroom. The next morning it's not the excited knight that wakes him. It's the sunlight, and the gentle shoe of a barmaid who wants to swab the floor.

He stumbles back to the bedroom in time to catch the party in their preparations. Rubbing his neck he says, "I had the greatest dream about us all last night."

The dream made such an impression, he forgets to boor them with tales of ridiculous drinking.

Jod pauses, "Wait, what? It wasn't?" Staring into space, he is obviously replaying the scene back in his mind as his mouth falls open considering the reality as it begins to sink in.

With a somewhat regretful look, he considers the gear he's trying to clean to meet a queen - and he's just been face-to-face with a goddess wearing this? He redoubles his efforts in an attempt to put the thought out of his mind.

"What wasn't a dream? All of us meeting angels and shaking the hand of Iomedae herself? That's not the kind of thing that happens in my real life."

So if Mulluq stayed up all night in vigil (in that pretty awesome post), was he in the dream? And if so did her worship tell him to put a sock in it?

"It was a dream in the sense that your body was asleep. The very fact that it was a shared experience should tell you that it was also a very real experience. The Goddess herself has blessed our quest, that is not a fact to take lightly.

It may come to that.

Mulluq didn't stay up all night. Looking back I see how it could be read that way. He didn't celebrate that night, doing his thing instead, went to bed ... then in the morning...

Finished with his prayer, he stands and regains his composure, "Indeed, the presence of The Inheritor was an omen of the most divine proportions, that she blesses the path we walk in wresting back Kenabres, and maybe even the Worldwound itself, from the taloned grasp of the demonspawn." He stands as stoic and serious as ever, a flash of purpose burns behind his eyes, as he appears ready to charge off into the Worldwound alone if need be.

The army from Nerosyan arrives later just before noon when the outriders enter the city. The rest of the troops – mostly mounted knights with a few squadrons of scouts and archers – and the baggage train appear shortly after, marching up the road from the south. However, this is no glorious parade but the reoccupation of a broken city ravaged and discarded by the enemy. The soldiers are tired, their gear, armour and weapons showing signs of heavy use. Some are assigned to man what is left of Kenabres’ defences but the majority set up camp by the south gate, the city having few of the resources necessary to bivouac an army.

The queen’s retinue reaches Defender’s Heart, the de facto seat of what’s left of the government of Kenabres, that evening. A large group of alert and tough-looking knights rides into the inn with little fanfare, their faces grim and manner brusquely business-like. They recce the area before a second squad arrives with Queen Galfrey. Other than a golden circlet about her helm, there is little to distinguish her from the other new arrivals. Her armour is clean and polished but dinted in several places and she bears a longsword at her hip in a worn scabbard. The sword of Iomedae is emblazoned on the shield slung over her back and the coat of arms of the royal house of Mendev on her tabard. She dismounts and with a few of her advisors walks over to greet Irabeth and some of the other Eagle Knights where they have gathered, somewhat nervously, to greet her.

“Commander Tirablade,” says the queen formally in a deep and well-modulated voice, “You have performed a magnificent service to the Crown and people of Mendev. You have held the line and thrown back the invaders. We are most grateful.”

“It was an effort by all of the people of Kenebres, Your Majesty,” replies Irabeth. “I am simply fortunate to have been in the position to lead them.”

“Without strong leadership, even the strongest team may fail,” says Queen Galfrey, “Buy you are right, this victory is not owned by any single person but by the citizens of Kenabres. We give thanks to Iomedae that you were able to find such strength in adversity. But the city need stand alone no longer. We have brought a relief force to bolster your defences and resupply your provisions. Come, we have much to discuss.”

Irabeth bows her head and follows the queen inside.

Rumours about Queen Galfrey, Diplomacy checks please (roll individually, since you haven’t been actively working together on this, this is just stuff you have picked up):

If you get 10 or more:

Spoiler:
Queen Galfrey is the ruler of Mendev and resides in the capital Nerosyan. She is a paladin of Iomedae and also the leader of the crusade against the demons of the Worldwound. She is human but believed to be over 150 years old, despite looking to be in her early forties. Her longevity is said to be a blessing from Iomedae.

If you get 20 or more:

Spoiler:
Some say that the queen’s longevity is down more to doses of Sun Orchid Elixir, purchased to ensure that the commander of the crusade can remain in position. There are darker rumours that she is in fact in league with the demons, playing out the conflict for mysterious reasons, although these are considered mostly black propaganda by the enemy rather than reflecting the truth.

The queen is cossetted with Irabeth for several hours before a knight in the royal livery comes to find the adventurers. “You have been granted an audience with the queen. She wishes to thank you for your efforts in defeating the demons. Please come with me.”

They find the queen in the room commandeered by Irabeth as her headquarters, peering at tactical maps on a table with Irabeth. She has removed her helm, which lies discarded with her gauntlets on a chair, to reveal messy blonde hair and a face with delicate-looking pale skin and light blue eyes. She nods towards the group. “I have heard of your exploits, and was keen to meet and thank you in person.”

diplo: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (2) + 0 = 2 Kira doesn't do idle gossip....

On being introduced to the queen Kira will make a formal curtsy. "Your Majesty, it has been our honour and our duty to achieve what we have. Through good fortune and help we have been able to secure the little victories we so far have.
We have good reason to believe that there is more to this plot to come though ma'am. There is evidence that those responsible are still out there, and that although we have hindered their plan, the battle is far from over."
